Dear Parents and Carers Welcome to the first newsletter of the academic year 2010-11. I trust that you all had an enjoyable and relaxing summer- students and staff alike have returned refreshed and relishing the year ahead. I would like to begin by paying tribute to the fantastic achievements of last year’s cohort of year 11 students. Their record performance was testament to their very hard work and commitment, complemented by the support of parents and the dedication of our highly skilled and caring staff. No pressure then on our current year 11 learners! I would also like to thank parents for their support regarding uniform: our young people are looking very smart indeed. Our challenge is to maintain this high standard over the coming winter months. Further to which, may I please remind you that hoodies are not to be worn to school. The only jumpers permitted are the official grey or black items. Students may wear one wrist bracelet and this ought to be in support of a charity or Her Majesty’s Forces The Bohunt ERA has been further deepened and augmented by significant works this summer. We have refurbished A Block, C Block (including a new heating system), G block and created a café and exhibition area in F block. We have a brand new Dance Studio and are finishing work on our exciting new Dynamic Learning Environment which features state of the art ICT, flexible furniture, interactive table tops, ‘ideas paint’ walls, i-touches and a green screen! In response to parental feedback, we are repeating and extending our curriculum evenings: for year 11 on 7 October and year 10 the following Thursday (14 October). These are not consultation evenings but, rather, their purpose is to help parents to understand and support students in achieving their potential. These are exciting times for learning at Bohunt School and if you would like to become involved in the School’s Governance, please do consider becoming a Parent Governor (details on page 12). Should you feel unable to commit the requisite time and energy to governance, please do consider becoming involved with the Parent Support Group- contact Lois Hudson [email protected] for further details. Might I conclude by welcoming again all of our parents who are new to the school and wish all our families a successful academic year 2010-11. With my very best wishes. Neil Strowger

Greenland Trip—Fundraising
In the summer of 2011, twenty-six highly motivated students from Bohunt School will head to Greenland on an incredible educational expedition. The trip has two aims: 1. To undertake an expedition
in a remote area for the purposes of developing teamwork, independence, confidence, enterprise and leadership.
2. To carry out proper
science that links to the school curriculum and engages different cultures and communities.
The expedition is likely to be the greatest challenge the students have faced: they have to fundraise nearly £3000 each, train for the extreme environment (including wild-camping in the Lakes in
January) and plan the expedition themselves. The team have been fundraising hard and all manner of schemes and events have been put on: cake sales, sponsored bike rides and swims, bag packing, car boot sales, craft fairs, odd jobs, babysitting and much, much more. Now they are getting even more ambitious in their methods: On Wednesday 6 October, 7.30-9pm, Dr Mike Stroud OBE (polar explorer, collaborator with Sir Ranulph Fiennes and fitness expert) will be talking about his adventures in support of their trip. Tickets are £5 for adults and £3 for concessions (available from Bohunt Reception). The evening will also feature a
raffle, refreshments and an auction of promises. On Friday 8 October, 7.30-9pm, some of the team have organised a gig. Tickets are £3.50 in advance (again from reception) and £4.50 on the door. As well as getting their finances in order, the team have also been preparing for their first training weekend which is to the Peak District over the first weekend in October. During the weekend the team will be briefed on the expedition, the kit they will need and what training they will go through. They will also complete some team building exercises and spend a day in the hills.

