As one of the founding partners of the Love Where You Live
programme, McDonald’s have committed themselves to this programme,
the Love Where You Live is a new campaign that aims to inspire,
encourage and enable us to make where we live, work and play the kind
of place we really want it to be. It's about making a differenceourselves, whether as individuals, groups, local authorities or
companies. It is through this that Bowthorpe Scout Group got involved
and 15 young people from Bowthorpe Cubs, Scouts and Gladiator
Explorers and their leaders litter picked for 4 hours one Saturday
recently on the paths around Cloverhill (focusing on the cycle paths
around Waldegrave). They collected a grand total of 575 kilo’s (just
over half a ton) of litter. In addition to that total we removed from hedges (but did not count as
part of our weigh in) 3 wheelie bins, 2 shopping trollies, a pushchair, a
briefcase, child’s scooter, laundry basket and a video player. We also
recovered two large kitchen knives.
Rebecca Cawdron (Apprentice and People manager of Bradecca
Restaurants) said ”Most importantly, we hope you had fun today and
have had a sense of achievement that you have made a difference towhere we all live.”

Dear Reader
As someone who has lived in Bowthorpe for 26 years and I must say I
can’t imagine living anywhere else, as the cub scout leader for
Bowthorpe Cubs I took part in the ‘Love where you live’ event onSaturday 13th. I was embarrassed to say I live in Bowthorpe, I could
not believe how much rubbish was collected from around the cycle
paths and under the hedgerows it was scary as to how much of the
rubbish was empty beer cans and bottles. I know only recently in
August the new day volunteers worked for 4 days clearing exactly the
same areas.Come on residents of Bowthorpe let’s make a change now, let’s use the
bins that are placed up and down all of the cycle paths in Bowthorpe,
let’s put rubbish where it should be put,
let’s ‘LOVE WHERE WE LIVE’

The Bowthorpe Neighbourhood Team remains focused on reducing anti-social behaviour as the Autumnal nights lengthen. This priority isparticularly pertinent with the Halloween and Bonfire night festivities. Weencourage the safe enjoyment of these events but would like to remindyou that not every person in the community may want to take part. Pleasebe respectful if trick or treating and please be mindful of others whensetting fireworks and bonfires. Please contact our team should you have
any questions or want advice at this time of the year. The Bowthorpe Neighbourhood Team has been increasing patrols in thecommunity. We always welcome ideas on what matters to you. Parkingissues remain a frequently raised concern. Parking, particularly around theschool gates at pick up and drop off time, remains a matter of concern. We hope that the community will continue to be mindful of other roadusers when parking. Please try to avoid parking within ten metres of a
junction because this impedes visibility for other motorists.
We are always keen to hear any ideas for how we can be making apositive difference to the community. You can contact us through our non-emergency number of 101. Or to view our Neighbourhood profile andcrime mapping please access www.safernorfolk.co.uk/you-neighbourhood
and then click on Bowthorpe SNT.
We will be holding the Police Surgeries in the Neighbourhood where youcan come along to speak with your Neighbourhood Policing Team; keepan eye on the Norfolk Police web-site for announcements of the latest

We have tragically seen the fall of two former heroes in recent weeks,
Jimmy Saville and the cyclist Lance Armstrong. Despite all Jimmy Saville did
for charity over the years, he will now be remembered for the allegations of
abuse which have come to light in recent weeks. Lance Armstrong was the
cyclist who battled with and defeated cancer and went on to win the Tourde France a record seven times in a row, yet has now been exposed as
someone who took performance enhancing drugs to win. Both were
considered heroes before their fall from grace.
Heroes are important to us. Heroes are supposed to inspire us. That is why
it is all the more shocking when we discover their frailties and find the
reality of their lives is something very different from the public image they
have presented.
Thankfully there are still heroes, albeit less famous than the two
I have mentioned. In November we particularly remember the
fallen heroes of our armed forces at Remembrance Services up
and down the country and at the Cenotaph in London. These are
men and women who risked their lives in order to save others, heroes who
have recognised that some causes are more important than personal
survival.
Heroes help to shape society by showing us what is really valuable in life.Christians believe that Jesus is the ultimate hero who gave up his life toshow us just how much God loves us. Jesus said, “love oneanother as I have loved you. No-one has greater love than this,to lay down one’s life for his friends” (John 15:12-13). Jesus did
just that. He is a hero we can trust.
Until next month, Mark

