You’ve spent the last 12 years of your life preparing for this period of your life. Graduation! I’m so honored and flattered to be able to spend a small part of that time with you and help you capture the essence of who you are, what you stand for, and where you’re headed.

This shoot is all about you! It’s your time to shine and show the world what you’re all about. Included in this magazine you’ll find everything you need to know to prepare for your shoot, and to make sure you get the most out of it. However, the most important tip I can give you is to relax and have fun with it!

During the weeks approaching your shoot, I’ll be sending you additional information via email, and will be available for any additional questions you might have. YOUR SESSION

YOUR SENIOR SHOOT TIMELINEYour senior year is full of important dates and things to remember, so my job is to make this as easy as possible for you! I’ve outlined below the key pieces of information to help you approach your shoot in a relaxed and organized manner. The less you have to think about, the less stressed you’re going to be and the more fun you’re going to have with the whole experience!

CHOOSE THE LOCATION

One of the first things you’ll want to do in planning your shoot is to select the location. If we’ve already had a consultation, then this step is likely already taken care of. The location of the shoot will help determine the feel and style of the shoot. In addition, you’ll need to make sure that any permits are (or permission is) obtained if the property is privately owned.

DECIDE ON THE TIME

The time of the shoot is also an important factor in determining the look and feel of the images. For example, do you love the look of the city lights in at night, or would you prefer the hazy, back-lit look of the setting sun? Morning, mid-day, evening, night, all great options, but all very different options. If you’re unsure of what you want, please get in touch with me and I’ll help you determine the best time for the look you’re going for.

BOOK YOUR HAIR AND MAKEUP

As soon as we determine the date and time of the shoot, you’ll want to book your hair and makeup appointment. This usually takes about an hour and half, so depending on where your shoot is taking place, you’ll want to plan accordingly. If you decide you’d like to have your hair and makeup done by one of my contracted salons, you can get their contact information in the style guide section of the magazine.

PLAN YOUR OUTFITS

There is a whole section dedicated to the styling of your shoot and your outfit selection, but the basic idea is to

dress to your style, but with a little more flair and edge. Take the selection of your outfits seriously, and be sure to select clothing that describes you and at the same time flatters you.

“GETTING TO KNOW YOU” QUESTIONNAIRE

I want to get to know you as much as possible before the shoot. Our pre-shoot consultation can give me a glimpse, but the “Getting to Know You” questionnaire is the best opportunity for you to tell me who you are, what you’re into, and what makes you tick. It’s not super long, and the questions are fun. Take your time in answering them, and be as candid as possible.

THE SHOOT! ! !

The big day has arrived! Come prepared to have fun. Don’t get too worked up about how you’re going to pose, or what you should do to get great images. I’ll guide you through the whole shoot and direct every move. Just come ready to relax and enjoy being the center of attention for a couple hours. Also, be sure to eat before the shoot, if you’re like me you’re a lot more grumpy when you’re hungry.

THE PROOFING SESSION

About a week or so after your shoot, we’ll hold a proofing session in your home (or in the studio if you prefer). This is when you’ll be able to view your gallery of images and I’ll walk you through the process of placing your order. Orders typically take 3-4 weeks for prep, printing, and shipping, so be sure to plan accordingly if you have any important deadlines you’re trying to reach.

CLOTHING

Clothing is one of the most important parts of your senior session and along with your location, will set the mood or “look” of your session. I recommend you bring up to 3 clothing changes to your session. Included in this magazine is a clothing guide to help you in selecting your outfits.

SKIN

Please let me know if you don’t want to show any tattoos or other marks that you may have. Because peeling skin does not look attractive in photos, please avoid over-sunning or sunburn. Do not worry about minor breakouts, or complexion problems. These can be fixed post-session. Heavy breakouts can also be retouched, but may require an additional retouching fee.

SMALL DETAILS

Small details matter. Please have your nails neatly trimmed and polished. Don’t forget your toes! As tempting as it might be, I do not recommend trying out new hairstyles or coloring in the event you are not satisfied with the outcome. Bring along any hair accessories or hats for easy style changes.

PROPS AND ACCESSORIES

If you play a sport, have a hobby, or want to document something important in your life, please feel free to bring accessories or clothing to the photo session. It makes for fun and unique images.

MAKEUP

As for makeup, slightly heavier makeup photographs well. However, if you’re doing your own, be sure not to over do it. Pay extra attention to the eye makeup, and avoid clumps in the mascara. Many girls will wear false eyelashes to enhance their eyes. To eliminate shine, please remember to bring along translucent powder. Jewelry is best kept simple; we want the focus to be on you!

