The top lot played her part in helping the opening day of the sale to make good gains on the figures from 2017. Laurent Benoit was involved as the price moved past €1m, but soon the battle for this filly boiled down to MV Magnier and the Phoenix Thoroughbreds team. They exchanged bids in considered fashion from around €1.4m onwards, but when the price reached €2m, this filly was destined to carry the colours of Phoenix Thoroughbreds which has enjoyed such notable success this year, courtesy of the likes of Advertise (Showcasing) and Signora Cabello (Camacho).

As well as being a sister to Alice Springs, this filly also has other quality sorts amongst her siblings. Her dam, the Listed-placed

Aleagueoftheirown (Danehill Dancer), has also produced the dual Gr.2-placed Criteria, the Gr.3 Tyros Stakes third Kingston Jamaica, this season’s multiple Gr.3 and Listed-placed runner Hence and the Australian Listed-placed Crocodile Rock (all by Galileo).

“A pedigree like that – it’s just a very, very good family and she is just a very nice filly. She is by the best, the mare has already produced the best and she has done so on the same cross. There was a lot to like about her and a trainer for her will be decided on later on,” said Dermot Farrington.

REDVERS SNAPS UP KINGMAN COLTThe Galileo filly was then followed into the ring by a superb son of Kingman from Noel O’Callaghan’s Mountarmstrong Stud. John Gosden and Anthony Stroud launched a determined bid for this colt, Lot 166, but they were unable to match David Redvers when he brought the price to €850,000.

The bay is out of the winning King’s Best mare Alexander Queen, whose five runners to date are all winners and they include the Listed Tetrarch Stakes victor Alkasser (Shamardal). The mare is herself a half-sister to the Gr.2 Queen Mary Stakes winner Anthem Alexander (Starspangledbanner) and the high-class sprinter and sire Dandy Man (Mozart).

“The sire has made a very bright start at stud and we have a very smart filly by him [Sparkle Roll]. There are a couple of others by him that we like too. This colt was an outstanding physical and we are delighted to get what we considered to be the strongest colt in the sale,” declared Redvers.

Godolphin were back in action a short while later for Lot 158, a €475,000 daughter of Australia, consigned by Whitehall Stud. Shawn Dugan and Eamonn Reilly both tried hard for this half-sister to the dual winner Saracen Knight (Camelot), but both came up short. This filly’s family includes one of Sheikh Mohammed’s outstanding middle distance three-year-olds in the Gr.1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner and sire Belmez (El Gran Senor) and the Gr.1-winning juvenile Debussy (Diesis).

“The boss, Sheikh Mohammed, bought Australia’s first group winner, Beyond Reason, and he liked this filly. She’s a very good-moving, attractive sort,” reported Stroud.

There was further cause for celebration for Mount Coote Stud, vendors of the €750,000 Sea The Stars filly, when Stephen Hillen and Kevin Ryan spent €400,000 on a Frankel (Lot 145) full-brother to Ryan’s recent first time out two-year-old winner East. Earlier this year, East set a record price at the Goresbridge Breeze-Up Sale when fetching €315,000. They are out of the Stakes-winning juvenile Vital Statistics (Indian Ridge) and from the family of the Gr.1 Cheveey Park Stakes winners Pass The Peace and daughter Embassy.

BIG PROFIT ON NO NAY NEVER FILLYAs well as consigning the session-topper, Glenvale Stud man Ciaran Conroy pulled off one of the all time great pinhooks midway through the first session when Lot 100, a No Nay Never filly, whom he had picked up for €52,000 in this ring last November, fetched €700,000 when selling to MV Magnier.

Truly the stars aligned for this most imposing of fillies, with her sire having carried all before him in his first year with runners as evidenced by the Gr.1 Middle Park Stakes success of Ten Sovereigns last weekend. Furthermore, the first produce of the dam, Starlet (Pivotal), is the promising Raakeb Alhawa (Kingman), who looked a cracking prospect with a debut success in the Haynes, Hanson & Clark Conditions Stakes at Newbury last month.

All this promised to make this filly a prized commodity and she more than lived up to expectations when she made her way to the ring. Kerri Radcliffe and Shawn Dugan engaged in a protracted battle from around €200,000 onwards, but both were forced to admit defeat when Magnier entered the fray late in the day for the filly whose family includes the former Ballydoyle great High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells).

boasted an enviable pedigree that contains another top sprinter in Battash (Dark Angel) and she repaid that huge initial outlay several times over.

