Hello and welcome to our brand new RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield and Bradford branch magazine! ...You may have noticed we have a slight name change, as we recently took over the Bradford district in January this year. So in keeping with our new name, we decided to create a new magazine too! We’ve combined our newsletter and information booklet to create this handy all-in-one for our supporters to read and enjoy. We’ve packed this issue with lots of fun animal stories, pictures, a pull-out event poster, useful information for pet owners, contact details and lots more. So we really hope you enjoy it and we welcome any feedback you may have too, so please get in touch if you have any comments or enquiries. Lastly, we’d just like to say a huge thank you to all of our readers for your continued support in helping us to care for so many local animals in need, we simply couldn’t maintain the animal welfare work we do without you!

About our branchWelcome to the RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield, Bradford & District Branch, we are a self-funding branch of the RSPCA responsible for raising money locally to support our animal welfare work. Our main aim is to rehabilitate unwanted, abandoned and abused animals and find them loving, permanent homes. We rely on public donations and the generosity of our local community to keep the doors of our animal centre open.

The RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield, Bradford & District Branch is a local charity supporting animal welfare in Calderdale, Kirklees & Bradford. We support the National RSPCA Inspectorate by housing, rehabilitating and rehoming the local animals in our area that have been subjected to cruelty.

Our Animal Centre is professionally managed by people passionate about animals and their welfare. The Centre provides safety for the many animals that are unwanted or cruelly treated. Our main role is as a rehoming centre and we are also a centre of excellence for the rehoming of elderly cats and dogs. All of the animals we accept are abused, ill treated or sick and injured. They come to our centre via our Inspectors, including dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, hamsters, ferrets, various wildlife and small livestock.

Our vet examines every animal that we accept and our aim is to rehome healthy animals into

permanent loving homes. The staff are qualified to NVQ Level 2, National Diploma or RSPCA standard procedures and therefore are not only competent, but also completely dedicated to animal welfare. We assist the Inspectorate with cruelty case animals and nurse many of them back to good health. We provide welfare assistance to those on benefits by providing low cost neutering and micro-chipping.

Our professional team is always on hand to offer friendly advice. We also have a commitment to local authorities and offer further education work experience placements to college students. We pride ourselves on the level of care that we offer to our dogs. Each dog is walked and trained daily and has the opportunity to take part in agility. All animals are individually assessed so that we can match them to the most suitable homes. The cattery is bright and welcoming and some of the cats even have their own televisions to help keep boredom at bay!

We also have public speakers who will attend various functions to help inform people about the work of the branch. All of our centre’s activities are funded by local donations, our own fundraising events and our network of charity shops.

We also rely on support from our many dedicated volunteers, who help at our Animal Centre, Charity Shops and support our fundraising activities.

Kenley

Our handsome boy Kenley had a bit of a rocky start to finding his forever home, after spending 6 months in one RSPCA Centre with no viewings or interest he was transferred to our Animal Centre where he became a firm favourite with staff and volunteers.

Kenley was a regular helper at our events and collections – he was the poster boy for all the animals in our Centre! He had a few people call up about him but none that followed up after the first enquiry. A few months passed and then Kenley’s luck changed when a lovely couple came to view him and instantly fell in love! He now lives with his new family in a pub where he gets lots of fuss and love. We’re so happy Kenley finally got his happy ending!

Jess

The beautiful Jess came into our Animal Centre as a stray so we didn’t have a lot of history on her, but her personality shone through as she waited for her forever home! Jess is a very loving and playful cat and one of the reasons her new family picked her was for her love of sitting on your shoulder and purring! Such a quirky girl!

Bella

Can you believe Bella was a very nervous girl when she was brought into our centre? Look at her now! She has come on leaps and bounds since being adopted by Sharron Cook and her partner.

Bradley

Here’s Bradley who was brought into our centre with 5 of his litter mates after they had been abandoned in a car. Luckily they were found in time and Bradley has since been adopted by Jenny and Alan Owen who are very pleased to have him as part of the family!

Our Dogs’ Day Out Scheme enables our supporters to enjoy a dog without full-time commitment and provides the Centre with valuable feedback to help us find our dog the best home.

How does the scheme work?

