FoundationF1RacingAs the MEGA School drew to a close on

Wednesday, November 12, it was time for the Foundation’s annual fundraising event. Instead of the traditional Foundation Golf Tournament, this year’s supporters strapped on helmets and sped off around the largest indoor kart track in the United States. F1 Racing Boston, the state-of-the-art facility that has hosted such racing greats as Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Jeff Gordon, was the site of this year’s tournament and the competition between the 66 drivers in the Le Mans-style Endurance Race was fierce. Congratulations to the following teams:

DHIMEGASchoolKicking off the week’s events was the DHI MEGA School. As you’ll read in the education wrap up article on page 42, this year’s national school was a huge success with record attendance levels and positive feedback from a number of students.

When talking with one DAI 600—Fire Door Assembly Inspection student, Dan Bernier, CML, CPS, he spoke highly of the class he had just attended (and successfully passed). Bernier commented that the class was well structured, very succinct, and at the same time moved at quite a quick pace. Not only did he enjoy the class, he was also impressed with the mixture of the instructors and their diverse perspectives.

One tip Bernier is happy to pass on to future DAI 600 students—“You better do your homework!”

ForumfortheFutureLast year’s Forum coincided

with the launch of DHI’s new Fire Door Assembly Inspection or FDAI program and focused on the insurance, staffing, marketing and financial ramifications of becoming involved with this new initiative. This year, attendees learned more about the progress being made with this program and how individual stakeholders have taken steps to make sure they understand, and are able to comply with, this new standard.

Included on this year’s distin-guished panel of speakers was New York Deputy Fire Chief and Campus Fire Safety board member Paul Martin. There have been several key pieces of Federal legislation that have been passed recently address-ing campus fire safety issues and Martin explained what role our industry will play in educating the AHJs whose job it is to enforce these new laws.

“Education is going to be a huge part of solving the problems we see in the installation and maintenance of fire doors in schools across the country,” said Martin. “I think there’s a tremendous future for you

folks in the education arena.”Weren’t able to attend this

year’s event? Be sure to visit the Foundation’s Web site at www.lifesafetysecurity.org for more infor-mation on the Foundation’s latest initiatives.

OpeningCeremonyDHI President Doug Gerbing,

AHC, cut the ribbon Thursday evening to open this year’s exposi-tion. This annual event was followed by a reception on the show floor sponsored by ASSA ABLOY that gave attendees a chance to network, socialize and get their first glimpse of the expansive exhibitor display booths.

“This show is just a great oppor-tunity for us to meet with custom-ers,” said Brendan Daley of Horner Commercial Sales. “We get to have that personal, one on one interaction that you can’t have anywhere else.”

IndustryMarketplaceOn Friday morning, conference

exhibitors discussed the state of the industry and the economy as well as future plans and products with attendees at the Industry Marketplace, which offered manu-facturers the opportunity to meet with distributors and sales agents in a structured environment away from the tradeshow floor.

“We had an excellent session,”

Page 4: Boston - DHI · Brian Messina, Kamco Supply Corp of Boston Ken McNamara, Kelley Bros. Dwight Balser, Kelley Bros. ... Door Assembly Inspection or FDAI program and focused on the insurance,

said Christopher Beebe of Door Security Solutions of NE. “There was a really great turnout—stand-ing room only!”

One of the most popular sessions offered this year was a course offered specifically for architects and specifiers on what changes have been made to the Massachusetts Building Code.

“Lori Greene did a wonderful job of distilling all the revisions of the code documents and present-ing them in a way that’s easy to understand,” said Craig Chabot, AHC/CDC.

“She’s very professional,” agreed Ron Roberge of Solomon & Bauer. “With a new code coming out, this has been very helpful.”

After the Industry Marketplaces sessions ended, attendees filed out onto the exhibit hall floor to meet with exhibitors and enjoy the complimentary networking lunch sponsored by Akron Hardware.

ChapterLeadershipMeetingatConference

For the third year in a row, DHI chapter officers and future leaders gathered on Friday for a Chapter Leadership meeting at DHI’s Annual Conference and Exposition. Over 45 leaders partici-pated in DHI Director of Education and Certification Keith Pardoe’s,

DAHC/CDC, CDT, discus-sion about DHI Education and the changes that are being made to the program. Immediately following Keith’s presentation, DHI President, Doug Gerbing, AHC, FDHI, CSI and President-Elect, Scott Sabatini, AOC, CSI, CCPR, were proud to present Particip-ACTION plaques to the 19 chapters who earned 250 or more points within the competi-tion. DHICanadaNightFriday evening is typically reserved for exhibitors to host

their own private parties and events for attendees. This year, DHI Canada hosted an event of their own and had quite a turnout with over 300 people in attendance. There was even a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer standing guard at the entryway door to welcome guests as they arrived. He was gracious enough to pose for pictures with anyone who asked and his friendliness certainly set the tone for the evening’s revelry.

AwardsCeremonyAfter a lively evening of social gatherings and networking

events on Friday night, attendees had a delicious breakfast waiting for them on Saturday morning at the Annual DHI Award & Keynote Breakfast. This complimentary event was open to all attendees and a large crowd turned out to hear presentations by DHI leadership on the state of the associa-tion and the industry at large.

The Industry Awards ceremony followed, honoring the incredible men and women who have donated their time and energy to the association’s efforts. Congratulations to all of this year’s winners. Your efforts are what make this associa-tion successful!

After the awards ceremony was completed, keynote speaker Ken Schmidt took the stage. As the driv-ing force behind Harley Davidson’s dramatic turnaround from near bank-ruptcy to one of the most recognizable symbols of American culture today, Ken had some incredibly timely infor-mation for business owners to incor-porate into their business practices. Weren’t able to attend? Here are some of the highlights:

“Life has been reduced to a continu-ous cycle of wholly unmemorable transactions. You can change your business by becoming more human in your approach.”

“We are not a rational and logical species. People make decisions based on beliefs and feelings. We are all driven by our own innate sense of self-worth.”

“What kind of language do your customers use to describe your busi-ness? Be aware of what type language you use because any time you use the language of business, people stop listening.”

“We do what the boss does, not what the boss tells us to do. Your employees are watching what you do.”

His main point was that passion is the most attractive human trait and if you are passionate about your prod-ucts or services, your customers will respond to that passion in kind.

At the close of the keynote session, the attendees filed out into the Exhibit Hall for one last look at the exhibitor’s wares and a chance to win one of DHI’s door Prizes. This year’s lucky winners were as follows:

DHI would like to recognize many of our 2008 Boston Conference and Exposition Exhibitors for their long standing commitment to this event

and our industry. Through their continued participation by displaying their products and services to attendees, they confirm the importance

of this annual gathering of the key industry players. They value the opportunity for face to face business meetings, whether demonstrating

products to industry professionals or discussing mutually beneficial strategies with their channel partners. This opportunity comes only once

each year at our industry’s only gathering, and they invest significantly to be there as an Exhibitor. Please thank them for their participation and

support when you correspond with them sometime soon.

For 33 consecutive years, since 1976, we have held this event, and many have participated in every one of them. Below is a list of the 2008

exhibiting companies with (5) or more total year’s participation.
