Welcome back to term 3 and another busy term.

Last week, two of our students travelled to Eastern Creek to represent Western Region in the State Cross Country Carnival. Ronnie Simpson and Jannalee Conroy both qualified to go and ran an excellent race to finish in the middle of the mob. Well done, you have made all of us very proud of your achievements.

Congratulations also to Briane Conroy who played in the Australian Indigenous Netball Team during the holidays on the Gold Coast. Despite rather wet and dismal weather, Briane had a great time and her team lost a close match against New Zealand in the Grand Final by only 2 goals. Again, we are all proud of Briane’s sporting achievements.

Year 12 are now on the countdown to their final exams and the end of their formal school years. We encourage the students sitting the HSC this year to make sure they are revising each night, preparing for the exams in October. We wish you all well as you prepare to leave school.

Our fete was a huge success and the profits made will add to our fund raising efforts. We are on target to purchase air conditioners for the Secondary classrooms by the end of the year. A big thank you goes to all the staff, parents and community members who supported the fete by helping to run stores and competitions, donated items for sales and spent money to help fund raising at the school.

Our Enterprise Agreement weekend is fast approaching at the end of Week 5. The school will be closed on Friday 17th August, 2012 and Monday 20th August, 2012. Please do not send your children to school on these days.

Education week is next week. We will hold Open Classrooms on Wednesday 1st August at 1.00 p.m. Come along and have a look at your child’s classroom, then stay and have a picnic lunch with your children. Sausage sandwiches, drinks and lollies will be available to purchase on the day.

Thanking you in partnership for quality education,

Kerry Bryan

INFANTS/PRIMARY NEWS News spreads quickly in Brewarrina but just in case you haven’t heard both Ronnie Simpson and janalee Conroy did themselves, their family and community proud last Friday when they competed at the state cross country carnival at eastern Creek in Sydney’s Western suburbs. Janalee and Ronnie faced tough competition with about 100 competitors in their races.

Janalee and Ronnie ran hard over the 3000metre course (3kms) and completed the course in just under 13 minutes. They now know the expectations at such a high level and are keen to return next year to improve their times and represent Western region. My thanks goes to their families and friends who supported them and especially to Mr York who drove Ronnie and his family to the event. Belinda Boney made sure Janalee was ready by driving from Queensland to Sydney so she had preparation time before last Friday.

Sadly I and members of the Primary staff are disappointed students from years 3-6 have not taken advantage of the afternoon literacy/numeracy centre we were conducting. At this stage students have not taken advantage of this extra support in learning.

The District Athletics carnival will be held on the 6th August at Brewarrina. If your child will be competing please check in the next few days for a permission note. We are hosting this event for the district at the Geoff New oval and would love as many parents and community members to come and cheer on the students. I am hoping some students will then qualify for the regional carnival at Dubbo.

Part of my role as Deputy Principal is to oversee all attendance at our school. Thank you to the parents who ensure their child/ren come every day. My thanks also to the parents who have actively ensured their child/ren have improved their attendance during the last few weeks of term 2. Please encourage your child to continue to attend school every day. If your child is sick or needs to have leave for family reasons a note explaining will ensure any absences are accounted for. Attendance exemptions can be granted for exceptional situations- for example attending a funeral that requires travel and medical situations out of Brewarrina.

Regards

Cathy Clark Deputy Principal (Primary)

Welcome back to Term 3. I would like to welcome our new PDHPE teacher – Mr Tom McNamara to our school. Tom comes to Brewarrina Central School from the Central Coast of NSW. He will be here for the remainder of 2012. Please make yourself known to him.

This term there are an amazing number of events taking place. Please ask your students regularly for an update about what is happening and keep an eye on the newsletter for events coming up.

This week students have participated in two days of Lawn Bowls experiences learning the finer points of bowls – from all accounts it was great fun.

