The Jan. 27 Town Hall meeting, hosted by BCA Staff at The Brandermill Church, was well received. About 50 residents came out to enjoy the coffee, bagels and actual face time with staff, a few board members and several committee members. Questions, concerns and discussion followed and flowed throughout the late morning and into the afternoon. Multiple topics were discussed:

This is a volunteer opportunity for residential or commercial members of Brandermill. Interested candidates need to be members in good standing and be available to attend monthly board meet-ings, serve as a board liaison to a committee, and donate time to the board as needed.
The terms of President Charlie Davis and Director Bob Friedel will end in April, rendering two available seats for this election. If you are in-terested in knowing more and would like to attend an informative meeting, email General Manager Cynthia Wright at [email protected]. Board of Directors Special Meeting This special meeting called by Board Directors Greg Pearson and Ann Hunt to discuss the buffer modification policy was held on Monday, January 22 at 7 p.m. at the Harbour Pointe Clubhouse. The meeting was well attended by residents with standing room only. Member Voice brought questions and concerns from the residents and a discussion followed by board members in attendance. At the end of the evening the Board of Directors agreed that, moving forward, the BCA would enforce the current Shoreline Buffer Modification Policy (scroll to bottom of page.) Details to follow in future communications.

BCA Scholarship Program applications deadline is Mar. 2
The Brandermill Community Association (BCA) awards a student scholarship to be used towards a 2 or 4-year institute of higher learning. Individual must be a graduating senior, reside in Brandermill and meet scholarship criteria. The scholarship awards up to $1000 is approved by the Board of Directors and included in the annual budget.
The scholarship program is a community partnership between the BCA and the Chesterfield County school system through the “Design for Excellence” initiative. “Design for Excellence” is structured to em-phasize student volunteerism and community involvement as a part of student graduation requirements. The scholarship program in its 4th year is available to students enrolled in a homeschool program, private school or public high school.
The deadline for submitting scholarship criteria is on March 2 at 2 p.m. Students may complete the Scholarship Program Application and return it to the BCA office located at 3001 E. Boundary Terrace, Midlothian, VA 23112— to the attention of Donna Allen or Clover Hill High School Counselor Alyson Rizzuti.

Kathy schoening wears many hats at the BCA as an accounting specialist, maintenance coordinator and notary.
Kathy Schoening assumes a new role at the Brandermill Community Association and will manage accounts receivables and payables, as well as the maintenance work order system. When a resident calls to report a situation, the work order is directed to the maintenance staff to complete the work and then a follow-up phone call is made by Schoening. She will also provide free notary services to residents; appointments are requested. Schoening is the staff liaison to the Community Appearance and Mainte-nance Committee (CAM).
The Brandermill Community Association can take in more than 800 checks per week and make $50,000- $60,000 in deposits every other day during a quarterly payment period. Schoening knows only too well what this workload looks like and the time needed to manage it well.
Schoening credits 15 years working at car dealerships managing ac-counts receivables, accounts payable, title work and collections as prepara-tion for the absolute attention to detail necessary to handle the work at the BCA. She falls back on her Capital One training in collections to remember how important it is to be helpful and kind.
Schoening started as a part-time employee at the BCA in January 2015 working in accounts receivables and collections; she went full-time in September 2017 as additional duties were added. She likes working along-

Brandermill birders, students and families will gather on Saturday, February 17 at 8 a.m. at the Sunday Park Pavilion for the 5th Annual Great Back-yard Bird Count. Participants will take a guided walk with Swift Creek Middle School science teach-er and avid birder Darlene Stigall to identify and count birds for the Cornell University Backyard Bird Count. Learn about winter birds, what they eat and how to prepare backyards for springtime visitors. But, why count the birds?
Launched in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, the Great Backyard Bird Count was the first online citizen-science project to collect data on wild birds and to display results