A NOTE TO THE SENIOR

Parents are welcome to join us for the shoot. Depending on your teen, I may ask that we be given some space. I’ve found that often a child, whether of school age or teen-age, tend to be more hesitant or reserved in front of an audience, especially parents. By separating ourselves slightly, and giving them some space, they tend to blossom in front of the camera.

So many things are special about who you are. While they may seem like small details, these are the things that tell YOUR story. It may be your favorite book, or possibly the shoes you wear. It could be as simple as the unassuming jewelry you love or the letterman’s jacket you’ve worked so hard to earn. These are the smaller, sometimes unnoticed details that tell the story of your life, that we document for you at Boka Studios. It’s all a part of your distinct personality those small somethings that define who you are and set the course for where you’re going.

shoot last fall. We were blessed with a beautiful (if not a tad toasty) fall day, not a cloud in the sky. Natalie’s

mother joined us as we roamed South Lyon for Natalie’s shoot. We were able to find some beautiful vegetation, a nice bridge, and great country store to wrap it all up.

How can you be prepared for one of the biggest days of your life so far? Here, Natalie shares:

Congratulations! The year you’ve been working towards your whole life (or at least it feels that way sometimes!) has arrived at last. What better way to capture this time to remember than a senior portrait session that leaves cookie-cutter poses and looks behind and lets the true you shine? In your mind’s eye you probably already have an idea of what you want your portraits to look like--fashionable, pulled together, and, if we’re honest, maybe even the envy of your friends. The only problem is how to get from here--sitting dreaming about the final look of your portraits--to there--the final, smashing result. What on earth are you going to wear and how are you going to make this happen?

To help, this guide has been designed with you, the high school senior, in mind. By planning ahead and thinking about both the big and small details of what you are going to wear, your session will go smoothly and the result will undoubtedly be a collection of images that you absolutely love.

Along with helpful hints to create your look--everything from fashion to the hair, makeup, and accessories needed to take a look from okay to stunning--this guide also offers a great selection of fun fashion links to get you started. Don’t forget to check out those in the back!

Before you read further, think about the last time you felt really good about the way you looked. How did you feel on the inside? Chances are it was terrific! It’s a proven fact that putting some effort into appearance can help anyone feel amazing. Yes! How you look can directly affect how

you feel. That is a good thing when it comes to your senior portraits because you can totally control the outside and the rest will fall into place, ensuring the fabulous senior portraits you desire!

STYLING YOUR

LOOKDuring the shoot, we typically have time for three outfits. However, we encourage our seniors to bring extra outfits and accessories if you want us to help piece together your looks. The best plan of action is to bring at least a few different looks that look good, coordinate well, and fit the look for which you are going. You want to keep it modern (like YOU!) and timeless at the same time. The location(s) of your session should also help determine what you are going to wear. Will your photographer be shooting in an urban area? In a studio? At a country farm? In and around your house? Find out and plan your outfits accordingly. Think about the settings in some of your favorite fashion ads and note how those environments enhance but don’t detract from the clothing and the subject.

Collect looks that you like for ideas. You can check out magazines, store mannequins, visit online shops, fashion blogs, or local boutiques to get ideas for your session outfits. Look at all the little details of ensembles you like--clothes, makeup, hair, accessories. By simply starting to notice how professionals put cohesive looks together, you’ll begin to learn from their processes and eventually begin

to create outfits of your own that look professionally styled.

Try on your clothes way before your session. You want only the most flattering looks for your senior portraits, so go through your closets first and figure out what looks good and what doesn’t from the clothing you already have. When you try on each piece of clothing, look at yourself in a mirror and ask yourself the following questions:

• Does it look good?• Does it fit me right?• Does it flatter my body? • Is it a great color for me?• Can I recreate looks I like

with pieces I already have in my closet?

Again, always keep in mind where you will be shooting your session when planning your choices.

Tops, jackets, and vests should fit correctly and flatter your chest, tummy, and arms. Always make sure you are selecting a fit that compliments your figure. A good fit is one that skims the body, makes you look smooth, and is neither too tight nor too loose. Don’t forget to bring a stylish, casual jacket or sweater (or two or three) to your session to layer on top of different shirts or dresses for fun looks. You can also bring shirts with buttons and cute little collars or looser fitting tops that gather around the waist. Closer fitting, nice t-shirts can be layered under a jacket or sometimes even worn alone. While small details like lace, piping, buttons, and ruffles can be stunning, avoid most plaids or shirts with large patterns. A solid color will almost always be the best choice.

