Our New CampusThe College’s new campus opened its doors to students in September 2011, attracting a lot of publicity locally and nationally. 6 years in the planning, the new building is one of the UK’s most technologically advanced colleges, featuring a broad range of facilities and equipment designed to deliver training and education to a broad range of students from across the region and the globe. Playing host to up to 15,000 part time and full time students, the new campus boasts facilities amongst the best in the country, including a fitness suite, restaurant, cinema, kitchens, hair and beauty salons, art and music studios, science labs, motor vehicle and construction workshops and more. The official launch took place on 26th October 2011 and saw senior officials, local government delegates and over 500 VIP guests join with the staff of Bournville College to celebrate the launch of the £66 million campus. The event gave those who had been involved in the new build an opportunity to witness the magnitude of the facility in its full glory. Delegates, many of which travelled from as far as India, Brazil, Korea and the Philippines, were treated to a full evening of entertainment which included speeches from Principal, Norman Cave, Chair of Governors Howard Saycell and a keynote from TV personality and radio star Chris Tarrant.

INTERNATIONAL DIMENSIONIt was another record breaking year for international work at Bournville College. The tone was set in September with a major project with Italy, which saw over 200 students visit the College on a variety of progammes encompassing English, work experience and special projects. The work with South Korea continued, making Bournville the number one destination for students from that rapidly developing and enterprising country, where we now have a relationship with 20 colleges as partner in the national GWTP scheme. In November, the College’s commitment to India was demonstrated with the official launch of Bournville Training and Consultancy Pvt Ltd in Kolkata. Since then, our Indian subsidiary has gained high profile partners such as Globsyn and Centum Learning and in collaboration with IIIM has already won high profile government projects.March witnessed another successful launch, this time of our Malaysia office in Kuala Lumpur by the Director of UKTI, Tony Collingridge, further expanding the College’s network in South East Asia. Our strategic partnerships were forged even further in May when we signed an official agreement with University of London – International Programmes to offer the University’s degrees. The agreement will give international students a chance to study in the supportive learning environment at Bournville College whilst being able to obtain a degree awarded by such a prestigious university.

Student Success StoryA student from Bournville College has won a regional award for his achievement.Thirty five year old Lyndon Lonsdale from Kings Norton was chosen by the Open College Network as a winner of an Access to Higher Education Learner Award. Lyndon left school over twenty years ago with no qualifications, moving between jobs before joining the Army in 2000. He was posted to Iraq and medically discharged three years later for a benign essential tremor. It was on his return to the UK that Lyndon started thinking about going back to education. ‘People have been telling me for years to go to college but the thought of it terrified me. I didn’t think I had the confidence, didn’t think I’d get a place on a course, let alone pass any tests or coursework. When I finally got the courage, I found Bournville College staff extremely helpful.’ Lyndon said. Lyndon was interested in computing as a career and he started by improving his English and Maths skills first. This course helped him prepare for the entrance test for Access to Higher Education – Computing Diploma, which he completed in June 2012. He’s now studying BSc in Computing Science at Birmingham City University.‘At first I found it hard work because I hadn’t studied for over twenty years. I felt embarrassed about starting college due to my age. When I started passing units, I realised I was capable of passing the course and getting a place at University. The difference the course has made to my life is tremendous. I have more confidence in my own ability and I’m thankful to my tutors and the college staff for helping me. Without them, I think I would still be moving from different jobs without a real purpose or future. I feel that I’m finally doing something for myself but it will also benefit my family’s future.’ He added. Denis Lacy, Lyndon’s tutor, said: ‘We are extremely proud of Lyndon; he has worked hard on his course and is a worthy winner of this award. Lyndon is a true inspiration to adults everywhere – with a little bit of determination you really can follow your dreams.’

Employer Success StoryBournville College expanded its partnership with Birmingham Children’s Hospital by offering an AMSPAR Advanced Diploma for Medical Secretaries to hospital administration staff.

The College already had a longstanding relationship with the Hospital, offering training packages such as Apprenticeships in Health and Business Administration, Customer Service and Theatre Cadets, NVQs in Management, Business Administration, Customer Service, Health and Social Care as well as bespoke courses in IT, Medical Terminology, Minute Taking, Train the Trainer and Dyslexia Awareness.

Samantha Markham, 38, from Bedworth is one of the learners benefitting from the AMSPAR Level 3 course. She has since started a new job as PA to Theatre Management. ‘I had thought about completing the AMSPAR course for a while and I was grateful when the opportunity came up. I have really enjoyed the course so far and within my new role, the course has helped me develop and will be beneficial to me in the future.’ Sam said.

Mandy Sankey, Sam’s Manager, commented: ‘Sam was keen to undertake further education but due to the lack of previous exposure to formal education, she was wary about her capability in succeeding at this level. However the support within the Bournville College facility made an early positive impact with Sam and she has not only passed each module very well, she has thoroughly enjoyed the experience. And the benefit to our service is that we now have an appropriately trained, motivated, confident and efficient Administrator within our team.’

At the heart of the communityThe College has always had a strong community focus and following our move to Longbridge this has continued to grow. Around seventy new jobs have been created in 2011/12, contributing to the revival of the local area. The College has also worked closely with West Midlands Special Needs Transport to improve transport links for students and local community by adding two new routes from Quinton and Bromsgrove.

Over forty community groups have benefited from training by Bournville College, which has been delivered at their premises, most notably in children’s centres, day centres, charities and schools. 447 learners completed courses in a variety of subjects, including IT, Art, Cooking, Assertion and Stress Management, Understanding Teenagers, Community Volunteers, Helping out in School and many more. All of these courses have been organised to meet the needs of the local community and many learners have since progressed to the College, achieving nationally recognised qualifications.

The College also works closely with JobCentrePlus and Birmingham City Council Employment and Access Team to deliver programmes for recently redundant, short and long-term unemployed candidates. In 2011/12, over 1,500 candidates benefited from tailor-made training programmes and most of them gained sustained employment in a range of sectors.

One of the companies benefiting from this programme is Care through the Millennium (CttM), who run homes providing specialised healthcare and rehabilitation services for adults with learning disabilities, mental health and neurodisability needs. Since 2009 the College has placed over 150 candidates with CttM, some of whom have gained promotion into management levels. Plans for the new year include the appointment of apprentices and ‘skills for life’ programmes for service users.
