From the Pastor’s Desk P eople in churches have been trusting me to be their pastor since I was 20 years old. I got an early start in part because I am an Anglo guy, in a denomination that privileged Anglo guys. I didn’t have a desk at that first church - it didn’t even have running water, just an outhouse. I wrote my sermons at the dining room table in the crowded apartment I shared with four other guys, three of whom were engaged. It was kind of like the classic stateroom sce-ne in the Marx Brother’s A Night At The Opera. But I was and still am fiercely grateful for being invited into the lives of the folks in that church which had stopped meeting, but be-gan again, when two youth who lived nearby asked if they would ever have services again. I am grateful I was able to baptize those two young wom-en, organize a Sunday School class for them, and lead their parent’s marriage vow renewal. No desk required.

Since then, I’ve had desks at other churches, but honestly, sitting at them chafes me the way Sunday clothes chafed Huckleberry Finn - itchy and restrictive. I love to read and study, both the Scriptures and the other books and media I need in order to be the follower of Jesus and the pastor I aspire to be. I hope I never lose the amazed gratitude I feel that I get paid as my full-time job to study the Scripture and use my three-pound brain to think the best thoughts about God I can. But I can do

that in a coffee shop where I’m more likely to connect with someone who’s not yet a follower of Jesus. No desk required.

In addition to study and the opportunities to teach and preach it gives birth to, the other part of being a pastor I cherish most is listening to people, developing relationships with them. One of the best parts of these

first two months of being one of your pastors has been taking youth in twos and threes and fours out for coffee and listening to their lives. As I learn who they are, who God is making them, I’m becoming their pastor. And I’m grateful for the op-portunity to hear their stories and

earn their trust. No desk required. Jesus teaches us to pray that the space where his

Kingship is real and recognized gets bigger every day (“May your kingdom come”). I believe deeply that Jesus dreams of his Kingdom growing, not in the facilities and programs of the church, but on playgrounds, within households, among co-workers, in classrooms and on sports teams. What happens in the facilities and pro-grams of the church happens to get us ready for Jesus to use to build his Kingdom in all those other places. Like Gerard Manley Hopkins says: “Christ plays in ten thou-sand places.” No desk required.

Hygiene Kits on November 6 If you have been associated with the Lancaster CoB for at least 6 months, you will know that an ongo-ing outreach project of our congregation is to assemble 600 hygiene kits every spring and fall. Our next sched-uled date to put together the kits is Sunday, Novem-ber 6, immediately after the 10:15 worship services. If you are wondering what happens to these kits after we put them together and deliver them to New Windsor, Maryland, dur-ing the first 6 months of 2016, CWS distributed more than 15,000 hygiene kits within the US where disaster struck, 8,750 to Honduras and 30,000 hygiene kits to Syria. This fall we anticipate our costs to be $3,500 to purchase the supplies needed for the 600 kits and pay Church World Service for shipping and handling. Please support this effort with your donations and your hands. Checks should be made out to Lan-caster CoB and placed it in the offering plate. Be sure to indicate hygiene kits on the memo line. Any questions, contact Suzanne Schaudel.

Climbers and Homebuilders Climbers and Homebuilders will meet for brunch

at 11:45 a.m. on Sunday, October 9, at the Centerville Diner, 100 S. Center-ville Road, Lancaster, in the shopping center. Each person will be able to or-der their food from the menu at his/her seat. Please bring food donations for the food bank.

Sunday Night Movie & Film Discussion

MIRACLES FROM HEAVEN (2016 - Jennifer Garner, Queen Latifah best-known

actors in a large cast) Based on real-life events, this intriguing drama re-counts the story of young Annabel Beam, who suffers

from an incurable digestive disor-der. But when a string of miracles leads to her complete recovery, Annabel's family and doctors are mystified. “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a mira-cle.” - Albert Einstein. Yep, this Einstein quote is used in this film

during a testimonial from the Jennifer Garner charac-ter, Christy Beam. "Miracles from Heaven" is adapted from the Chris-ty Beam book documenting the incredible true story of the Beam family of Burleson, TX. When the mother, Christy, discovers her middle daughter, Anna (Kylie Rogers) has a rare, incurable intestinal disease she be-comes a tenacious advocate for Anna's healing. Christy is supported by her husband (Martin Henderson) and by her church; but when it looks as if all efforts and treatment have failed to control or cure the disease, Christy's faith becomes a victim. That will set the stage for this profound true story of faith and miracles.