Hello again
A month seems to fly by. It seems like only yesterday I was typing
the piece for the October issue and now I’m doing it for theNovember “Bowthorpe News”.
We got into celebration mode and dusted our broomsticks andlooked out our witches’ hats ready for our HHHalloween themedevening on Saturday, 27th October, when Patsy Rose entertained us.We dressed in appropriate fashion for this occasion which also
celebrated 25 years since Ashwell Court was built.
Surrounded by pieces of multi-coloured paper, pots of sparkly colours, silver and gold stars, this was the sceneat the Craft Class last Tuesday It was a fascinating andenjoyable experience to make Christmas cards under Judy’s tuition. Thanks Judy for an unexpectedly
interesting and entertaining afternoon. We are looking forward to thenext session! The Art and Craft Class is held on the 1st and 3rd
Tuesday of each month, after the Tuesday luncheon club.
Following on from this Judy will be having a stall in the CommonRoom at Ashwell Court on Tuesdays and Thursdays to sell some of her amazing collection of beautiful hand-made cards. All are invited
to come in to view and/or purchase. The moneyraised from this venture will all be donated to theNorwich and District Branch of the NormandyVeterans Association to help to raise enoughmoney to take our veterans back to France for the
70th anniversary of D-Day in 2014.
Sadly I have to report the death in hospital of TonyRogers, a long-time and respected resident of AshwellCourt. We send our sympathy to his friends, some of
whom we met on their frequent visits to Tony.
Next month we will already be in the run up to Christmas and looking
forward to another visit by Helen and Michael on the 30th November.
Bye for now.

Hello friends. Here we are again, another month gone
past, and don’t you know Christmas
is get-ting close? The shops are full of thisand that ,and toys everywhere. Childrendon’t have the fun Christmas time we didas children. It’s a shame, but nothing
seem to be the same now.
Well I think you would like to know how we are all getting along at
Bradecroft. Some have been ill, some of our friends have left us, nolonger able to look after themselves. It’s sad, but we will all come to it
someday.
I told you last time that we were going to Yarmouth. Well, it turned outto be a nice trip; the weather was good, and there was quite a lot of
shops and cafes open. I think everyone enjoyed it.
NOW this evening we had a Bingo night. Quite a fewpeople turned out which makes it all worth while.
Now our last trip was on Tuesday the 16th of
October - that was a mystery tour .
So until next time, look after yourselves, keep warm. PAT

How to Dance in the Rain
It was a busy morning, about 8:30, when an elderly gentleman in his 80's arrived tohave stitches removed from his thumb. He said he was in a hurry as he had anappointment at 9:00 am.
While taking care of his wound I asked him if he had another doctor's appointmentthis morning, as he was in such a hurry. The gentleman told me no, that he neededto go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife. I inquired as to her health.
He told me that she had been there for a while and that she was a victim of Alzheimer's disease. As we talked, I asked if she would be upset if he was a bit
late.
He replied that she no longer knew who he was, that she had not recognized him infive years now. I was surprised, and asked him, 'And you still go every morning, even though she doesn't know who you are?' He smiled as he patted my hand and said, 'She doesn't know me, but I still knowwho she is.' I had to hold back tears as he left, I had goose bumps on my arm, and thought, 'That is the kind of love I want in my life.' True love is neither physical, nor romantic. True love is an acceptance of all that is, has been, will be, and will not be.
‘Life isn't about how to survive the storm, but how to dance in the rain.'
(Thanks to Peter Rowley for sending this in.)