“She has been bought for an international client. We know that Showcasing works well in both hemispheres and she is a full-sister to a top-class, highly rated horse,” reflected Player. “She has a lovely page, she is a stunning individual and she looks like she could be early. Also there is now a great programme of races for sprinters, which is good, and in the long term she will make a lovely addition to any broodmare band.”

GODOLPHIN TEAM ACTIVE ON DAY ONEEarlier Godolphin pounced for one of the standout fillies in the sale when going to €750,000 for a daughter of Sea The Stars offered by Mount Coote Stud. This filly (Lot 140), who was bred by the Tsui family’s Sunderland Holdings Inc, had drawn many admiring glances over the course of the last few days and she attracted more than her share of interest upon her entrance to the ring.

Amanda Skiffington tried hard for the second produce of the winning Holy Roman Emperor mare Valais Girl, but her effort came up short with Godolphin countering her every offer almost immediately. This filly is out of a granddaughter of the Gr.1 1,000 Guineas heroine Sleepytime (Royal Academy), who had been bought by Sunderland Holdings for 270,000gns at the 2015 Tattersalls December Mares Sale.

“She is a lovely, racy filly who was picked out by Sheikh Mohammed. She is by a wonderful sire and comes from a great Charlie Wacker family,” said Anthony Stroud.

Dermot Weld’s high-class middle-distance runner Free Eagle is being represented by his first yearlings this autumn and the High Chaparral horse hit the heights with his first offering this week, when the Shadwell Estates team fended off allcomers at €400,000 for a superb colt from the Irish National Stud.

Lot 3 is the latest produce of one of the stud’s excellent producers in Nebraas (Green Desert), whose progeny have previously found favour in this sale ring. This February-born colt is a half-brother to seven winners and these include the dual Gr.3-winning filly Yellow Rosebud (Jeremy) and the Listed Balanchine Stakes winner Seeharn (Pivotal), who went on to sell for 950,000gns at the end of her racing career.

As the opening session neared its conclusion, Shadwell were again to the fore when paying €500,000 for a filly from the first crop of Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum’s outstanding sprinter Muhaarar. The Hollyhill Stud offering, Lot 198, is out of the Listed winner and Gr.1-placed Beach Bunny (High Chaparral), who is already the dam of the Listed-winning duo Naadirr (Oasis Dream) and Beach Belle (Invincible Spirit).

A Zoffany colt with some big updates and from a pedigree that seems to grow stronger by the month was snapped up by Suzanne Roberts for €325,000. From Joe Hernon’s Castletown Stud, Lot 42 is a half-brother to this year’s Irish Derby hero Latrobe (Camelot), who added further lustre to the family with a recent second in the Gr.1 Irish St Leger. Their dam, the Listed-placed Question Times (Shamardal), is responsible for the Gr.3-winning Diamond Fields (Fastnet Rock) and the wide-margin Gowran maiden winner Pink Dogwood (Camelot), who could bid for Gr.1 glory in Sunday’s Prix Marcel Boussac. It was at this sale in 2015 that Roberts spent €380,000 on this colt’s winning half-brother Entangling (Fastnet Rock).

“He has been bought for Ben Wong. He owns Entangling, who went to Hong Kong, but isn’t enjoying the ground out there and will be coming back to England,” stated Ms Roberts. “No trainer has been decided for him yet, but the plan would be for him to start out over here with a view to then going to Hong Kong. He’s out of a lovely Shamardal mare who has done absolutely nothing wrong since she went to stud.”

A career in Scandinavia beckons for a €280,000 son of Camelot from the Glenvale Stud draft after he was knocked down to Peter

“She is an absolute beauty and Flash [Conroy] has always had a very high opinion of her. That is something that you always have to take note of,” said Magnier. “The sire is flying at the moment and it was great to see him win the Middle Park on Saturday with Ten Sovereigns, whom Donnacha [O’Brien] feels could be a pretty special horse for us next year.”

“When he died, Scat Daddy was a huge loss, but the signs for his sons are very encouraging. With what No Nay Never has done this season and with Caravaggio and Justify coming along, we feel that we have some very exciting stallion sons of Scat Daddy to look forward to,” added Magnier.