WARDROBE AND STYLING

A GUIDE FOR GIRLS

Even if your arms are in-shape and toned, it is best to steer clear of shirts or dresses with spaghetti straps or sleeveless tops. Sleeve length is an important component of creating a modern yet timeless finished look and when being photographed, the most flattering choices for most girls will be tops with sleeves. Tank tops should only be worn if they are layered under another piece of clothing. If you really have your heart set on wearing a tank top (layered with a cute vest, a scarf, or a chunky necklace, for example), make absolutely sure you feel great in it and bring a cute little sweater or jacket for layering to vary the look. If you do decide to include a sleeveless top, dress, or formal as one of your outfits, make sure it fits beautifully and flatters your figure, especially your arms and shoulder area.

Jeans, pants, or skirts that sit correctly on your hips are also very important. A tighter tank top can be tucked into your jeans and layered under a top to help slim your waistline if needed. By choosing modern jeans that fit well and are not overly low fitting on your waist, you can create a slim look that flatters your waistline. If you do elect a lower-waisted jean, pair it with a looser-fitting, longer top. If heels or boots finish off your outfit, make sure the jean or pant length is neither too short nor too long. While ideal jean length varies with the style, a general rule of thumb is that your pant’s hem should rest comfortably on the top of your shoes. Pair skirts with the right top to create a balanced silhouette. And always remember: it’s the tiniest details that make the biggest difference.

Layering clothing and accessories is a fun way to add dimension and texture to the feel of your senior portraits. Use what you have (like that pink tee with the cap sleeves and your coolest, most

flattering jeans) and combine that with new stuff (necklace, fun vest, and awesome heels) to create layered looks that appear to be straight out of a magazine. Make sure you don’t forget about fun and coordinating accessories like belts, necklaces, earrings, scarves, or jackets, because . . .

THE BLINGAccessories bring a look together. Jackets, sweaters or shrugs, belts, necklaces, scarves, earrings, and maybe even fashion-forward tights are the finishing touches of a well-thought-out look for your senior portraits. Use one or two accessories to complete an outfit and make it look polished. Don’t be tempted to overdo it, just go for a complete look. Coco Chanel said it best: when accessorizing, always take off the last thing you put on. For example, if you choose to wear a necklace with your shirt and ¾ length sleeved jacket, skip the big earrings and the scarf, as that will make your top area look too busy.

The right pair of shoes or boots can make or break an outfit. Trendy boots can look amazing when paired with the right dress or pair of jeans. High heels or cute flats are always fun, too, when paired with the right top, skirt, or dress. Plan the shoes you are going to wear when you are planning your outfits and treat them as an accessory to make your look perfect; bring at least a couple of pairs with you. If your shoes show your tootsies, make sure your toenails look nice!

Also remember . . . please do not include any clothes with name-brand logos among your choices. It is just too casual looking and distracting for your senior portraits, although graphics on clothing is fine as long as it is part

of the whole look. Finally, be sure to bring something your mom or dad (or grandma) loves to see you in, if for no other reason than it would be a nice thing to do!

HAIR APPARENTSome girls like to have their hair professionally styled on the day of their session and some like to do it themselves. You may be an expert at styling your own hair, but for your senior portraits it’s sometimes a good idea to enlist a professional hair stylist’s help to give you advice. Make an appointment with your stylist (or the stylist your photographer recommends) two to three weeks before your session for a consultation about different styles you might want to create. Talk with her/him about what you are thinking of wearing, and take in some magazine pictures of hair styles that you like and ask if they might look flattering on you. Get your hair color touched up and a tiny trim if needed. Going in for a consultation plenty of time before your session gives you time to practice at home (if you are doing it on your own) or to make an appointment (for it to be styled professionally on the day of your session).

Your goal is to be naturally lovely on the day of your session, so elaborate or fancy hair styles (nix the plans for the prom do, please) are not recommended. Think fresh, natural, fun and finished (meaning well thought out, just like your clothing choices). However you style your hair, make sure you are comfortable and confident with the look. Remember, too, that if you are planning on changing your hair look during the session, bring the necessary tools (clips, combs, spray, a mirror) to do so and always throw in your brush and some spray!

