ABOUT THE PRESENTER

PRACTICAL NEUROSCIENCE: HOW TO USE NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN NEUROSCIENCE TO IMPROVE CLIENT OUTCOME AND IMPROVE MOTIVATION › Neuroplasticity: How the brain is rewired. › Neurogenesis: How to grow new neurons. › Affect Asymmetry: The difference between the two

hemispheres and changing mood. › The Default Mode Network: Our tendency to spend 30% of

our waking ours someplace other than where we are. › Mindful Presence: How to be here now.

MOOD COGNITIVE DAMPERS › Alcohol: downregulating neurotransmitter systems. › Marijuana: dampening neurogenesis. › Fat cells: the destructive role of chronic infl ammation.

THE SEEDS FACTORS THE SOCIAL FACTOR: HOW TO EXPLAIN & USE THE SOCIAL BRAIN SYSTEMS

› Strong Social Support is identifi ed with greater longevity, positive mood and cognitive skills. The social brain networks are critical for affect regulation, the orbitofrontal cortex & amygdala.

THE EXERCISE FACTOR: HOW TO PROMOTE EXERCISE AS A TREATMENT FACTOR

› Describing How Exercise Alters Brains: It is the best antidepressant and antianxiety treatment. It is associated with the stimulation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a growth factor that supports the rebirth of neurons, elevates mood and reduces anxiety.

THE EDUCATION FACTOR: HOW TO WORK WITH THE MEMORY SYSTEMS AND PROMOTE CLIENT LEARNING

› Explaining the Importance of Cognitive Reserve: How evidence that lifelong learning enhances brain span, reduces risk of dementia, and increases longevity. On-going learning helps those suffering from depression and/or anxiety look ahead to possibilities and builds interest in life beyond their psychological problems.

THE DIET FACTOR: EXPLAINING THE DETAILS OF A BALANCED DIET TO PROMOTE BRAIN HEALTH

› Describing How Brain Structure & Neurotransmitter Reserve: How these factors are dependent upon a balanced diet. Key amino acids are essential for synthesising neurotransmitters needed for positive emotions, calm focused awareness and learning.

THE SLEEP FACTOR: EXPLAINING HOW TO GET A GOOD NIGHT SLEEP FOR BRAIN HEALTH

› Promoting good quality sleep: how consolidates new memories and may help erase remove unessential memories; how dreams may contribute to memory-consolidation.

John Arden, PhD, is a clinical psychologist specialising in neuroscience. He is internationally-known and consistently rated as one ofthe most knowledgeable and insightful presenters. He is the author of 14 bestselling books, including Brain2Brain, The Brain Bible, Rewire Your Brain, Brain-Based Therapy with Adults and Brain-Based Therapy with Children and Adolescents. He presents workshops on brain-based therapy internationally and in the United States.

Dr Arden has written books on anxiety (The Brain-Based Anxiety Workbook), OCD (The Brain-Based OCD Workbook) and PTSD (Conquering Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, with Dr. Victoria Beckner) as well Improving Your Memory for Dummies; Consciousness, Dreams, Self: A Transdisciplinary Approach (winner of the Choice 1997 Outstanding Academic Book Award); and Science, Theology, and Consciousness. Dr Arden’s study of neuropsychology has inspired him to integrate neuroscience and psychotherapy, synthesising the biological and psychological aspects into a new vision for psychotherapy: Brain-Based Therapy. His work incorporates what is currently known about the brain and its capacities, including neuroplasticity and neurogenesis, with psychotherapy research, mindfulness, nutritional neuroscience and social intelligence.

PROGRAM OUTLINE

LEARNING OBJECTIVES » Learn about brain architecture and the roles that different parts

of the brain can play in both the creation and resolution of emotional distress.

» List Brain- based principles for working more effectively with mental disorders, addictions and stress.

» Understand the latest science on the long term impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) on the social and emotional brain and what can be done so that the epigenetic changes can switch back to promote better health.

» Learn which traditional therapeutic interventions are counter therapeutic from a brain based perspective and why.

» List ideas for client education that assist to frame problems and behaviours in a neuroscience context with the goal of increasing insight and increasing motivation for positive change.

» Identify fi ve major components and radical lifestyle changes that will assist in:

› Improving wellbeing, › Mood stabilisation, › Reduced risk of cognitive decline and diminished rumination, › Protecting the brain from rapid aging, › Improving memory consolidation.

This seminar offers down-to-earth and practical suggestions for effective, positive client outcomes using new developments in neuroscience. Every year there is tremendous misinformation on brain health in the popular press and in the pop psychotherapy genre with new fads and claims. This seminar describes the 5 key factors that research has consistently shownto support brain health. Heavily supported by new developments from neuroscience, the research overthrows many preconceived beliefs about mental health and the brain.

Recent advances in neuroscience have increased our knowledge of how and why people change, and what to change in their lifestyles to maintain good health and prevent relapse. This training examines the use of brain-based interventions that enhances outcomes for clients, facilitating effective existing intervention modalities.

When people work to eliminate harmful thoughts and behaviour patterns, the therapeutic process can feel like a battle against their own brain due to multi-directional interactions going on between negative past experiences, existing behaviour, thoughts & emotions, gene expression, and the brain.

Brain-based interventions view the therapeutic process as a channel to re-wire specifi c pathways in the brain to positively change mood and behaviour, synthesising neuroscience, memory research, developmental psychology, and evidence based treatments into a hybrid therapeutic model. By bringing awareness of neuroscience into the treatment, practitioners can teach clients to work with their brain’s innate processes to reinforce progress and achieve healthier, positive outcomes regardless of their age, gender or situation. Learn also how the brain and body become stuck in bad moods and compromised cognition with self-destructive lifestyle practices.

Healthy brain behaviours can be remembered with the SEEDS formula, teaching important healthy brain factors that your clients need to “plant” now to cultivate through the rest of their life to live with positive mental health.