The first six-figure transaction of this year’s sale arrived in some style, as American agent Shawn Dugan went to €500,000 for a daughter of Frankel hailing from Baroda and Colbinstown Studs. The second lot into the ring yesterday morning made notable appeal on both sides of her pedigree and attracted the attentions of Ross Doyle and Richard Hannon, but they had to admit defeat when Shawn Dugan quickly rounded the price up to €500,000.

The April-born filly is the 11th foal out of the Indian Ridge mare Native Force, whose progeny are headed by the crack sprinter Kingsgate Native (Mujadil). His decorated career took in victories in Gr.1 Golden Jubilee Stakes and Gr.1 Nunthorpe Stakes.

“She is a gorgeous filly, just stunning,” reflected a delighted Dugan. “She is very athletic and a wonderful mover and she looks powerful too. We really liked her and she has got it all, as a daughter of a top-class sire and a half-sister to a top-class sprinter. Initially she will go back to Jamie Lloyd in England to be broken and we will take it from there.”

RINGSIDE at RINGSIDE at Goffs by Aisling Crowe

FREE EAGLE OFF TO FLYING STARTThe Irish National Stud’s first-crop sire Free Eagle was off to a flying start at the Goffs Orby Sale on Tuesday morning.

The third lot into the ring was the stud’s homebred son of the High Chaparral stallion and the unraced Green Desert mare (Nebraas). A half-brother to the Gr.3 Concorde Stakes and Gr.3 Derrinstown Stud 1,000 Guineas Trial winner Yellow Rosebud (Jeremy), the colt set firecrackers off in the ring, eventually selling to Shadwell Stud for €400,000.

“It’s a brilliant result for everyone involved and to see Sheikh Hamdan and his team buy him is fantastic,” remarked a delighted Cathal Beale of the Irish National Stud. “He will go to a good trainer and get the opportunity to provide Free Eagle with a good two-year-old next season.”

Out of a half-sister to Gr.1 Golden Jubilee Stakes winner and Gr.1 Nunthorpe Stakes and Gr.1 Sprint Cup second Malhub (Kingmambo), the bay is also related to first season sire Heerat (Dark Angel), his half-brother, the Listed Dragon Stakes winner and Gr.3 Molecomb third Ambiance (Camacho) and the Listed

and Ross Doyle. Lot 82, a son of the German Stakes winner Snow Gretel (Green Desert), is a half-brother to four winners and is from the immediate family of the of the Gr.2 Royal Lodge Stakes winner and Gr.1 2,000 Guineas second Snow Ridge (Indian Ridge). The Doyles bought this colt on behalf of clients Bente and Magne Jordanger and he will be trained by celebrated Norwegian trainer Wido Neuroth.

FRENCH SIRES POPULARAmong the other Godolphin purchases were a pair of yearlings from two of the great Irish stud farms and the second of these to come under the hammer was a daughter of the eminent French sire Le Havre, who cost €360,000. From Airlie Stud. Lot 126 is the first produce of the winning Invincible Spirit mare The Fairy, who is a half-sister to a winner of the Gr.1 Moyglare Stud Stakes in Chelsea Rose (Desert King). Chelsea Rose has since amassed a fine record at stud, with her offspring headed by this season’s Gr.1 Grand Prix de Paris and Gr.1 St Leger hero Kew Gardens (Galileo) and the French Gr.3 victrix Thawaany (Tamayuz).

Earlier Godolphin had stepped in to secure a terrific son of Siyouni from the famed nursery of Tally-Ho Stud for €350,000. A tremendous pinhooking triumph for the Mullingar-based farm, having been bought by Matt Coleman for €72,000 as a foal at Arqana last December, Lot 37 vindicated the view that he was among the most impressive individuals on offer yesterday. The bay is descended from the Meon Valley Stud mare Reprocolor, through her Gr.2-winning daughter Bella Colora (Bellypha) and granddaughter Hyabella (Shirley Heights), this colt’s grandam.

Two-Year-Old Trophy winnner Dubai Dynamo (Kyllachy), so it is a family shot through with speed and precocity.

The sale was a harbinger of the positive reception awaiting Free Eagle’s yearlings throughout Tuesday. Leaving his top-priced yearling out of the equation, he was the sire of six more yearlings to sell for a total of €365,000 and an average of €60,833 apiece, which gave their breeders a happy return on the €20,000 they paid for his services in 2016.