ABOUT FACEExquisitely applied makeup: flawless complexion, gorgeous eyes, perfectly pouted lips. This is the stuff of magazines, yes? No! This is the stuff of your senior portraits! The best, easiest way to ensure this look of perfection is to schedule an appointment with a professional makeup artist who has been trained to bring out your natural beauty. By having your makeup and hair done on the day of the session, you’ll have less to worry about and guaranteed professional results. Another alternative is to visit a makeup counter at your local mall to have your makeup applied, although this will require a bit more running around on the day of the session and will leave more of the final outcome to chance as well. Finally, you can also apply your own makeup if you choose, an option that can be especially fun if you have an interest in makeup and fashion. Whatever you decide to do, whether going the DIY route or the professional one, you will want a dewy, fresh look that looks hip yet classic.

Here are some basic tips if you choose to do it yourself: Start with a light foundation, tinted moisturizer or mineral makeup that matches your skin tone perfectly. Apply cover-up to any blemishes, blend well, and finish with a light dusting of facial powder. Use a neutral, natural-colored blush--you’re going for a slightly flushed look here. Covering up blemishes helps your photographer when he or she is editing your images. If you are self-conscious at all about your complexion, don’t be afraid to mention it to your photographer so he or she can provide a level of Photoshop “cover-up” that you are comfortable with.

For your eyes, it is important to think about what you will be wearing and pick colors that compliment

your skin tone and eye color. Think natural and neutral with a finished look. Choose one to three colors (light, medium, and dark) of eye shadow. Apply the lightest color to the entire area of your eyelid, the darker color to the crease of your eyelid, and if you want, the medium color in between the crease and your top lashes. You

then want to blend very well. If you would like, use a cream or penciled eyeliner (a darker neutral color is best–browns and grays) on the top lid, applying from the outside of your lashes to just where your lashes end, closer to your nose. Line the bottom lid if you prefer, but do so very lightly and blend well. If you need to, use your eyelash curler and add some dark brown or black mascara to finish off. Applying only on the top lashes and right at the bottom of the corner lashes will always result in the most natural look. Don’t neglect to brush out your lashes to avoid a clumpy mess. Finally, where eye makeup is concerned you’ll always want to forego the following: sparkly eye shadow, heavy black eyeliner on the inside or bottom of your eyes, and goopy mascara. These do not match the glowing, fresh-faced look that will bring out your natural beauty!

Finish up your makeup application by applying a tinted lip gloss or lightly glossy natural-colored lipstick to your lips. If you want to line your lips, make sure that you choose a liner that matches your lip color exactly and line the inside only. Follow up with a clear gloss; a bit of shine to your lips

is fine, but just like the eyes, skip the sparkly lipstick or gloss. Don’t forget to bring along your makeup bag to the session in case you need a touch-up, and be certain to practice a couple of times before the day of your session to get your makeup just right. Include your powder or blotting papers and lip gloss in your “day of” kit too!

MANI-PEDI

TIMETalk about tiny details that make a huge difference! Chipped polish draws attention to your hands (in a bad way) and well-manicured nails are a must. It doesn’t really matter whether you go polished or natural, just don’t forget to give nails some special care.

Relaxed + confident + happy = great senior portraits.

You certainly don’t want anything as tiny as fingernails taking away from YOU in your portraits. This goes for toenails, too, if it is summer . . . do you really know if your photographer will have you kick off your shoes for some carefree barefoot looks? It might be fun, so just be prepared! Soft, relatively neutral shades rather than wild hues are favored if you do choose the polished look. Professional mani-pedis can be fun, but this is one part of the prep you can easily do yourself too.

GLOWExfoliate your skin with a salt or sugar scrub and moisturize face, hands, elbows, and legs so that any skin showing looks as soft as possible. A little bit of summer color is okay (fake or real), but please don’t go overboard with sun or bed tanning or self-tanning products in the week before your session. Skin that is unnaturally dark (or--eek!--orange) because of tanning or tanning products does not look naturally beautiful in portraits.

jUST BE YOUDon’t forget to include identity clothing that can visually “define” your interests in an image. Are you involved in any sports or school-related activities? By including the uniforms and props that make

your activity or sport unique, you add an extra special dimension to your portraits. Don’t bring just the actual uniform, either, but rather make sure to include the pompoms if you cheer or a volleyball or basketball if you’re on the team (bring the letterman’s jacket too!).

Think outside the box if you’re not involved in school activities. You may be in a band, so bring your guitar and mike. You may love to read or ride horses. Throw in your favorite book or arrange to have part of your session at the barn. Whatever the case may be, chances are pretty good that your photographer will adore you for bringing and thinking of things that are fun, unique, and different--some of the few things that make you you!

