Athletics Carnival Our annual Athletics Carnival was held at Wangi Oval on the last Wednesday of term. Thank you to Miss Jacinta Stokes for her outstanding pre-organisation of the event and to Mrs Sharon Morris for coordinating the day. We congrat-ulate the students on their participation and sportsmanship. Thank you to the parents who assisted and cheered on our students on the day. Days like this cannot run without continual parent support. We wish our zone competitors all the best at their next competition.

Dear Students, Parents, Carers and FamiliesWelcome to Term 3! This is certainly shaping up to be a busy and exciting term of learning and activities.

NAIDOC CelebrationsWe closed Term 2 with fabulous NAIDOC celebrations and activities organised by Mrs Aylee Klein. Our Aboriginal elder, Uncle Bill Smith, opened Booragul Public School’s NAIDOC Day with a traditional smoking ceremony. Over two days, Uncle Bill and his family shared traditional and contemporary storytelling, dance and music with our students, teachers and visitors. A huge thank you to Uncle Bill for making our celebrations so special and memorable. This year’s NAIDOC theme, ‘Because Of Her, We Can’, celebrates the essential role that women have played, and continue to play, as active and significant role models at the community, local, state and national levels. Aunty Sue from Speaking in Colour explored this theme with our students. They also engaged in Aboriginal art workshops with Cara and Brett from Malang Indigenous Corporation. Students participated in Aboriginal games, cooked Johnny Cakes and had the opportunity to try a variety of ‘bush tucker’ foods at our community BBQ. We were amazed by our Aboriginal Dance group led by Tazmyne Lushchwitz and the Nydakki Group from Lake Macquarie High. We thank all of our special guests for leading our students in the celebration of the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Learning For The Future

Education Week Education Week is a statewide, annual event, held during the first week of August, to celebrate NSW public education. The week communicates the achievements of public schools, their students and the value of public education. Booragul’s Education week celebrations will coincide with Book Week. Please join us next Wednesday 8 August to celebrate the excellent learning that takes place in our classrooms. Parents and carers will be invited to take part in Literacy activities in classrooms from 12pm. These activities will be followed by our Book Parade at 1pm.

Staff News Our school is extremely excited to be welcoming Mr Bradley Emanuel back to the teaching team. Mr Emanuel will be working with us on Release From Face-to-Face (RFF) and intervention programs. As you know, Booragul now has a vacant Assistant Principal position following Mrs Morris’ promotion to Greta Public School. This Assistant Principal position will be advertised in coming weeks and I am required to form a Selection Panel for this position. I invite interested parents / carers to attend the next P&C meeting on Tuesday 7 August where we will be nominating and selecting the parent representative for this panel.

P and C Meeting In addition to electing our parent representative on the interview selection panel, I will be sharing information on our Student Wellbeing programs at the next P & C Meeting. I will be discussing our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) program and consequences for positive and negative behaviours within the school setting. I will also be talking about the student use of mobile phones in school. Please come along so that you may be part of the school’s decision making.

Social Media On Tuesday 7 August, Lake Macquarie’ s Police Youth Liaison Officer will be talking to our Stage 2 and Stage 3 students about social media. Most social media services and apps require users to be 13 years old to join. This is usually to comply with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 (COPPA) which is a law preventing the collection and storage of personal information from a child under 13. App stores set their own age ratings based on the app’s content. Please refer to the table from the Office of the Children’s eSafety and esafety.gov.au/iparent to determine which apps are suitable for your child.

The Premier’s Spelling Bee

Once again, Booragul Public School is entering the 2018 Premier’s Spelling Bee. This is an opportunity for our students to increase their literacy skills while engaging in an educational and enjoyable activity.

All students will be encouraged to enter. The word lists for the competition are provided by Macquarie Dictionary and are now available for the students. The link and password to access the lists will be available from class teachers. To help familiarise our students, the format and procedure used at the Regional and State finals will be the one used at school.

The competition consists of a Junior division for students in Years 3 and 4 and a Senior division for students in Years 5 and 6.

Each school may enter two students in each division of the competition. Our school representatives will be selected via a spelling competition held at school. Our successful students will compete in the Regional Finals and the winners will then proceed to the State Final.

Regional Finals are on between Monday 3 September, 2018 and Friday, 14 September, 2018.

Thank you everyone,

Mrs Stevens Learning and Support Teacher

BaRKBuilding Reading Confidence for KidsDogs are great listeners! Children enjoy an

environment of unconditional acceptance

and emotional support. Our animal assisted

reading program removes stress and peer

pressure for the reluctant reader and BaRK

makes reading fun.

What is BaRK and where is it offered?BaRK is a free eight-week program run

during school terms, that allows children

to practice reading on a one-to-one basis

to a trained therapy dog. Each session is

fifteen minutes. Families must commit to the

full eight-week program. The dog’s trainer

will sit near-by to assist the child if needed.

BaRK is available at various Lake Mac

Libraries. Please contact 4921 0731

for more details.

How does BaRK encourage reluctant readers to read?A bond is encouraged between child and dog

by having the same child read to the same

dog each week. The dog allows children to

gain confidence and self esteem by providing

his/her love and attention in an atmosphere

free of criticism. The dogs in the BaRK

program love to listen. Such an environment

allows children to feel less self-conscious

because dogs don’t worry if a child stutters or

mispronounces a word.

What type of students? The BaRK program is beneficial to all

children struggling with their reading. This

confidence building program also benefits

children who lack self esteem or who are

shy. Any primary aged children experiencing

difficulty in reading may be nominated for the

program by a teacher or parent.
