Lives in Focus: Recording oral history interviews on video with Roger

Kitchen, a British Library/Oral History Society-accredited

trainer, Monday 8th April, 10 4.30pm

An introduction to the principles and techniques of recording, editing

and distributing oral history on video. It is aimed at those with

little or no experience and it will take participants through the advantages

and disadvantages of video over audio recordings, give practical advice on

recording techniques, and offer guidance on suitable equipment.

Transcript to Script: Turning oral history into plays for stage and radio

with Rib Davis, a British Library/Oral History Society-accredited

trainer, Thursday 18th April, 10am 4.30pm

This will cover a brief history of the genre and an overview of the various forms

which oral history theatre can take. It will look at the creation of a set of

fictional characters using dialogue, the use of oral history as researchmaterial for scripting, and improvisation around memory without transcript.

Many people ask me why the crime rates in Bowthorpe have recently fallen.Could it be that one person can really make a difference in the community?The honest answer is yes, but together we can achieve so much more.

We have worked hard to act on the information that you have provided to us.And the sheer amount of people offering this information and their supportshows the great sense of community that is unique to Bowthorpe. Illegalvehicles were a concern raised by many in the community. As well as

monitoring misuse of the bus lanes I have also led an operation with theDVLA to address vehicles not displaying valid road tax. Within a week weclamped 52 vehicles in Bowthorpe and the wider area. We will be repeating

this operation.

We also intend to address your growing concerns at the dangerous parkingof vehicles around the schools at peak times. There have been severalreports of vehicles narrowly avoiding an accident because of someone elsespoor parking. My team will be working with the schools to improve theseissues. I take this opportunity to remind you to be considerate to other roadusers when dropping off and collecting children.

We are always keen to hear any ideas for how we can be making a positivedifference to the community. Should you have information please contact usby dialling 101 or through crime stoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

One day a man asked God to give him a glimpse of what heaven and hellwould be like. God agreed and asked an angel to be the mans guide. So

off the two went on their adventure.

The angel took the man into a large room where a cooking pot

was bubbling away over an open fire. It was full of a delicious-

smelling stew. All around the pot was a crowd of people. Butthere was an icy stillness in the room. Each person had a long-handled spoon, with which they were dipping into the pot. However, thepeople looked thin and pale. The problem was that the spoon handles were

so long that no-one could get the food from the spoon into their mouths.

The two left the room and the man commented what a strange place it was.That was hell, replied the angel, who proceeded to take his guest into asecond room. The second room looked just like the first. There was a firewith a pot of delicious stew bubbling away on it. People sat around the fireholding the same long-handled spoons in their hands. Unlike the first room,

the second room was full of chatter and laughter.

The angel took the man out and asked, Did you notice the differencebetween the two rooms? Unlike the first room, in the second room thepeople werent trying to feed themselves with the long-handled spoons.

They were using the spoons to feed each other! That was heaven!

Doing kind deeds for others and serving them is a way of bringing a little bitof heaven to earth. St. Paul reminds us to `be kind and compassionate.

And Jesus said, `Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must loveone another. This month why dont you be an angel and do somethingkind, compassionate and loving forsomeone else and bring a little bit of

heaven into their life.

COSTESSEY CARERS

Every so often you feel that you have hit the jackpot, it does not happen

very often but when it does you sure feel good! That was the feeling at our

March meeting when we had four new members come along to our

meeting. We were able to give our advice and information to enable them to

find and obtain the benefits and services to make life that little bit easier for

them and their Cared For The slide show and humorous talk on "The

Muffin Man" was a hark back to the old street traders and their cries as

they journeyed around seeking trade, vividly remembered by quite a few of

us older ones.

Looking forward to April we have an interesting scenic and popular holidaydestination of Switzerland talk and film show. This is followed in May by

"The Gurkhas and their welfare trust".

Our meetings held at The Costessey Community Centre in Longwater Lane

are always on the first Wednesday of each month with an interesting talk,

social interaction over a cup of tea or coffee, free advice in a friendly

atmosphere. Why not come along and give us a look? We must be doing

something right as we are in our eleventh year.