Many people love dogs but due to their personal circumstances are unable to commit to owning one. The Dogs’ Day Out Scheme allows you to take a dog into your home for the day at a time that suits you.

• You will be doing an invaluable job as you will be able to provide the Centre with the information about the dog in a home environment.

• On receipt of your application form we will visit your home and complete a questionnaire.

• You will then be invited to a short training session with our Dog Training and Behaviour Advisor.

• Dogs that are available for a day out will feature on our website. Once you have successfully joined our team you will be able to reserve a dog to take out.

• It is important that the dogs keep to a routine. Dogs can be collected after 9.00am and must be returned by 4.00pm in time for their tea.

Our wonderful EARS DogsWe adopted our first EARS (Elderly Animal Rehoming Scheme) dog in 2005, she was a 16 year old EARS dog called Sally. We heard about EARS from my parents who were fostering an EARS dog at the time. We had previously just had cockatiels and a parrot as family pets but really fancied the idea of adding a dog to the Barratt family, if he or she would get on with our flighted friends. Luckily Sally did and we were the lucky new “parents” for two years until at the grand old age of 18 when sadly she passed away.

We were all deeply upset and missed her dearly, so it wasn’t long before we adopted Lucky as the house wasn’t the same without a dog - even with having two young children, a dog seems to make a family complete. Lucky was 11 years old and came with a few issues as he wouldn’t wee or poo outside. No matter how long we walked him, he always did it when we got back! Eventually after advice from the Animal Centre and perseverance, we succeeded or should I say Lucky did! Anybody watching us on walks would have thought we were crazy for praising an 11 year old dog for weeing and pooing like he was a puppy, but we were so pleased with ourselves and him!

Lucky also had developed a few medical problems, but we loved and looked after him until at the age of 14 he also passed away. Again we were all extremely upset as all pet owners know, it doesn’t get any easier.

We then adopted Jazz only a week later as I couldn’t cope with a dogless house! She was 10 so the youngest of the dogs we had adopted but she was also the biggest! She came with no immediate problems apart from a mammary tumour when she was 15 which we had removed at the vets with no issue. We had Jazz for another two years and with absolute heartbreak we had to let her go at the grand old age of 17 when her back end went. She had been an extra special dog who wouldn’t leave my bedside when I was ill after my dad passed away unexpectedly, so I think it was even harder this time. They are all special and help in their own different ways, but she had a special place in my heart and I still cry when I think about her today - she is greatly missed! We had Jazz for 7 years and some people don’t have dogs from puppies for that long, so we were very lucky!

Again, we couldn’t cope with a life without a dog, so we adopted quite soon after as we feel it helps with our grief to have a new dog to look after. We actually took Bruce on the ‘Dog’s Day Out Scheme’ after Keith saw him in one of the offices at the Animal Centre. We ended up fostering him for a week and then adopted him a week later after falling for him! He had been at the RSPCA for over 6 months and had been overlooked, although he was a favourite with all the staff! We like to think he had been waiting for us and he has helped us as much as we have helped him.

He is therefore our 4th EARS dog and is spoilt rotten and loved to bits by us and everyone who meets him! He is 11 now and we’ve had him nearly nine months. We know that with some EARS dogs you may have some medical problems and Bruce does - just like the others - but the love and affection you get from these dogs by giving them their forever homes outweighs the fact you don’t normally have them for as long as you would with a younger dog.

Although It is heart breaking to go through losing them, we feel the EARS scheme is an excellent one and would recommend it to anyone! We also feel you always have the RSPCA Staff on hand to talk to about the dog and their history, but ultimately you are giving a dog (who deserves to have love and cuddles) their forever home and they become a big part of your family. Everyone loves a puppy but they all grow up and get old like us and the EARS scheme helps so many deserving dogs who, through no fault of their own, need to find new homes to live out their twilight years. They equally make your life better and make you smile everyday with their overwhelming love and affection - no matter what their backgrounds may be and we would tell everyone to get an EARS dog - we are huge supporters!!

Why did you adopt from theEARS scheme?

1. How did you find out about the scheme? From the RSPCA website.

2. What is the best part of the scheme? The scheme is great for the help and support it gives the adopters. Samuel is also on a prescription diet so I get it at a subsidised price.

