22-26 May 2018, IHCantabria, Spain

Welcome to Santander, the “bride” of the Atlantic Ocean.

On behalf of the Coastlab18 Organizing and Scientific Committees

and the Environmental Hydraulics Institute “IH Cantabria” of the Uni-

versity of Cantabria (Spain), it is a pleasure to invite you to participate

in the 7th International Conference on the Application of Physical Mo-

delling in Coastal and Port Engineering and Science. Coastlab18, the

7th edition of the CoastLab international conference series, will take

place in Santander, Cantabria region’s capital city, from the 22-26 th

of May 2018, and will build on the successes of previous conferences

held in Porto (2006), Bari (2008), Barcelona (2010), Ghent (2012),

Varna (2014) and Ottawa (2016).

Coastlab18 is organized under the auspices of the International As-

sociation of Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR) and

will be hosted by the Environmental Hydraulics Institute “IHCantabria”

of the University of Cantabria. Coastlab18 will provide a stimulating

and enriching forum to discuss the latest developments in physical

modelling applied to coastal and port engineering and coastal science.

We are looking forward to welcoming you in Santander in May 2018!

Inigo J. Losada and Javier L. Lara

Coastlab 2018

CONGRESS VENUE

Magdalena PalaceThe Coastlab18 will be held from Wednesday 22 to Friday 25 May 2018 in the Magdalena Palace. The Magdalena Palace will be the venue for Coastlab18. It is the most emblematic building of Santander and one of the most prominent examples of civil architecture in northern Spain. Surrounded by a ma-jestic landscape, it is located at the highest point of the Peninsula bearing the same name. The facilities for the conference include an Auditorium for the plenary and parallel sessions “Room 1” “and two parallel sessions “Rooms 2 & 3”. An area for the exhibition will be set at the “Comedor” in Caballe-rizas for all the companies and organizations that are going to partici-pate in the Coastlab18 exhibition. The coffee breaks and lunches will be held in this area too.

Address:Palacio de la MagdalenaAvda. de la Magdalena, s/n39005 Santander, Cantabria

Registration DeskThe registration desk is located at the entrance of the Auditorium “Paraninfo” and will be open from Wednesday 23 May from 8.30 h until the end of the conference.

Information for SpeakersAs a Speaker, you are encouraged to attend the session room at least 15-20 minutes before the beginning of the session. Please check the congress map in the programme for room number and location. When you arrive at your session please introduce yourself to the chairman.Speakers cannot connect laptops into computer projectors in the meeting room.Speakers have to load their presentation in advance in the room where the presentation will take place. Members from the organisa-tion will be in the rooms before the start of the sessions and during coffee and lunch breaks to assist you.The time slot for each presentation is 20 minutes (maximum). The LOC (Local Organizing Committee) recommends a 15-min talk (maxi-mum) with the remaining time for questions. Please strictly adhere to the allotted time to ensure the parallel sessions are truly parallel!

SOCIAL EVENTS

The conference delegates will have the chance to network with co-

lleagues and other professionals in the field at the following events:

Icebreaking Reception. Tuesday, 22 May 2018

An Icebreaking Reception will be held at the Magdalena Palace to welcome the

participants.

The construction of the Palace, between 1908 and 1912, following the plans

of Gonzalo Bringas and Javier González de Riancho, resulted from a municipal

initiative: the Town Council wanted to present Kings Alfonso XIII and Victoria

Eugenia with a summer residence to consolidate the summer tradition that was

taking root in the city and its province. In 1977 the Town Council of Santander

reached an agreement with Don Juan de Borbón, Count of Barcelona, with the

aim of recovering the Peninsula for the city. The alteration and modernization

works culminated in its inauguration by the Kings, Don Juan Carlos and Doña

Sofia, on June 14, 1995.

• Venue: Magdalena Palace

• Address: Avda. De la Magdalena, s/n

• Time: 20.30 h.

• Dress code: business casual

• Ticket: included in the registration fee

Welcome Cocktail. Wednesday, 23 May 2018

Welcome Cocktail will be organized to welcome all delegates coming from all

over the world at the “Gran Casino”.

The neoclassical style building with modernist elements was built and inaugurated

in 1916, based on the project of architect Eloy Martínez del Valle. Nothing has to

do with this casino that was built in 1870 in the same place and that was the stage

for many years of numerous parties, which brought together Amadeo de Saboya,

Alfonso XIII, Victoria Eugenia, as well as families of the aristocracy national and

international that came to Santander attracted by the beauty of its beaches.

• Venue: Gran Casino

• Address: Plaza de Italia, s/n

• Time: 20.00-22.00 h.

• Dress code: business casual

• Ticket: included in the registration fee

Conference Dinner. Friday, 25 May 2018

The local organizing committee is delighted to welcome all delegates to the

Coastlab 2018 Conference Dinner which will be held at the “Real Club de Tenis”.

Founded in 1906, El Tenis, as it is familiarly known, has witnessed the beginning

of social and sporting Santander life in the first decades of the 20th century.

• Venue: Real Club de Tenis

• Address: Avda. De la Magdalena, 8

• Time: 20.30 h.

held on Thursday, 24 May. Buses will take the Coastlab18 participants from

the conference venue to the IHCantabria experimental facilities. Buses will return

participants to their hotels after the visit.

The Laboratory of Coastal Engineering, Oceanography and Hydraulics ( IHLab

Hidro ) performs tests on physical model which related to the generation and

propagation of waves , wave – wave and wave – structure, stability and beha-

vior of coastal protection structures interaction phenomena are studied , seawalls

and marine structures , behavior of floating structures, operation of valves and

hydraulic machine and testing devices marine energy generation. The IH HYDRO

LAB has 2 tanks with capacity directional wave generating currents and wind,

current oleaje- 3 channels , 1 channel current variable slope 1 tank for the study

of hypersaline effluent and a construction area of river models.

The International Association for Hydro-Environ-

ment Engineering and Research (IAHR), founded in

1935, is a worldwide independent organization of engi-

neers and water specialists working in fields related to the

tion. Activities range from river and maritime hydraulics to

water resources development and eco-hydraulics, through

to ice engineering, hydro-informatics and continuing edu-

cation and training. IAHR stimulates and promotes both

research and its application, and by so doing strives to

contribute to sustainable development, the optimization

of world water resources management and industrial flow

processes. IAHR accomplishes its goals by a wide variety

of member activities including: working groups, research

agenda, congresses, specialty conferences, workshops and

short courses; Journals, Monographs and Proceedings; by

involvement in international programmes such as UNESCO,

WMO, IDNDR, GWP, ICSU, and by co-operation with other

water-related (inter)national organizations.
