ukraine is located between asia and europe so its culture is a combination of eastern and western european influences.Withmorethan 110 ethnic groups, there’s a lot of diversity and unique characteristics in ukrainian culture. Dur-ing the renaissance and the rule of the Byzantine empire, ukrainian culture went through tremen-dous changes. Dominated by the eastern orthodox church and pre-christian traditions, ukrainian cul-ture also shares its origin with the neighboring Belarusian and russian cultures. the origin of these three cultures can be traced to Kievan rus.

Hutsuls – people of the mountainsthe Hutsul people are an impressive example for the close bond between people and nature. For centuries they have been living in the remote val-leys of the mountainous region – carpathians. it nevermademuchdiffer-

ence whether the King of poland or the emperor in vienna governed them, and the church bells still rang out under the long period of sovjet rule during the three years of German occupation.so the Hutsuls live here, a mountain people that has small, shaggy ponies, tends its sheep and loves its forest but not the authorities. Here there are farmhouses made only of wood and in winter the wolves can be heard howling. the families spend the days in a large room, which also contains the loom. the

children weave sheep`s wool and bake fresh cheese to “brynza” in the oven. their christianity is mixed with pre-christian customs. Devil’s women, peoples with cloven hooves and the “unclean” who steal the souls of the dead, still haunt the land. However, their love of

festivities has remained as strong as ever. a wedding with hundreds of quests, who often bring their own food and drink, lasts for three days with dancing, songs with endless num-bers of verses, drinking toasts and new supplies of food, until exhaustion dictates that the festivities must come to an end.

Cossacks – founders of Ukrainian Fighting & Democratic Traditionscossacks are ukrainian warriors, who governed ukraine in 15-18th cen-turies, formed their re-public, gave to the world

thefirstdemocraticconstitution and were one of the best warriors in europe and world.Being great warriors, who can be compared with Japanese samurais or sparta warriors, cos-sacks were a great state leaders and keepers of ukrainian traditions. it was a honorable and rich class from whom english Queen borrowed money and who were often guest of spain Queen and other european monarchs.in 15th century cossacks established as selfgov-erned community in ukrainian steppe, who didn’t acknowledge no ones power. they became warriors who fought for food and money, than they started to protect ukrainian villages from tartars.at the beginning of 16th century the cossacks pop-ulations was drastically growing and they began transformation from warriors into the separate class of the society. they started to form their own legislation which still is acknowledged to be the

most democratic legisla-tion. throughout the time this legislation was codificatedintothefirstconstitution in the word known as phylyp orlyk constitution. French air-port orlie is named after this great leader.till the end of the 16th century cossacks formed their own republic – Zaporizka sich, which is now located in Zapori-zhia. and in 17th century the cossacks Hetman (the Head of the whole class) became the Het-man of ukraine and gov-erned the whole country.cossacks had deep tradi-tions. they were very religious christians, their motherland, religion and freedom were 3 basic values of every cossack

for which they fought for, lived for and died for. Pysanka’s – Ukrainian painted egg Before christianity the egg was associated with pagan rituals and super-stitions, symbolizing the release of the earth from the shackles of winter into spring; with its prom-ise of new hope, new life, health and prosperity. in 988 aD when ukraine accepted christianity, the decorating of eggs