You’re Invited to a Mystery Tour! Come join the Seekers Fellowship Group on Satur-day, November 19, and have fun “Discovering Lancas-ter County’s Early Roots.” The tour will be led by Jay Wenger and includes many interest-ing stops as well as a full course lunch with an Amish family. We will leave the church parking lot at 8:30 a.m. and return at approxi-mately 5:00 p.m. The cost is $80.00 per person which includes motor coach transportation, all attraction ad-missions, meal and tips. A limited number of seats are available, so it is first come, first served. Money is due by October 30. Checks are payable to Ken or Linda Harnish, mailbox #120. Any questions, contact Ken or Linda at 569-4692.

Attention 65+ Crowd Something New…If you or your spouse is or will be over 65 next year, would you be interested in attending a banquet? The Hospitality Ministry Team would like to get an idea of how many folks at our church this would include as we are in the planning stage for such an event. Please call Diana Wiker at 291-9348 if you are interested and or have any questions.

Planning An Exit Strategy Sponsored by the Pathfinder Fellowship Group.

On Sunday, October 30, at 2:00 p.m. in either Room 162 or the Family Life Center the Pathfinder Committee invites the congregation to Planning An Exit Strategy. They have assembled a panel of professionals who will conduct an in-formative session regarding end of life plan-ning. It is never too soon to think about stra-tegic planning regarding end of life. If you

have unanswered questions in this area of your life, as many of us do, this is an activity to mark on your calen-dar. The panel will include Pastor Jeff Rill, Scott Bru-

baker from Groff's Family Funeral Services and Estate Attorney Anthony (Tony) Schimaneck from Morgan, Hallgren, Cross-well & Kane, P.C. Lancaster.

Women’s Fellowship Breakfast Come on October 22 at 9:00 a.m. and enjoy

breakfast and be spiritually enriched as Sheri Weaver, former Interim Pastor Fall a year ago,

speaks on the topic “Beyond Worry: Embracing God’s More.” Jesus gets it right, doesn’t He? We worry a lot about food. We worry a lot about fashion. We worry a lot about accumulating, accom-plishing, and the value others perceive in us. Jesus acknowl-

edges our greatest worries. Yet, in his most famous sermon recorded in Matthew 6, Jesus invites us beyond worry and announces there is far more to life. “Look,” Jesus invites, at the birds of the air and the wildflowers in the field; see how they live “free and unfettered,” “careless in the care of God” (Matthew 6:25-26, The Message). As we come to fellowship in retreat together, we will consider the shocking good news of God’s lavish love and encour-age one another with practical wisdom for our jour-neys beyond worry to an embrace of God’s more, abundant life. Don’t forget to invite a friend!

Support LCOB Preschool by Grocery Shopping

Do you know you can help support Lancaster Brethren Preschool just by using your Giant Rewards card? If you are interested in supporting a great Preschool pro-gram, which many of the children of this church attend, please fill out the Giant rewards sheet found in the gathering place with your name and bonus card number. If you filled one out last year, you do not need to do

so again. Please place finished forms in Danielle Shu-lenberger’s mailbox (#79). Thank you!

Wednesday Night Live Continues This is the twelfth year of Wednesday Night Live

at the Lancaster CoB. Each Wednesday evening through November 16, we gather in the FLC at 5:00 p.m. for a tasty supper prepared by LCOB volunteer staff. After the meal, participate in an engaging class taking place 6:15 - 7:15 in Rooms 162-163.

In October Bob Frick will continue a fascinating series of classes, Together They Made The Modern American Presidency, highlighting the contributions of 12 recent presidents:

    September 28 – Introduction, and F. D. Roosevelt October 5 – H. S. Truman and D. D. Eisenhower October 12 – J. F. Kennedy and L. B. Johnson October 19 – R. M. Nixon, G. Ford & J. E. Carter October 26 – R. Reagan and G. H. W. Bush November 2 – W. J. Clinton and G. W. Bush

Each week Bob gives a PowerPoint presentation in his unique, lively and good-humored style.

