    Subject: Automatic Transmission Diagnostic Procedure

    APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS 2011 Mazda2 (FN4A-EL) 2004-2005 Mazda3 (FN4A-EL) 2006-2009 Mazda3 (FN4A-EL, FS5A-EL) 2010-2011 Mazda3 (FS5A-EL) 2006-2007 Mazda5 (FN4A-EL) 2008-2010 and 2012 Mazda5 (FS5A-EL) 2003-2004 Mazda6 (FN4A-EL) 2005 Mazda6 (FN4A-EL, AW6A-EL) 2006-2010 Mazda6 (FS5A-EL, AW6A-EL) 2011 Mazda6 (FS5A-EL) 2007-2009 Mazda CX-7 (AW6A-EL, AW6AX-EL) 2010-2011 Mazda CX-7 (FS5A-EL, AW6A-EL, AW6AX-EL) 2007-2010 Mazda CX-9 (AW6A-EL, AW6AX-EL) DESCRIPTION Some vehicles may exhibit various types of transmission concerns. Repair the transmission by referring to the following automatic transmission diagnosis procedure. Some vehicles can be repaired by replacing the concerned part and/or adjustment. Other vehicles may require automatic transmission replacement.

    REPAIR PROCEDURE 1. Oil Leak: FN4A-EL, FS5A-EL, AWA6A-EL, AWA6X-EL

  • 2. Noise: FN4A-EL, FS5A-EL, AW6A-EL, AWA6X-EL

  • 3. No Diagnostic Trouble Code Available (Shift Shock): FN4A-EL, FS5A-EL

  • The probable causes of large shift shock are as follows:

    1. When clutch burns, oil pressure is low or wrong oil is used, large shock occur in order to increase the oil pressure when shift delays. 2. Due to the oil pressure control failure by solenoid or control valve body, oil pressure increases and large shock occurs. 3. When solenoid drive circuit inside the computer is broken and oil pressure cannot be controlled, large shock occurs.

In case of 2, replace the control valve body. Before replacement, check the control valve body is broken by checking oil pressure. Also make sure the clutch is not burnt by smelling oil.

  • Both FN4A and FS5A have a solenoid control valve in the control valve body that works when shifting from 1st to 2nd and hold at 1st. If this solenoid control valve is stuck, all the concerns described above (steps 1 to 7) occur. In this case, the concern can be fixed with a valve body replacement (A/T unit replacement is not necessary).

    4. No Diagnostic Trouble Code Available (Shift Shock): AW6A-EL, AWA6X-EL

    5. No Diagnostic Trouble Code Available (Slip/Flare): FN4A-EL, FS5A-EL

    NOTE:

If clutch slip or engine flare occurs for more than 1 second when gear is not shifted, trouble code is stored in memory.

If trouble code is not stored in memory, the driver may misunderstand the gearshift feel as clutch slip.

If engine flares during gearshift, trouble code will not be stored in memory. Learning control system prevents engine flare. However, if the battery is removed during learning control system is activated, learned value will be erased and engine flare may occur again.

Please explain the following to the customer:

Customers sometimes misunderstand the symptom occurs during the following operation as clutch slip. "Release gas pedal after depressing gas pedal in 2nd or higher gear".

The mechanism of the problem is as follows: o a. Shift is commanded by the system when depressing the gas pedal. o b. Shift continues after gas pedal released.

  • o c. When engine torque does not drop rapidly, engine flares. If the failure does not recur, ask customer about the details of the operation condition. If the

problem may be caused by the gas pedal operation, explain to the customer that there is no problem with the vehicle. 6. No Diagnostic Trouble Code Available (Slip/Flare): AW6A-EL, AW6AX-EL

  • NOTE:

Sometimes shift failure occurs because no trouble code is available. In this case, "the shift is actuated by sensor input error".

Shift can be actuated by acceleration sensor/vehicle speed sensor/range signal. Check if there are any errors in these output signals.

Access the GEAR_RA, GEAR_SEL and THOP PIDs using M-MDS and check if there are any signals that are far out of specification. 8. No Diagnostic Trouble Code Available (Shift Failure): AW6A-EL, AW6AX-EL

  • NOTE:

If the engine stalls only when shifted to R, it is suspected that lockup control solenoid in control valve body is stuck in on position, which results in torque converter lockup clutch engagement and engine stall.

However, even if lockup control valve is stuck, both FN4A and FS5A units are designed to prevent engine stall and enable forward movement in D range as fail-safe function.
