Code West, by Lemon DropKid and a full brother to graded stakes winner Charitable Man, brought$340,000. Charitabledonation sold for $110,000.

In his final two years, enjoyed some of his greatest success in racingwith Quality Road and A Little Warm. In 2010, Quality Road won threeGrade 1 races – the Donn Handicap, Met Mile and Woodward Stakes... He had been one of the favorites for the 2009 Kentucky Derby untila quarter crack prevented him from running in any of the Triple Crownraces ... Quality Road won the ʼ09 Florida Derby in track-record timeand the Fountain of Youth before the injury, then returned in August totake the 6-1/2-furlong Amsterdam at Saratoga, again setting a track

record in the process ... A Little Warm won the 2010 Jim Dandy Stakes(G1) at Saratoga. He came out of a second place finish in thePennsylvania Derby (G2) with an injury that is likely to force hisretirement.

Evans campaigned many stakes winners, including Gygistar, winner ofthe 2002 Riva Ridge, Dwyer and Kingʼs Bishop and two runnings ofthe Westchester Handicap in 2004 and 2005 and Personal Ensignwinner Summer Colony ... Other stakes-winning horses he has bredand raced include Tap Day, Misty Galore, Gold Mover, Dismasted,Catʼs At Home, Christmas Kid, Raging Fever, With Ability, PossibleMate and Minstrella ... While he usually kept his best fillies after racing as broodmares, in1999, Evan went to the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Saleand in an astute purchase, acquired the Strawberry Road (Aus) mareKobla, in foal to Mt. Livermore, for $1,050,000. Kobla, who had beenunsuccessful in two starts at the racetrack, was out of the gradedstakes winning Alydar mare Winglet and a full sister is the 1997champion three-year-old filly Ajina. She would produce one of Evanʼsbest horses, Quality Road.

His 3,000 acre Spring Hill Farm in Virginia was the largest breeding•

Evans horses were all sold at the 2011 Keeneland November sale. The dispersal accounted for 170 purchases for $55,820,000 at thesale, which made it the highest-grossing Thoroughbred dispersal eversold at a North American public auction. Earned his first Breedersʼ Cup victory in the 2010 Dirt Mile with DakotaPhone and also had a runner-up fnish in the Ladiesʼ Classic with BlindLuck, his Kentucky Oaks winner who was voted the Eclipse Award asthe yearʼs top 3-year-old female. Those scores provided him withearnings of $900,000 over the two-day championships. Prior to 2010,Hollendorfer saddled Blind Luck for a third-place finish in the 2009Juvenile Fillies and Hystericalady for second in the 2007 Distaff ...After missing the Breedersʼ Cup in 2011, returned in 2012 with twostarters, his best finish being a sixth in the Classic with Nonios.

Entered racingʼs Hall of Fame in 2011, the only human chosen by thevotersʼ panel that year. He was joined in the induction by sterlingracemares Open Mind, Safely Kept and Sky Beauty. Of his induction,he says: “You know my name goes on the plaque, but there should bea thousand other names on there of people who have contributed to allof this.”

Became just the fourth trainer in history to saddle 6,000 winners onSept. 3, 2011. Fittingly, the victory came at Golden Gate Fields withall-time leading jockey Russell Baze aboard his horse Just Tappin It.Baze and Hollendorfer have combined for more than 2,500 victories intheir Hall of Fame careers.

Blind Luckʼs Kentucky Oaks victory was the third for Hollendorfer,•

leaving him one shy of D. Wayne Lukas and two behind the lateWoody Stephens. His other Oaks winners: Lite Light in 1991 and PikePlace Dancer in ʼ96.

His Kentucky Derby experiences have been snake-bitten. Favorite in1998 Event of the Year fractured a knee the week before, with manyfeeling he could have won. Two years later, Globalize made it to withintwo days of the race before the stable pony kicked him on the wayback to the barn. His finishes have often been marred by what manyobservers have thought were bad rides, a muddy track, or general badluck, but Hollendorfer has never complained. Kentucky Derby finishes:2012 Rousing Sermon 8th; 2009 Chocolate Candy 5th; 2007 BwanaBull 15th; 2006 Cause to Believe 13th; 2003 Eye of the Tiger 5th.