• The best way to evaluate your property is to stand at the curb and look at the overall presentation: mailbox, drive-way, windows, paint condition, roof stains, mold/rot, mis-cellaneous items, condition of basketball hoops and play equipment, lawn maintenance needs, leaf accumulation, bare spots, trash, gutters, etc.
• Be sure your HVAC unit, propane tank, and trash cans are properly screened. Curbside trash service is not permit-ted in Brandermill.
• Sweep back gravel that has washed into the street and/or add gravel to worn, rutted areas of the driveway (use same size and color). Eradicate mold and weeds as necessary. Repair damaged timbers. Straighten any edging materials. Fill cracks in asphalt.
• Evaluate trees and bushes for springtime spruce up. Trim trees, bushes. Remove dead plants and empty planting containers. Mulch planting beds (2 inches deep minimum).
• Remove or store all miscellaneous items that may have accumulated on your property—including behind the property, shed (if applicable), garage, and/or deck.
• Roofs that are stained or discolored must be cleaned; this includes garage and shed roofs.
• Remove or store boats, trailers, RVs, campers, canoes, kayaks, ATVs.
• Neaten firewood stacks that may have become disorga-nized. Store behind the rear plane of the house.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is respon-sible for building, maintaining, and operating roads to include the roads in Brandermill.
VDOT repairs potholes; deals with road drainage situations; re-places and repairs signs, signals and guardrails; picks up dead critters and trims trees. VDOT crews are
responsible for snow plowing and treating the roads in Brandermill.

The Brander-mill Region Men’s Club is proud to announce that the guest speaker for the March 1 meet-ing will be histori-an and author Mary Miley Theobald. Mary, author of the wonderful new Brandermill history book, will speak on “Brandermill: The History and the Book.”
Theobald is a historian and writer. She received her B.A. and M.A. from the College of William and Mary, worked for Colonial Williamsburg, and taught American history and museum studies at Virginia Commonwealth University
for many years. She has written 14 nonfiction books and more than 200 articles for a variety of maga-zines and newspapers, plus five historical novels. In 2012, Mary won a national competition for Best First Crime Novel with the first of her Roaring Twenties murder mysteries, The Imper-sonator. The fourth in that series came out in August, and a Hollywood producer has optioned the story for a television series. For fun, she is helping start up a winery near Charlottesville, where everything she does would have been illegal during the 1920s.
The Brandermill Region Men’s Club consists of approximately 150 members who have chosen to make their homes in and around the communities surrounding Brandermill and Woodlake. FEED23112 is located in the parking lot at Clover Hill High School. The pantry is open on the first and third Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to noon. Food donations may be dropped off dur-ing this time.

Don’t be fooled by unscrupulous contractors. Residents who are planning spring home improvement projects are reminded that you should know the people that you employ for all home repaisr and yard work. Be wary of people that just “show up” and offer to do yard work or home repairs. They may offer cheaper prices but will often perform a less than stellar job. The Brandermill Community Association (BCA) is recruiting for a Seasonal Pool Manager.
The position will oversee the operation of the 3 pools located within the footprint of the Brandermill Community Association.
The successful candidate will have general knowledge of pool operations, be familiar with hiring practices and supervisory tech-niques, and be able to set up work/staffing schedules that conform to the hours of pool operation. Must be familiar with all rules as they may apply to employees (Labor Laws).
Finally, the successful candidate must be an excellent com-municator and be able to interact with many diverse individuals throughout the summer. This is a seasonal position in that the expected employment dates run from April 15 through Labor Day.
The pool manager will report directly to the General Manager for the Brandermill Community Association.

Plans are underway for our first ever Brandermill Spring Cleaning event! BCA is busy planning a paper shredding station, medication take-back with
County representatives on hand to facilitate, dumpsters for large items, technology and hard drive disposal, hazardous materials disposal station, and metal collection. Other plans in the works include donations for
Feed 23112, a local dog rescue, CARITAS and Buy Nothing. We wanted to give you a heads up for starting 2018 off right.