PUTTING IT ALL

TOGETHEREvery person on this earth is different. You have personality and physical traits that set you completely apart as an individual and–as cheesy as it may sound–you are unique and different from anyone else in the world! Your senior portraits are a celebration of this uniqueness, and following the preparations touched on in this guide will help you be relaxed, confident, and happy at your session. Now go get ready!

SHOP TALKIf you live in a bigger city, chances are that you have a shopping district with trendy shops and boutique--stores that sell modern looks all designed and displayed with an artist’s touch. While often more expensive, boutique finds add a unique feel to your senior portraits that other stores can’t simply because the clothes are less mainstream.

With that said, just because clothes are inexpensive doesn’t mean they can’t look good and make you feel great! Trendy stores that virtually every mall has, like Forever21, American Outfitters, and H&M, offer fantastic options that are considerably more affordable than a boutique. Of-the-moment, cool, inexpensive looks that work with the basics you already have in your closet abound. And fun accessories? Stores like this totally fit the bill. Add a necklace or a cool belt for just a few dollars. What a great way to be fashion forward and save some cash!

Want help or just feeling stuck? Ask for help! Most clothing stores have salespeople or stylists working for them. Corner salespeople whose style you love and beg for their help . . . that’s what they are there for!

Congratulations! The year you’ve been working towards your whole life (or at least it feels that way sometimes) has arrived at last. What better way to capture this time to remember than a senior portrait session that leaves cookie-cutter poses and faux “tuxes” behind? Okay . . . so maybe this was all your mom’s idea and you’re just humoring her, but now that you’re in this thing you want your portraits to look pulled together and, as a bonus, definitely cooler than your friends’ images! But what are you going to wear and how are you going to make this happen?

To help, this guide has been designed with you, the high school senior, in mind. By planning ahead and thinking about both the big and small details as you read this guide, you’ll pull your look together in a way that’s virtually painless. No, really. Let’s get started!

YOUR LOOKDuring your session, we will have time for 2-3 clothing changes. The best plan of action is to bring at least a few different looks that look good, coordinate well, and fit the look for which you are going. You want to keep it modern (like YOU) and timeless at the same time. The location(s) of your session should also help determine what you are going to wear. Will your session be in an urban area? from the clothing and the actor.

Remember that layering textured sweaters, just the right jacket, etc. can go a long way toward making your outfit not only comfortable and “you” but also appear to be right out of a magazine, video, or film.

Your senior portraits may not be that big of a deal to you, but you can be sure that they are for your folks (especially your mom!). What mom doesn’t want to see her “big” boy looking all cool and grown up? She will be so proud when she sees you planning just a bit to make these images the best they can be.

Also remember . . . please do not include any clothing items with name-brand logos in your clothing choices. It is just too casual looking and distracting for your senior portraits. A GUIDE FOR GUYS

THE SMALL STUFFGet your hair cut at least a couple of weeks before the shoot, not a couple of days prior. This will give it time to get just right length-wise. You most definitely want to be clean shaven as well and, ideally, have your complexion at its best. As long as we’re talking hair (you might want to be sitting down for this), you might consider--just maybe--a little eyebrow waxing. Embracing this idea that might seem crazy at first is a small price to pay for ditching the unibrow. Trust us. Similarly, neatly clipped nails rather than scraggly nubs are always preferable.

Believe it or not, your choice of shoes can also make all the difference in your finished portraits. Yes, you may not have a lot to choose from, but make sure you nix the tattered ones and put some thought into the shoes you are going to wear. Good choices are always Converse, Vans, or trendy leather--either choice looks good with jeans or a dressier look. involved in any sports or school related activities? By including the uniforms and props that make your activity or sport unique, you add an extra special dimension to your portraits. Don’t bring just the actual uniform, either, but rather make sure to include the football or basketball if you’re on the team. Don’t forget that letterman’s jacket either!

Think outside the box if you’re not involved in school activities. You may be in a band, so bring your guitar. You may love to fix vintage cars or ride horses. Arrange to

have part of your session at the garage or at the barn. Whatever the case may be, chances are pretty good that we will think you are a genius for bringing and thinking of things that are fun, unique, and different--some of the few things that make you you!

The initial investment To book a shoot with Boka Studios is $750. This deposit covers your session fee and includes

Portraits size 11x14 and larger come mounted. Texturizing is also available at no extra cost if requested. Please specify if you prefer not to have your images mounted.

Unmounted prints are recommended if you plan to mat and frame your print; mounted is recommended if you plan to frame without a mat.

coffee Table storybook album

storyboards