Wednesday evenings are truly alive at the Lancaster Church of the Brethren. We hope you will come and join in the fun and fellowship.

Special Alert from Cross Cultural Connections (CCC)

The Crisis in Nigerian, August Brethren Highlights, announced the Nigerian Workcamps to Begin. Soon this information was shared in the LCOB worships. By the beginning of September, several people ex-pressed interest in participating on the first workcamp set for November 4-21. The following are now regis-tered to be part of the November Workcamp: Anneliz Rosario, Linford Moyer, Eric Ramirez, Elliot Ramirez, Juan Ortega and Luis Rodriguez. We praise God for this re-sponse! CCC will be making arrange-ments for a spe-cial sendoff fel-lowship meal and time of sharing and prayer for the work campers on Sunday, October 30 at 11:30 p.m. Details of this event will be announced after the next CCC meeting on October 10.

October PMT Energy Tip Remember to close your fireplace damper (unless a fire is burning). Keeping the damper open is like leaving a window wide open dur-ing the winter, allowing warm air to escape through the chimney.

    Brethren Highlights October 2016

What are we doing in Louisiana? The people of Louisiana have been devastated by

flooding: thousands lost everything they had. With our support the Church of the Brethren has provided: 1. Care for children and families who have been

displaced by flooding and are living in American Red Cross shelters, by five teams of volunteers from Children’s Disaster Services (CDS). For over 35 years, Children’s Disaster Services (CDS) has been meeting the needs of children by setting up child care centers in disaster shelters and disaster assistance centers across the nation. Specially trained to respond to traumatized children, volun-teers provide a safe, calm and reassuring presence in the midst of chaos such as the massive flooding in Louisiana.

    2. Clean-up buckets and baby care kits through shipments of relief supplies on behalf of Church World Service (CWS) from the Church of the Brethren’s Material Resources Center in New Windsor, Maryland. (At least 1,400 clean-up buckets and 100 cartons of baby care kits were provided.) The Material Resources Center warehouses and ships relief goods on behalf of ecumenical partners and humanitarian aid organizations.

To support this and similar relief efforts, donations can be made, either online at www.brethren.org/edf or by check to Emergency Disaster Fund, Church of the Brethren, 1451 Dun-dee Ave., Elgin, IL 60120.

    - Ray Leckrone, for the Outreach Ministry Team

CROP Walk on October 16 Did you know:

If women farmers had the same access to re-sources as men, the number of hungry in the world could be reduced by up to 150 million.

1 out of 6 children -- roughly 100 million -- in developing countries is underweight.

One way to fight hunger locally and globally is to sup-port the annual CROP Walk. One-quarter of your donations to CROP will be used by the Lancaster County Council of Church-es Food Bank to help feed the hungry in our area. The remaining funds are distrib-uted around the world by Church World Service.

Carlos Schaudel is walking and asking for spon-sors. Please sign up directly with Carlos in the Gather-ing Area. Checks should be made out to CWS/CROP and given to Carlos.

Get it on the Church Calendar! Make sure it’s on the church calendar! What? You say! Is your fellowship group having an event here at the

church or off site? Get it on the calendar! Is your Ministry Team having a meeting other than

the 2nd Tuesday of the month? Get it on the calen-dar!

Is your committee having a meet-ing? Get it on the calendar!

How do you get your event/meeting on the calendar? By calling the church office (397-4751) and speaking to either Tiffany Dickel or Linda Harnish. Not only does this help Tiffany and Linda know how to plan doors to lock and unlock, it

helps other groups plan events as well. It keeps rooms and dates from getting double booked. You can always view the church calendar in real-time on the LCOB website by going to www.lancob.org. 1) Click “Media Center,” 2) “Facilities Calendar,” then 3) “Go to Facilities Calendar.” If you then “bookmark” the page you can easily access it every time. As always, if you have any questions, please call the church office.
