GREEN TEAM APPRECIATION LUNCHEON On August 10th, Sustainability hosted a luncheon in the Caduceus Room to honor the members of UTMB’s Green Team. Guest speakers, Gene Fisseler of Reliant Energy, and Bob Stokes of the Galveston Bay Foundation spoke on the “U” in Sustainability. Comprised of UTMB staff throughout our campus, the Green Team has been reinstituted this past year with fresh vision and goals to aggressively look for opportunities to reduce energy

consumption, and to promote ideas to reuse or recycle waste as much as possible in their work areas. In part because of the Green Team’s voice, eyes, and ears around their workplace, UTMB has been able to meet the FY 2011 goals of 206 BTUs per square foot, and recycling 26% of our municipal solid waste. The goal for FY 2012 to reduce our BTUs per square foot by an additional 2%, and our increased recycling goal to 29% is definitely in reach because of the can-do spirit reflected by the wonderful

members of UTMB’s Green Team, and so many others across the UTMB community.

We are excited about the possibilities that can occur when work together to work wonders! Thank you Green Team!! If you or you someone you know is interested in becoming a member of the UTMB Green Team, please contact Neal Cooper at ext. 72958, or Ken Steblein at ext. 72959.

Gardening and Landscaping Keeps You Fit A good way to burn calories is to spend time gardening and landscaping. Put on some work clothes, apply the sunscreen, grab your sun glasses and hat, and head out doors. Why not take advantage of some physical exercise that will improve the looks of your landscape and also give you the fringe benefit of a bountiful harvest in fruits, flowers and vegetables. Working in the yard also relieves stress. Outdoor projects will help you unwind from the pressures of your day. Grow your own produce, you cannot beat the taste of fresh herbs to spice up your dinner, melons for breakfast, or berries for a snack. Ever have a tomato fresh off the vine? Nothing compares! Of course the lawn also needs to be cut, weeds need to be pulled and hedges need to be trimmed. This is Mother Nature’s gym; designed to keep you busy and physically active. Gardening can involve a multitude of exercises. Start out with some simple stretches of the legs and arms so that you are more flexible. To prevent soreness change up the routine while working. Start out with the lighter tasks like trimming and pruning at waste level or higher. Then move to weeding, which will mean squatting and bending, and may involve some digging, lifting or wheel barreling chores. Take water breaks often and rest breaks in the shade if it is a hot day. For an advanced workout you can get rid of all your power tools and saw, chop, trim, split and clip your way to better health. Consider edging your lawn with hand shears. Instead of always squatting the same way, alternate legs with one

forward and one back in a lunge to lower yourself to the ground. This uses many more muscle groups than walking or squatting and relieves some of the stress on your knees. Combine the two and alternate lunging steps to get your lawn edged and get a potent workout on your legs! You can also use the same strategy to weed a row in your garden.

Use a hand saw and ax for cutting up all of your branches. If you need to you can get out your splitting axe and wedges to split the larger logs for firewood. Of course then you need to stack the wood. Even if you don’t need the firewood to burn you can easily find a home for it if it is cut to fireplace lengths.

Go ahead and use the push mower, even if you have a large lawn! This is your chance for a good cardio workout. Take it one step further and use the totally muscle-powered Reel Type mowers. Since you need a good cardio workout three times a week, you could also volunteer to mow your elderly neighbor’s lawn to get in the extra workout!

Put away the electric hedge trimmers and use the old style hedge trimmers with long blades. As with any workout you need to have a cool down period at the end. Wind down by raking, sweeping, harvesting

produce or hand watering. Wandering thru the sprinkler, hopping in the shower or taking a dip in the pool are other ways to help you cool down, clean off a bit and relax.

Check out the Galveston County Master Gardeners website; a great resource of knowledge and way to give back to the community by volunteering. http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/galveston/index.htm