3. What made you choose the pet you have chosen? I fell in love with Samuel when I was fostering him and couldn’t give him back.

4. What would you say to someone who was considering getting an animal on the scheme? Do it. One of the best things I’ve ever done! Samuel is so funny and fitted into my life like it was meant to be.

5. Have you had pets on the scheme previously? No 6. Tell us a little about your family, interaction with your

pet and maybe what impact they have made. He is adored by the whole family including his much younger adopted brother George. He was brought in by the RSPCA Inspectors and he was in a terrible state. I feel lucky to have him.

Home VisitsHome visitors play a vital part in rehoming our animals and without them we wouldn’t be able to rehome as many as we do. The aim of a home visitor is to visit the homes of potential adopters to ensure they are suitable for an RSPCA animal. In some circumstances a home visitor is asked to revisit homes to ensure that the adoption has been a success. We generally do a 2 month post visit for all our dogs and it is also a lovely opportunity for the visitor to see the dog in their new home and the relationship that has built between dog and owner.

Home visits are required for Cats, Dogs and small furries such as rabbits, guinea pigs and ferrets. Sometimes the visits are for those that are interested in becoming a fosterer for our centre which makes them a vital part of this process and the more fosterers we have for a

variation of animals, the quicker many of them can rehabilitate.

Some of our home visitors have even been trained in the Elderly Animal Rehoming Scheme (EARS), these home visitors have had that extra training to ensure that not only does the animal go to a great home, but the new owner is fully aware of the scheme and they make use of all the benefits.

We are seeking out more home visitors - especially for the EARS scheme - as we have recently merged with Bradford and now cover a larger area. The home visit for a potential adopter can sometimes be the beginning of something new and exciting and we are grateful for the time and commitment of all of our home visitors.

Branch Merger!

In 2016 the RSPCA Bradford animal centre closed due to the lack of funds needed to refurbish the facilities to the standard required. It was a sad day, but the branch continued to operate under temporary trusteeship with the help of RSPCA Regional staff.

Neighbouring branches, including RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield & District Branch continued to take in animals rescued in the Bradford area by the National RSPCA Inspectors and those

animals received veterinary treatment and rehabilitation before being found new homes.

The next few months will be an exciting time for our branch as we welcome our new Bradford supporters and raise awareness in our new area. We’re also very proud of our new branch logo which is proudly displayed on the front of this magazine and you will start to see added to our website, social media, events and the Animal Centre and Charity Shop signs.

We have some big news for 2018! On 1st January our branch merged with the Bradford RSPCA to become the RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield, Bradford & District Branch.

RSPCA Inspectors Although we are a self funding branch, we are part of a network of RSPCA Branches that work alongside the RSPCA Inspectors and we fully support the work they do.

Did you know that on average every 30 seconds someone in England and Wales dials 0300 1234 999 - the RSPCA’s 24-hour cruelty line. In 2016 they received 1,153,744 phone calls. What to do if you see an act of cruelty:Take a note of what you’ve seen and then call the 24-hour cruelty line 0300 1234 999. You will be asked to give a detailed description of what you have seen or heard.

You need to give your name, address and telephone number for their records – they will treat your personal information with confidence and it will not be shared with anybody else. If you wish to know the result of the officer’s

investigation, they will need your details to contact you back. Please note that this may only be when the investigation has been concluded. The date, time, place of the offence and photographs showing the cruelty involved may provide vital evidence in a prosecution case.

The controller will need to ask you a series of questions about the animal(s) involved to establish the full situation. These will relate to what you have seen in relation to the animal’s environment and its bodily condition. The RSPCA believes that the basic welfare of all animals must take into account the ‘Five Welfare Needs’. These needs are: - somewhere suitable to live - a proper diet, including fresh water - the ability to express normal behaviour - for any need to be housed with, or apart from, other animals - protection from and treatment of illness and injury.

Dog Training Classes

Need to report Animal Abuse or Neglect? Please call the National RSPCA Helpline on 0300 1234 999

The RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield, Bradford and District Branch run puppy training classes for dogs up to 1 year of age. The classes are aimed at teaching dog owners all aspects of responsible dog ownership. This includes how to handle your dog, how to play with your dog including teaching them to drop toys on command. The course will also teach you how to train your dog to respond to commands such as sit, down, stay and wait as well as teaching your dog to walk on a loose lead and come back to you when off the lead. You will learn how to use engagement and motivation to train your dog and build a really successful bond between owner and dog. The classes will be taught using clicker training which is a kind, fun and effective way to teach your dog new skills.

