Dear Braves, Wow, it seems like just yesterday I was writing the summer letter to Smoke Signals, introducing myself to our community during my first couple of days on the Reservation. It’s now been a full calendar year for me as the principal of this tremendous school and the excitement I feel is just as plentiful as it was a year ago. We have so much to be proud of from the 2015-16 school year, all of which will provide us the perfect launching point for what is in store for us in the 2016-17 school year. This summer will end quickly and we will be right back to work, looking to become the top producer of successful students in the nation. By now you should have already heard that we are going digital! We are currently outfitting each classroom with state of the art technology, including a 65 inch smart screen monitor, new audio enhancement, and a laptop with docking station for each teacher. During Braves Are Back (dates and times included in this edition), all students will be assigned an HP laptop with a durable shell and the versatility to also serve as a tablet. It will be important for our students to attend Braves Are Back the week of Aug 2-5 in order to get everything they need to be “first day ready”. One change during this week from years past, will be that the freshmen class will no longer have a new student orientation the Thursday before school opens. They will simply be included in the Braves Are Back week on August 5th. Our senior class representatives are working hard to create a “Boone 101” video that will be accessible for all new students and parents to watch in the comfort of their own home, instead of a packed auditorium. This way, our new students can concentrate on simply getting “first day ready”, just like the upperclassmen. On July 28th, from 6-7:30 pm, we will hold a “Digital Open House” for all parents interested in learning more about our movement to digital curriculum. This night will consist of a presentation in the auditorium that will last about an hour, culminating with a 30 minute Q&A session for parents. As we prepare as a community to embark on another exciting year on the Reservation, I hope that you will consider getting involved in one of our parent leadership groups like PTSA, BHSAA, SAC, or our Boone High School Foundation. It has been crystal clear to me during my first year of service to Boone High that the two most impactful elements to Boone High School’s success are our tremendous teachers and our unmatched family and community support. These organizations I have mentioned are perfect examples of how parents and community members can make a difference in our student’s educational experience. If you have not done so, please subscribe to my “From the Reservation” newsletter that is released bi- weekly over the summer and weekly during the school year. Students Earn Their Microsoft Office Specialist Certification

Congratulations to the 60 Boone students who earned their Microsoft Office Specialist Certification along with nine credit hours at Valencia College last year.* If interested, please ask your counselor if you can enroll in a class called “Digital Information Technology” for the 2016-2017 school year.

Senior Class Is So Excited To Kick Of The 2016-2017 School Year!

As Seniors, we’re the top of the school. Let’s make sure we dominate this year and show that our class is the best at Boone.• Let’s set a new record for most blood donated during a school term; you

can donate blood on September 19th, November 14th,  February 6th  , and April 10th

• This year we want to break the record for most money donated for Kiss the Pig. This event provides food for the holidays for needy families in our Boone Community. We want Mrs. Montgomery to Kiss That Pig!

• Homecoming Week is October 3rd - 8th, and with that comes all the festivities and competitions we know and love. We definitely want to dominate at kickball again! Let’s make sure the class of 2017 shows up to these competitions and wins everything!

This year will undoubtedly be great and with your help and participation, it can be the best one Boone High School has ever seen. Come join us at Braves Are Back and Rush Week to sign up for Senior Class Council and see the many ways you can help us make this a year to remember!

Brandon McCoy, Senior Class President

From Nurse Furman Please contact the school nurse any time your child has a medical issue or concern that affects their learning or attendance. The earlier we have a plan in place the better. For students recovering from illness or injury, we can work together to make their return to school and recovery less stressful for all! Medications: For the protection and safety of all students, medications must be delivered to the nurse by a parent or guardian. Students are not permitted to carry even nonprescription medications on them during the school day. All medications must be in the original prescription bottle, or in the factory sealed bottle. Florida Laws provide special consideration to students who need to carry and self- administer emergency medications such as inhalers and Epi-pens. If your child needs to carry this with them, the school must have an authorization form on file that has been completed by their physician. These forms are available in the clinic. If I can answer any questions or be of any assistance, please call or stop by the clinic during school hours. – Pam Furman, RN BSN - 407-893-7275 - [email protected]

News from Student Services Welcome back Braves! A special welcome goes out to the Class of 2020, as well as all students and families new to William R. Boone High School. We have an exciting new school year ahead of us and to maximize the success it can bring, you need to begin the year prepared and possessing a positive focus. The Student Services Department (Guidance) is committed to helping all students maximize their potential! The world beyond high school, whether it is college, work, technical school, military, or any other endeavor is extremely competitive. As we begin a new school year, we offer the following tips to assist each student and family as they strive for success. • Attend school daily – be punctual and prepared. • Develop a study time and place each evening where you will

not be interrupted. • Use a planner daily. • Monitor grades in each class using Progressbook

