2006 Eagles 2006 OUTLOOK

Coming off a second-place finish at the 2005 Big East Champion-ships followed by a strong fall campaign, the Boston Collegerowing team has a variety of reasons to be optimistic in the springof 2006. In BC’s first year of ACC rowing competition, the Eagles’spring schedule is highlighted by three fast championship regattas– the ECAC/Metro Championships, the ACC Championships andthe EAWRC Championships (the Women’s Eastern Sprints).

Seventh-year head coach Steve Fiske hopes that the veteranleadership from BC’s five seniors and 12 juniors will jump start theEagles in their new conference.

“The second-place finish was a nice accomplishment, and it wasgood to go out of the Big East with our highest finish,” said Fiske, who earned Big East Coach of the Year honors in 2005.

The 2006 team features five seniors, including co-captains SarahBurns and Elizabeth Millar. Last year, Burns helped lead the secondvarsity eight to a first-place finish in the Knecht Cup and secondplace at the Big East Championships. Millar has rowed in thevarsity eight in each of her previous three years at the Heights.

“Liz Millar has been a key member of the program since she’s beenhere,” Fiske said. “She’s working hard, and she was in the varsityeight this fall. We are expecting good things from her. Similarly,Sarah Burns has been a strong rower and become a good leader.”

Kate Donovan, Lauren Ferrara and Katie Rankin round out theteam’s five seniors and all made important contributions to the2005 team’s success. Donovan has been an exceptional leader ascoxswain of the varsity eight, and Ferrara coxed BC’s second varsityeight, leading the boat to “Crew of the Year” honors. Rankin hashad success in both the second varsity eight and varsity four in thepast, and the senior looks to challenge for a seat in the varsity eightthis spring.

Among the Eagles’ biggest reasons for optimism lies with theteam’s 11 returning juniors. Claire Arpin and Bridget Regan bothrowed in the varsity eight last season and look to challenge forseats in the varsity eight this spring.

“In terms of building from last year, I think we hada phenomenal sophomore class,” Fiske said.“They’re juniors now and they’re getting faster.Bridget was in the varsity eight last year and hasbeen one of our team leaders this year. She andClaire will be two of our key members.”

The rowing program has welcomed a host of walk-on novice rowers under the guidance of first-yearassistant coach Wendy Wilbur. With 18 novicerowers on the squad, BC has added significantdepth that should improve the team beyond 2006.In December 2005, the rowing program inked fourhigh school rowers to national letters of intent.

“It’s important to realize that the future looksbright,” Wilbur said. “For the first time, we havesigned recruits that are coming in for next year.

We have a really strong walk-on novice team that started inSeptember. They are pushing the varsity team to get faster, andthey are doing really well.”

BC’s upperclassmen will lead the rowing program into the ACC, aconference that now features six rowing teams – Boston College,Clemson, Duke, Miami, North Carolina and Virginia. Duke andVirginia have both competed in the NCAA Championships, withVirginia finishing second in the 2005 NCAA Championships.

“We are really looking forward to the ACC Championships,” Fiskesaid. “Virginia has been one of the fastest programs in thecountry, and Duke, Clemson, Miami and North Carolina are allstrong programs. We can’t wait to get started.”

BC will get its first taste of ACC competition in the spring seasonopener at Clemson on Saturday, March 11 – the culmination ofBC’s spring break trip to Lake Hartwell. In a race that Fiskedescribes as a “one-shot deal,” the Eagles will compete in theACC Championships on Saturday, April 22, at Lake Hartwell inClemson, S.C.

On Sunday, May 14, the rowing team races in its season-culminat-ing race, the Eastern Sprints at the Cooper River in Camden, N.J.“Our regular-season races are very important for seeding at theEastern Sprints,” Fiske said. “We race against six or seven EasternSprint programs throughout the course of the season. Earning agood seed at Sprints is really important.”

BC’s spring date in the Eastern Sprints, also known as the EAWRCChampionships, marks the program’s third-straight invitation to therace. “The past two years, we were invited to Eastern Sprintsbased on our speed during the regular season. This fall, we werethrilled to be voted in as probationary members of the league forthe next two years. This race has more tradition than any other inwomen’s rowing and is a great fit for BC. It gives our athletes achance to race for an invitation to the NCAAs.”

Consistency. It’s the mark of true excellence in any endeavor. However, in today’s intercollegiate athletics, competition has become sobalanced and so competitive that it is virtually impossible to maintain a high level of consistency.

Yet, the Atlantic Coast Conference has defied the odds. Now in its 53rd year of competition, the ACC has long enjoyed the reputation asone of the strongest and most competitive intercollegiate conferences in the nation. And that is not mere conjecture, the numberssupport it.

Since the league’s inception in 1953, ACC schools have captured 94 national championships, including 49 in women’s competition and 45in men’s. In addition, NCAA individual titles have gone to ACC student-athletes 120 times in men’s competition and 60 times in women’saction.

A HISTORYA HISTORYA HISTORYA HISTORYA HISTORY

The ACC was founded on May 8, 1953, at the Sedgefield Inn near Greensboro, N.C., with seven charter members – Clemson, Duke,Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina, and Wake Forest – drawing up the conference bylaws.

The withdrawal of seven schools from the Southern Conference came early on the morning of May 8, 1953, during the SouthernConference’s annual spring meeting. On June 14, 1953, the seven members met in Raleigh, N.C., where a set of bylaws was adopted andthe name officially became the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Suggestions from fans for the name of the new conference appeared in the region’s newspapers prior to the meeting in Raleigh. Some ofthe names suggested were: Dixie, Mid South, Mid Atlantic, East Coast, Seaboard, Colonial, Tobacco, Blue-Gray, Piedmont, SouthernSeven, and the Shoreline.

Duke’s Eddie Cameron recommended that the name of the conference be the Atlantic Coast Conference, and the motion was passedunanimously. The meeting concluded with each member institution assessed $200,000 to pay for conference expenses.

On December 4, 1953, conference officials met against at Sedgefield and officially admitted the University of Virginia as the league’seighth member. The first, and only, withdrawal of a school from the ACC came on June 30, 1971, when the University of South Carolinatendered its resignation.

The ACC operated with seven members until April 3, 1978, when the Georgia Institute of Technology was admitted. The Atlanta schoolhad withdrawn from the Southeastern Conference in January of 1964.

The ACC expanded to nine members on July 1, 1991 with the addition on Florida State University.

Through its first seven decades, it remained an exclusively liberal arts institution with emphasis on the Greek and Latin classics,English and modern languages, and philosophy and religion.

Originally located on Harrison Avenue in Boston’s SouthEnd, where it shared quarters with Boston College HighSchool, the University outgrew its urban setting towardthe end of its first 50 years. Gasson, known at the timeas the Recitation Building, opened in March 1913. Thethree other buildings that would form the core of thecampus St. Mary’s Hall, Devlin Hall, and Bapst Library opened in 1917, 1924, and 1928, respectively.

During the 1940s, new purchases doubled the size of themain campus. In 1974, Boston College acquired NewtonCollege of the Sacred Heart, 1.5 miles away. With 15buildings on 40 acres, it is now the site of the LawSchool and residence halls housing more than 800students.