Northern Californiaʼs all-time winning trainer. Won every training title atmajor Bay Area tracks from 1986 to 2008. Has been spending moretime in Southern California in recent years.

Saddled 5,000th winner on Dec. 22, 2007, becoming only the fourthtrainer to reach that milestone.

Love affair with the racetrack began as a teen-ager as he and buddiesbet on races at the long-defunct Acton Park in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, not too far from his hometown of Akron. It blossomed into a full-blowncareer when he went to the San Francsco area to visit friends in hisearly 20s. He talked his way onto the backstretch at Bay Meadows andtalked his way into a job with trainer Jerry Dutton. He continured hisapprenticeship with Jerry Fanning. Of his early training, Hollendorfersays: “I got to work for a couple of good guys. Most of what I do today I

learned from them.” It was while he was working for Fanning atHollywood Park that he met his wife-to-be, Janet, who worked fortrainer Mel Stute.

In his first six years as a trainer, won only 59 races combined, butgradually improved his numbers after that and now regularly winsraces at about a 20 percent clip. Even in those early days, he wasnever discouraged. His take on that time: “I was just happy to be onthe backside and happy to be working. Those were good days for me.”Working hard is one of Hollendorferʼs premier facets. He doesnʼtvacation and he has no hobbies outside the racetrack except readingdetective stories.

First hit the national radar in the late-1980s as King Glorious won the1988 Hollywood Futurity and came back in 1989 to win the Ohio Derbyand Haskell Invitational. Then came his early Oaks winners and suchother stakes winners as Event of the Year, who possibly would havebeen the morning-line favorite for the 1998 Kentucky Derby had it notbeen for an injury that ended his career as a racehorse. Hollendorferranked Event of the Year as his best horse until Heatseeker. Other tophorses heʼs trained include Globalize, also hurt on his way to the 2000Derby, Tuscan Evening, Chocolate Candy, Hystericalady, Blind Luck,Heatseeker and Dakota Phone.

Buys at the sales in the low to mid-range, often with his own money, and then puts partnerships of his various owners together, and retainspart ownership of many horses he trains. Has spent millions on horsesthe last few years, never spending very much on any one individual.

Breeder

Paragon Farms ... Owner(s): Diannah and Brandon Perry

Quick facts about Paragon Farms:

Paragon Farms is the name of the Thoroughbred breeding and sellingoperation of Diannah and Brandon Perry. Paragon offered their firstyearling consignment in the name of their Kentucky-based farm at theFasig-Tipton Saratoga select sale in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. in Aug.2008.

The Perrys bred Commander, by Broken Vow, from the DeputyMinister mare Pout which he acquired privately. He sold Commanderthrough Laneʼs End for $105,000 to Fox Hill Farm at the 2009Keeneland September yearling sale. The gelding now races for NorthAmerican Thoroughbred Horse Company and is trained by TroyTaylor.

The couple previously sold Quarter Horses and partnered along withJohn and Jill Stephens in Vision Sales which concentrated on buyingyearlings and reselling them as two-year-olds. Horses that did notbring sufficient amounts as resales were retained for their VisionRacing division. One of them was Visionaire, who became a Grade 1winner and started in the 2008 Kentucky Derby.

The Perrys opted to consign their own horses as an extension of theirhands-on operation after sending them to other consignors to be soldin previous years. “We do all the work on our farm, from the matings;to foaling the mares out, to raising the young horses, to prepping themfor the sales,” Brandon Perry said in an Aug. 4, 2008 interview in TheBlood-Horse. “Then, for the last three or four days we own them, theyget handed off to someone else to be sold. Itʼs kind of like the oldsaying, you know your own horse better than anyone else. Our intentis to sell our own horses. Weʼre not going to seek out other horses toconsign.”

Diannah (maiden name Ten Broeck) grew up in Palm Valley, Fla. onthe stateʼs northeast coast and riding horses was a key part of heryouth. Her father purchased a Quarter Horse operation in the area inthe early 1980s.

The Perrys met while Brandon was managing his fatherʼs QuarterHorse facility in Ocala, Fla. and they married in 2003.