Four more of his first yearlings are set to come under the hammer at Goffs today, with Lot 224 bred by Ennistown Stud, Lot 229 from Corduff Stud, Airlie Stud’s Lot 268 and Lot 342 from Glenvale Stud, the vendors of yesterday’s €2m filly, all catalogued.

FIRST-TIME PINHOOKING SUCCESS FOR ROCHESTOWN LODGE STUDDavid Byrne pulled off quite a pinhooking coup with a well-bred daughter of first crop sire Muhaarar (Oasis Dream). The 28-year-old from Monasterevin in Co Kildare was consigning yearlings for the first time at Goffs, selling three choicely-bred youngsters.

The first of them into the ring was the aforementioned Muhaarar filly, a bargain buy at the Goffs February Sale for just €9,000. Bred by Miss Pat O’Kelly’s renowned Kilcarn Stud and from the family of her Champion Flame Of Tara (Artaius), the filly returned a profit when selling for €45,000 to Blandford Bloodstock - nine times her purchase price of just eight months ago.

“I got really lucky,” said the modest vendor. “She was a queen from day one and I always thought she would make a good addition to any racing or breeding yard.”

The filly’s dam, Queen Of Tara, is a Sadler’s Wells sister to the sire Second Empire (Fairy King), winner of the Gr.1 Grand Criterium and placed in the Gr.1 Irish 2,000 Guineas, Gr.1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and Gr.1 Prix du Moulin.

Their dam Welsh Love is a winning Ela-Mana-Mou half-sister to the outstanding broodmare Flame Of Tara, who foaled the Champions Salsabil (Sadler’s Wells) and leading sire Marju (Last Tycoon), as well as the Gr.3 winner and Gr.1-placed Danse Royale (Caerleon), Gr.3 (then) Railway Stakes winner Flame Of Athens (Royal Academy) and the Listed winner and sire Song of Tara (Sadler’s Wells).

Byrne previously spent a year working at Yeomanstown Stud and also spent time with Kildaragh Stud before setting up

Rochestown Lodge himself. “David O’Callaghan and Peter Kavanagh have been incredibly

helpful to me starting out and continue to be excellent guides,” Byrne remarked.

There were five yearlings sold yesterday by Muhaarar, for an average of €222,000.

NO NAY NEVER THE ANSWER FOR MCDOWELLMorna McDowall’s sole offering at this year’s Goffs’ Orby Sale was Lot 6, a filly by No Nay Never out of the Tagula mare Novat, a full-sister to the speedy Tax Free, whose 18 victories included the Gr.2 Prix du Gros-Chene. Their Fayruz half-brother Inxile counted the Gr.3 Prix de Saint-Georges amongst his 13 sprint successes, and both geldings were trained by the late Dandy Nicholls.

McDowall purchased the second foal out of the unraced Novat for €33,000 at last year’s Goffs November Breeding Stock Sale. She sold the colt on Tuesday morning to Form Bloodstock for €160,000, providing her with a handsome return on her investment.

No Nay Never’s status as leading first crop sire, and with a Gr.1 winner in Ten Sovereigns to boot, was a boon to Orby vendors of his second crop. Yesterday, 14 offspring of the Gr.1 Prix Morny winner changed hands for a total of €2,166,000 and an average price of €154,714, a very handsome profit on his 2016 stud fee of €17,500.

NATIONAL HUNT RACING REVIEWFRANCE

ROI MAGE MAKES TRIUMPHANT AUTUMN RETURN IN GASCOGNEA pair of Listed events provided the highlights at Compiegne yesterday afternoon, when the weather was rather dreich and the ground very soft. The main event was the Prix de la Gascogne, a chase for five-year-olds and older run over 4500m, which went the way of the Poliglote gelding Roi Mage.

Patiently ridden by Thomas Gueguen, the winner made progress through the field to sit just off the leaders two out, where Arry (Boris De Deauville), another patiently ridden, was sent into the lead from A Mi Manera (Great Pretender). Arry was driven into the last and paid the price, taking a tumbling fall, leaving A Mi Manera, held together by Gaetan Masure, in front. However, the mare had no response to the winner, who took the lead on the run-in and scored by three lengths. The third home, Capferret (Day Flight), was a further three and a half lengths behind.