In June from Monday 10th is the annual national Carers Week when on the

Thursday or Friday at the Costessey Community Centre the Norwich and

District Carers Council will be staging an open information day with stalls by

all the leading charities and organisations with leaflets, advice and

information freely available. Why not make a note inyour diary? We have

members from all around Norwich, you do not have to be a Costessey

resident to come and enjoy our friendship.

COUNTY COUNCIL ELECTIONS MAY 2ND 2013

CANDIDATE PROFILES

FELICITY HARTLEY, LIBERAL DEMOCRAT

Felicity has lived in Norwich forover 20 years. Aftermoving to Norfolk in 1975to work as an administrator atthe University of East Anglia before leaving to bring up herfamily.

She was a member of the City Council for 10 years andwas Lord Mayor from 2006 - 7 with her son Chris, who haslearning difficulties, as her Consort.

Felicity was a member of the City Council Cabinet for twoyearswhere she helda portfolio for Culture and OrganisationaL Development.

She has taken a particular interest in Health and Social Care issues for manyyears and was a Non Executive member of Norwich Primary Care Trust from2001 to 2006 and is currently Vice Chair of Norfolk Carers' Support where she isworking to see that Carers will continue to receiveadequate services, despitecuts to County Council support.

Felicity is also currently working on fund raising for the Norwich Historic ChurchesTrust.

In her spare time she enjoys going to the theatre and the cinema and cooking forfriends and family.

JEAN BISHOP, GREEN PARTY

Jean is passionate about cycling, allotmenting, wildlifeand the natural world. She is also passionate aboutprotecting the NHS and retaining vital services forelderly and vulnerable people.

As a Green Party councillor she would like to worktowards a more equal society with fair taxation andgreater job opportunities for young people.

Jean, with her partner, Bob, has lived and worked in Norwich for the best part of40 years. Together they run their own business in the horticultural industry, andhave done so for the past three decades. Jean is delighted to live in a city withthe largest percentage of Green councillors anywhere in the country.

She feels this provides hope for the future in achieving a fairer and moresustainable society to pass on to future generations.

Along with my family, and my Airedale Jack, weve beenresidents of Bowthorpe since Easter 2002. I am a City Councillorfor Bowthorpe ensuring that our villages are well represented inCity Council. Now as candidate for County Council, this

enhanced role should I be elected, will enable me to furtherpromote the needs, interests and concerns of our residents; withall of your councillors working as a team.

The friendly and supportive community have made Bowthorpe agreat place to put down roots. The sense of community encouraged involvementof my wife Sue and I in Bowthorpe Community Projects and Local Politics. WithThree Score to be further developed I wanted to try to ensure along with theCommunity that we had the best of all possible options within the constraintsimposed.

Ive been concerned at the global financial crisis brought about by the banksand the socially divisive policies of the current Westminster Government and theimpact of these upon jobs and housing in our community and the educationaloutcomes and opportunities for our children. I will continue to fight for social

justice and for our community locally.

PAUL WELLS, CONSERVATIVE

I live locally, in Chapel Break, and am passionate aboutimproving our local community. I am a local schoolgovernor and am involved in many community groups.

Over the recent years we have been weathering aserious economic crisis and under the Conservativeadministration,Norfolk has done well in protectingservicessuch asour mobile library here in Bowthorpe,whilst continuing to invest in infrastructure,such as better

broadband,as well as

spending millions

to

create

new

apprenticeships. This record is even more impressive when you consider thatNorfolk Conservatives have managed to freeze our council tax for the last threeyears. Bowthorpe needs a strong voice in Norfolk and I have the experience toeffectively fight to defend our interests.

If re-elected I want to focus on improving our road network, too many roads are inneed of repair, even some which have been recently re-surfaced, and ensure thatthe Council remains focused on improving the opportunities for everyone in Norfolkyoungandold. We need to ensure that local schools are encouraged not criticised

Hello again,

Another month gone by, what

dreadful weather we are having!