Commander, who was the first Breedersʼ Cup starter for all hisconnections - trainer, owner and breeder - last year, heads into thisyearʼs Marathon with four wins from his last five outs, including avictory in the Premier Handicap (G3) on Oct. 14 at his home base ofHastings Racecourse in British Columbia. Last year, he vied for thelead in the Marathon while racing four wide and tired to finish ninth.

Owner

North American Thoroughbred Horse Company ... Owner(s): GlenTodd & Patrick Kinsella ... Location: Surrey, British Columbia, Canada.... Web site: www.nathc.ca www.derbybarandgrill.com

Quick facts about North American Thoroughbred Horse Company:

Commander, who was the first Breedersʼ Cup starter for both ownerNorth American Thoroughbred Horse Company and his trainer TroyTaylor last year, heads into this yearʼs Marathon with four wins fromhis last five outs, including a victory in the Premier Handicap (G3) onOct. 14 at his home base of Hastings Racecourse in British Columbia.Last year, he vied for the lead in the Marathon while racing four wideand tired to finish ninth.

For Glen Todd, the North American Thoroughbred Horse Company[which has both solely owned racehorses and syndicated them] is thelatest project to illustrate just how much he loves horse racing. Glenʼshistory in the horse racing game can be traced back to the moment hisparents met at Hastings Park in 1939. “Thereʼs a lot of history of it inmy family,” says Glen, who is best known outside of the Thoroughbredracing circuit as the founder of the annual Canada Cup InternationalWomensʼ Fastpitch tourney at Softball City. He was inducted into theB.C. Sports Hall of Fame in 2008 for his long-time involvement withsoftball.

His favorite childhood pastime was attending races with his father. Anyopportunity he had to be around Thoroughbred horses, and the peoplewho work with them, was considered an education. In 2009, Glen and

Thoroughbred partner, Patrick Kinsella, led Hastings Park Racecourseownerʼs standings with 41 wins. They are on top again in 2012, with 28winners from 78 starters.

Troy Taylor has been the head trainer for North AmericanThoroughbred Horse Company since its inception. “Troy and I havebeen friends for 50 years,” said Glen Todd. “In high school, I didhandicapping and writing about racing for the local newspaper. Troy isthe first person I wrote a story on.”

In 2012, the stable ranked as the leading stakes winning group amongowners in North America by wins [as of late October], with an amazing19 stakes victories for the year. Sixteen of those stakes were blacktype. Among their stakes winners are Evelynʼs Dancer and TaylorSaid, both of whom have four stakes victories last year alone, Devil inDisguise, Glencoe Kid, Caged Mistress, Marketway, and Taylorʼs Deal.

Commander, who took his owners and his then 81-year-old trainer tohis first Breedersʼ Cup at this time last year, had a pair of stakesvictories as well, winning the S. W. Randall Plate H. and the B.C.Premierʼs Handicap (G3),. The victory was the sixth in a row forCommander, a four-year-old gelded son of Broken Vow. Bred inKentucky by Paragon Farms, Commander was a $105,000 graduate ofthe 2009 Keeneland September yearling sale, and was a privatepurchase from trainer Larry Jones in 2011..

In the early days of their relationship “I was training in Hastings, andhe was in Seattle,” said Todd. “We used to swap horses back andforth. Then I had to go to work. Troy became the fulltime trainer around

1980.”

Some of these stakes wins the pair have shared include the PremierʼsChampionship, The Ascot Graduation, The CTHS Sales Stakes, TheVancouver Sun, The Province Jim Coleman, The Delta Colleen, TheMiz Stakes, The Inaugural Handicap, The Ballerina, The NewWestminster, The Edmonton Distaff, The Boeing Stake, The JohnPatrick, The Oregon Derby, The Oregon Oaks and The RichmondDerby Trial.

The stable currently numbers about 60 horses, some in partnership, headquartered at Hastings.

Todd opened the Derby Bar & Grill in Surrey, British Columbia a fewyears ago. The restaurant provides a complete off-track bettingteletheater introducing new people to horse racing. It offers simulcast

horse racing from tracks around North America on dozens of screens, including tabletop versions. Throughout, several automated machinestake bets, as does the mutual teller located at the back of therestaurant. Like a proud father, he has framed photos of his winninghorses lining the hallways outside of the restaurant. The facilityʼs Website (www.derbybarandgrill.com), features twitter feeds and the dayʼsmenu of simulcast racing in addition to the menu of food. Among thosetweeting is jockey Mario Gutierrez, who became an overnightsuperstar in the United States when he piloted Iʼll Have Another to winlast yearʼs Kentucky Derby. Gutierrez rides many of Toddʼs horses andstarted his career at Hastings.

