From the Pastor’s Desk I n 2012, mainly through the efforts of Al Hansell and

Frank Fox, a forward looking plan 20/20 – was launched to invigorate the efforts of the Lancaster Church of the Brethren. This is to be a vital and effec-tive community of faith as the 2020 decade unfolds. It consisted of four different action items which were membership and attendance growth, small group focus, outreach projects and spiritual renewal ef-forts. We are now about half the way to the target date of 2020 so the following is a progress report for your infor-mation and evaluation. 1. Membership and Attendance growth—This part

of 20/20 has leadership consisting of Ken Harnish, Ben Lattimer, Ed Moran, Adam and Kristen Snoke and Calvin Wenger. This taskforce is giving special attention presently to all facets of our greeting and welcoming, from beginning to conclusion, of all four of our worship services. To this end, each one of us is urged to be attentive to those attending our ser-vices who are unknown to us and approach that per-son with a warm and welcoming manner. In this manner all guests will feel glad they came or new relationships will be formed with members not known before.

2. Small Group focus—With the leadership of Cindy Lattimer, several successful and short term small

group efforts have been offered over the past sever-al years. The most recent – reading through the New Testament in chronological order - was ac-companied by weekly small group discussions in-volving over 120 persons.

3. Outreach projects—Two very important endeav-ors in this area have been offered with the inspired coordination of Otto Schaudel and Ray Leckrone. Both of them were targeted to raise $100,000 for important pursuits outside our regular outreach budget. The first one was to raise support for medi-cal efforts in the very poor country of Haiti and was fully funded. The current one to support the Lan-caster County Council of Churches Food Hub on North Queen Street is well on the way with 35% already given.

4. Spiritual Renewal efforts—With Jay Wenger lead-

ing the way, a special weekend (Seeking First the Kingdom) to renew our congregation spiritually is planned for November 12 & 13, 2016. This will fea-ture Dr. Jeff Carter, President of Bethany Theologi-cal Seminary as the main speaker.

How much of our time, energy, efforts and resources are all of us willing to devote to LCOB? Whatever our collective answer is – the future of the Lancaster church depends on it. --Calvin Wenger

Brethren Highlights is published monthly by the Lancaster Church of the Brethren. The absolute deadline for the August issue is July 15, 2016.

Brethren Highlights July 2016

Upcoming Sermon Series: Altitude Changes

Beginning July 24, we will have a series of ser-mons based on biblical texts that all take place on a mountain. Typically we think of mountaintop experi-ences as times or places where we meet God - and cer-tainly that happens in these texts - but there is more to it than that. There is the journey to the mountain, the preparation, the particularity of place. How does changing our altitude change our perspective on life? On God? On the world around us? And how might we let those changes in us begin to change the world? During the series, look for opportunities to change your perspective by changing your place - we will have opportunities to worship in a different place and serve in a different place. We will also have stories and testi-mony from mem-bers about times they have been to a different place - to a mountaintop to meet God- and come back changed. Maybe a change in altitude is just what you need! --Pastor Cindy

Farewell Breakfast for EYN 2016 Visitors

On Saturday, July 9, at 8:00 a.m. here at Lancaster Church of the Brethren in the Family Life Center there will be a farewell breakfast for the EYN visitors. The cost is $10.00 per person. This is sponsored by the LCOB Wednesday Morning Prayer Breakfast Group. Please RSVP to the LCOB church office with the number of people planning to attend by July 1. (email: [email protected] or call 717-397-4751). NOTE: Meet, Greet and Sharing Time – After the breakfast, the following three EYN Brethren will give brief (10 minute) presentations: Rev, Joel Billi, EYN President; Rev. Dauda Andrawus Gaya, Kulp Bible School Provost; and Markus Gamache, Chairman of the Christian/Muslim Interfaith Group.

An offering will also be received for the EYN Crisis Fund. If you have any questions, please contact Monroe Good.

Greeters Needed! Being greeted as you enter church for the 1st time or for the 531st time is very imported to the life and

vitality of this or any congregation. The feeling of be welcome and ac-

cepted are basic human needs. Please consider joining the Greeter Team to welcome new

and old faces to our Sunday worship services. If you are interested in taking a month ONCE a year, please

call Robbin Finkbiner at 394-3748. You are not too old or young for this important job!

Sanctuary’s Facelift Update This summer our sanctuary's facelift will be contin-ued and completed. The plan: The chancel steps will be widened (mid-July) Carpet will be replaced (mid-July) Matching railings will be added at the chancel

steps (August). As the carpet is replaced, there may be one Sunday where the carpeting will not be finished. We're all looking forward to this improvement enhancement in our worship space. --Mark Forsha

Climbers & Home Builders The Climbers and Home Builders will meet at Hoss’s Steak House for Sunday Brunch on July 10 at 11:45 a.m.

Please bring coins for the Brethren Disaster Relief Auc-tion jar and items to donate to the LCCC Food Bank.

