Module 6 Activity: Counting, adding subtracting, multiplying, dividing Unit 1: My country Number concept/Number manipulation/Thinking & reasoning
Counting activities: Count forwards and backwards in sixes to 100 starting at any number.
Use a variety of counters to work practically with the 6x and ÷ table. Take out 72 counters. The learner puts them in groups of 6. Then counts in sixes to 72. Share divide the counters into groups of 6. The learner needs to understand that division is an inverse operation of multiplication e.g. 7 x 6 = 42; 42 ÷ 6 = 7; 4 x 6 = 24; 24 ÷ 6 = 4 etc. There are only a few new tables to learn i.e. 6 x 6 = 36; 7 x 6 = 42; 8 x 6 = 48; 9 x 6 = 54; 11 x 6 = 66 and 12 x 6 = 72
Dividing is the same as repeated subtraction. To divide 96 by 6:
We know that 10 x 6 = 60 so we subtract this from 96. This leaves 36. We know 6 x 6 = 36 so we subtract this too. All together we have subtracted 6 a total of 16 times. This is the same as saying 96 ÷ 6 = 16.
6 9 6
- 6 0 10 x 6
3 6 - 3 6
6 x 6

Module 6 Activity: Word problems Unit 1: My country Number manipulation/Fine motor movements
Answer the questions as quickly as possible: 1. What is 20 minus 3 fours? 2. Multiply 5 by 6. Now subtract 6 five times. What is the answer? 3. Subtract 4 tens from 7 tens. How many left? 4. By how many is 9 fours more than 5 fours? 5. How many times can you subtract 5 from 20? 6. How many times can you subtract 10 from 40? 7. How many times can you subtract 2 from the sum of 4 twos and 3 twos? 8. Subtract 2 fives from 6 fives. What is the difference? 9. I am thinking of a number. If I multiply the number by 2 the answer is equal to the sum of 7 and 5. What is the number? 10. During a term with 10 weeks I save 25c every week. How much money did I save?

They named one female whale Lady Jane.
"I wish that we could communicate with the whales," said Harry. A very strange thing happened. The huge, graceful whale whom they had named Lady Jane, winked at Harry. "This cannot be true," thought Harry. Lady Jane came closer to Harry. "I know that you like to help animals Harry," she said. "You are a brave man. Can you help me? I would be so grateful." Harry gaped at the whale in amazement. Zane also looked amazed. "Did you hear the whale?" asked Harry. "Yes, I did," said Zane. "This is very strange Harry. You are famous!" "We must try to help Lady Jane," stated Harry. "What can we do for you, Lady Jane?" asked Harry. "Zane and I would like to help you." "I grazed my tail on a rusty shipwreck in the sea," said the whale. "I am in quite a state as it is not getting better." "Zane you are the right person to help Lady Jane," said Harry. "You will have to keep still while we take a look at the graze," stated Zane. Lady Jane kept very still while Harry and Zane dived under her. They looked at her tail. It was a very bad graze. "What a shame," said Zane. "Lady Jane must be in a lot of pain." "We will be back later," said Harry. Harry and Zane raced back to their chalet. "I must make a paste for the graze," stated Zane. "I will also need some bandages." Zane got to work at once. As a game ranger he knew about herbs. He knew which herbs to use to make the

paste. Zane used sage as an antiseptic. He used wild purslane (pigweed) and witch hazel to heal the graze. He mixed all the herbs into a paste. "Now we need bandages," stated Zane. They asked the people in the other chalets for help. Everyone wanted to help. The people gave their sails from sailboats. They used the sails as bandages. The bandages were waterproof. Zane mixed the herb paste with clay. They took the paste and the bandages to Lady Jane. Lady Jane was still in the bay. She was waiting for Harry and Zane. "Keep your tail out of the water," said Zane. "We will put this herb paste on your tail. We will put the bandages over the paste." Lady Jane put her tail in the air. Harry and Zane put the paste on the graze. They had to use a chain to get to the graze. Five men helped them with the bandages. It took a long time. It was late when they finished. "Thank you," said Lady Jane. Lady Jane had to keep still for three days. Har-ry and Zane came to see her everyday. After three days they took off the bandages. The graze was healed. Lady Jane was very grateful. "Thank you for saving me," said Lady Jane. Lady Jane said to Harry and Zane. "I have a magical place to show you. It is a cave under the sea. Can you manage to hold onto me? We will dive down to the cave." Harry and Zane gaped at her in amazement.