(parentaccess.ocps.net) • Stay in contact with your Guidance Counselor. If difficulties arise, parents/guardians are requested to schedule a conference with the Guidance Counselor and teachers. The earlier this is done, the easier it is for the student to get back on track. Constant communication between the student, parent/guardian, teachers, and Guidance Counselor is of paramount importance. This partnership is essential to student success. The first step a parent/guardian is requested to take when there is a classroom question or concern is to contact the individual teacher directly. If you have a feeling that something is wrong, most of the time your parental feeling is right. Call the Guidance Counselor immediately. Don’t wait! Students may request an appointment to see their Guidance Counselor before and after school, during lunch, or between classes by coming to the front desk of the Student Services Department. They will be given an appointment time and a pass to return to class. If a student has a true emergency, he or she may request to see a Guidance Counselor or the School SAFE Coordinator immediately.

Becoming Brave...Freshman Class of 2020! The Freshman Activities Committee is pleased to welcome you and your Brave to Boone High School. You will be hearing from us throughout the year about events and opportunities for the Freshman Class. This year, there will not be a “Freshman Orientation” as in years past. Freshman should plan on attending Braves Are Back at their designated time (see more specifics within this issue). The focus will be on getting all students “first day ready”, which will include renting lockers, getting ID’s, and most importantly checking out their personal laptop! The senior class officers are making a “Boone 101” video that will provide new students and parents with everything they need to know in order to find success the first week of high school. You will have the luxury of watching this video at home, instead of in a packed auditorium as in years past. Thanks Mr. Johns! Please save the date for our first event - Freshman Parent Mixer, Monday, August 8th from 6-10pm. The event will be hosted by the Freshman Committee at Friendly Confines, 4757 South Orange Ave. This casual evening is open to ALL parents from any school with an incoming Freshman at Boone, so please feel free to pass along to a friend. The Mixer will be a great opportunity to get everything you need to kick off a successful Boone experience. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. Please direct any questions to Christina Krantz at [email protected] Stay up to date on all Brave happenings by joining the Freshman Class email list. If you or someone you know would like to be included on this list, please email Charmon Shuford at [email protected] We promise not to share your information or flood your inbox. Email will only be used to communicate Freshman Class/PTSA information. Freshman Committee: Jackie Candeleria, Christina Krantz, Charmon Schuford, Kori Strickland

Join Boone Crew for Breakfast at the Boathouse Saturday August 27th 8-11am • Bill Frederick Park @ Turkey Lake • 3401 Hiawassee Rd. Orlando  You’ve read about it in news From the Reservation and the Yearbook. You’ve heard about it on Brave TV. Now come out to the lake, talk to the team, have some breakfast, get in a boat, and see what it’s all about! Crew is a co-ed sport that combines physical fitness with recreational activity. It requires minimum skills to achieve (you can learn to row in an afternoon) yet it will remain a challenge as you continue to improve. Athletes injured in other sports can find a home where they can continue to compete or work out safely. More than one football player, runner, or tennis player has found a happy home in a boat. We have one program that is open to high school students zoned for Boone High School (transportation is provided to and from high school practice) and a second program available for students in middle schools zoned for Boone so bring the family. (There is a small fee to enter Turkey Lake Park) Go to www.boonerowing.com or email [email protected] for more information. See you at the lake!

These are large meetings, open to anyone, and include food, wacky games, live music, testimonies and awesome speakers. We also have monthly Bible Studies. Bible Study meetings are smaller, designed for discussion. See our calendar below for 1st semester dates. We also have Prayer at the Pole, various service projects, and many special events and socials. You can receive text updates for all BHS FCA events by signing up for FCA’s Remind 101. All you need to do is type: @fcaboone to #81010. Parents, you can also find all our information on our ‘Boone High School FCA Parent’ FB page. All Boone Braves are welcome to come to any of our events and meetings - you do not need to be an athlete to participate!  Boone’s FCA is a great group of friendly, fun-loving kids who love Jesus! Please put our Kick-off Rally on your calendar NOW! The rally is on Monday, September 12, and includes a dinner, fun games, a great speaker, and live music. You don’t want to miss it!! If you have further questions, please contact us at [email protected] or one of our three captains – Sophie Brown, Brandon McCoy & Dom Orlando. You may also contact Mrs. Paige Caperton, our teacher sponsor, at [email protected]. All Huddles & Bible Studies begin at 7:09 pm …a reference to Isaiah 7:09  “…if you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all.”

