BOULDER MED TECH HF/UX MEETUP
TONIGHT’S DESIGN PROJECT
▸ Background
▸ Anxiety affects 40M American adults a year—18% of the population— causing inefficiencies in the workplace and a reduced sense of life satisfaction.
▸ Source: National Institute of Mental Health, 2015: http://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/statistics/prevalence/any-anxiety-disorder-among-adults.shtml
▸ Serotonin is a neurotransmitter primarily found in the gastrointestinal tract, blood platelets, and the central nervous system of animals, including humans.
▸ Reduced levels of serotonin have been linked to symptoms of anxiety within humans.
▸ A break-through optical-based technology has been devised by MellowTech to measure levels of serotonin in the brain using minute volumes of saliva.
▸ Business Opportunity
▸ The ability to quickly and inexpensively measure levels of serotonin in adult patients offers the chance to intervene in a timely manner, reducing anxiety and the consequential effects.

TONIGHT’S DESIGN PROJECT
▸ Requirements:
▸ Hand-held medical device for home use by teenagers and adults
▸ Requires no more than 100ul of saliva
▸ Simple and ‘error-resistant’ operation for untrained operators (CLIA-waived medical device)
▸ No-text, should be a graphics-rich UI
▸ Minimal 4 step process
▸ Insert test strip into device
▸ Tongue-touch saliva sample onto test strip
▸ 30 second to displayed result
▸ Eject & dispose of test strip (avoid cross-contamination)
▸ Results should be displayed as a single number, 0-99 'sero-units’, 50 sero-units is the threshold below which the level is considered ‘clinically low’
▸ Device can also display historic data (30 days) for trending purposes

▸ More Requirements:
▸ Sealed-in rechargeable battery with 8 hour capability at 20% duty cycle, ‘wall-wart’ power supply
▸ Unit cost to consumer: $40 (Cost of goods sold, COGS<$10)
▸ Cost per test to consumer: $1 (COGS< $0.10)
▸ Units to be sold in US, Canada, and Japan only for initial launch)

RESEARCH (OR KNOW THY USERS)
▸ Who is going to use this?
▸ Consider: Age, Sex, Education, Medical Conditions, Limitations
▸ Where are they going to use this?
▸ Consider: Environment, Other People
▸ How are they going to use this?
▸ Consider: Frequency of use, workflow, where they store the device it when not in use

RESEARCH TECHNIQUES
▸ Observations / Contextual Inquiries
▸ Interviews
▸ Focus Groups
▸ Customer Feedback / Complaints
▸ Surveys
▸ Marketing Data / Competitive Analysis

DESIGN GOALS / REQUIREMENTS
▸ Safety - ex. the product won’t hurt the patient
▸ Efficiency - ex. the user can meet their goal in under 5 tasks/steps
▸ Learnable - ex. the user can accomplish task A after 10 minutes of training
▸ Error Free - ex. 80% of users can complete task A without making a mistake
▸ Memorable - ex. the user can use it a 2nd time without making a mistake
▸ Satisfaction - ex. the user says the product is enjoyable to use

DESIGN PRINCIPLES
▸ Patient Safety first
▸ Know who you are designing for
▸ Keep it simple
▸ Make it easy to learn
▸ Prioritize the data and tasks
▸ Be consistent
▸ Make it so users want to use the product

DESIGN EVALUATION/TESTING
▸ Have you met your design goals?
▸ Is it usable for the target users?
▸ Where could the design be improved?

USABILITY TESTING
▸ Plan what you want to evaluate
▸ Which tasks are the most critical?
▸ Write down a script to test those tasks
▸ Identify and recruit the target users to test the product with
▸ Do a practice run
▸ Test!