The courses will be run by Mike Cuthbert the Branch’s Dog Training and Behaviour Advisor. Mike has over 15 years experience of working with and training dogs of all ages and breeds during his career with the RSPCA. Mike is also a full member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (membership number 01240) and he uses reward based methods when training dogs and owners.

The cost of the course will be £80 for 7 weeks (one week without your dog) All of which will go directly to the branch to help fund vital animal welfare work that we do.

The classes will take place at St Johns Church, Brighouse, HD6 1HL. We run two classes on a Saturday afternoon, one at 2:00pm at one at 3:00pm. The classes last approximately 45 minutes.

Please note your dog must be fully vaccinated to be able to attend the classes.

Please keep an eye on our website as this year our dog Training and Behaviour Advisor Mike Cuthbert will be passing on his extensive knowledge by hosting several workshops, on many aspects of Dog Training and Behaviour.

Meet the Team: Gemma What is your role at the Animal Centre?I am the Reception Supervisor, I started out as a youth trainee then moved to kennel assistant before working on Reception.

How long have you worked at the Animal Centre?I have worked at the Animal Centre for 16 years!

What is the best and worst thing about working on Reception? The worst would probably be when people don’t understand how our branch works and what we can/can’t do as a charity. We often get phone calls of people complaining that we haven’t been to check up on a complaint and you find yourself repeating the same thing about being the rehoming centre and only the National RSPCA Inspectors can investigate complaints. We also get lots of calls about stray dogs and you don’t want people to think we are just turning them away but

Stray DogsThe Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005, places full responsibility with your local authority for dealing with stray dogs and associated stray dog services.

Calderdale, Kirklees & Bradford Council have full responsibility for the catching and safe-keeping of stray dogs throughout the borough. The RSPCA and other animal welfare charities cannot pick up stray dogs or accept them from people who find them and will direct those people to their local authority. In fact, we can only deal with a stray dog in an absolute emergency, i.e. if the dog is in imminent danger of death or severe suffering and the authority is unable to attend.

We will be happy to take a report and scan the dog but we are not allowed to take it into our kennels.

again, this is something we are not allowed to deal with as it is the local Dog Warden that collects stray dogs and houses them before hopefully reuniting them with their owners or finding them new homes. We get calls about stray cats too and we have to remind people that sometimes the cats will belong to someone so we can’t just take them in and rehome them, we need to give the owners a chance to come forward first! A lot of this is to do with educating the public on our charity and I just hope that after each phone call they might let others know about what we actually do!

The best thing about my job has to be seeing the animals going to their new homes, it’s a wonderful feeling after seeing them cared for, rehabilitated and trained in our centre before finding their new families – it’s a really lovely part of my day!

MicrochippingIn April 2016 it became compulsory to microchip your dog. If you have a pet and would like it to be microchipped please phone 01422 365628 to make an appointment. The microchip is the size of a grain of rice and is permanent. We do promote this procedure, which is painless. If you are unfortunate and your pet is lost, the dog wardens, vets, RSPCA Inspectors, and ourselves all scan any animal which comes into our possession. If microchipped, the details of the owner are registered on a computer and your pet can be speedily returned to you. The cost for micro chipping is £10. We can also microchip for £8 for those on means tested benefits

Events

Here at the RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield and Bradford branch, we’re always planning lots of exciting events throughout the year for our supporters to attend and enjoy! Last year we introduced our Halloween Monster Ball and an online pet photo competition, which were a great success! Not to mention our well known annual events like K9 Party In The Park, Doggy Dash For Life and Shibden Dog Day.

We just love getting out into the local community and meeting our supporters (…and their animals of course!) but did you know that you can help us by volunteering at our events too? This can involve helping us set up on the day, to manning a stall or even getting involved

in the running our fun dog shows! You can also help by simply sharing our events on social media or by hanging up posters in your local area. If you’re a local business, or have a stall that you would like to bring along to our events, please get in touch as we’re always looking to involve interesting stalls at our outdoor fundraising events too.