TAPWRIT TO STAND AT GAINESWAYLast year’s Gr.1 Belmont Stakes hero Tapwrit has been retired and will stand at Gainesway Stud in Kentucky, where his fee will be $12,500.

The son of Tapit, a $1.2m yearling at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Yearling Sale, was bred by My Meadowview LLC and won four of his 13 starts. In addition to his biggest success, he won the Gr.2 Tampa Bay Derby, the Pulpit Stakes and a maiden special weight at the second time of asking as a juvenile.

“We are excited to be standing a Classic-winning son of Tapit,” said Gainesway President Antony Beck. “Physically, Tapwrit is as impressive of a stallion as you will find. He’s going to have beautiful yearlings and make a tremendous sire.”

A half-brother to the Gr.2 Del Mar Derby hero Ride A Comet (Candy Ride), Tapwrit is a son of the Gr.1 Spinaway takes winner Appealing Zophie (Successful Appeal).

APPOINTMENTAUSTRALIA

CHANGES AT INGLISInglis has announced that Sebastian Hutch will join its bloodstock team as General Manager, having spent the past ten years at Coolmore Australia, where he is currently its Sales, Marketing and Racing Manager, as well as being a member of the Coolmore Australia Advisory Board.

As part of the changes, taking effect from 19th November, senior auctioneer Jonathan D’Arcy has been appointed General Manager of Bloodstock Operations and International Development.

The winning six-year-old was tasting victory for the first time since taking the Gr.2 Prix George Courtois last November at Auteuil. In the intervening 11 months, he had been second in a Listed chase at Auteuil, fourth in the Gr.2 Prix Murat, brought down in the Gr.1 Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris and was then third in the Gr.2 Prix des Drags in June.

Bred by Isabelle Garcon and Jean-Pierre Garcon, the €210,000 2017 Arqana February Sale graduate is a half-brother to the Gr.2 Prix Congress runner-up My Way (Martaline) and they are out of the dual-winning Nikos mare Royal Majesty.

RAFFLES SUN COMPLETES POLIGLOTE DOUBLERaffles Sun, bred by Simon Munir and Anna Bromley, completed a double for Poliglote when taking the 3600m Listed Prix Dominique Sartini.

The sole black-type runner in the field of four, the grey filly, who races in the colours of Munir and Issac Souede, was second in the Listed Prix Gerald de Rochefort at Auteuil in June. Yesterday, she made all in the four-year-old only hurdle event. It briefly looked as if she would be challenged by Hot Motive (Motivator) after two out, she picked up well after the last and drew away to a three and a half length win. Third home was Extreme Nouba (Zambezi Sun), also owned by Munir and Souede, a further ten lengths adrift.

The four-time winner is the first foal out of the Munir-raced Gray Steam (Turgeon), who won once in three starts over hurdles. She is a full-sister to the Gr.2 Prix Amadou winner Gray Steel and is a half-sister to the dual Listed hurdle-placed Tropical De Cuta (Kadrou).

UNCLE MO COLT TOPS OPENING SESSIONThe opening session of the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Fall Yearling Sale on Monday was headlined by the sale of an Uncle Mo colt for $200,000, returned receipts of $2,384,700, representing an increase of 13 per cent on the $2,109,200 achieved last year.

The headline act amongst the 103 lots sold was the Northview

Stallion Station offered Uncle Mo colt (Lot 12), which was bought by agent J J Crupi on behalf of Albert Frassetto. The Maryland-bred is a half-brother to the Stakes winner Who’s In Town (Speightstown) and the Stakes-placed Campaign Vows (Broken View). They are out of the Gr.3 (then) Lake George Stakes third Who’s Cozy, a Cozzene daughter of the Gr.2 Jersey Stakes winner Who Did It And Run (Polish Numbers).

Hillwood Stable LLC secured the Pennsylvania-bred Lot 10 for $120,000. A son of Great Notion, the Woodford Thoroughbreds offered colt is a full-brother to the dual Stakes winner Great Soul, out of the unplaced What Am I Gonna Do (Partner’s Hero).

Trainer John Servis picked up the sessions highest-priced filly, Lot 38, for $110,000. Bred in Kentucky, the daughter of Malibu Moon, who is a daughter of the unraced Not For Love mare Apple Pie Baby, was offered by Candyland.