Could this mean we will have a nice

warm summer?I sincerely hope so.

Well, I told you last month all about

our Summer trips, now this month we

started off with a free Bingo night March the 7th. We are planning one

evening each month, films , beetle drive etc, so something to look

forward to.

Good news is one of the newest residents has offered his help with the

organizing of the events. This will help as it takes up quite a lot of time.

One person has been doing it for sometime, and one lady has been

keeping the books and making a good job of it. THANK YOU BOTH. I

hope the extra help will lighten the load. We are all getting older each year.

Well, we are to have an evening party here on the 1st of

April. Everyone contributes the food, and then

entertainment after, singing, dancing, and whatever else

one thinks of, so lets put the Winter weather behind us

and enjoy our selves.

Hello again, Several weeks have

passed since I wrote the last piece forthe Bowthorpe News but outsidenothing has altered. There is stillsnow on the ground and it is stillbitterly cold. However the weathermust improve soon and we will have a

lovely spring, I hope.

Activities here have continued. Wehad a lovely evening of songs with Pat

James on 15th

February and lookedforward to entertainment with DickHigh in March.

On a sad note, we have unfortunatelylost one of our most popular and well-respected residents. Mrs June Haweswho lived here with her husband,Leon, went into hospital in February

and unfortunately passed away. Our deepest sympathy to Leon,her husband, and to the rest of her family. She will be sadlymissed for her lovely smile and her friendliness. RIP June, we will

miss you.

We have all been lucky enough to have our heating systemsupgradcd and we now have very efficient new storage heaters and lovelymodern fires with imitation coal or logs and flames which flicker and lookreal. It is so warm indoors and so cold outside that I cannot wait to get

home when I go out!

holding its breath until the flowers

start to dance. Snowdrops and

Dandelions have kept the show going for

a couple of months now.

Celandine are poised to flood the way-

side ditches, and the scent of theSweet Violet is about to waft forth.

We had so much fun we did cra, nger pup-

pets, made kites, made placemats, we cooked

bananas on a re and we sang camp re songs,

my favourite song was Alice The Camel. I have

to admit we did not get much sleep the day

aer I was aiming to get up at 12pm, my plan

did not work because my mum woke me up or

should I say tried to wake me up at 7:30am so

not fair. LeahAt pack holiday it was fun we had

lots of acvies and loads of food,

we went on lots of adventures and

trails. Saturday night Sue and Amy

made a campre for all of he

chocolate buons in it and

wrapped in foil put them in the

re to melt and then we ate them.

News from St Michaels VA Junior School.

Sarah Claflin - Senior Leader

Charitable attitudes:Children have been taking part in the St Michaels Earth Month and the

World Wildlife Fund (WWF) If you do, I will campaign. This has involved

children collecting WWF tokens as rewards for turning projectors off,

recycling paper and putting rubbish in the bins etc. If they collect an

agreed amount of tokens, as a class, then their teachers will do

something for them e.g. throw an Earth party etc. The children have been

really inspired to help look after the environment.

Further to this, children have decided to raise money for World DownSyndrome Day and Comic Relief. Look out for what went on in the next

issue of the Bowthorpe News.

Gorilla ArtSt Michaels children,

with a particular flair

for art, have been

painting a Gorilla sculpture for our

school. Once completed, this will

appear in Norwich with other

childrens Gorillas. We look forward

to seeing the completed Gorilla!

Enterprise FayreYear six organised a Enterprise

Fayre, where all classes across the

school sold their products for their

enterprise project. The event was

very successful and we

would like to

congratulate year six ona job well done!

W o r l d B o o k D a yIt was wonderful to see all the

children dressed up as book

characters throughout theday. The children really got

into character and

the spirit of the day.

Competitive SpiritTo further celebrate

world book day, children took

part in a Spelling Bee.

Congratulations to Chloe (Y3),

Tyronne (Y4), Kimberly (Y5) and

Abigail (Y6) who represented

their year and won. Well done to

the runners up who competed

admirably.
