Whatever happened to the Lobster Trap

where many of us enjoyed a casual Sunday

lunch while watching sailboat races on

Cooper Lake? Unfortunately, Tom, the

owner, met his demise and was translated to

the great lobster bay in the sky. His family

chose not to renew their lease with the

Camden County Park Commission. The

commission advertised for a new tenant and

eventually chose an experienced

restaurateur from the Westmont area who

proposed a high-class cuisine.

Now we face reality. The building was

old and in need of lots of repair. The deck

that we loved so much was not structurally

sound and had to be completely torn down.

The sandy soil beneath that structure was

replaced with gravel that needed several

months to settle. Such was only one of the

many delays in completing the rebuilding of

the restaurant. Would it ever be complete?

My friend, Ralph, who knows the new

owner, kept advancing the date of

completion until I knew it would never

happen. C'est la vie!

On occasion, I would drive by to see if

there had been any change. No surprise...

the workmen had morphed into snails.

Think "Escargot." Eventually, with a new

roof, new siding, and some paint, a classier

structure appeared. If you are looking for

the Lobster Trap, you'll drive right by this

beautiful brown building with its newly

manicured green lawn, and new sidewalks.

There was a contest to name the place.

"Cooper House" was chosen. The key to

completion was workers doing final touches

on a Sunday. I asked when the place would

open. The answer, "The middle of

May." (Should this have an exclamation

mark or a question mark?)

I'm excited about trying the new cuisine,

and am hoping we can resume Fan 50

luncheons overlooking the lake.

Our Club—A Quick View

When we started this club in October

of 2000, our goal was to provide

interesting social activities for people

over 50 years of age.

Since that time we’ve sponsored

thousands of activities from free concerts

in local parks to trips to Hong Kong.

While not intended to be a partnership

meeting place, many of us have found

lasting friendships. We’ve noticed that

the more involved you are, the more

satisfying the friendships become. As

you might expect, we’ve seen our share

of marriages as well.

Some other events include dance

parties at local clubs, pinochle games,

Kimmel Center concerts, dinners, trips

and special interest groups like

photography and birding.

We have no limit as to what adventure

might be sponsored. Belonging is lots of

fun. Lonely nights tend to disappear.

We provide descriptions of events and

current information by way of a monthly

newsletter, a web site and a weekly

email. We email special changes as

needed.

The basis of our club is members

hosting events for other members. That is

what keeps the club vibrant and moving

forward. So think of something you

would like to do or attend, and host it as

a club event. We need your

participation.