The other six-figure lot was a daughter of Declaration Of War, bought for $102,000 by Owls Bloodstock. Offered near the end of the evening as Lot 144 by Blake-Albina Thoroughbreds LLC, she was bred out of the unplaced Empire Maker mare Entwine, whose two-year-old daughter Qabala (Scat Daddy) scored on debut for Roger Varian at Newmarket last Saturday. Entwine, a half-sister to the Gr.2 Goldikova Stakes winner Filimbi (Mizzen Mast) and to the dam of the Gr.1 Ashland Stakes winner Weep No More, is out of the Gr.1 Kentucky Oaks and Gr.1 Alabama Stakes winner Flute (Seattle Slew).

While the average of $23,152 was down 11 points from $26,040 achieved last year and the median remained the same at $15,000, the clearance rate improved markedly from 63 per cent to 80 per cent.

ScandinaviaTHUNDERING BLUE TAKES STOCKHOLM CUPFor the first time it was possible to fly horses from the UK to Sweden for the Stockholm Cup day at Bro Park in the Swedish capital on 23rd September. Consequently, the race day attracted plenty of international interest.

Thundering Blue (Exchange Rate), who won the Gr.2 York Stakes in July before finishing third in the Gr.1 Juddmonte International, had the highest profile entry in the main event, the 2400m Gr.3 Stockholm Cup International. With an official mark of 119, the grey gelding became the highest-rated horse ever to race in Sweden.

He had become the fans’ favourite even before stepping off the plane at Arlanda and received strong ovations from the crowd when crossing the line in front [pictured right]. The team, which apart from the four-legged hero, also consists of trainer David Menuisier, owner Clive Washbourn and jockey Fran Berry, is now set for the Gr.1 Canadian International in a couple of weeks.

A RACE NOT TO BE UNDERESTIMATEDTrainer Sascha Smrczeck was responsible for Wonnemond’s success in the Listed Tattersalls Nickes Minneslöpning on the same day. The five-year-old son of Areion had been placed in Group company in both Germany and Turkey, but this was his first foreign victory.

The 1600m race was the only dirt contest during the marathon 11-race card, which probably can be regarded as the highest quality race day in Sweden ever. It was one of four black-type races on the day and did not get as much publicity as the main event, but it is a race that should not be underestimated.

As one of the best races run on a sand-based track in Europe, it could be used as a preparation for bigger targets in, for example, America. With the Breeders’ Cup about five weeks away from the race, the timing is ideal for an above-average winner to cross the Atlantic and compete in, for example, the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile.

HAPPY RETIREMENT HURRICANE REDThis Scandinavian page has been featured monthly in EBN for a little over two years now and Scandinavian racing star Hurricane Red has been mentioned in almost every issue. Readers of this page can now expect a bit of a paradigm shift, as it was recently announced that the eight-year-old entire has been retired. In 43 starts, the son of Hurricane Run has won 18 times and accumulated more than €760,000.

His equally famous half-sister Icecapada (Mastercraftsman) has made headlines in this column almost as often and it is rumoured that she is also likely to retire at the end of the season. A winner of 12 races, including four Listed events and placed fourth in the Gr.2 Balanchine at Meydan twice, the six-year-old mare should attract plenty of interest among those looking for a broodmare prospect.

SCANDINAVIAN OPEN YEARLING SALEAround 75 yearlings went through the ring during the Scandinavian Open Yearling Sale in Denmark on 14th September. The hammer fell at DKK575,000 (€77,000) for the top lot, a bay colt by Wilshire Boulevard (Lot 57). Trainer Marc Stott signed the docket on behalf of Karin Salling.

The yearling was bred and raised by the Elsass family at York Stutteri and comes from the first crop of the Gr.3 Anglesey Stakes winner Wilshire Boulevard (Holy Roman Emperor). In training with Aidan O’Brien at two, he also finished second in the Gr.2 Gimcrack Stakes by a neck and was fourth in the Gr.1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere, before joining Danish trainer Flemming Velin. As a three-quarters-brother to Zoffany (Dansili) and a half-brother to Gr.1 Irish Derby runner-up Rostropovich (Frankel), he is a welcome addition to the Scandinavian stallion roster.

The Stockholm Yearling Sale was held the following week and saw a new Swedish sales record, when a colt by Appel Au Maitre changed hands for SEK600,000 (€58,000).