Glen Todd said he purchased Commander for $50,000 from LarryJones in the summer of 2011. “Heʼs a big horse, and he was prettyrank,” he said. They decided to geld him early in 2012, and the newgelding promptly went on a six-race winning streak

Quick facts about Glen Hill Farm:

Lavin purchased the former Greentree Stud property near Ocala, Fla.,in 1966 to create 400-acre Glen Hill Farm. In April 2008, Lavinʼsgrandson, Craig Bernick, took over the reins of Glen Hill, becoming its

president and CEO after working at Alberto-Culver for a time. HapProctor has been running the farm since 1991.

Glen Hill Farm, which captured the 1994 Distaff with One Dreamer, has experienced a resurgence in recent years and 2013 has been noexception. Multiple graded stakes winner Marketing Mix is pointing fora return engagement in the Filly & Mare Turf after being the runner-uplast year. She won the Gamely Handicap (G1) in May on BetfairHollywood Parkʼs turf course and came back to beat the boys in theSunset Handicap (G3) at the same venue in July.

Marketing Mix has been generating some buzz outside of the world ofhorse racing. She, and Glen Hill Farm, were profiled in the Aug. 6edition of Forbes.com and she has been unofficially “adopted” byMarket Share, a marketing analytics company.

In 2013, other stakes winners include homebreds Wishing Gate, winner of the San Clemente (G2) and second in the Del Mar Oaks(G1) and Procurement, who captured the La Puente in April. CustomerBase, 11th in the 2011 Juvenile Fillies Turf, competed in gradedstakes and won the Lucie Manet in July.

In 2012, the farm was been represented by Grade 2 winners MarketingMix and homebred Old Time Hockey. In 2011, the farm campaignedmultiple graded stakes winner Banned. Unfortunately, Banned waseuthanized in Oct. 2011, a week after he underwent surgery to repairfractured sesamoids in his right front ankle. The farm also bred 2011Haskell Invitational (G1) winner Coil.

Glen Hill Farm has bred or raced over 80 other stakes winners, including One Dreamer, Relaunch, Convenience, Top Rung, ConceptWin, Repriced, Rich in Spirit, and Closeout...Rich in Spiritʼs daughter isthe homebred Grade 2 winner Wishing Gate. The next generation ofrunners being produced by Glen Hill includes a 2013 foal byUnbridledʼs Song out of multiple graded stakes winner Closeout, making the filly a sixth generation homebred.

Relaunch is probably the best-remembered horse who raced with theiconic Glen Hill silks. After a distinguished racing career, he went on tobecome a prominent sire. His numerous stakes winners campaignedby Lavin include Potentiality, Carload, Media Plan and One Dreamer, the latter of which won the1994 Breedersʼ Cup Distaff. Coincidentally,Alberto-Culver sponsored the Distaff that year... One Dreamer died inFeb. 2010 at age 22 and is buried at the farm but her legacy lives onthrough her progeny. One Dreamerʼs granddaughter, Broken Dreams, competed in the 2011 Breedersʼ Cup Turf Sprint, finishing 13th.

Relaunch also is the sire of Honour and Glory, With Anticipation, andtop California sire Ceeʼs Tizzy, sire of dual Breedersʼ Cup Classicwinner Tiznow, among others.

Willard Proctor trained for Glen Hill in California, while Proctorʼs sonTom had the Florida and Midwest strings. Tom took over all the GlenHill Farm training duties following his fatherʼs passing in 1998.

Lavin purchased two fillies at the 1967 Saratoga yearling sale and hisfirst stakes winner was Gabby Abby, who won a division of the 1967Indian Maid Handicap at Hawthorne.

Lavin has won awards and honors for his philanthropic, civic, andbusiness endeavors. After Hurricane Katrina hit, the Lavin FamilyFoundation and Alberto-Culver made sizable donations to TulaneUniversity and to hurricane victims.