JROTC The purpose of the Navy JROTC program is found in the law passed by Congress, title 10 USC (United States Code) “to instill in students the value of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment.” The Navy’s JROTC program started in 1966 and today there are nearly 600 Navy JROTC units throughout the United States and overseas. The program is under the guidance of the Secretary of the Navy and is administered through Naval Service Training Command (NSTC) located in Pensacola Florida. Congress appropriates annual funding for all military JROTC programs. All Instructors in the JROTC programs are retired Officers, retired Senior Non Commissioned Officers, and are certified through the Navy based upon their record of performance while serving on active duty. During the school year our activities include orienteering (land navigation), marksmanship, athletic, academic, drill, color guard, and obstacle course teams. We encourage all Cadets to participate in school related activities in addition to our JROTC activities throughout the year to continue to contribute to their Boone High School experience. Our Basic Leadership Training (BLT) for incoming 9th grade Cadets starts on Monday August 1st through the Friday August 5th from 8:00 am to 1:30 pm. The cost is $25 which covers lunch every day. A physical is required, as the Cadets with be participating in physical training PT). Forms for BLT are available at the front office at Boone HS, and need to be completed for the incoming Cadets to participate. Our activities start as soon as school starts in August. Both 1st Sgt Wilson and I are always available to consult and answer any concerns that Cadets or parents have regarding our program at Boone HS.

Kemosabe Kloset/Braves Bounty News What a WONDERFUL community we live in! THANK YOU to our Boone families, our Foundation, BHSAA and all of our supporters for making last year so great for so many of our Braves. The Kemosabe Kloset and Braves Bounty provide FREE gently-used or new clothing, shoes, backpacks, personal hygiene products, school supplies, food and many other items to ANY student in need. The purpose is to help students get through difficult times and be successful during high school. Please partner with us to help make the 2016-2017 school year successful for ALL of our Braves. Kemosabe Kloset - To start the year off, we will need lots BACK TO SCHOOL items – mechanical pencils, pens, paper, graph paper, calculators, backpacks, binders, spiral notebooks . . . anything your Brave needs. While we so appreciate all of the generous donations of clothing, what we really need are monetary donations. So many times, the item or items needed, such as Magnet clothing & shoes, undergarments, certain sizes, etc. . . are not in The Kloset and we need to purchase them. Without your monetary help, we just cannot do that. You can make donations directly to The Kemosabe Kloset online at School Pay or mail/drop a check at the BHS front office. ATTN: Alumni – if you are able, please consider donating your graduation cap, gown AND hood to The Kloset so our future alumni can have a fabulous graduation experience too! Please contact us at [email protected] with any questions. We cannot support our Braves without your support! THANK YOU! Braves Bounty - works diligently to provide meal bags to students on a weekly basis. The following are items that are included in our food bags if you would like to donate: Meat sauce, pasta, beef stew, rice, beans, canned chicken, peanut butter, jelly, canned vegetables, Ramen noodles, canned fruit, boxed mashed potatoes, breakfast bars, oatmeal, peanut butter crackers, tuna/cracker packs and pop top can pasta. Any non-perrishible items are appreciated. Full sized toiletree items are also requested (soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo/conditioner). Please consider gift card donations (Publix, Walmart, Target) that allow us to work with our community partners and keep our supplies stocked. This year we are also looking for anyone with a talent for “couponing” to help us best utilize our funds. Please contact Debbie Nagle ([email protected]) or Stephanie Van Dyke ([email protected]) with questions.

Important Yearbook Information SENIOR PICTURES- Our photographer is Dean Stewart Photography. Please don’t wait to get your pictures taken. The sooner you go to Dean Stewart’s studio, the less time you will spend waiting. To schedule an appointment, go to www.dsp-photo.com (https://tinyurl.com/seniorpic17) Seniors must have a picture taken by Oct. 1. Due to publishing deadlines, any senior who takes his/her picture after Oct. 1, will NOT be in the book and his/her picture cannot be shown at graduation. We hope you will understand that both, Dean Stewart and the yearbook staff both have deadlines to meet; therefore, seniors must take their picture by Oct.1. There is NO cost involved to take a picture, be in the yearbook or to have your photo shown at graduation – so don’t delay or you’ll miss out on this opportunity. Student must have their picture order form with payment at the time of portrait to purchase pictures. However, you don’t have to purchase anything to be pictured in the yearbook. Please make sure you are at school on this day to ensure that your picture appears in the yearbook. We cannot guarantee that retake pictures will make it into the yearbook.
