Following the war, the group remained intact and continued to support the fire service in various ways. Over the years Box 42, one of three buff clubs in Detroit, undertook projects such as restoration of the DFD Engine 13, a 1908 Ahrens pumper, for use as a show piece, repainting the fire boat, and maintaining the fire museum at the quarters of Engine 11. During past Halloween busy times, members assisted by checking locations of suspected false alarms and providing a presence at quarters while companies were out working for an extended time. In recent years the club's anniversary meetings have been held at Engine 42 to commemorate the place where the club began, and from which the club name was derived. Box 42 Marks 75 Years Such will be the case as the club gathers once again at Engine 42 for its 75th anniversary. Member Anthony Rzucidlo has prepared a commemorative history of the club which he will distribute at the meeting. Following the meeting the group will convene at Los Galanes Restaurant for an annual luncheon. Although the fare will be on one's own, a response is requested of those who expect to attend as indicated above and, as usual, guests are welcome at both the meeting and the restaurant. Do You Know?Bill Kobylarz was Box 42 president in 1972and 1973 and is now living in New Mexico. He raised a question for the old-timers, whicharose while listening to the DFD recordingsfrom the 1967 riot.He asks, What / Who was Disaster Rig 1?The reference to this unit, which wasevidently manned by an engine crew, can beheard in this short clip:

Reader CommentsDFD Deputy Commissioner Dave Fornell sentthis update on rigs:The two light and air units have been deliveredand are at R&R getting upfitted, which we thinkwill be within 30 days. The department had tworelatively unused SCBA fill trailers which wedecided to upgrade to mobile air fill and rescuesupport vehicles. They will have on board aMako diesel powered compressor and 6000-PSIfill system to service companies on the scene ofa fire. A Smartpower 8000-KW hydraulic gener-ator will power a Command Light LED light toweras well as a 200' cable reel. A Super Vac 24"exhaust fan is provided for clearing Haz-Matsituations and providing positive pressureventilation for high-rise and other fire scenes. We are working with the Q-line officials and itappears that they will help us install a 150-lbABC dry chemical system on each rig to provideprotection to the lithium-ion battery powered

street cars. In addition, air lifting bags will becarried to safely raise the 88,000-lb. cars torelease anyone trapped underneath. Final de-ployment locations and SOPs are now in theworks. These rigs are the first to have a complete PowerArc sweep lighting system. These lights weretested on Engine 30 and Engine 33 withoutstanding results. While the rear lights haveamber covers, the sweep is amber but the rearflashing lights show up as red. The folks love thenew system, developed in coordination with theDFFA 744, Joint Health and Safety Committee. From Steve Wilson, manager of the Michigan FireMuseum at YpsilantiThanks much for your newsletter ... great storiesand photos! Please find attached our humblenewsletter for Jan Feb Mar 2017. REALLYappreciated having you folks with us! (To see their newsletter [click here].)From Ted MainGreat Newsletter as usual. During my career withTravelers Insurance in Detroit, I inspectedseveral companies in the Russell IndustrialCenter. The building was originally built in the1920s by Murray Body Company, a majorsupplier of car bodies, fenders and other autocomponents to the major auto manufacturers. The interesting part of the inspections was thatby the time I did the work, Murray had vacatedthe site and various other businesses nowoccupied the structure. A major problem was thatsome of the tenants had occupancy exposuresgreater than the metal working operations ofMurray Body and a fire in those tenants couldexceed the capabilities of the sprinkler systems. Also, the facility maintenance was not up to par. There is an interesting article on Murray Body inGoogle.

From Sharon JeurgensGlad to see the new engines on the road! From John HeppnerThanks for putting me on the Box 42 list. Greatinfo as always. From Greg PearnExcellent as usual. Thank you. From Len WilliamsThanks for another great issue. We also appreciated comments from NancyLee, Carol A. Rosenblum, Richard Story, andJohn Kaled.