“It is your attitude, not your

aptitude, that determines

your altitude.” -Zig Ziglar

Brethren Highlights July 2016

For many years, some years more than others, LCOB has been involved with cross cultural ministries. On January 15, 2015, when we welcomed and received the Maranatha Multicultural Fellowship (30 MMF mem-bers) into membership, LCOB officially became a Cross Cultural Congregation. A committee, Cross Cultural Connections (CCC),

has been established to create and promote special opportuni-ties, ideas, activities and events that might encourage our mem-bers to be more involved in mul-ticultural ministry so that LCOB becomes a growing and effective cross cultural congregation. In the months ahead you will be hearing more from CCC. This month we want to re-

mind everyone about the 2016 MEPA Mission Trip to the Dominican Republic (July 19 - 29). This is not some-thing new. In 2004 Arelis and Alix Sable organized and directed the first MEPA Mission Trip. The upcoming trip will be the ninth MEPA trip since 2004. MEPA has been a long time ministry of Maranatha. Now since we became one congregation in January 2015, our Marana-tha Brothers and Sisters desire that MEPA be a LCOB Mission. This is why Cross Cultural Connections has joined Maranatha in sponsoring MEPA 2016. Some of you are asking, "What does MEPA mean?" The foundation scripture for MEPA is Isaiah 59:1 "Behold, Yahweh's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; nor His ear dull, that it cannot hear." (World English Bible) The motto for MEPA: Extended Hands that

Help. In Spanish: Manos Extendidas Para Ayudar. MEPA: Extended Hands That Help is a mission project organized for serving people locally and glob-ally. MEPA's Vision and Mission was suggested by Arelis' parents. It was co-founded by Arelis and Alix Sable. Praise God, MEPA is now a Mission of Lancaster Church of the Brethren! Another foundation Scripture for MEPA is Matt. 28:19 & 20 "Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Farther and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I will be with you always, to the very end of the age." (NIV) We invite and encourage you to volunteer for the MEPA Mission in one or more of the following ways:

1) Be a participant on the MEPA Mission Trip 2) Be a prayer partner for MEPA Mission 3) Give a monetary donation toward the ex-

penses of the Mission Thank you for your support and prayers. If you choose to be part of the group mission trip going to the Dominican Republic, you need to register RE-AL SOON (no later than Friday, July 2). The cost per person is $900. This includes the airline ticket, meals, lodging and other expenses. Financial help is available for anyone who cannot afford the entire amount. You must have a valid passport. We look forward to your participation. If you need more information or have any questions re-garding the MEPA Mission Trip, please contact Alix Sable (342-8847) or Arelis Sable (342-1512), [email protected]. For more information about the CCC, contact Alix or Monroe Good (391-3614).

The Gift Shop, Thrift Shop and Work Shop at Brethren Village are open the first Saturday of every month from 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 noon. Stop by and see what all there is for you to purchase. The next OUTDOOR WHEELCHAIR WALK at Brethren Village is Thursday, July 28, 10:30 a.m. If you are available to push wheelchairs, meet at the Welcome Center 10:15 a.m. Many thanks to all the volunteers who so graciously made center pieces, party favors, angel food cakes, do-nated lemonade, paper products, ice cream Dixie cups,

snacks, provided entertainment and time to set up and serve at the Brethren Village June birthday party. The residents had a very enjoyable afternoon. Our church is signed up to supervise a Saturday af-ternoon Bingo at Brethren Village. If your calendar is clear maybe you could help with this activity on Satur-day, August 20 at 1:45 p.m. in the Courtyards. The game is from 2:00 to 3:00. --Marilyn Hummel, BV Key Person LCOB, 295-9121

Adult Education Opportunities July 2016

9:00 - 9:45 Sunday Mornings

The following classes are open to everyone. All are invited.

The Chapel Bible Study Group meets in the chapel. The overall theme for the June - August quarter is our need to be A New Creation in Christ, because of the sin and disobedience to which human beings are continually attract-ed. In July the scriptures will be from the OT book, Psalms, and the NT book, Romans, as we focus on the theme, A World Gone Awry. We use the Brethren publication, A Guide for Biblical Studies, this month written by Jim Eik-enberry, co-pastor of the Mount Wilson COB in Lebanon County. Teachers will be Al Cott, Bob Frick, and Cal-vin Wenger. Ben Lattimer will be leading a Bible Study in Room 170 which started in June and continues through the summer. All are welcome to attend. The Thoughtful Life Class, which usually meets in rooms 162-163, is taking a break in July and will resume in August.

Connections is a casual conversation group meeting in Room 200 for coffee. It is open to everyone interested in connecting with other people on a more personal level. Follow the Connections signs to Room 200 on the sec-ond floor. For details, contact Rich Bowser at 201-8734 of [email protected]. The Maranatha ministry offers an adult Sunday School class in Spanish and English, taught by Arelis Sable. Fur-ther details are available from her.

To the Dear Prayer Warriors of LCOB, On behalf of my husband and me, I want to thank all of you for your prayers for Jim. There is no other gift that is more appreciated than the gift of your prayers for Jim. Just to know that others are praying for him lifts my spirit and the deeply felt gratitude that such wonder-ful people are holding him up before God. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. God bless you all, Jean Forsha -----------------------------------------------------------------

Our deepest thanks for the many cards, thoughts and prayers extended to us in the loss of our son David. Your expressions have been most helpful and support-ive in our bereavement. --Don and Lorraine Dotterer ----------------------------------------------------------------- I would like to thank all the members of the congre-gation who sent me 80th Birthday wishes and those who expressed wishes in person. Many thanks to such a car-ing congregation. Sincerely, Joe Peffley (the older twin)

Thank you for the cards and gifts for my 80th birth-day. Your thoughtfulness was very much appreciated. Joanne Mellinger ----------------------------------------------------------------- Thank you to all who helped to make the Lawn Par-ty on June 8, a huge success. Designing, copying and organizing delivery of fliers, table set-up, picking and hulling strawberries, pie shell making, food donating, preparing and serving food, greeting, kid's zone, cashier-ing, and clean-up afterwards are the many things all of you helped us to achieve. The Family Life Center was full. We had to set up more tables and chairs. Hopefully you were able to meet and greet someone new that night. There were 28 strawberry pies ordered and anoth-er 8 pies sold as slices. That's a total of 36! Thank you to the Myers Farm (Philip and Gloria) for their generous donation of approximately 80 quarts of the delicious berries. Thanks to all that came out to support our event with their appetites too! Diana Wiker Chair Hospitality Ministry Team

Thank You, LCOB!
