NEW IDEA BERT NEWTONS 75TH BIRTHDAY SPECIAL

ASSISTED OLIVIA SPARKS

Small children are running around the garden in ever-decreasing circles, blowing bubbles and

yelling with excitement. Smiling benignly, Bert Newton

stands in the middle of the noise and chaos like the ringmaster at a circus or the compere on a particularly rowdy Logies night.

The much-loved TV legend is celebrating his 75th birthday – a milestone he feared he would not survive to see – with his grandchildren Sam, five, Eva, four, and little Lola, 16 months.

Happy simply to be alive following risky quadruple heart bypass surgery, not to mention hard at work on his latest theatre role, Bert is in a reflective mood.

‘You know, I think in the face of success or failure, happy times or not-so-happy times, you have to stay calm,’ he says, in the familiar voice that first propelled

him to radio stardom. ‘And if you can’t stay calm, don’t let it show!’

Confronted by a string of recent health and family setbacks, Albert Watson Newton, AM, MBE, has needed all the serenity he can muster, with the help of adored wife Patti and daughter Lauren.

As well as heart problems, Bert’s battled severe pneumonia, which once almost claimed his newborn granddaughter Eva’s life.

Patti has fought three bouts of transient global amnesia, a rare but devastating brain disorder that temporarily stole her memory, leaving her confused, disoriented and fearful she was falling victim to Alzheimer’s.

And the couple’s troubled son Matthew has been in and out of court and psychiatric treatment for three years.

‘It’s been a tough time but I’m lucky to be here,’ Bert ponders, his famous

‘Moonface’ unusually pensive. ‘I didn’t realise quite how lucky I was until after the heart operation. I didn’t know the doctors had told Patti I was only a 50/50 chance.

‘I knew it was serious but I really believe, you know, that if there’s something that’s not particularly a happy situation, if you can do something about it, you do it. If you can’t, you accept it.

‘It’s all about your attitude. I know people 30 years younger than me, but their attitude is not a young one. It all depends on that, and on your state of health as well. And I’ve been pretty lucky throughout my life, although I’ve had a couple of curve balls thrown at me in the past couple of years.

‘That’s luck, providence, call it what you will – but if it had to happen, the great thing is that I got through it, with a few prayers. Probably the evening before the operation, the prayers were a little more fervent than usual!’