Year 11 & 12 students began their TVET Indigenous Health program at the TAFE – it will continue each fortnight for the remainder of the year.

A small number of girls in Year 11 will also begin their Hairdressing course at TAFE next week – as you can see we try to offer as many courses for our students as we can to meet their learning needs and interests.

Last term when I was at a conference in Sydney we may be one of the smaller schools in NSW but we are currently able to offer many more options for our students than some of the larger schools – this reflects the efforts of our teachers and staff to support all our kids’ learning needs

It is also timely to remind all students and parents / carers that our kids need to come to school prepared with their equipment every day. The school shop as well as the newsagent and post office keep supplies of stationery needs if students need new books, pens etc. All students should have received their Semester 1 School Report – please contact the school if you wish to discuss any area of your child’s report by making an appointment with the class teacher. Students in Year 11 & 12 will receive their Semester 1 Hospitality VET report separately as they were not included in the original mail out. BCS apologises for this. Please contact me if your child has not received their Hospitality report.

As the term progresses I will keep you updated on secondary happenings – as always please contact the school for an appointment to discuss any matters of concern (Ph: 68392186)

Have a great week and keep warm!!

What’s happening in 5/6W Wicked Kids!

Students in 5/6W have been very busy this term. They have been busy completing projects on the country ‘East Timor’ which will be entered in the Country Women’s Association Poster Competi-tion. We have studied many topics on the country and gained lots of new knowledge! Students will be attending a morning tea at the CWA Hall in week 4 where their posters will be displayed. We have also started a new unit of work in HSIE where we are studying the Olympics. The students are very excited about this topic and cannot wait for the Olympics to start this weekend.

It has been a great start to term 3! Unfortunately I won’t be able to see the great work 5/6W will be doing for the rest of the term as I am going on Maternity Leave in August. I will look forward to visiting the classroom and seeing students and parents around the community. Well done to 5/6W for a great effort!

4/5 Golden Grubs For the first few weeks of Term 3 the students of 4/5 Golden Grubs are learning about “Procedures”. During class students have been writing procedures jointly (whole class) and independently. The class wrote a procedure - How to Make a Milkshake. The students did a fantastic job and were rewarded by Ms Skuthorpe who took them to Angelo’s Cafe to see a demonstration on making milkshakes. This allowed them to visualise the steps they wrote out in class and have something to write for their evaluation.

Visual Arts Report

Last term in Visual Art, Years 7 & 8 concentrated on Street/Community Art. We were looking at signs and symbols and how they are used in the real world and how they are used to brand products. The students made posters for the school about not bullying, not littering and not wrecking the school with graffiti, and we talked about mural art and will make murals this term for the school. The students also designed posters for the fete, and made the Fete Day and the NAIDOC Day March banner, as well as designs for the stools in our classroom. This taught them skills in drawing, painting, calligraphy and stencil making. This term we are using our stencil making skills to create singlet tops, t-shirts and bag designs. Each student will have their own original top and bag made from their own designs. This term we have started out our visual arts with landscape drawing, with us going down to the Weir to learn how to get our hand/eye skills up to be able to learn to draw our environment. Another class is currently painting boomerangs that came all the way from Laddie Timberry in Huskisson. Year 9 & 10 Photodigital Media last term took photos out in the community. See below. This term we are learning Photoshop, so we can learn to manipulate images and make them into Fine Art.

Also this term we will be doing some work experience/mentoring with a film crew that are coming up to Brewarrina to make a feature film. We are also planning some community art which might be possible if we have time in our busy schedule. Year 9 & 10 Visual Art have been working on their drawing, watercolour and painting skills, with Matt Simpson doing a wonderful mixed media painting based on the theme for NAIDOC 2012, the tent embassy. It’s based on a painting by Joseph Lycett which was painted almost 200 years ago.

Matt’s painting. Jacob in Photo digital Media. All up, we are creating so much in art and learning about the how to, of and why we do it! Miss Nolan
