The front office does not phone

through to classrooms to have

children sent to the office for

early collection, as this causes

too many disruptions. Parents

must allow enough time to go

through and collect their child

from the classroom if they wish

to collect them early.

Please do not park in the

preschool car park unless you

have a preschool child as

parking spaces are limited.

One of the key concepts that we are currently exploring as part of

our journey into Visible Learning is the importance of developing a

Growth Mindset. Carol Dweck (Mindset, 2006) suggests that

people (children and adults) can be categorised into 2 groups:

Those predominantly with a with a Fixed Mindset

Those predominantly with a Growth Mindset

Dr Dweck (A Stanford University Professor) discovered that

children who believed that their intelligence, skill or talent could be

developed (‘growth mindset’) were far more motivated to learn.

Confident children embrace challenges, persist when facing

difficulties and learn from feedback. These are all hallmarks of the

‘growth mindset’ identified by Dr Dweck, which she found led to

higher levels of achievement and personal empowerment.

Dr Dweck also identifies the increase of the ‘fixed mindset’ as

children progress past Year 3 of their schooling. This is a mindset

generated by the belief that intelligence and talents are fixed,

resulting in a tendency to want to look intelligent, avoid challenges

(and making mistakes) and ignore negative feedback.

Dweck and her fellow researchers found that messages children

heard about themselves in the speech of significant adults,

directly affected their growth mindset. If parents and teachers

spoke to children in a way that suggested that their intelligence

was fixed, children began to believe that too and developed ‘fixed

mindset’ traits.

So how do we as adults overcome this?

One way that parents can really help their children is by carefully

choosing the words that are used when they praise them. Every

word parents say and action they perform sends a message to

their children. These words and actions tell children how to think

about themselves. Parents should always praise their child’s

effort instead of praising accomplishments. The following table

Years 3 -6 Students have been kept busy lately doing units of

work in both ‘Design and Technology’ and ‘Enterprise and

Economics’. In the kitchen, students have been creating a

cookbook full of tried and tested Driver Primary recipes, which will

be available for purchase once completed. At Farm Driver, Year

5/6 students have nearly completed their 'Pallet Furniture

Benches' and the Year 3/4 classes are beginning to design their

own garden tools. Watch this space for a sneak peek at the

recipe book and some photos of the completed furniture.

PLEASE DONATE: If you have any 10c containers at home,

please send them to school with your child. Students earn points

for end of term class prizes and it is a great fundraiser for our

school. Thanks!

Tickets will be on sale from Mondayfrom the Driver Primary Front Office

It’s that exciting time of year again when students are honing their

dance and performance skills for our end of year concert. We are

happy to announce that tickets will be on sale for $20 adults and

$10 for children (family members or those not performing) or

concession holders from Monday. Due to popular demand for

tickets, it is advisable that you purchase them as soon as

possible as they do sell quickly and there are limited

numbers available.

As the concert is out of normal school hours, students can only

attend if accompanied by a parent or guardian. This year we will

be recording which children the adults purchasing tickets are

attached to, so that we can ensure that reminders are sent home

to those children without family attending and families of

performing students are given priority.

All students performing on the night will not need a ticket as they

must remain seated with their class for the entire show (except for

preschool who must be collected at interval). Any students not

performing will need to purchase a ticket to be seated with their

parent/guardian. Preschool students can sit on the lap of their

family (or sit in free seats vacated after interval by families leaving

early) after interval if staying to enjoy the second half of the show

so don’t need a ticket.

Due to safety reasons, Darwin Entertainment Centre requests

prams not be allowed in the theatre, but they may be left in the

foyer area. Children young enough to sit on parents laps do not

require a ticket. Food is also not allowed in the auditorium.

For those families requiring transport, Driver School Council has

subsidised the cost of hiring a bus. The bus will leave the school

at 5:30pm and return to the school after the concert. Bus tickets

can be purchased for $3 each from the front office. Please note

that there are limited seats available.

You would have noticed our electronic noticeboard at the

front of the school. Important upcoming events are

advertised there as well as in the fortnightly newsletter, on

our Facebook page and on our website. A hard copy of the

newsletter is also posted in the glass noticeboard at the front

of the school. Hard copies are available to collect from the

front office for those who want a hard copy. For those

families who have devices such as smart phones or ipads,

we encourage you to download the Driver Primary Skoolbag

app. This app will notify you of upcoming events and can

even notify the school if your child is absent via this app,

rather than ringing the school. Newsletters are also stored

here.