FOUR OUT OF FIVE FOR SMART BREEZE-UP GRADUATENorwegian trainer Cathrine Erichsen has been mentioned on this page before, but she does not get as much publicity as she deserves. She has got just over 20 horses in training, but it is a pretty good bunch. The Swedish-bred three-year-old Master Bloom (Pastorius) was the impressive winner of the Dansk Derby in August and has knocked up five consecutive wins this season. On his most recent start, he landed the St Leger on his home track in Oslo, which was a third straight St Leger victory for the trainer.

Another interesting Erichsen trainee to keep an eye out for is Duca Di Como (Clodovil), whose record reads four wins from five career runs. The three-year-olds only defeat came in the Norsk Derby, which proved to be too far for the fiery gelding, but the €46,000 Goresbridge Breeze-Up graduate bounced back with a victory over 1400m last week and looks like a horse to follow ahead of next season. polytrack at Kempton Park in the evening and did so much more decisively, disposing of another winner by over four lengths after being held up. He looks to be improving and might make up into a Stakes horse.

Barristan The Bold (Excelebration) is a worthy two-year-old and, after winning a nursery on his fifth start, following three places from his first four runs, he then came fourth before winning an ordinary novice at Chester on good to soft on Saturday, overcoming a wide draw and getting home by three lengths. He has the scope to make a good handicapper next year and is unlikely to run again this season.

Fastman (Elzaam) won on his debut in May and then had quite a break before coming second in a novice at York on his return to action. Twenty days later he got up close home in an EBF novice over 6f on good ground at Ripon on Saturday with a four-pound penalty and he could perhaps survive something of a rise in grade.

Cap Francais (Frankel) was favourite to follow up a win on his second start in an EBF novice over a mile on good to soft ground at Haydock Park on Saturday and, indifferent to ground by the look of it, excepting extremes, he can go on to better things. The Listed Silver Tankard at Pontefract, often not the strongest for the grade, might be on the agenda, or he will be left for next year.

The three-year-old and up conditions race over 7f at Chelmsford on Saturday evening was a hot contest on ratings, with five of the six, four of them older horses, rated at least 103, though a couple had not run for a while. Four-year-old Straight Right (Siyouni), gelded and off the track since winning a handicap at Newcastle in February, was a Listed winner early last year and had the odd Group place to his name too, but largely struggled after coming to Britain following his purchase at the Goffs Kensington Sale. This was a solid performance and he clearly likes artificial surfaces, so he could be one for the Dubai Carnival.

It is a bit daft that a novice event should be won by a six-year-old, but the following event went to the useful hurdler Verdana Blue (Getaway), who warmed up for his season by seeing off four three-year-olds by nearly four lengths. Well, one presumes this was a warm up, but she looked as if she could quite useful on the level on the evidence of this first run on the Flat.

Only three turned out for a juvenile conditions event over an extended mile on good ground at Epsom, but it was a decent trio, with the two with ratings on marks of 100 and 99. Hardly for the first time here, a Mark Johnston inmate made all and the order did not change throughout. The odds-on Persian Moon (Makfi) was not really taken on at all and he scored by just under two lengths. He won two novices and finished third in the Gr.3 Acomb Stakes before managing only fourth in the Listed Ascendant Stakes. On the face of it, he will not be easy to place and is a very decent handicapper, but he does not have to progress much over the winter to be a Stakes horse next year.

Nate The Great (Nathaniel) also possesses a rating of 100 after a debut win at Carlisle was followed by a second, third (both at Ascot, the first of them the Listed Chesham Stakes) and fifth at Listed level. The last was a disappointment, naturally, but he was given a seemingly simple task in an EBF novice over 9f at Musselburgh on good to firm ground on Sunday. He duly sat behind the leader before landing the odds of 9/1 on comfortably, not having to run to anything like his mark. The gallop was ordinary, but he would get further and looks the type for the Listed Zetland Stakes.

RACING ROUND-UPLISTED AND CONDITIONS RACES

EBF FOUNDATION STAKES, 10F, 3YO+, GOODWOODFour of the six in this were rated over 100 and they had a good battle between them after a modest gallop, with three-year-olds finishing first and third. Gabr (Intello) had been thereabouts in three previous attempts in this grade, but he has not quite fulfilled what looked to be a career on an upward curve. He was in the right place in this race and, though there was a bunch finish, he looked to have a bit up his sleeve. Bolstered by this, he can perhaps become a Group horse now and he should make up into a useful four-year-old.

