AMBERS Welcome to the online programme from Cheshunt FC.  There arelinks on most pages to other web sites, which we are expanding allthe time. Please try the links  on the fixtures page  that take youstraight to the league and cup fixtures. Likewise, clicking on thesponsors pages and where our competitors badge appears  will takeyou directly to their sites too. We welcome the Players Officials and Supporters of BrentwoodTown, we play in different divisions these days but both teams &players will be familiar with each other. A good training session replaced the league match last Saturdayafter original opponents Bracknell Town had an FA Trophy matchtaking precedence. We offered four clubs in a similar position  theopportunity to bring their league match with us forward, while theweather & pitches are good, however we received four 'No ThankYou' probably due to the good run of form we are enjoyingcurrently.   So while league action suspended, we had the Herts FA Cup away atKings Langley, coming back from one down to win 2-1, we meetHadley FC in the next round. Craig also took a team over to EastLondon to play Paul Martin's Romford FC in a friendly match and theopportunity to build some match fitness & look at a few trialists too.  For the record, the Ambers ran out 7-0 winners with goals fromWoods Garness 2  Akinsanya 2 Sapps, Chingoka & Sam Kifwasima. Our thanks to Romford & congratulations on the planning consentas they continue the road back to running & operating their ownground back in Romford Enjoy The Match.       Howard *  Please note Cheshunt FC  currently operate a no dog policy (except guide dogs & hearing dogs)

The Views of the Chairman

I'd like to extend a warm welcome to theplayers, staff and committee of BrentwoodTown for this evening's Velocity Trophy CupMatch.  I note fate drew Brentwood againstWhitstable Town from the Bostik South inthe FA Trophy, and the winner of this matchwill meet Whitstable or Greenwich Boroughin the next round. Perhaps as Brentwoodwon 3-1 at the week end , they will allow usa crack at Whitstable in the Velocity Trophy3rd round? It is good to see our tenants Spurs Ladiesdoing so well, they are now top of theFAWSL2 by 5 points,

There is no truth in the rumours we have put a 7dayer in for their striker, but we should of courselook to see how we can continue to support theirsuccess, and take any learning into our own setup. Spurs Ladies are generating a solid fanbase, something we too are looking to do, and so thisweek we welcome Tom Ritchie to the Cheshuntbehind the scenes team. Tom is going to bring his expertise & experienceto help us with our social media coverage. Withimproved exposure & of course the Ambers TVclips provided by video expert Alex Kennard in theCamera tower (give him a wave). we hope toattract more supporters to share this excitingjourney with.  Enjoy today’s game.

IN THE DUGOUT WITH

CRAIG EDWARDS

Good Evening & welcome to our opponents Brentwood Town FC.   An interesting match at Kings Langley saw a number of players come into thesquad and perform well enough to secure the win to progress in the Herts FASenior Challenge Cup.  A second match of the week, a last minute friendly with Romford FC saw us ease toa 7-0 win with a number of trialists present in the team as I continue to  strengthen the squad where possible. It seems a little excessive, but when we arepicking up the injuries we need the cover. Hallett will be nursing a hamstring, I don'texpect Kyle back until the new year, Emiel has a problem with his knee, and AliCherenti has been out with flu. Its been good to see Harry back in action betweenthe sticks, especially as Bobby is nursing an old knee injury, we have options ifneeded. Our opponents tonight recorded a decent win at the week end & should present uswith a decent challenge before we return to league action at the week end.  Enjoy the Match !

