ACADEMIC OVERVIEW "Brazil: Experiencing Culture Through Design" is designed to expose students to a global perspective through cultural experiences and discipline-specific training. Students will interact with the people, learn the history and delve into the culture of Rio de Janeiro and surrounding areas through academic instruction, guest lecturers, excursions and daily activities. These experiences will be the research catalyst to develop polished graphic design projects using industry standard software and technology. The extension of the classroom environment into the Brazilian cultural community provides a unique research laboratory that significantly enhances project innovation. Upon completion of the program, students will have a body of work that represents their global experience and newly acquired technical knowledge.

ABOUT THE CITY Rio de Janeiro ("January River") is the capital city of the State of Rio de Janeiro, the second largest city of Brazil, and the third largest metropolitan area in South America. Rio is nicknamed the Cidade Maravilhosa or "Marvelous City" thanks to its dynamic urban vibe, expansive beaches, abutting rain forest and sprawling favelas. As the one time capital of Brazil, and only European capital outside of Europe under the Portuguese royal family, Rio has a very rich African history. The Portuguese imported African slaves by the hundreds of thousands into Rio de Janeiro and to this day, many of the things the city is known for are because of the African culture imported through bondage. Rio is the most visited city in the southern hemisphere and is known for its natural setting, Carnival celebrations, samba, Bossa Nova, and renowned beaches such as Copacabana and 1panema. Rio's iconic landmarks include the giant statue of Christ the Redeemer atop Corcovado Mountain, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, and Sugarloaf Mountain, a granite peak with cable cars to its summit to name a few. Rio is home to many universities, and the second largest center of research and development in Brazil.