Lavin is the author of a book entitled “Winners Make It Happen:Reflections of a Self-Made Man.”

During World War II, he served four years of sea duty and participatedin nine invasions. Following military service, he acquired a smallChicago-based regional maker of beauty supplies in 1955 andparlayed it into the Alberto-Culver Company, an international Fortune1000 company that produces and markets well-known consumerbrands in the toiletry, household, and food fields.

Quick facts about Windfields Farm:

The 1,500-acre Windfields ceased to operate as a private farm inOshawa, Ontario, Canada in 2009, after shutting down operations as acommercial venture in 2008. As of Nov. 1, 2008, the stallion stationwas closed and the boarding of mares and other ancillary businesseswere stopped. When announcing the decision on Aug. 20, 2009 toshut down entirely, Judith Taylor Mappin termed it “difficult butinevitable.” The broodmares and weanlings were designated forauction at the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society mixed wintersale and the remaining bloodstock was dispersed at the KeenelandNovember sale. All of the farmʼs remaining equipment was liquidatedat auction on March 6, 2011. Windfieldsʼ Maryland division had alreadybeen sold in 1988 and North Stallion Station and Rowland Farm

occupy its former land.

Pool Play, who is a candidate for the 2013 Marathon and is owned byWill Farish and trained by Mark Casse, is winless in seven starts thisyear through Oct. 13, but the 8-year-old captured the 2011 StephenFoster (G1) in 2011 and the 2012 Hawthorne Gold Cup (G2) prior tohis eighth place finish in last yearʼs Breedersʼ Cup Classic.

The farmʼs 73-year history in racing began on May 1, 1936, when farmfounder E.P. Taylor purchased a gelding named Animessic for $800and he won in Taylorʼs silks later that same day. A successful venturewith several other runners and a breeding program soon followed.

Taylor became the first Canadian member of The Jockey Club in 1953,and received Eclipse Awards as Outstanding Breeder in 1977 and1983. Although Taylor was successful in many areas of theThoroughbred industry, he will be best remembered as the breeder ofNorthern Dancer, Canadaʼs first Kentucky Derby winner and later oneof the most influential sires in Thoroughbred history.Taylor and/orWindfields Farm bred a record 48 champions and 361 stakes winners, including winners of more than 10,000 races and over $84 million.

Windfields was the only farm to breed and sell at auction three EpsomDerby winners – Nijinsky II, The Minstrel and Secreto, all sons ofNorthern Dancer and all successful sires in their own right. Some ofthe top Windfields broodmares were Kamar, La Lorgnette, Smitten,South Ocean and Square Angel. Windfields was North Americaʼsleading breeder in purses won nine times, leading breeder of stakeswinners 13 times, and leading breeder by number of races won 19

times. The farm also was Canadaʼs leading racing stable 15 times, andWindfields-breds captured 21 runnings of Canadaʼs premier event, theQueenʼs Plate.

When Taylor retired in 1980 after being incapacitated by a stroke, hisson Charles took over management of the farm and Windfieldʼs focusshifted toward breeding and selling in the commercial marketplace. Aprominent journalist and author, Charles Taylor quickly became amajor influence in the Thoroughbred industry as the farm produced asteady stream of record-breaking yearling consignments andinternationally acclaimed runners. After Charlesʼ death in 1997, hissister Judith Taylor Mappin and his widow Noreen took the helm of thefamilyʼs beloved farm until its closure in 2009.

Windfields Farm bred six Breedersʼ Cup starters including 2012Classic finisher Pool Play; Flag Down, who ran third in the 1997 Turfand 12th in the 1994 Classic; 1994 Juvenile Fillies11th place finisherHonky Tonk Tune; and 1996 Classic sixth place finisher Tamayaz. Thefarm was the co-owners with Sam-Son Farm of two Breedersʼ Cupstarters – Regal Classic, runner-up in the 1987 Juvenile, and RegalIntention, who finished 10th in the 1989 Sprint. Windfield Farms wasalso the sole owner of Commemorate, who was the runner-up in the

1984 Sprint.

After its closure, the Taylor family partnered with real estatedevelopers to build residential homes on the east side of the property. As part of the downsizing, large portions were sold to the University ofOntario Institute of Technology and Durham College, which erectedparking lots on the southeast corner of the farm. Some of the historicbarns, the grave of Northern Dancer, plus a trillium forest where 15 ofthe famous Windfields horses are buried, have been preserved as acommemorative park. The other horses buried there include ArcherʼsBay, Canadiana, New Providence, South Ocean, Vice Regent, VictoriaPark, and Windfields.