Brentwood Town FC  Recent History

The management team of Steve Witherspoon andAmin Levitt led the team tosuccess 2007/08. Therewere good runs in both the FA Cup and FA Trophybut, despite amassing an impressive 77 leaguepoints, they finished sixth in the Isthmian DivisionOne North and just missed out on a play-off place. Steve Witherspoon stood down at the end of the2007/08 season, and new manager Carl Griffiths andassistant Scott Canham had to rebuild the squad aftera number of that successful team moved on. Despitethis, the team made a tremendous start to theIsthmian League season, remaining unbeaten untilmid-November, and eventually finished in third place, but were beaten by Waltham Abbey in the play-offsemi-final. The start of 2009/10 season saw another change ofmanagement with the experienced Les Whitton takingover and aiming to build on the success of recentseasons. A season of consolidation ended with a mid-table position but in January 2011 Les stood downand Steve Witherspoon once more took over and heled the team on a remarkable run that only endedwith an extra time defeat in the Ryman North play-offfinal at Wingate & Finchley. The next two seasons saw a mid-table finish and forthe 2013/14 season, Les Whitton returned as 1stteam manager until he stood down in November.Adam Flanagan and Danny Dafter were thenappointed as joint managers and the team madegood progress, picking up enough points to movethem comfortably clear of the Ryman North relegationzone by the end of the season. In 2014/15, with much of the same squad from theprevious season, including ten players that hadprogressed through the youth setup, they exceededall expectations by finishing fourth to reach theRyman North play-offs. The season then had aperfect ending with a penalty shoot-out win over AFCSudbury in the semi-final and an amazing second halfperformance resulting in a 5-0 win against Thurrock inthe play-off final, meaning promotion to the IsthmianPremier for the first time.

The two managers, Flanagan and Dafter, both movedon after this success and the Club appointed DeanHoldsworth as their new manager. Dean played forWimbledon and Bolton Wanderers and had previouslymanaged at Redbridge, Newport County, AldershotTown and Chelmsford City. But in November 2015,Dean stood aside due to increased businesscommitments and the experienced George Borg tooktemporary charge until Mick Flanagan, father of Adam, was appointed for the rest of the season. However, thatfirst season in the Ryman Premier ended in relegationback to Ryman North and for the 2016/17 seasonformer Wadham Lodge manager Tony Ievoli wasappointed. The 2016/17 season saw a battle to avoid a secondsuccessive relegation. In March, Craig Shipman wasappointed as first team manager and he steered theteam to safety, taking 22 points from the last ninematches to finish with 56 points and a creditable 14thposition in Isthmian North.

The art of tackling was something many of us heldas dear in the game as we did the skills of ‘The Foxin the Box’; for every Jimmy Greaves or Denis Lawthere was a Norman Hunter or a Nobby Stiles. Noteam tried to play without a hard man, no team wouldever dare. The game back in pre Premier Leagueand Champions League loved both the hero and thevillain and understood the respective merits of each. Not so today. This year sadly saw the passing of thewonderful Dave Mackay the former Spurs andScotland Captain. A man who helped Spurs to their1960/61 double and who even more famouslythreatened to throw Billy Bremner over the WhiteHart Lane Stand for an over the top tackle that couldhave broken his only recently mended leg! Dave wasno stranger to a hard tackle but on that occasion sawhis opponent as a dirty little git rather than a skilledartisan of the ‘proper hard tackle’! Players like DaveMackay, Peter Storey or Vinnie Jones would neverfinish a game these days, indeed it’s most unlikelythey’d even make the team sheet such would betheir astronomically high risk assessment score! These days the leaders of the modern day gamesuch as Michel Platini advocate for contact freefootball and suggest we will all enjoy the game morefor it? Absolute nonsense and I wonder if a quick pollwent on around the stand today if we’d find muchsupport for Michel’s view.

The Game Back Then, THE DEMISE OF THE TACKLE The Amber Scribe , Tony Madden Writes

