A cross-border sewer line might have seemed ideal for moving packages of marijuana from Mexico into
the United States, but when the line broke there was no way to keep it secret.
Residents of Morley Avenue in Nogales, Arizona, have had to put up with some pretty foul odors since
Sunday when raw sewage began flowing out of a house. Turns out the smugglers damaged the sewer
line after digging a tunnel to it from under the house.
“It filled the house,” city spokesman John Kissinger told the Nogales International on Monday,
explaining that the line appeared to be “totally blocked” with drugs.

By Tuesday night, authorities had fished out four packages of marijuana
weighing nearly 30 kilograms from the line after sending down a camera.
Oxygen tanks, air hoses, pumps, hammers and drills were found inside
the house, and a hole in the floor leading to the tunnel.
The sewer line is the International Outfall Interceptor, which carries some
38 million liters of sewage a day from Nogales, Sonora, to the U.S.
The cost of clearing the blockage and repairing the line will require digging up Morley Avenue, and
could finish up costing millions of dollars, Kissinger said.
No one was in the house when authorities arrived to investigate.
It is not the first time the sewer line has been employed for drug smuggling. Several bales of marijuana
were found inside the line in 2009, while the drug has also been discovered on two separate occasions
in the city’s sewer lines.