During its heyday, Windfield bred two Eclipse Award winners, DevilʼsBag and Glorious Song, in addition to European chamions Storm Bird,El Gran Senor, Shareef Dancer, Awaasif, Danzatore, and Try My Best.Other major stallions and stakes winners bred at Windfields includeStorm Bird, Nijinsky II, the Minstrel, Vice Regent, Archerʼs Bay, SaintBallado and Northern Taste.

Peter Poole, who had worked at the farm since 1950 and was itsgeneral manager until his retirement, died on May 14, 2010 at the ageof 89.

past 15 years.

Casse had his career-best year in 2012, ranking 7th in earnings inNorth America with earnings of $10,234,707 and 129 wins, includingmany top stakes, to build upon his record-setting success in 2011,when his horses topped $7 million in purses and won 140 races. “Itwas the best year weʼve ever had. Itʼs funny. We thought 2011 waspretty good, but then last year just blew that one away,” said Casse, who ended up ranked in the top five of graded stakes-winning trainers.

Casse had a bevy of promising two-year-old fillies in his barn in 2012,including Spring Venture, who won the Natalma Stakes (G2) atWoodbine on the way to a 13th place finish in the Juvenile Fillies Turf. Her stablemate, John Oxleyʼs Spring in the Air, who closed strongly forsecond in the Natalma and went on to win the Alcibiades (G1), wasfifth in the Juvenile Fillies. In 2011, Northern Passion took the sameroute to the Juvenile Fillies, where she finished seventh. SpringVenture was Casseʼs fourth Natalma winner in seven years.

Casseʼs impressive colt Uncaptured, who was under consideration forthe 2013 Dirt Mile, took the 2012 Clarendon, Vandal, and SwynfordStakes as a juvenile after breaking his maiden at first asking for ownerOxley. Although he skipped the Breedersʼ Cup, Uncaptured was votedas Canadaʼs Horse of the Year and 2-Year-old champion male atyearʼs end. “Heʼs a beautiful moving horse. Heʼs just all class,” saidCasse. Uncaptured won the 2013 Prince of Wales Stakes, the secondleg in Canadaʼs Triple Crown, giving Casse his second straight trophyfrom the race and third overall.

Casse added to a strong 2012 with 3-year-olds winning graded stakes.Oxleyʼs filly Dixie Strike won the Prince of Wales Stakes, the secondjewel in the Canadian Triple Crown, after finishing third against theboys in the first leg, the prestigious Queens Plate. She also won theSelene Stakes (G3) and the Florida Oaks. The operation employs more than 50 people in the UnitedStates and Canada. Casse is the former private trainer and operationsdirector for the massive Mockingbird Farm, which former owner HarryMangurian dispersed in 1999.

In 2011, he won a record 119 races at Woodbine and more pursesthan any other horseman in a single year ($6,670,906) to eclipse themark he set in 2007.

Casse won the 1,000th race of his career on Aug. 9, 2008 whenLaragh won a maiden allowance for juvenile fillies at Woodbine.Through Sept. 25, 2013, he had won 1,592 races in his career.

Donʼt cheatanybody if you want to survive.” ... Says he also learned from watchingother trainers at Churchill Downs, particularly Don Winfrey, GregFoley, Angel Montana and Bernie Flint. “I watched the people [trainers]at the gap, watched what theyʼve done right and what theyʼve donewrong, and taken a little bit of good from all of them,” he said.