doubt it very much. I am unashamedly a fan of thetackling game. I loved the players who could tackleand I loved those who could avoid the tackle. Anyonewho ever saw the famous clip of Chopper Harris ofChelsea trying to cut George Best in half as he ranfrom his own half to score for Manchester United willknow what I mean. Chopper knew he had to stop him,but George knew it as well and he wasn’t for backingout. He met him head on, hurdled the thigh highchallenge and went past him moving on to the penaltyarea where he went around the sprawling PeterBonetti and plonked it in the Chelsea net. It remainsto this day a thing of beauty. Chopper was more thanready to take a booking or worse for the team, andGeorge saying ‘come on my son try it’! If the modernday equivalent was Christiano Ronaldo runningtowards the same Chopper Harris what would be theresult? A diving and rolling CR screaming in falsepain, and a Manchester United free kick half way upthe pitch. I know what spectacle I want to watch. Weneed to see more physical contact not less andfootball is a lesser product now it’s been so denied ofthis skill. Worse still I’d further argue it’s actually nowcreated a risk, as serious injuries are occurring notbecause players are dirty but because they aren’tused to coping with the art of the tackle. It’srefreshing when watching non-league football thattackling remains a more fundamental part of thegame and that as a consequence the diving androlling around are much less common. Again goaround the stand on any day in any ground and askthe fans what they hate and I guarantee that divingand lack of tackling will be very close to the topobjection to the modern product. Next issue I will bearguing to bring back the long lank greasy hair stylesof the seventies, plain black football boots, scarvestied around the wrist and the two pint paper beercups. Tony Madden

Cheshunt 0 Marlow 0 Star Man: Bobby Mason Attendance: 164 Bostik League Marlow started by far the better asa sluggish Cheshunt failed to getinto their stride. Marlow playedwide & caused a degree ofconcern until the Home defenceorganised themselves to thethreat. The first half belonged tothe goalkeepers with BobbyMason for Cheshunt coming outon top in several one on ones, and Simon Grant for Marlowmaking a spectacular double saveto keep out a rasping drive. The second half saw both sidescreate chances but fail to makethem count. As the half went on &it was clear one goal would win it,and the intensity grew. Marlow hitthe post late on & Cheshunt'sKojo Awotwi shot straight at Grantwhen put through. Honours even and probably thefair result.

Star Man: Pat Adamson Attendance: Herts FA Snr Challenge Cup R1 This was another disappointingresult for Kings Langley as theycontinued to try to solve thepuzzle of producing goodperformances with little or noreward. A first half penalty sawkings take the lead, but a lapse indefending a set piece was punished by a Mark Hughesheader from a free kick on thehour to draw Cheshunt level anda backpedalling defence allowed Patrick Adamson, run from hisown half to drive a shot home effectively settling the tie. However, the abiding memory ofthe night will be the performanceof Ambers goalkeeper BobbyMason, who pulled off twooutstanding double saves in thelast twenty minutes as Kings dideverything but put the ball in thenet.

(12,777) Wednesday 10th October 2018.Royston Town 3 Ely City 3 (Thurlow Nunn YouthLeague Cambridge Division) (7.45pm kick off) att50 approx. Royston are one of the sides I’veidentified as potential league winners, with, at thetime of writing, St Neots Town and Cambridge Citybeing the other two. By the end of the week I’d seenall three sides play and I’d seen nothing to changemy mind, except to say that none of the three teamsare outstanding. Tonight Royston took the lead on 6minutes with a neatly placed shot into the corner ofthe net. But Ely, who were a decent side, levelledwhen the scorer found part of the goal to aim atwhere the Crows keeper was either unsighted or notin a position to get to the ball. But on 35 minutesRoyston were back in the lead, with the Ely keeperpossibly dazzled by the bright pink fluorescent bootsthe scorer was wearing. They looked like giganticslippers. But at half time he changed them for ablack pair and it was with these he extended thehosts lead on 58 minutes. I didn’t actually see thisgoal as at that very moment what looked like anambulance was entering the ground. But in fact itwas a Manchetts breakdown van, come to assist aparked car inside the ground.