Languages Results at Bohunt This summer saw languages results rise to 73% - our best ever! This high percentage of the cohort leaving with a grade C at GCSE or above in a foreign language is double the national average and will help these students in the very tough competition ahead for university places! In addition, many students left us with 2 GCSEs in languages or an AS level as well; students gained NVQ, GCSE and AS level qualifications in French, Spanish, German, Italian, Russian, Japanese and Polish. 22 students achieved Level 2 in NVQ French/Spanish. This equates to a C grade at GCSE and the students involved appreciated the practical, business-orientated nature of this course. German NVQ courses are also now being followed by learners in Year Ten and Eleven. Several AS students have gone on to study A2 Languages at local colleges after obtaining A and B grades. We were delighted to learn that ex student Henry Ascoli obtained A* in A2 French at Alton College after just one year’s study, following
on from his AS at Bohunt in 2009. An exciting development this year, is our first ever CLIL group. Immersion teaching aims to replicate learners' assimilation of a first language and CLIL teaching aims to bring "real" content and learning, about themes from other subject areas, into students' foreign language lessons. 7D will be "immersed" in French during tutor time each morning as well as studying ICT, Science and PSCRE through the medium of French. Their tutors, Madame Perdu and Madame Roulette-Jervis, have commented on their enthusiasm and commitment. Year Six students at Liphook Junior School will also take part in the CLIL project by studying the water cycle, to be taught in French in the Autumn term. In the two following terms, we will deliver other content lead language teaching to students at our other main feeder primary schools. The vast majority of Year Eight and Nine Students have also just started to study a second foreign language alongside their first one. French, German and Spanish are on offer and teachers are already impressed by the students’ knowledge from primary learning. Italian, Japanese and German after
school clubs will start very shortly. We also welcome our Language Assistants in French, German and Spanish in October. Trips and visits are always popular and an essential part of learning a language. This Spring our Year Eight and Nine exchanges to France, Germany and Spain were a great success while Year Eleven enjoyed the weather on an exchange in . This academic year, we will run Year Seven residential trips to France, Germany and Spain, while Year Eight trips will combine history and languages by visiting Ypres en route to the Pas De Calais area or the Rhine Valley. We hope to take year 8 Spanish learners' to study some issues surrounding the Spanish Civil war at Guernica. Exchange dates for 2011 are currently being arranged with our partner schools! A Languages Focus Day for year 9 is planned for 19 October when our classrooms will turn into cafés for a day, allowing students to prepare, order and serve authentic dishes to one another, using the languages they learn. - There's a lot to look forward to!! Parent Reminders
Their reaction to coming into contact with nuts and nut products can be very serious indeed. Thank you
for your thoughtfulness.
I would like to remind parents of their right to discuss with the Headteacher the participation of their children in sex education lessons and religious education lessons (including any assembly/meeting that may contain a religious theme). As ever, we exercise great care and judgement in the delivery of all curriculum materials that may be deemed of a sensitive nature or encourage students to reflect on their own beliefs and values, and have always enjoyed an extremely high level of participation and success in such work. Should you have any questions about this please do not hesitate to contact
the school.
LATE/SICK STUDENTS
• If a student arrives late for school, and after tutor time in the morning, they
must sign in at reception
• If taken ill during the school day students must go to Miss Gabriel, Welfare Officer, before
telephoning home
If a student has an appointment outside school e.g. dentist, they should bring in a note from their parent for their tutor’s attention the day before the appointment is
due

ATTENDANCE
May I remind parents of school policy with regard to the authorisation of absences from school. We value the high levels of attendance we see at Bohunt and encourage parents to consider the adverse effect of avoidable absence (e.g. for holidays in term time) on the
academic progress of their children. Accordingly such requests will be considered on their individual merit and will rarely be granted in years 10 and 11 (the GCSE examination years) and at times in other year groups during, or in the lead up to, examinations. However I recognise that exceptional circumstances may prevail and I would ask that parents contact their son/daughter’s tutor or Achievement Co-ordinator to discuss the need for absence in such cases.
Leave of Absence forms can now be downloaded from our website. Reception will continue to hold a supply if this is a more convenient source
for you.
PHOTOGRAPHS
We often take pictures of students involved in a wide range of lessons, performances and activities (including fieldwork) and in recognition of special achievements. Occasionally these photos are used in publications and in the press. We are always very conscious of child protection procedures and exercise great care in this regard, but if you do not want your son/daughter’s photo ever to be used in
this way please let us know.
NUT ALLERGIES
I would ask that parents exercise care and consideration towards the small number of students in the school with a nut allergy when planning the contents of lunch boxes.
It is very important that these procedures are followed as we need to know at all times who is
on site.
Reminder --- Students are not to walk through the car park - keep to the paths, please!

If you are a parent who has recently divorced or separated this may be the workshop for you. When you go through a divorce or separation, it’s a bit like starting a journey that you didn’t intend to go on. Your hopes and expectations for the future, for both you and your children, will have now changed. This 2 session workshop is to help you to take this
journey in the most positive and realistic way possible. Though it may not be easy, you can make some decisions that will have a positive effect on how your children experience the break-up. At the workshop, nobody will judge you and you only need to talk about what you want to share in that forum. All information is confidential. This course is not about dealing with

Languages at Bohunt
A number of students at Bohunt are lucky enough to speak English at school and another language fluently at home with family and friends. Several others in our school community have lived in many different countries outside the UK, before moving to our local area. These students formed a group last academic year to discuss their experiences with each other, Mrs Bevan (Languages teacher) and
Mrs Hartless (EAL co-ordinator). Students brought along photos and souvenirs. It was great fun to share stories and make friends in other year groups. Jess and Christine were able to compare their time spent in South Africa. Raam showed us beautiful architecture from India and some written Hindi. As a Language College we are proud of the many languages taught at the school and spoken at home by our staff and students.