Owner

Chad Schumer ... Born: May 6, 1970 in Louisville, Ky. ... Residence:Louisville, Ky. ... Family: Single ... Education: Majored in equinebusiness administration at the University of Louisville. ... Web site:www.schumerbloodstock.com

Quick facts about Chad Schumer:

Worldly is the only horse in training that Schumer owns wholly andwhen the son of 1992 Classic winner A.P. Indy, who also sired 2010Marathon winner Eldaafer, competes in the 2013 Marathon, he will beSchumerʼs first Breedersʼ Cup horse. But it was a twist of fate that theyended up together. “We donʼt typically endeavor to own horses. Thishorse was bought for a client overseas and it was a rush job. Theclient said it was all okay, but after the deal was done, he wasnʼt okaywith it and I was stuck with the horse,” he said. “It was never my planto own him. But as they say, it all worked out for the best and the restis history.”

Schumer gave all the credit for Worldlyʼs turn around to trainerBrendan Walsh. “He has done a spectacular job with him, anabsolutely outstanding job. This horse has flourished in his care,” hesaid. “Brendan is extremely knowledgeable and is an excellenthorseman.” Sean Nix, who works at Schumer Bloodstock, knew Walshthrough a friend of a friend and recommended him for the job. Theymet in April at the Ocala Breeders Sales, where Schumer bought acouple of 2-year-olds for a client, and Worldly was in Walshʼs barn inMay.

Walsh believed that Worldly belonged with top notch runners, butSchumer had to be convinced. The horseʼs strong showing to be thirdbehind reigning Classic champion Fort Larned in the HomecomingClassic Stakes at Churchill Downs last out did the trick. “There werethree Grade 1 winners in that field before Golden Ticket scratched.Youʼve never seen a group of people celebrate so much for coming inthird. That night I said okay; letʼs run in the Marathon,” he said.

Schumer is going to Santa Anita to see his horse compete on FridayʼsBreedersʼ Cup card, but he wonʼt get to enjoy the entire event inperson. “I am leaving California at 6 AM on Saturday morning, hopefully after a long night of celebration,” he said. “I have a lot oforders for the November sale in Kentucky, last year I bought 75 lots, and I cannot lose that Sunday. I have too much responsibility and Ihave to prepare for the sale.”

Schumer got his start in racing from his grandmother, who moved fromNew York to Kentucky and loved to bet the races at Churchill Downs, where she took him every day during the live meets. “I started studyingpedigrees literally when I was five years old. You can imagine that Iwas pretty bored at the track when I was very young and somehow Igot interested in the horses and their bloodlines. Initially, I startedreading Blood-Horse magazine and studying, and by the time I was 14or 15, I was pretty well versed in pedigrees. Out of college, I startedmeeting people and hustled around, and here we are,” he said.

Schumer Bloodstock Agency was formed in 1991 as a full service firmdealing with the international market of buying and sellingThoroughbreds. He and his team assist clients with purchasing

broodmares and s ta l l ion prospects , p inhooking, mat ingrecommendations and insurance ... The agency is an establishedleader in the exportation of horses to Australia, New Zealand, SouthAmerica, Thailand, Europe, Saudi Arabia and Japan. Schumer attendsauctions throughout the world and visits farms and racetracks globallyas well. The agency facilitates shipping and insurance as well to

ensure a smooth transition of bloodstock.

Schumer also owns 10 percent of another horse in training, 20 percentof a couple of yearlings, and one yearling who will race on the WestCoast when they did not bring the prices he wanted at auction.

Trainer

Brendan Walsh ... Born: in Cork County, Ireland in 1973 ... Residence:Louisville, Ky. ... Family: Single.

Quick facts about Brendan Walsh:

Marathon contender Worldly will be the first Breedersʼ Cup starter forWalsh, who has never before run a horse on the world stage or evenin a Grade 1 or Grade 2 race. “When we were kids in Ireland, weʼdwatch the Breedersʼ Cup on TV and think what it would be like to havea horse good enough to be there. I could only imagine that someday Icould have a horse in one of these races,” he said. “Iʼm very excited, especially to have this happening so early in my career. Some peoplego their entire careers and never get this chance. Iʼve had this dreamfor a long time and now itʼs coming true. Iʼm on cloud nine and I keeppinching myself to make sure itʼs real.”