If you want to get involved or have any enquiries please contact [email protected]. Be sure to hang up our diary of events or add us on Facebook (RSPCA Halifax, Hudds & Bradford) to keep up to date with what’s going on near you!

Twilight SchemeCan’t adopt an elderly animal? You can still help to pay for their care by joining the RSPCA Twilight Scheme. The Twilight Scheme has been set up to support our Elderly Animal Re-homing Scheme (EARS). The majority of elderly animals require veterinary treatment before rehoming and your monthly donation will help towards the care of our elderly animals. Please call in to our Branch or visit our website for more details.

For a monthly payment of £5.00 per month to the RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield, Bradford and District Branch, the adopter qualifies for the following benefits:

• A Booster vaccination and health check once a year Routine worming tablets and flea treatment Access to our Animal Centre vet during routine clinic times at £5.00 per consultation.

• All current and future medication will be offered at a discounted price. Prescription diets will also be offered at a discounted price.

• Euthanasia at RSPCA Animal Centre. Emergency cover if an owner is hospitalized i.e. temporary 2 week foster care.

• Discount cremation service if required.• Many local vets are participating in

the Scheme and will allow members a discount of up to 20%. This applies only to elective surgery and the emergency treatment of accidents, sudden illness, injury, hospitalization and emergency euthanasia.

• Should the adopter become unable to look after the animal, we will then arrange for it to be returned to us and to be re-homed again via the Scheme.

• Adopters who do not wish to join the scheme can still adopt one of our EARS animals at 50% of the usual adoption fee.

EARS

It is relatively common for healthy elderly dogs and cats (10 years+) to enter the RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield, Bradford and District Branch, often due to their owner’s ill health or death. But few prospective adopters want to take on such an animal, mainly because of the possible financial implications. To alleviate these animal’s stress at suddenly becoming homeless and to facilitate rehoming, we have a scheme to provide support and assistance to members of the public over 18 years of age wishing to home an elderly animal.

Adoption Procedures • The animal appears healthy and can be adopted.

• There is or has been a medical condition which does not require further treatment, but the potential adopters would need to be made aware of. This would also be declared to the Insurance Company which provides the 4 weeks free insurance as part of the adoption.

• The animal has a condition which requires further investigation (e.g. blood tests/x-rays) or treatment and therefore is not available for adoption until further notice from the vet. Please note that it is not feasible or cost effective to carry out x-rays or blood tests on every animal that on veterinary examination appears healthy, just in case there is an underlying or pre-existing condition. Most animals come to the centre with an unknown medical history. However where this information is available, it will be provided to potential adopters and the Insurance company.

The adoption fee includes the following: Initial vaccinations, flea & worm treatment, microchipping, neutering, health check, 4 weeks’ free insurance (dogs, cats & rabbits) and identity disc.

To adopt an animal from our Centre, you need to be over 18 years old. You will be asked to complete an application form. If you live in rent-ed accommodation we will require written per-mission from the landlord before being able to view any animals.

Any animals that you are interested in and are suitable, will be shown to you by a member of staff. If you see an animal that you would like to rehome, we shall place a reserve on it. One of our home visitors will then call to arrange a Home Visit.

All animals have a health check from the vet before they are adopted. Current adoption fees: Dogs from £120, Puppies £150- £250, Cats from £65, Rabbits £25, Guinea pigs £10, Ferrets £30 and small miscellaneous animals range from £4 - £5.

Every animal will be examined by a vet prior to adoption. At this point we will be advised one of the following:

Fosterers can play an important role in a rescue animal’s life.

There are certain animals that do not do well in a kennel/cattery environment

These may include dogs or cats that are pregnant/ nursing, elderly, injured, convalescing or orphaned kittens and puppies. There are no costs involved to the fosterer as all equipment, food and veterinary care is provided by our Centre. All we ask is for spare room, spare time and spare love, to care for our needy animals.

Some foster placements could be a few days whilst others may be a few weeks. Whatever time you can offer us will be extremely valuable. If you are interested in becoming a foster carer, you will be asked to complete an application to foster form. A home visit will then be arranged so that we can discuss fostering in greater depth and determine the type of animal that you wish to help.

