Is Your Business Card Important?Could having it seen by up to 10,000 people lead to new business?
Hi… and thanks for picking up a copy of the Beaverton Business Directory & Shopping Guide. As Beaverton’s first and only community newspaper, I invite you to look through the guide, take it home and use it as a resource to patron our lo-cal small businesses. Inside you’ll find useful shopping maps (to help you explore and discover), short and concise business listings (to help you quickly learn about your neighborhood’s goods and services), traditional advertisements and stories about local non-profits (the heart and soul of our city). In short, this newspaper is designed for Beaverton residents by Beaverton residents to help local businesses gain new customers and thrive. We, at Cedar House Media, are doing our part by publishing this directory and we encourage you to do yours by visiting a new local business… even if it’s just to say “Hi!”
Sincerely yours,
Cory Burden Owner of Cedar House Media (and long time Beaverton resident)

New Friends of the Library Book CornerBthe best prices in town for the latest books by popular authors and much more at The Book Corner, operated by the New Friends of the Beaverton Library.
The Book Corner is found in a little house on the corner of SW 5th and Wash-ington across from the library fountain. Prices range from 50 cents to $5 for a large variety of books, both hardback and paperback.
Favorite authors including Elizabeth George, James Patterson, Danielle Steele, Patricia Cornwell, Jodi Picoult, Kathy Re-ichs, and JA Jance are just a few found on
The Book Corner has even more: -
cal, religious, health and diet, gardening, texts, medical and vintage books dating from 1800. Music and books on CD, VHS tapes, DVD movies, and books on tape are also priced from 50 cents to $5.
The children’s corner is hard to miss. It is a fun place for young readers, moms,

on Sunday. The store is closed Monday and on holidays. The corner shop is hard to miss with a sign of three big books against a big tree on the corner.
The Book Corner is managed by Sam Sofaer and a staff of 35 loyal volunteers who work 3-4 hours a day once a week or month.
“Books we sell come from donations
from the public, which are tax deductible,” Ms. Sofaer says. “ Your donations are al-ways welcome and needed,” she adds. Do-nations may be taken to the Book Corner any day or time it is open. Sets of Ency-clopedias are not accepted.

by the library budget. “Wish lists” from the library staff are given to the New Friends of the Beaverton Library twice a year. The
-mines which “wishes” it is able to grant.
From Oct. 2009 to Oct. 2010, nearly $33,000 has been used to buy two new com-puters for the new Scholls Ferry Branch, var-ious types of carts for both the main library and the branch, children’s board books, CD drawers and adult foreign language books.
The Book Corner has been in busi-ness and helping the library for 18 years. Started by long-time Beaverton resident Nancy Stewart, it moved around a bit until the little house on Washington St. became available and was purchased with the help of donated money.
The New Friends of the Beaverton Li-brary’s goals are to help promote aware-ness of the resources and services of the library and to strengthen relationships be-tween the library, schools, local business and community organizations. It has 120 members and the board meets the second Tuesday of the month at 6:15pm to 8pm.
New members are most welcome to join. Membership information and appli-cations are available at both the main and branch libraries and at the Book Corner.

Spring is here and there’s a lot to do. Apex just made it easier for you.
A local company is bridging the gap towards economic recovery. Apex Auto & Marine Spa in downtown Beaverton has created a new business concept by teaming up with a local hair salon owner in a combined effort to marriage their popular services in one convenient location.
“The concept was a brainstormed idea in the beginning” says John Far-ris, one of the owners of Apex Auto Spa. “Bringing a Hair salon into our automotive detail shop seemed a bit odd, but I quickly realized that our cli-ents thought the best of it! Servicing our client’s cars while they are in the salon has really increased our business and exposure.”
Elizabeth Darling has been a stylist
for 10 years and is the owner of the Apex Hair and Spa. She describes her client’s excitement of the move. “My clients have raved about the time savings this partnership has provided for them. Just getting into a clean car after getting pampered in the salon makes for an even better experience.”
Apex Auto Spa has been in busi-ness for over 8 years locally in Beaver-ton, and Apex Hair and Spa launched in the same building in February 2011.
Word has spread quickly about the new venture. “So far so good! We have repeat and referral business that has come from this move so I’m thrilled.” Says Farris.
Make sure you check out the websites of the two shops or maybe even drive by to check them out. This sounds like a very innovative way to buck the negative persona that has been our economy lately. I think it’s a good concept and applaud them for trying something different to peek new interest and customers!

