  • 2Introduction to the BOSS Venturi Commissioning Valve

The BOSS Venturi has been developed from proven technology by the Broen Valve Group which has been an ISO registered company since1991. The BOSS Venturi offers a unique solution to commissioning the modern heating & chilled water system. The concepts incorporatedinto the BOSS Venturi provide significant benefits to consultants, contractors and commissioning engineers enabling systems to bedesigned, installed and handed over without complications.

The heart of the BOSS Venturi valve is the fixed orifice Venturi which is integrated into all BOSS Venturi commissioning stations. Firstdemonstrated more than 200 years ago, the principal of the Venturi is to accelerate the water through a waisted orifice which increases thevelocity of the flow and the pressure differential, proportionally amplifying the signal generated. The signal from a Venturi can be increased ordecreased by enlarging or reducing the waisted orifice in relationship to the pipe diameter (Beta Ratio). The benefit of the Venturi over thetraditional orifice plate is that the signal developed is not a direct loss. Significant pressure drop is recovered after the water has passedthrough the Venturi nozzle.

The DZR brass BOSS Venturi uses a quarter turn ball valve for isolation and a needle valve for regulation housed with the same body. Thisdesign feature enables the valve to be used for isolation purposes without altering the setting of the regulating needle. In addition to beingeasier to regulate and isolate the BOSS Venturi is also easier to install and operate.

All commissioning stations require a certain length of straight pipe line, excluding fittings, upstream of the valve to ensure non-turbulent orlaminar flow. This length varies between five & ten pipe diameters depending on the manufacturers recommended guidelines. E.g. if the valveis 50mm NB the length of pipe required is between 250 & 500mm. This dimension is increased if the valve is fitted immediately after a pump. Some commissioning stations also require a downstream straight length.

BOSS Venturi technology means that, except for immediately after a pump, no straight lengths of pipe are required up or downstream of thevalve. This is with the exception of the short pattern steel BOSS Butterfly Venturi valve. BOSS Venturi is easy to use because the uniquedesign enables it to be installed in any orientation.

Benefits Regulation, Isolation and flow measurement in one single unit. Measurement across a Venturi nozzle Flow measurement better than +/-3% Same measuring accuracy across the entire measuring area from

1kPa 100kPa Regulation setting remains unchanged when isolated Can be installed in any orientation. Valve information visible when insulated No requirements for straight pipe lengths either up or downstream Suitable for connection to steel, copper & can be adapted for

  • 3ConclusionThe BOSS Venturi valve (FODRV) can be regulated without influencing the measurement accuracy. It is difficult to adjust traditional globetype balancing valves and take flow measurements at the same time because the Kvs value changes with every change in the setting. Wherethe globe type valve has a reduced opening the accuracy is poor compared to when the valve is fully open. This accuracy can be between+/-5% to +/-15% depending upon how far open/closed the valve is. The BOSS Venturi operates at an accuracy level of +/-3%.

Design of the Venturi Groove SystemThe BOSS Venturi has been designed for installation in any orientation. This feature has been possible due to the creation of twoindependent chambers surrounding the Venturi cartridge. Two pilot holes from the high & low pressure sides of the Venturi feed the pressuredifferential information into the chambers, on the outside of which are located the test points. The pilot holes from the Venturi to themeasuring chamber are positioned opposite each other. This unique attribute provides the ability to measure the signal even if one hole isblocked by debris.

Comparison Between A Variable Orifice DRV & The BOSS Venturi

Measurement is not affected by debris in the VenturiMeasuring Unit Regulating Unit

Variable Orifice Double RegulatingVale (VODRV) The adjustment of VODRV is labour intensive. The index valve is identified through the initial scan. The valve setting is calculated. The valve is then set. A flow reading is taken comparing the actual flow against the

designed flow. If there is a difference between these two values the setting of the

valve has to be corrected as required. The measurement is then repeated. If the measured flow rate is not the same as the designed flow the

    above procedure must be repeated.

BOSS Venturi Fixed Orifice DoubleRegulating Valve (FODRV) Attach the flow meter to the valve. Choose the product type and

Kvs value of the Venturi. Take the flow measurement and compare with the designed flow

rate. If the measured flow rate is not the same as the designed flow

rate adjust the valve accordingly. This is possible because the valve has a fixed orifice and the Kvs

value remains the same irrespective of the setting of the valve. It is only necessary to measure and adjust once per fixed orifice

valve. The adjustment of the BOSS Venturi valve is less time

consuming than adjustment of other types of balancing valves.

Quickset Digital Precision Handle for The BOSS Venturi DN15-DN50OperationTo complement the high accuracy of the BOSS Venturi theQuickset Digital Precision handle is fitted to all DZR brasscommissioning stations (FODRV) and double regulating valves (DRV).Each valve is capable of being set in any one of 100 positions eachclearly defined. This ensures easy and accurate flow rate settingseven after the application of thermal insulation.

To set the regulating spindle an allen key (not supplied) is insertedthrough the spindle. This is rotated to increase or decrease the flow.Due to the unique construction using the integrated ball valve andseparate regulating spindle the BOSS Venturi can be isolated with a90 rotation of the handle without moving the regulated point. Thisfeature removes the need for a memory stop.

The larger sizes of the BOSS Venturi consist of a gear operatedcast iron butterfly valve fitted with a double regulation featuremounted on a carbon steel tube fitted with the Venturi device.

These Venturi valves are available with flanged connections in along or short pattern. The range covers sizes from 65mm (21/2")to 300mm (12). This range of valves compliment the DZR brassoffering of Venturi valves and includes within the valve theupstream lengths which are required for accuratecommissioning.

The flow is calculated based on the pressure differential acrossthe nozzle. The measurement accuracy is better that +/-3% andthis accuracy is maintained over the entire measuring range from1kPa to 100kPa.

The BOSS Venturi is available in two variations: FODRV: Includes regulation, isolation and a flow

measurement unit. DRV: Includes regulation and isolation unit.

Regulation/OperationThe valve is adjusted by rotating the hand wheel on the gearbox. The water flow increases when the hand wheel is turned anti-clockwise and reduces when turned clockwise. By using a flowmeter or other measuring device the flow rate through the BOSSVenturi can be measured and adjusted to meet the specificrequirements of the system. The gearbox can be locked against thememory stop when the desired setting is achieved. Once locked thevalve can be isolated and when re-opened cannot travel past thememory stop.

IsolationThe valve is isolated by turning the hand wheel clockwise up to theS position stamped on the gearbox. After isolation the valve is re-opened to the pre-set position when the indicator cam reaches thememory stop.

Flow MeasurementFlow measurements are via the Venturi nozzle. The BOSS Venturihas two test points (P/T plugs). The high pressure test point isidentified by the RED retaining clip and the low pressure test point isidentified by the BLUE retaining clip. The pressure differentialmeasured between these test points can be used to calculate theactual flow through the Venturi. This differential can be measuredusing a flow meter or other measuring device. This is converted intoa flow rate of litres per second (l/s) or metres cubed per hour (m3/h)either electronically or using a calculation formula.