JONATHAN TAIWO & MICHAEL LANSDELL MISSION TRIP TO
NIGERIA (AFRICA): A REFLECTIVE ACCOUNT
My name is Jonathan, I am the current Chair of FUN (Families United
of Norwich) and my colleague, Michael Lansdell who travelled with me
on Mission work to the Western part of Nigeria has served as a
community youth officer in Bowthorpe many years back. Some of you
may still well remember him.
Although our volunteering activities are locally based within our
immediate communities, Michael and I have always shared a burden
for Overseas development work. Six months ago, we felt that God was
leading us to go on Mission trip to Nigeria, having received an
invitation from an Apostolic Ministry based in the Western part of Nigeria.
We saw with our own eyes what many who
have visited Nigeria have suggested. A
vast country with rich oil deposits, other
mineral resources and fertile arable land.
Yet, it is an irony that the vast majority of
the population, especially rural dwellers
are languishing in poverty. Many of the
things such as clothes and electrical gadgets we throw away as rubbish
will be 'treasures' to many of the needy families we came across.
We were particularly concerned about the plight of vulnerable families
whose children could not go to school for lack of money and parents
who could not access medical care when ill with Malaria - a deadly
tropical disease spread by mosquito bites. In response to this
challenging situation, our Host Church in Nigeria have started a school
in one of the villages and help is needed to complete the building,
acquire furniture, pay the teachers etc. It costs as little as £10.00 /
month to keep a child in school.
My overseas ministry- GOLEM, is also helping to train local health
workers and local pastors in order to provide basic first aid and health
interventions for members of their communities. I am planning a
further trip to this mission field next year. We are compelled by the
commandment of Jesus to help those who are in need. Our neighboursinclude anyone; regardless of their geographical location.

THANKS FOR STOOKEY BLUE EVENT
As Chair of the St Michael’s Ruin Trust I’d like to say a big thank you toeveryone involved in making our Heritage Open Day ‘Song and Dance’ sucha great success. (As featured in the October issue of this magazine)
We were blessed by fine weather of course but I’m sure all those who camefrom far and near to enjoy the Country Dancing in the morning and the folkmusic and singing in the afternoon would agree they had a great time, thanks to Chris Davis and the Stookey Blue ceilidh band, plus the other singers and musicians who just joined in.
The newly paved front courtyard (with easyaccess from the new steps – thank you SITATrust and Norfolk County Council ) provedideal for dancing, while as ever the gardenbehind the ruin came into its own as a peacefulsetting for music and song in the afternoon, when the ancient walls of St Michael’s framed,as so often happens, the joyful photos of yetanother happy occasion, a local wedding –proving just how versatile a communityresource the ruin can be.
Our thanks are due to our indefatigable
helpers, including Louise, Jenny, Jo, Paul,Sally, John and Trefor, with Chris quietlymarshalling the cyclists as well, and moreformally to good old Norwich City Council for their grant to pay for the musicians. Therefreshments were much appreciated, especially the Rwandan soup provided andserved by Illuminee.
A good time was had by all as our historic
community hub came into its own once more.so thank you, and here’s looking forward toanother year of serving the Bowthorpe
community!

CAN YOU HELP TO
DISTRIBUTE THIS
MAGAZINE?
2 hours, 2 people, one car, and it’s quick, easy and fun I in a car is fairly quick and can be fun 2 people on bikes takes longer and is fun 1 person on a bike takes much longer and can still be fun YOU could commit one Saturday morning a month to doing
something fun and worthwhile for your community by delivering 30 or so bundles of Bowthorpe News to the 30 or so
volunteers in Clover Hill who then put a copy through the doors of
their street.
Chapel Break and Three Score already have it sorted. Clover Hill haD it
sorted but is now in need of A.N.Other distributer. If you’d like to have fun, or even if you’re just happy to grin and bear
it and know you are doing your bit for the Common Good,
please contact
Mary Cubitt [email protected] Or the Editor, as shown above.
