Mr. Garasi is the Music Director and Principal Conductor of the professional, Florida Lakes Symphony Orchestra in Central Florida. Under maestro Garasi’s baton, the FLSO has become a significant profile in the Central Florida community. His creative contributions to the regular FLSO concert season include: side-by-side performances with local youth orchestras and college students in the area, the development of the FLSO Chamber Music Series and Meet the Musician Series, the formation of the annual Concerto/Aria Competition for Young Artists, and the programming of premiere works by local composers.

A committed advocate for the performance of new music, Mr. Garasi was invited and conducted the premiere season of the professional New Score Chamber Orchestra in Orlando, Florida, performing the music of living composers of our day. Mr. Garasi was also a part of the 1st “Young Composers Challenge” annual event, sponsored by the Orlando Philharmonic. At the School of Performing Arts at the University of Central Florida, Mr. Garasi performed on piano in Steve Reich’s “Music for 18 Musicians”, was the Advisor for the formation of NewME (New Music Ensemble), which provided student composers and performers an opportunity to compose/perform contemporary art music, and implemented the UCF Annual Composition Competition.

Mr. Garasi has had the privilege of conducting such outstanding artists as Harpist Elizabeth Hainen; Trumpeter Philip Smith, Cuban guitarist Carlos Molina; mezzo-soprano Rachelle Fleming, (sister to world-renowned soprano, Rene Fleming), and bass baritone Michael Riley.

Acclaimed as one of the most formidable and reputable conductors in the world of Brass Bands, Mr. Garasi is known for his dynamic presence and leadership, both in preparation and performance. Charismatic, trend-setting, progressive and creative, Mr. Garasi was the musical director of the Brass Band of Central Florida for nine years, leading them to win both major titles in US brass banding, two tours to England, recording four albums and leading the ensemble to a new level of national and international prominence. Mr. Garasi became the first American brass band conductor ever to be nominated by England’s 4 Bars Rest.com for the “Newcomer of the Year” Award in 2004 and the “Conductor of the Year” award in 2006. Mr. Garasi also won the “Best New Arrangement” Award in the U.S. Open Brass Band Championships in 2004 and 2005. In 2007, Mr. Garasi became the first American conductor to adjudicate at the most prestigious entertainment competition for brass bands in the world, the Brass in Concert Competition at the Sage in Gateshead, England. Because of this international success, Mr. Garasi was invited to England twice to conduct the world famous Grimethorpe Colliery Band on numerous concerts and at the Brass in Concert Competition in 2008. Still active in the world of Brass Bands, Mr. Garasi was recently invited to adjudicate at the North American Brass Band Championships in 2013, and is presently on the NABBA Board of Directors.

Mr. Garasi studied at the Eastman School of Music and holds a bachelor and master degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music. In addition to his formal degrees, Mr. Garasi has studied advanced conducting with Kenneth Kiesler, Michael Jinbo, and Joseph Kreines.

Ratajczak, who was one of the most sought-after percussionists, performed and recorded with a wide variety of artists as well as many Tony award winning Broadway shows and film soundtracks. His credits included the shows City of Angels, Crazy for You, Wonderful Town, Sweet Charity, Titanic, The Music Man and Mary Poppins. A graduate of the famed Eastman School of Music, Ratajczak also worked with jazz and pop artists Woody Herman, Gerry Mulligan, John Fedchock, Audra McDonald and Debby Boone. He recorded many TV and radio jingles and played the soundtracks to films such as Dead Man Walking, Miller’s Crossing, The Pelican Brief and Brighton Beach Memoirs.

According to Jim Gray, co-founder and director of the BBBC, Ratajczak joined the band in 1997 when arranger Mark Freeh recommended him for his up-tempo swing version of Old Man River piece he’d done for the band that featured the drum set at various times.

“I liked this piece and wanted (the BBBC) to perform it as I thought the audience would like it. Only problem was, we didn’t have a drum set player that had the chops to do it,” Gray explained.

After discussing his concern with Freeh, Ratajczak was soon on a plane from New York to play the piece with the band.

And the rest, as they say, is history.

David Ratajczak

Ratajczak played a huge part in the BBBC’s beginning. Freeh went on to arrange Sing, Sing, Sing for the BBBC with David in mind. This arrangement ended up being an audience favorite.

“David had the unique ability to be a fantastic drum set player and yet also be able to perform on ‘concert percussion.’ Those types are hard to find,” Gray added, fondly.

One of Ratajczak’s career highlights was recreating the role of jazz drumming great Gene Krupa with Bob Wilbur’s orchestra in a Carnegie Hall performance celebrating the 50th anniversary of Benny Goodman’s historic 1938 concert.

During his tenure with the BBBC, Ratajczak was featured in many pieces including Sing, Sing, Sing, Cute, Old Man River, St. Louis Blues, South Rampart Street Parade and more.

On June 1, 2013, the BBBC debuted the BBBC Youth Brass Band. A committee of community stakeholders, music educators from all over the state of Michigan and several BBBC musicians worked on this initiative. This band was an inclusive group, did not require an audition, and had no fee to participate. Over 100 youth from all over the state of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Virginia registered to participate in this event. This ensemble gave youth in ninth through twelfth grade an opportunity to study with Major Dwayne Milburn (Deputy Commander of the US Army Field Band), attend leadership skill building sessions with leadership clinician Fran Kick (www.kickinit.com), participate in group lessons with and play beside world-class brass and percussion musicians. Students were able to network with each other, BBBC musicians and build friendships that will last a lifetime. This year’s youth brass band day was held in conjunction with the summer concert. Check out www.bbbc.net in early 2016 for registration information.

"My son, Ryan, enjoyed the day and was excited to play with the band as well as see the band perform. He actually posted a story to your facebook page this weekend about how this experience inspired him"

"It was such a great experience-from meeting new horn playing friends to working with Professor Bontrager."

"It was an experience that my son will never forget. He is hoping that he can be a part of it again in the future."
