The Source Arts Centre Summer 2016 Programme

The days are finally getting brighter and a little warmer so it’s a good time to get out of thehouse and come to the Source to see a few events. We’ve got a good selection of musical acts – the highly tipped Dublin songwriter Andersonwho became famous for selling his album door-to-door, arrives for a solo show; Cork-bornsongwriter Mick Flannery presents his new album in another solo gig and we’ve opened up the auditorium for some tribute shows like Live Forever and Roadhouse Doors to give a moreconcert-type feel, so check these out on our brochure.Legendary Manchester poet John Cooper Clarke comes to visit us on May 4th; we have theatrewith ‘The Corner Boys’, God Bless The Child’ and Brendan Balfe reminisces about the goldendays of Irish radio in early June.Summer is a time for the kids and again we have a series of arts workshops and classesrunning over the summer months to keep them all occupied.Keep a lookout for our website: www.thesourceartscentre.ie for updates to our programme aswe regularly add new events. Vincent Hannon: Celtic Seasons VISUAL ART

Vincent Hannon trained in landscape design in the UK before returning to readfor a BA at NUI, Galway. While practising landscape design he discovered the poetry of Omar Khayyámin translation by Edward FitzGerald. This developed an existing fascinationwith hinterlands where controls and wildness are interchangeable dependingon the direction of examination. In recent years he has been exploringemigration from a visual artistic point of view. In this exhibition, 'CelticSeasons', Vincent develops the theme of memory, its’ distortions and its’ability to grip truths.

This event begins with acclaimed Tipperary author Donal Ryan reading an excerptfrom ‘The Long Puck’, a story set in Syria and taken from his collection of shortstories ‘A Slanting of the Sun’.Akram Shibly’s documentary, ‘Waiting at the Door’ which explains the current crisisfrom an insiders perspective will also be screened.As the war in Syria continues, and with people forced to flee their homes, all fundsraised at this event will go towards supporting the education of Syrian childrendisplaced to Lebanon and Jordan. This is an initiative of the Syrian families resettled in Thurles under the RefugeeResettlement Programme and supported by the Office of Migrant Integration.Everyone welcome!

Mick Flannery – Solo MUSIC

In the end of the day and the heel of the hunt, you’re left with thesongs. Everything comes and goes, the shows and the tours and theapplause and the acclaim. Everything else doesn’t matter in the long run. But the songs remain. Mick Flannery realised this a longtime ago. With acclaimed collections such as ‘White Lies’ and ‘Red To Blue’under his belt, this solo performance at The Source will be a chanceto hear Mick showcase some of his brand new material from hisupcoming album ‘By the Rule’.

The short stories of Cork born Frank O'Connor are universally regarded asbeing classics of their kind. For the first time, ‘My Oedipus Complex’, ‘The Genius’ and ‘First Confession’ are brought together within a singlefull-length play. Meet young Michael, who goes into mortal combat with his father whenhe returns from the First World War, Larry, a genius who cannotunderstand why the world can't keep up with him, and Jackie, who hasthe grim task of not only making his first confession and communion,but must also deal with his very obstreperous grandmother. Gerudo Valley MUSIC

Gerudo Valley are a three-piece Irish contemporary band, based in Thurlesfeaturing Stewy Yeomans - Lead Vocals, Guitar, Paul Ryan - Vocals, Guitarand Sean Mongey - Banjo. Gigging locally for over a year, they bring theirunique style to a plethora of music and give it their signature twist. Thisconcert at The Source sees the launch of their debut album entitled ‘TalesFrom The Valley’ which features songs such as ‘It’s Been A While’ and‘River Bend’, along with covers such as ‘Hallelujah’ and some traditionalIrish tunes. The album was recorded in the Valley Lab studios fromNovember 2015 to March 2016.Those attending will receive a free cd of the new album.

Exhibition – 30 Years, Artists, Places VISUAL ARTSThursday 09 June to Wednesday 13 July

This exhibition is a collection of artworks owned by LocalAuthorities across Ireland and marks 30 years since the first localauthority arts officer was appointed in Ireland. The works speak of places, people and home which reflects uponlocal authority arts development as just that, of a place and of apeople, of rural and urban Ireland, of home in a changing islandwhere we are bold with new ideas but rooted in our past.Renowned artists such as Tony O'Malley, Alice Maher, RobertBallagh, John Kindness, Norah McGuiness, Sean McSweeney,Sean Lynch and John Shinnors alongside emerging artists CoraCummins, Cleary Connolly, Lisa Fingleton, Jenny Brady, VanessaLopez and David Stephenson and many others feature in theexhibition.

Live Forever are the definitive tribute to Machester’s Oasis. The Source Youth Arts Project presents

Beyond The Frame PERFORMANCE

Now in its 11th year, The Source Youth Arts SummerProgramme brings together another spectacular five dayproject where participants will be creating and working with masks,projections, puppets and shadow theatre. ‘Beyond theFrame’ will explore connections between images fromIrish, Spanish, European and Syrian portrait artworks anddevelop storylines and performances from these images– all culminating in a final performance.Led by theatre director Tony Fegan, designer Tadashi Katoand performance artist Terence Erraught, the artisticteam will work with Irish and Spanish participants tocreate a large scale portable shadow/digital projectiontheatre performance.Open to young people aged between 11 to 17 years whoare interested in performance, design, music and digitalprojection.
