And finally, PCF is excited to launch our Be 1 In 100 Campaign. Over the years, our Endowment Builders have created 75 named funds. These generous individuals and families have enabled PCF to award over $500,000 in each of the last two years to 65 diverse nonprofits in the greater Pasadena area.

If we can increase the number of our Endowment Builders to 100, this will dramatically support our goal to reach $1 million in annual grants to qualified local charitable organizations.

The Fefferman Award Committee is pleased to announce that the Dr. Robert Fefferman Award for Excellence in Math and Science Education will become an annual award to benefit Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) math and science teachers and students. The Pasadena Community Foundation will continue to manage this charitable program.

During this pilot year, PCF worked with the anonymous donor to create a sustainable and impactful award program. This spring, the $50,000 award was allocated as follows:

Mr. Lewis Watson, a mathematics teacher at Marshall Fundamental High School, received a $25,000 check for unrestricted personal use. Two graduating seniors from Marshall, Krikor Ailanjian and Caolan John, will each receive a $5,000 college scholarship for outstanding academic performance in math or science. Marshall itself received $15,000 for the purchase of sophisticated calculators for students in high-level math classes; a document camera; Pasco Sparklink interfaces; and motion detectors. This equipment will allow students in science classes to measure data

which they can then use their math skills to analyze. Math teachers like this because it builds on cross-curricular collaboration.

Robert Fefferman is the Max Mason Distinguished Service Professor of Mathematics at the University of Chicago. His work includes research mathematics, teaching, and service to his University and to the community at large including the Chicago Public Schools. He is an inspiration to many, including the donor who named the fund in his honor.

Michael Schneickert joined the PCF Board in 2011, serving with great enthusiasm and passion. Committed to the work of the Foundation, Michael believed strongly in the power of endowments to make a long-term impact. As chair of the Finance Committee, he was an advocate

for prudent stewardship of the many endowments PCF holds to ensure the funds continue to grow each year. In 2007, Michael and his wife, Karen Otamura established The Schneickert-Otamura Endowment. Since that time, the couple made contributions to grow the fund

that generates annual distributions to support PCF’s discretionary grants. Michael tragically passed away on July 1st of this year. He is deeply missed by his family, friends and everyone he worked with at the Pasadena Community Foundation. Michael’s wife Karen has asked that memorial donations be made to their fund that remains a legacy of his love for Pasadena. Donations can be made directly by going to pasadenacf.org

When Denzel turned 6, he moved in with his grandparents, as his mom had been struggling. They enrolled Denzel at the Boys & Girls Club in Pasadena so he could play with other kids. The timing turned out to be perfect.

In 2002, the same year Denzel joined, the Boys & Girls Club made the decision to shift focus and introduce kids to computer technology so they could learn skills crucial to success in school and in life. Lacking the funds to create a Technology Center, the Club reached out to the Pasadena Community Foundation which responded with a $50,000 grant.

Denzel is a bright kid, and when he discovered the new Technology Center, he found something at which he could truly excel. “We did not have computer or internet access at home, so the only place I could learn about technology was at the Club.” Spending hours each week, learning how computers could help with schoolwork, he became a top student. Denzel is now a sophomore at Cal State Monterey, majoring in Business and Graphic Design, and he’s doing great. “Looking back, I realize the Boys & Girls Club gave me the confidence and skills I needed to succeed at school,” says Denzel gratefully. And he still stops by the Club when he is home for the summer to talk with staff and the kids who currently enjoy the benefits of the Center.

The Pasadena Community Foundation has been a long-time supporter of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Pasadena, awarding over $500,000 in grants since 1954. PCF has helped provide the Clubs with dozens of improvements, including playground equipment, roof repairs and a new gymnasium floor. In 2014, the Club was awarded a $25,000 grant to remodel the kids’ bathrooms.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Pasadena do an extraordinary job helping kids in the area, and as a result, there are hundreds of success stories like Denzel’s. The Club is a great example of the kind of local organization that makes Pasadena a stronger community, with the help of the Pasadena Community Foundation.

programs of PcF in six fields of interest.

PcF’s goal is to increase our family of endowment builders to 100, and we invite you to be 1 of them. For as little $10,000 you can get started today on your fund, your passion, your legacy.

6

Jim and Priscilla Gamb have built a rich life together. They share several passions including family, education, healthcare and Pasadena.

Priscilla grew up here and attended Pasadena public schools. Recently retired as Director of Volunteers at Huntington Hospital, she has vast volunteer and Board experience and was elected to PCF’s Board in 2015.

Jim remembers, “I fell in love with Pasadena 50 years ago while driving up Orange Grove to Priscilla’s home above the Rose Bowl.” Jim spent his career in the investment business and used his significant financial expertise in service to various education and healthcare organizations. He also served on the PCF Board for ten years.

“We chose to dedicate our endowment to healthcare as a way to support the work of the foundation in this vital area, and to say thank you for the benefits to our family over the years.”

Dottie Nelson spent a significant portion of her working career making a difference in the lives of people in the local community. That time included 12 years as CEO at Villa Esperanza, a nonprofit organization devoted to the care and education of disabled children and adults.

Dottie and her husband, Byron, wanted to find a way to give back to Pasadena when they retired. Dottie’s previous

experience made her aware of the wonderful work being done by the Pasadena Community Foundation.

Dottie says, “It feels very good to know the endowment fund we established will go to help people in need in the community. I have confidence the PCF team will make sure our money gets to those organizations that need it most.”

“Giving is something we always did,” says Arlene Harder. “My husband Bob and I felt incredibly grateful and blessed for all that we have, and it was important we give a portion of our income to people less fortunate.”

For years, Bob and Arlene provided funding to several large national organizations. However, they were concerned their donations were not making a meaningful impact in the lives of people who most needed help.

Arlene spoke with her attorney, Karl Swaidan at Hahn and Hahn, who suggested that PCF could help maximize her philanthropic goals. Arlene did some investigating and discovered that PCF had been a strong supporter of a number of vibrant nonprofits in Pasadena since 1953.

In 2014, after Bob’s passing, Arlene set up the Bob & Arlene Harder Endowment to support local nonprofits and make a lasting, genuine impact on the community.Karl Swaidan

One of the main goals of the Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts at Memorial Park in Pasadena is to make live music accessible to everyone, creating a stronger and better-connected local community.

With an annual program of an amazing 50 free concerts, the Levitt Pavilion is flourishing, and Memorial Park has become a vibrant hub of activity. However, the challenge had always been sound quality at the concerts, which was fair at best. In

2015, the Levitt Pavilion applied for funding from the Pasadena Community Foundation for the resources to improve concert experiences. PCF awarded the Levitt Pavilion a capital grant to purchase new speakers, which were recently installed.

According to Renee Bodie, Executive Director, Levitt Pavilion – Los Angeles & Pasadena, “With our new speaker system, the sound at Levitt Pavilion Pasadena has never been better, and our audience appreciates the difference. Thank you so much to the Pasadena Community Foundation for helping us create a beautiful experience under the stars for the enjoyment of the community.”

Beyond a diverse concert schedule, its popular intern program provides inspiration and motivation for high school students who dream of a career in music, as well as teaching them practical skills necessary to work in the industry — from marketing, to event production, to audio gear maintenance.