But in fact it was the Crows who needed hisassistance just as much as on 66 minutes Ely pulled agoal back. Royston spent the rest of the match tryingto see the game out, whereas with renewedenthusiasm and energy Ely believed they could getsomething out of this. In fact they did as on 90(+4)minutes a header from a corner went in off thecrossbar to give them an ultimately deserved draw. 98. (12,778) Thursday 11th October 2018. Histon 0Cambridge City 3 (Thurlow Nunn Youth LeagueCambridge Division) att 105 approx. I don’t get tothe Glassworld as often as I used to and tonight I onlysaw one person here that I knew, namely Steve whoamongst other duties is the announcer for thesegames. I made my way to the Press area, where Inormally sit for these games only to find the laptoptables they have here having been turned intosomething of a café by some of the parents and theyhad almost become plates so they could eat their fish& chips! So I sat elsewhere! These are interestingtimes for Histon in that their first team, once of theNational League, have picked up again and arecurrently top of the Thurlow Nunn League. Theirground is also graded to play in the Football League.A couple of years ago they had one of the best youthset ups around, but with regular relegations this fellaway. Tonight it showed a bit as their players weren’tup to the standard of City’s and despite their bestefforts it showed. The early stages of the game werephysical and there was a bit of verbals directedtowards the ref as well. But chats to both captains atdifferent times quelled that and they then got on withthe football. As a contest it was still alive at half time, although by now City had taken a two goal lead byscoring on 30 and 36 minutes. They were the betterside although Histon were still competing. Later Ifound out that an elderly spectator had been hit by theball in this period, with the City player responsibleapologising to him at the break. As I didn’t see any ofthis I’m starting to wonder if it was me who got hit bythe ball! City got their third goal on 49 minutes, endingHiston’s chances of winning. But they kept going, nowdefending better and their keeper pulled off one ortwo good saves.

99. (12,779) Friday 12th October 2018. AFCDunstable 0 Witham Town 1 (Buildbase FATrophy Preliminary Round) (Played at CreaseyPark Stadium, Dunstable) att 156. Such was the popularity of this match there weremore watching this game than there was watchingEngland play in Croatia, although this was onlybecause that match was played behind closeddoors! This was an extremely windy night andalthough the actual temperature was about 19degrees, it was a tad chilly if you got caught in thewind. The game was not a great one, but it had asmuch to do with both sides being very similar inability and marking tightly, as it did with the weatherconditions. There were just two noisy peoplewatching, one of them being the Witham fan, whonearly went hoarse with his continual one manchanting. The other was an elderly home fan, whowas just loud in his encouragement. For much of thegame a goal seemed unlikely, but on 70 minutes aDunstable player almost wrestled a Witham player tothe ground inside the area and a spot kick wasgiven. Neutral hearts sank when the resultant shotwas saved, but it was parried to the taker who thistime forced the ball home. Thereafter Dunstable didtry for the equaliser but as the game remained astight as it was prior to the spot kick it was no realsurprise that a goal wouldn’t come. Witham probablyjust about deserved their win but there really waslittle to choose between the sides.

100. (12,780) Saturday 13th October 2018.Bedford Albion 9 Sandy 0 (Bedfordshire CountyLeague Division 1) (Played at Woodlands,Ashmead Road, Bedford) (11am kick off) att 149 . With no Spurs commitments to adhere to this yearI was able to see all three matches in theBedfordshire County League Hop. Thanks to thesplendid organisational work of GroundhopperCraig Dabbs and the Beds County League, particularly Peter Francis, everyone present, bothon and off the pitch seemed to enjoy themselves, with the possible exception of the match losers ofcourse. But it just goes to show what can beachieved if everyone has the same mindset.Having said that, as we approached the venue forthe first game we encountered something which noone had planned for, namely a little rain. But thatsoon disappeared, the sun came out and it turnedout to be a very warm day. I’ve been to this venueonce before, on May Bank Holiday Monday, earlierin the year and I love it. The game was played outon a pitch cut out of the side of a hill, thus offering apanoramic view of things if you stood on top of thebanking on one side. The game was unfortunatelyvery one sided. Sandy had just lost their manager afew days earlier and so perhaps they were unableto field what would have been their strongest sidehad he still been at the club. I did note that one oftheir regular goalscorers was absent today. On theother hand they’d have probably lost anyway asBedford are top of this division. So the goalsstarted to rattle in and by the time Albion were 7 upSandy no longer had any fizz! In the second halfthings were more even, due probably to the usualreasons. Sandy did hit the crossbar in this period, but overall they were well beaten by a decent side. @brianbuck66
