Gibraltar has a lot going in its favour; beautiful weather, stunning scenery, a unique culture, location, history and last but by no means least, our infamous apes!

These are just a few of the qualities that attract visitors to the Rock year after year, and whilst we do live in an enviable part of the world, the recent global crisis has shown that tourism and stunning vistas alone are insufficient to sustain an economy in these turbulent times.

Just look at Spain and you will understand my point. It is also superbly located with an idyllic lifestyle, weather and countryside, but that is where the parallels between the two end, because unlike Spain, Gibraltar has a flourishing and respected finance centre that has underpinned our economy and played a vital role in the Rock continuing to instil confidence and attract further international investment in to our property market.

The recent budget announcement in England which introduced an additional higher rate of 50 per cent for taxable income above £150,000 together with basic personal income tax allowances gradually being reduced to nil for individuals with “adjusted net incomes” above £100,000 from 2010 has also served to spur further interest in Gibraltar as a greater number of high earner’s seek to reduce the tax they currently pay by escaping the UK taxman’s clutches.

As Gibraltar’s reputation grows one can all too easily see why companies and wealthy individuals are more than happy to leave their country of origin and relocate here and benefit from large tax savings, such as Cat 2 status, whereby tax is only payable on the first £70,000 of taxable income and the maximum annual tax liability is £25,880.

With interest rates also at an all time low it is also understandable why those that can, are choosing to invest in the local property market. As 2009 has progressed we have steadily seen the volume of sales and rentals increase, and during the course of next year I expect to see price increases in certain section of the local residential market.

I am extremely confident in Gibraltar’s future and whilst this year or next may not be the boom we have witnessed in past years, homeowners who have invested in good locations will continue to reap the benefits with healthy rental returns and sustained capital appreciation far in excess of the interest they receive on their savings in the bank.
