Still upsets continued in round 2 as on board 7 saw Dmitri slip up against fast improving Sam Gluzman and then Max on board 10 went down against the other Dmitri in what was the longest game of the round. Thomas Ebeyan is a bit of an unknown quantity but he completely outplayed Shaun Fielder. Fludey
lost on time in a postponed game which may or may not have had the clock set incorrectly. This result determined the pairing together of the 2 travellers from Malasia, who are due to return on the day after round 3. It is good to see so many new faces and the return of Dmitri Dyson, although he seems a little rusty
2011 Box Hill Open Round 2 results
The Bendigo bank sponsorship opens up fresh opportunities for the format of the upcoming Canterbury day nighter now that we do not have to rely entirely on the entry fees to make the tourna-ment viable. I will ask the organising committee of Peter Tsai and Trevor Stanning what their thoughts are

It has been some time since I attended a Sunday coaching session but I am amazed by the numbers and the enthusi-asm of the coaches. Nice touch to enter the initials of the coaches in the novice group. Lillian is way in front in the novices She should move up. Gerry

The situation at the top has not
changed a great deal after round 8
Although Leonid and Laurence im-
proved their chances with good
wins Darryl by drawing with Mirko
and losing to Eddy did nothing to
improve his lot. Dusan despite los-
ing to Mirko remains in the best
position on 6.5 with 2 games to
go. Bobby on 7 with one game left.
Leonid of course could also get to
8.5 if he wins all his remaining
games. In fact any one of 2,3 or 4
will win if they win all their remain-
ing games. Individual results are
available on the CV web site

I usually try and get away at this
time of the year and this year will
be no exception. I will be away for
the whole of September and next
week’s issue will be the last one for
awhile. It will be good to get away
as it has been a busy time at the
club with the junior championships,
the senior zonal and the FIDE arbi-
ters semi-
nar. I
thought I
would pub-

These are the standings after round 5. Karl Zelesco is now 2 games behind due to his sojourn in Malasia and of course Marcus his opponent from last night is now also a game behind
This hard fought tournament continued on Tuesday with some further hard fought games. Robert Bartnik stopped the run of Max Chew Lee with a win as black. Marcus Raine versus Karl Zelesco was postponed as Karl is overseas. Enoch Fan and Gus D'on-ofrio was drawn after a difficult rook ending. Bill Jordan won after an exchange sacrifice for a pawn failed to give David sufficient compensa-tion. Octavio Martinez defeated Adam Hayman.

Term 3 Tuesday Coaching
When I first joined the Box Hill Chess Club in the early sixties we met on Friday nights in the ten-nis pavilion in the park at Irving Avenue. Smoking
was then allowed and one often played in a blue
haze of evil smelling tobacco. There were then no tournament with prize money, no national rating systems and no swiss tournaments. Round robins were the only way. The club had one top player double Australian Junior Champion Bill Kerr [who recently rejoined our club] whom I don’t think ever collected prize money.
Be all that as it may, sponsorship then was not obtainable.or even needed It is now We run large tournaments with considerable prize
money, we have big junior programs, we have extensive coaching facilities amongst the best in
the land. We now have a major junior chess or-ganization and we have moved into chess tourna-ments beyond our club role. Like the Vic Open and the Vic Junior Championships. We have just completed the Oceania Senior zonal and a FIDE arbiters seminar with considerable sponsorship from the Asian Chess Federation obtained for us
by Oceania zone president Brian Jones and now the Canterbury and Surrey Hills community branches have become a major sponsor of our
clubs with the encouragement of director Dick Menting. We must keep moving otherwise there will be stagnation and then you die
