Appointments

We are pleased to announce Cherie Johnston will be our third Cassia Teacher in 2016.

Cherie has been our Billy Button and Primary School Release teacher this year and is

relishing the opportunity to be able to focus in early childhood which is her real passion. The

team is beginning to form. Congratulations Cherie.

Welcome Back John Burnett.

John is back with us for three weeks as the teacher’s Mentor. John also runs a part of the

Teacher Training on Wednesday evenings, ‘The Study of Man’ which is a book by Rudolf

Steiner that delves into the deeper spiritual nature of Humankind’s evolution.

Class Plays

We have a number of ‘Play Performances’ coming up. What a joy they are for the teachers,

children and parents. It is a time not just to enjoy but where we can mark the children’s

progress in so many ways, confidence, academically and playfulness. Please try to make

room in your busy schedules to come along either for their performance to the other

students or to the parent performance.

End of year Reports: Formatting change

Reports will be coming out at the end of this term as per normal. We would remind you that

the reports are meant to be for parents eyes only and not for the children. Teachers

feed-back to children regularly and in numerous ways about their progress. The reports are

a window into your child’s progress for you as parents.

The teachers have been working since last year on reformatting the reports. The impulse

has been to provide meaningful information without unnecessary detail. We have taken

many of the outcomes and put them under appropriate banners. We hope you like the

changes.

As part of the process a small focus group of parents was formed to give feedback about the

new format. Some great ideas came forward which we have tried to incorporate in the new

look. One of these was to provide an explanation about ‘Differentiated Learning Goals’.

You will find an explanation at the beginning of the report. Simply, differentiated learning

goals refer to material your child may be working on that has come out of class work but

possibly at a different academic level or alternatively your child may be working on material

not associated with class work and at a different academic level. This can happen in the

classroom environment with the assistance of our Learning Support Teachers or the ISA’s

or alternatively, in a situation where children are withdrawn from the class environment to

work at an individual or small group level.

The other noticeable change is from Letters (A, B, C, D, E) to Numbers (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) as

‘Achievement Descriptors’.

The ‘Engagement Descriptors’ remain letters (A, B, C, D, E)

Explanation of Descriptors

Achievement Definition

Accomplished 1Your child is working beyond the expectations for this year level.

Working independently.

Proficient 2Your child usually achieves confidently the stated outcomes for this

year level

Capable 3Your child usually achieves the stated outcomes for this year level

with minimal support

Developing 4Your child is working towards achieving the stated outcomes for this

year level with some support and guidance

With assistance 5Your child requires significant support and guidance to achieve the

outcomes for this year level

Music

Hi All,

Everyone is doing a fantastic job with their music learning this term

despite the few interruptions we’ve had.

The orchestra piece is coming along nicely and I’m looking forward to

putting both orchestras together in the coming weeks and hearing the full

sound of two combined orchestras!

Just a reminder that all lessons will resume this Wednesday

(18th November).

Until next week,

Emma

Holyoake

Holyoake will not be coming to school to see kids for their

sandplay on the 12th & 19th of November.

They will be seeing children on the last 3 weeks of the term

(being 26th & 3rd Nov &10th December).

Thankyou in advance

Billy Button

Dear Parents,

This week, Thursday and Friday is your last opportunity to download

photos of your child in Billy Button before I delete the photos off my

computer. In respect to other families in Billy Button, please do not upload

photos on Facebook.

A couple of weeks ago at Ellery Creek Big Hole, I spotted five little ducks

paddling around. We were out there again yesterday and they’re a little bit

bigger, happily swimming around in the weeds and duck diving. The

children have been singing ‘Five Little Ducks’ in our circle and we have

been singing ‘Row, Row, Row Your Boat” out to the middle of Ellery

Creek, too. Also, our story for the last three weeks has been ‘Tiddalick the

Frog.’ A shortened version. The children loved this story and some told

me that they had the book at home and knew the story already!

Happy 4th Birthday Ariya! Thank you for sharing your pineapple muffins

with us.

Have a lovely week,

Cherie and Janine

RSB 1

Dear Families,

In our morning circle at the moment we are learning new skills with bean

bag games – throwing/ catching, balancing, spatial orientation,

under/over, behind/in front to name just a few of the skills. It is all fun and

a great extension and challenge for the children at this time of year. We

have also on the cooler days been learning how to skip – a wonderful, joy-

filled activity.

There are close links between physical, motor development and cognitive

development.

The brain is stimulated through movement – neural pathways are opened

and provide vital connections relaying messages to and from the body.

“Movement opportunity is food for the brain.” Goddard

And so while we are having fun with our bean bags and learning to skip

we are laying the foundations for later learning.

Please make a note in your dairies that our Advent/Christmas

Festival will be celebrated on Wednesday the 9th December.

This is a short day starting at 9am (parents and children arriving

together) and ending at 10.30am.

Details will follow next week.

Enjoy the week ahead.

Warm wishes,

Julia and Jen

Thank you to everyone who has put in their preference for next year, if

you haven't please see Yvonne in the office.

The end of the year is fast approaching, our last festival together will be

on Friday 11th December at 9am. If I haven't seen you already, can you

please give Simone or myself an indication of how many will be attending

our festival, or if you are leaving before the term ends. A festival letter will

be coming home shortly with all of the details on it.

We are also looking for families who are staying in town over the Xmas

holidays who would be happy to water our garden, or take Peanut and

Pickles home to look after them.

Have a great week

Love Lenley and Simone xx

Dear Families,

Re: Christmas Festival date

I'd like to gauge the possibility of having our final festival on Thursday 10th

Dec (rather than Friday) at 12.00 noon and children going home after the

festival.

Is this possible for your family?

Please RSVP by email as soon as possible if this date & time does not

suit your family.