Wellness Weekends at the Market
This year’s market will also debut our new Solar Canopy, courtesy of the City of Beaverton. This solar powered tent, which we are naming The Hot
organizations each Saturday to promote their mission, events, and raise aware-ness within the community.
The 2011 Beaverton Farmer’s Mar-ket mission is to encourage a healthy and sustainable community. This sea-son will showcase an exciting series of “Wellness Weekends” that go above and beyond selecting nutritious, whole foods at the market. Wellness Week-ends will include:
“Animal Awareness” May 21Representatives from local animal
assistance groups, demos on making pet food at home, and veterinarian vis-its at the market.
“Senior Health Awareness” June 18Informational booths and assistance
from local senior-aid organizations, as
easy meals.
“General Health Awareness” July 16 Health care screenings, such as
blood pressure and cholesterol tests, skin care tips, medical information, and healthy recipe demos.
“Healthy Kids” September 10 & 17Demos on how to make healthy
baby food and how to pack nutritious lunches kids will truly enjoy, and mar-
fresh foods they love and become ac-tively involved in their food choices.
On August 20th join the “Buy a Bunch” for the Food Bank Food Drive at the market! Reduced
produce prices from generous farmers will encourage shoppers to purchase farm fresh items for the Food Bank bar-rels and immediately donate at the mar-ket.
The 2011 season will also passion-ately pursue outreach to low-income and minority populations in Washington County, as well as to immigrant, refugee and migrant communities via the food stamp programs such as SNAP/EBT. The market participates in three pro-grams that make fresh, local food avail-able to everyone in the community:
is for both WIC (Women, Infant and Children) and Seniors—this program helps nutritionally at-risk groups ob-tain farm-fresh produce. The FDNP brought $1 million to Oregon farmers and families last year, and is for fresh fruits and veggies purchased at farm-ers markets only.

Program is for woman, infants and chil-dren. It will mean $8 million to Oregon families, which they can spend either at their local farmers market or the gro-cery store to purchase fresh fruits and veggies only.

The number of Oregon Trail tokens sold at the Beaverton Farmers Market last year increased 300%. More program recipi-ents have discovered that they can use

These programs are a win-win for everyone. Consumers using tokens or
food, and farmers and artisan producers can sell to customers who would not oth-erwise be able to shop at the market.

1868, Beaverton became a town registered with the county. With the hopes of bring-ing a railroad to an area once described as “mostly swamps and marshes connected by beaver dams to create what looked like a huge lake,” Joshua Welch (with the help of George Betts, Charles Angel, William Watson, John Henry and other prominent residents of the area) platted out a township
You may recognize some of these names as streets we drive down as we pass through the historic downtown dis-trict but they are more than that. These are the names of the families who settled this area as far back as 1847 and there are more: Denny, Hocken, Walker, Hall, Big-gi, Cady, Allen, Davies, Scholls, Fanno, Vose, Spencer, Tucker and many, many more. These are the people who drained
the swamps and plowed the land. They brought in the railroad as well as an airport and even launched a silent movie studio in the 1920s. Yes, our city’s history is long and full of rich stories that we who live here now can be very, very proud.
The Beaverton Historical Society was founded to remember these people and the stories their lives told. They are here to educate the present about the past while celebrating in the many achievements that have made our city as wonderful a place to live as it is today. And to make our city’s history as accessible as possible to the community, they we opened the Beaver-ton History Center on Broadway St in July of 2010. Please go by to see their photo collections, library, displays, and exhibits that celebrate our city’s wonderful past.

Our mission is to, in partnership with the local community, provide free home repairs, rehabilitation and accessibility

made possible by mobilizing and utilizing the skills and talents of between 400-600 volunteers annually. The majority of these volunteers donate their time during our National Rebuilding Day event that takes
place on the last Saturday in April each year. Typically between 20-30 homes are rehabilitated during this event.
Hundreds of volunteers, from many different sectors of the community go forth to help their neighbors in need. Homes are painted, tons of yard debris removed, electrical, plumbing and dry rot repairs are made, wheelchair ramps are built, accessi-ble showers installed, unsafe stairs rebuilt, and much more.
In 2010 we assisted 17 City of Bea-verton homeowners on 20 separate oc-casions. A conservative value of these

year we performed 176 separate repairs
Almost 400 volunteers contributed 4,681 hours of their time to make these repairs possible.
Our organization has assisted over

Rebuilding Together is seeking volun-teers with skills in any home repair or re-habilitation areas, as well as donations of any amount so that we can continue meet-ing the needs of these low-income home-owners, who oftentimes, have no other option but our organization to get the help they so need.