JOCKEY CLUB ROSE BOWL STAKES, 16F, 3YO+, NEWMARKETRun on good ground, all five runners were rated over 100, but again there was no pace on. Even so, previous form stood up and eight-year-old Nearly Caught (New Approach), who has been in good heart all year and had already won a Listed race, went one better than last year in this contest in style from nine-year-old Sheikhzayedroad (Dubawi), who finds little off the bridle these days, this being his 49th start. Hughie Morrison, on the other hand, feels his old boy is getting ever better and he will now head for winter quarters.

MUHAARAR EBF ROSEMARY STAKES, 8F, 3YO+ F&M, NEWMARKETThis was a very fair race overall on good to firm ground and was run at a good gallop, even though many with the higher marks were eclipsed. Three-year-old Beshaayir (Iffraaj) has worked her way up to a rating of 97 and, though held in two previous Listed races, she looks to be improving still possibly and she might be useful next year in fillies’ and mares’ races, especially as it looks as if she will get further. It seems she is best given time in a race to come off a good gallop.

MUKHADRAM GODOLPHIN STAKES, 12F, 3YO+, NEWMARKETThe five runners were all of a decent standard and the only three-year-old, marginally well in, was handy all the way and got home by a cosy neck after going on in the dip. Communique (Casamento) has been a busy handicapper this year, with a fourth in a Gr.3 thrown in, but he shows no sign of flagging, winning a decent handicap on his previous start. Mark Johnston might bring him back to Newmarket for the Old Rowley Cup, but he might look for another Stakes race and he will take some stopping in this form.

CONDITIONS RACESThe novice auction over a mile on good ground at Pontefract on Thursday was competitive and a fair event, and Never Do Nothing (Casamento) defied a penalty to become two from three, probably not having to run any better than he had when winning his second start. Monsieur Bond – Spirit Na Heireann (Dubawi) O/B: Helen Steel, T: Richard Fahey £3,000 Goffs UK November Yearling Sale by Richard Fahey, consigned by Norton Grove Stud Distances: 2½l, 1¾l. 9 ran.

Making his seventh start, Firewater (Monsieur Bond) was always to the fore and, having struck for home two furlongs out, he kept on strongly to defeat Ugo Gregory (Gregorian) comfortably. The winner is a half-brother to a winner by Mayson, out of the Dubawi mare Spirit Na Heireann, a half-sister to the owner’s fine racemare Barefoot Lady (Footstepsinthesand), a three-time Stakes winner, including in the Gr.2 Canadian Stakes and Gr.3 Nell Gwyn Stakes, as well as to the dam of the Gr.2 Gran Criterium runner-up Bahamas. The second dam is the Listed (then) Woodcote Stakes winner Lady Angharad, a Tenby daughter of the Italian Listed-placed Lavezzola (Salmon Leap). She is also dam of the Listed runner-up Le Badie (Spectrum; dam of the Gr.2 Lonsdale Cup winner Montaly).

Spirit Na Heireann has a yearling colt by Mayson (2,500gns Tattersalls December Foal Sale by T Hillman and sold for €10,000 to Friars Lough Stables at last week’s Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale).

Haadhir (Heeraat) has been knocking on the door, with five places in six previous outings, and finally scored here by a narrow margin from Shining (Lethal Force), despite running wide around the turn. He is a half-brother to the dual winner Couldn’t Could She (Sixties Icon) and is the second foal out of Emperatriz (Holy Roman Emperor). Successful twice up to a mile, the mare is one of five winners and seven racing-age foals out of Fairmont (Kingmambo), who is a half-sister to three winners abroad. The third dam, Fiaafy (Gone West), is a placed full-sister to Gr.3 victrix Mythical Girl (grandam of New Zealand Gr.1 winner Vespa) and the fourth dam is a Stakes-winning half-sister to Green Desert.

Emperatriz has a yearling full-sister to Haadhir (bought by BBA Ireland for 6,500gns at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale).

An EBF auction conditions race for two-year-olds over 6f on good ground at Naas was an ordinary event and the odds-on favourite, rated 87, ran poorly, so Cedars Of Lebanon (Dandy Man), safely rated in the mid to upper seventies, was able to make all, though she should be credited with toughness in her visor as she saw off all pursuers. There is a final to what has been a series of Foran Equine races, to which she will presumably go.