Thank you,

Rene

[Across EC we are sharing resources so it might be handy to have our

festivals on different days, but not an imperative.]

Cassia 2

We have had a peaceful week in Cassia 2. The children have been doing

a lot of creating and exploring during their play. Much discussion and

interest has sprung from changes in the environment, seedpods in our

trees have ripened and are attracting a variety of beautiful visiting parrots.

Many different lizards have also been spotted this week.

Class 2 play

Following the class 2 performance of the King of Ireland’s Son which

some of the Cassia children got to see last Wednesday evening, many

theatrical games and musical performances spontaneously emerged

during indoor play on Thursday, complete with a stage and seats for the

audience! Excitement is building for the class one performance, which we

will all get to see this week :)

Wednesday meeting

It was lovely to meet with next year’s Class 1 families last Wednesday,

thank you for making me feel so welcome! Thank you also for the donated

seeds and shells to help build our class resources for 2016, keep them

coming!

Class One

Dear Class 1 families,

Play week is here! I hope you have received your posters and invitations

for Wednesday evening's performance of 'The White Snake'. The children

have been enjoying lots of practice, here's a sneak preview photo! Have a

chat with your child about the play as this may help you follow the story. It

is a Grimm's tale about a trusty servant who tastes his king's secret food,

which is cooked white snake. This enables him to understand the

language of animals. This skill enables him to discover the whereabouts of

the queen's ring and help some animals who then help him out in return.

Please come at 5.30 pm with some healthy finger food for a shared meal

after the performance. The food can go in the school kitchen before the

play and then be served on tables on the verandah after a group blessing.

Please help with supervising your children and cleaning up afterwards,

thanks.

After so many practices of singing, reading lines and dress rehearsals,

Class 2 put on two spectacular performances for both the school and their

families.

I was soo very impressed to see every child standing tall and straight as a

tree, speaking their lines clearly and strongly with confidence and pride. It

was wonderful to see the children helping each other with cues and

costume changes.

They held each other together beautifully and delivered the play on their

own as if they were living in the days of the King of Ireland's Son.

A truely magical performance,

Well done Class 2.

I have had some requests from parents, asking if anyone filmed the play,

and if they would like to share it? Unfortunately I don't have any photos of

the play, so if you would like to bring in a USB with photos and films to

share, I can create a Class 2 Camp and Play Photo Collection for you.

Also .. A reminder that we will be swimming at the pool next

Tuesday the 24th.

Zara

Class Three

This week we spent some time developing a classroom currency. The

children chose glass wishing stones as our coinage, and then split into

groups that made shops. We also had a bank and a raffle ticket seller. Our

classroom has been buzzing with criers: "Come buy my tennis balls!" and

"Silk scarves for sale!" and " Rocks at sale price - 2 for the price of one!"

We had sharing of profits, a bankruptcy, a theft, taxes were paid, buskers

appeared...

Our main lesson on trade and money has led us from swapping, trading

ochre, cacao money of the Aztecs, to the shekel in biblical times and now

this week Holey Dollar of Australian convict era. It is such a rich

curriculum, preparing the children for life in a practical and wise way.

Here are some pictures for you...

Katy

Class Four

The children are loving our Human and Animal main lesson and last week

we went to work on our sketching by walking up the road to sketch a

beautiful black horse in a paddock. The children found it a challenge to

sketch something that changed position! They all tried their best and got

to see firsthand, the different muscles and details of the horse. Thankyou

Ang and Mel for accompanying us.

We continue to work on our play practice. This week we are looking at

costumes and props as well as some new scripted songs and movement

pieces.

In Maths last week we looked at simple graphs and their usefulness in

relaying information quickly and effectively. In a mock graph that I made,

some very interesting analogies and ideas were made about why

elephants eat what they do on different days! Needless to say we also

covered the difference between facts and ideas.

Our parent meeting for the term is tomorrow night at 7pm.

Please let me know if you are unable to make it. It is a wrap up meeting

about the year, how the class is going and things to date 'til the end of

term.

Have a great week!

Saludos,

Class Five

I would like to share with you my admiration of Class 5 and their

developing maturity. There are moments when the class come together as

an aware, sensitive, caring group of individuals, able to listen to each

others feelings and concerns and learn from such a sharing. I feel very

honoured to be a part of it.

We are also learning to express our feelings and observations of the plant

world through poetry. We can now see the connection, or ‘ngapartji

ngapartji’ of the flowering plant with the insect world, particularly the bees

and butterflies. In fact a flower could be seen as a butterfly attached to the

earth, and a butterfly seen as a flower set free.

Our play continues to come together as the children develop their

characters. Please keep helping with lines and cues as well as the

costume, so the characters can really come to life.

We will continue our spelling and dictation routine through to the end of

the term. Please be mindful that there is homework to be done towards

this each week. As we have discussed, I do not set a lot of homework, but

what I do set I expect to be done. The children are aware of this, however,

they may need your encouragement. Please sign the spelling book each

Class Six

Hello Everyone.

What a week it was. We had lots of croaky voices in the class last week

including my own but seem to have come through relatively unscathed.

Many of the students had their orientation day at St Phillip's last Monday.

It seemed to be a very enjoyable day for all.

We were treated to two wonderful medieval projects by Jess and Becky

last week. It is always wonderful to see the students 'shine' in this context.

Jess had made a sample of medieval weapons including a mace, flail and

catapult. Quite an achievement. Becky on the other hand wrote a

wonderfully engaging extended narrative juxtaposing modern times with

medieval. You could have heard a pin drop during both presentations;

such was the engagement of their audience.

Graduation is approaching and there's a general excitement in the air. It's

important to remember however that the year is still very much in progress

and there's much work to be done.

Have a great week.

Cheers

Denise and Noel