Even though Worldly has yet to run farther than 1-1/4 miles, his traineris high on his horseʼs chances in the 1-3/4 miles test. Wordly is out ofmultiple graded stakes winner Urbane, who was second in the 1995Kentucky Oaks at 1-1/4 miles, and was sired by A.P. Indy, who wonthe 1992 Breedersʼ Cup Classic and the Belmont Stakes at 1-1/2 milesthe same year and also sired 2010 Breedersʼ Cup Marathon winnerEldaafer. “Iʼve only had this horse since May or June when Mr.Schumer bought him from Samantha Siegel. The first time I ran him (inthe Prairie Meadows Handicap) he was second to Golden Ticket. Thenext time out in the race at Remington (Governorʼs Cup Stakes), hewas unlucky and lost to Prayer for Relief on the head bob, and thenthe last time (in the Homecoming Classic Stakes at Churchill Downs)

he was beaten only 3-1/2 lengths by (2012 Breedersʼ Cup Classicwinner) Fort Larned. So heʼs been running against some of the tophorses and after that last race, we had it in the back of our minds thatweʼd run in the Marathon,” Walsh said. “He gives us the impressionthat heʼd like to stay, and heʼs bred to stay. Heʼs the type of horse whowill give himself every chance to win. The Marathon, being so long, isa funny race, so you never know. Worldly is a legitimate horse.”

After completing the course at Irelandʼs jockey school and finishinghigh school, Walsh took the stud management course at Darley andwent to work for Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoumʼs DarleyIrish division at Kildangan.”I spent my winters there breaking babiesand riding racehorses and in the summers Iʼd flip flop and work fortrainer John Hammond in England,” he said. “One winter I went toDubai and worked for Godolphin at the time Tom Albertrani headed upthe training. I ended up spending nine winters in Dubai back in the daywhen they had some very good horses.” ...Walsh traveled with theGodolphin horses to racetracks around the world, and was withDaylaami (1st in the 1991 Breedersʼ Cup Turf), Fantastic Light (1st in2001 Turf and 5th in the 2001 Turf), Street Cry (3rd in the 2000Juvenile) and Dubai Millennium when they came to America to race.

When moving on from Godolphin and Darley, he went to work as theassistant to English up-and-coming trainer Mark Wallace. “We had theEuropean champion sprinter Benbaun. But I knew I wanted to come tothe United States, so I got a job with Eddie Kenneally and was hisassistant for four years. Thatʼs where I got my American experience,”said Walsh. “I went everywhere with Eddieʼs horses and then decidedit was time to go out on my own.” He took out his trainerʼs license in

Page 68: Breeders’ Cup MArATHON (Gr. II) · Cease RAP Racing & David Jacobson David Jacobson B.g.6 War Chant - Limit by Cox's Ridge - Bred in Kentucky by Claiborne Farm & Adele B. Dilschneider

2011 and started one horse, who came in second, that year.

Business began to pick up for Walsh in 2012 as he attracted ownersand saddled 52 horses with four wins, four seconds and eight thirdswith $149,905 in purses. Through Oct. 21, 2013, he had more thandoubled his wins (nine) and almost doubled his earnings ($279,056)from the year before. “Considering Iʼve been on my own for less thantwo years, things are going well. Iʼve been doing really well this year,”said Walsh, who added that having a horse like Worldly in the barn isdoing wonders for him.

Walsh currently trains for seven or eight separate owners and hasbetween 10 to 12 horses in the barn. He also works as his ownexercise rider in the mornings. “Iʼd like to have more horses and amtrying to build it up, but I donʼt want more than a number in the

twenties because I like to be around all of my horses every day andgive each one personalized care,” he said. “Itʼs a big advantage to beable to get on them in the mornings. I rode some really good horses,so I like to think that I can recognize whatʼs going on with them, whentheyʼre right and when theyʼre not right. No matter what level of racetheyʼre in, you only want to run them when theyʼre right. If you can ridethem yourself, it gives you a bit of an edge. I can see and feel a lotmore from the horseʼs back than from the trainerʼs stand.”

Even though he traveled for years with the Godolphin horses to theBreedersʼ Cup and other major events in the world, this time it will bemuch different for Walsh. “Iʼve been around a bunch of BreedersʼCups, Japan Cups and the like, but itʼs very nice to be going for myown gig now,” he said. “This is why I started training. Hopefully, thiswill be the first of many more Breedersʼ Cups to come.