Could you join our Foster Team? Get in touch with us today! 01422 365628 or [email protected]

Willing To CareWilling to Care - Who is The Scheme For? The Scheme is for any person over the age of eighteen who is concerned about the welfare of their dog or cat after their death and requires the peace of mind that their pet will be rehomed with loving new owners.

How does the Scheme Work? • You must specify in your Will that you are

leaving your pet to the RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield, Bradford & District Branch under the “Willing to Care Scheme.”

• If you are taken into a nursing home or feel unable to look after your pet, you can sign your pet into our care for rehoming and he/she will be given priority entrance.

• On being informed of a member’s death, the branch will immediately take special care of your beloved pet.

• If required we will arrange to collect your pet and bring him or her into our care.

• Using the answers to your pet’s questionnaire (updated annually) we will ensure that there is minimal stress to your pet by following where possible his/her likes/dislikes and routines.

• If your pet is over 10 years of age, we are especially well equipped to rehome him or her.

The branch has an award winning Elderly Animal Re homing Scheme so we will automatically place your pet on this scheme and look after him or her in a foster home until adoption.

We will ensure your pet is adopted as soon as possible in a suitable home for the rest of his/her life. Careful home checks will be carried out to ensure we have the right home for your special pet.

We are home to many animals throughout the year and they all require fresh food, safe dry accommodation, toys, warmth, veterinary care and of course, love.

You can help care for them by sponsoring a space and you WILL make a big difference to the animals in our Centre.

How does sponsorship work? Our Centre has its own website where all the animals that are looking for new homes can be viewed. Each animal has its own space and we are hoping that you will sponsor one of these spaces.

Who is the scheme for?Everybody! You could also apply for sponsorship as a gift for a friend or family member.

What does it cost?Sponsorship is available on a yearly or monthly basis. Dog £300/year or £30/month.Cat £200/year or £20/month. Rabbit £60/year or £5/month.

How will we reward your kindness?• Display your name or words of your choice

on the pen in the Centre• Send you a special Sponsorship Certificate• Annual VIP invitation to visit the Centre• Name or words of choice on our website

This year why not sponsor an Animal Spaceand help an animal in need

Why should you donate to the RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield, Bradford & District Branch? We are a separately registered charity and as such, we must raise our own income to cover the expenses of caring for the hundreds of animals that come through our doors each year. Many have been ill-treated or neglected by their cruel owners and often require months of care and rehabilitation before being found a new forever home.

Why are legacies important?Quite simply we rely on legacy income to fund 25% of our expenditure, without legacy income we would not be able to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome the animals that need our care. We are also saving to achieve our dream.

What is our dream? Our current RSPCA Animal Centre is just too small, it has served us well for over 30 years, undergone many changes and upgrades but we just don’t have enough space. There is so much more we know we can achieve in the interest of animal welfare with a bigger more rural site. A legacy to our branch will greatly assist in helping us achieve our goal and make a difference to the lives of the animals in RSPCA care.

Making every penny countTo be sure your donation large or small goes to our branch, please make cheques payable to RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield, Bradford & District Branch or if you want to make a cash donation, please call in at the Animal Centre or contact the Branch Office on 01422 341160

If you want to give regularly please join one of our schemes, Sponsor an Animal, Twilight, or sign up to give by direct debit online via our website.

If you are a tax payer, then your donation can be enhanced by 25p per £1 given under the Gift Aid Scheme.

If you decide to leave our branch a bequest in your Will, it is vital that the wording is correct for it to benefit our branch. Please contact the Branch Office if you would like to discuss leaving a bequest to RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield, Bradford & District Branch.

Our name is RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield, Bradford & District Branch, please use our full title in your Will

Our Registered Charity No. is 225575, please include this in your Will

Any legacy left to charity as part of your estate is exempt from inheritance tax. There are three main types of legacies:• A pecuniary bequest is a fixed sum

of money left to RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield, Bradford & District Branch. (225575)

• A specific bequest is the giving of an item, could be jewellery, property but not money.

• A residuary bequest is the most common and may name legatees – family and friends, with the residue of the estate being divided between one or more charities.
