BROWN “CROOKED ROAD STRAIGHT: The Awakening of AIDS Activist Linda Jordan” is a phenomenal and personal journey of how Linda Jordan, a woman whose life was a struggle just to survive, became a messenger of hope for families coping with AIDS. This book takes the reader down the path taken by Linda, a second-generation welfare recipient and a heroin addict, over five harrowing decades in Hartford, Connecticut, one of America’s poorest cities. “What a wonderful job. It is written in such a way, you feel you are watching a “live” recording of Linda’s life, as she struggles, and deals honestly with childhood molestation, rape, alcoholism, a life long struggle with addiction, and then living and dying with HIV/AIDS.”   — Kathy Tummillo, veteran HIV/ AIDS practitioner, Saint Francis Care, Hartford, Connecticut. Veteran journalist Tina A. Brown elevates Jordan’s true life tale above the narrow confines of a now wearying stream of media headlines to give those who care a blueprint for action. Firmly, lovingly, Tina also challenges those who mimic Jordan’s self-sabotaging ways to help move themselves out of the line of fire. -- Katti Gray, freelance writer, New York City. “Tina A. Brown has written a powerful book that clearly reveals the impact of poverty on the life of Linda Jordan. She inspired people to seek divine guidance.’’ — Gwendolyn Lewis, retired Connecticut  Department of Public Health.

January to July a Journey of Discernment

CirclePress.org

In the wIsdom of the ChurCh, there exists around the world little schools set aside for young people who, even at a tender age, perceive a call from God to explore a possible vocation to the priesthood or consecrated life. For years these special schools have nurtured and protected countless early vocations and have helped launch many great men and women of the Church. And now, perhaps, a young one you love is showing interest in leaving home early to contemplate a vocation. Here, wisdom can sometimes collide with emotion, and discernment about what is best can be challenging.

In January to July, you will read the stories of dozens of families who found themselves making that journey of discernment. It recounts the experiences of parents and those who have attended and emerged from these schools in a direct, down-to-earth, and even witty manner. Here are ordinary people who encountered an extraordinary life decision, confronted a cascade of objections and self-doubts — brave souls who didn’t pretend that the journey is easy but recognized the peace that inevitably followed. January to July carefully lays out the Church’s current teaching about minor seminaries, apostolic schools, and precandidacies for the young, a teaching that may be surprising to modern Catholics. Above all, this is a book of hope for a future populated by some special young people who, with God’s grace, will do great things for the Church and the world.

The New Fundamentalists

A diagnosis and a prescription for positive action...

The word “fundamentalist” often conjures up an image of religious narrow-mindedness, perhaps with an irrational or even fanatical bent. But there’s a new fundamentalism

hiding in our world today embraced by those who profess to be secular followers of no religion. These “new fundamentalists” perceive that there is an implicit arrogance in any statement of truth, especially if it implies a value judgment about morality. This “tolerance” is often aggressively intolerant. If you’re looking for practical ways to engage in thoughtful dialogue and a search for truth with a secular world, this book will show you how. With razor-sharp thinking and calm optimism, the author zeroes in on the essential principles at stake and provides pointers for positive solutions.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Daniel Brandenburg, LC, holds degrees in both philosophy and theology from Regina Apostolorum University in Rome, Italy, where he is currently pursuing an advanced degree in theology at the same university. He splits his time between mission work in North America and his residence in Rome, where he collaborates in the general directorate of the Legion of Christ.