Bohunt Appeal Trust
Thank you to those parents of year 7 students who have returned completed Bohunt Appeal Trust Gift Aid forms that were distributed at the Meet the tutor Evening. As was made clear on the evening, one of the main advantages of having the Trust in place is that we will never ask parents to help at jumble sales, fetes or other time consuming activities. However to continue to assist the school the Bohunt Appeal Trust must continue to receive the support of parents. Now and in the future. If you feel that you can

In order to offer parents and carers the opportunity to talk to the Headteacher and representatives of the Governing Body about any issues of concern, we will be holding termly drop-in clinics. An appointment is not absolutely necessary but is preferable in order to eliminate waiting times. The first clinic will run from 6 to 8pm on Thursday 18 November. Ms. Shaw’s year 9 students ‘Trash Fash’ – clothes designed and constructed from materials usually thrown out - was a great success. They have become the central part of the East Hants ‘Art of Recycle’ exhibition which started off in Petersfield square at the start of August, moving on to Bordon
and will appear once again at Alton College in late September. It became a real talking point and photos will be appearing on the East Hants website. Also on sale during the Petersfield exhibition were bags knitted from plastic which went down well selling out before the end of the afternoon. Well done to those who

Hampshire Schools Recycling Programme
Bohunt School has been awarded “Most Innovative School” for our recycling initiatives in conjunction with the Recycle for Hampshire Schools recycling programme for Summer 2010.
The team were really impressed with our efforts in setting up recycling systems around the school trying to reduce waste. Money and awareness was raised via cake stalls and a picnic to fund the purchase of recycling bins. A large
display has been set up in the Entrance Hall to raise awareness further. Recycle for Hampshire have requested use of the Bohunt School initiatives as a case study in their new information pack for Secondary schools. So
using Bohunt as an example of what can be achieved. This is a truly great accolade and congratulations must go to Mrs Lansley and her Green Team who have worked so hard to keep this initiative moving forward.

Bohunt’s ‘Ecozone’ pond has come to life this year, rewarding the efforts of governors, parents, staff and students to create the pond over the last three years. Students from many classes in both lower and upper school have already used the pond this Summer for ecology studies and have discovered an promisingly diverse flora and fauna. This bodes well for the future. Two species of Damsel fly and three species of Dragonfly have been seen flying and hunting over and around the pond. Students have discovered both
The Bohunt Wildlife Pond
Dragonfly and Damselfly larvae on pond-dipping excursions. They have also seen a host of other aquatic life such as Waterboatmen, pond Skaters, diving beetles and Whirlygig Beetles, and newts. The resource is also attracting larger visitors such as birds and one of these is a Little Owl, pellets from which were discovered by the gate leading in to the area. There is still very much more to be done, and there are plans for creating a range of habitats over the coming year to make this an ever richer teaching and learning resource for Bohunt

Cope Trip to Bristol At the end of April 2010, 8 year 10 CoPE students travelled to Bristol to showcase work they had completed on their course. The group put together pictures and information on their ‘Donutting’ trip to Guildford Ski centre in February 2010. The students spent just over an hour at the centre experiencing the leisure activity and had a very eventful afternoon. Dan Beasley (11T) put together a DVD of the trip with photos, video
clips and music to show at the ASDAN presentation event held at Bristol Zoo in April 2010. Rebecca Boxall (11S) presented the DVD at the celebration event which proved to be a great success. Due to the distance the students had to travel, they camped out for the night, which again, provided evidence towards the students’ CoPE qualification. They also managed to squeeze in a trip to laser quest and pizza hut for evening food and entertainment before returning to sleep under the stars.

The students also visited Sagrada Familia, Olympic Stadium and Museum, Barcelona FC stadium, the Nou Camp, Barcelona’s Aquarium and the theme park Port Aventura.
The students had undertaken a weekly Spanish lesson run by Mrs Bevan and assisted by Mr Tanner and Mr Sheldrick, where the students developed basic Spanish terms to help them interact with the other teams whilst they were away. Both teams shared the same results, winning one game and losing two games. The fixtures were extremely competitive and certainly developed both teams with the experience that was gained from playing against teams from a different country

SCHOOL COMMUNICATIONS
Since last September, we have been keeping parents informed using our new E-Comms System. We have had a vary positive response to the information we are sending out. Parents are delighted that they are actually receiving information—student post has a habit of going astray! With our School Communication System we can now e-mail parents on the first day of a child’s absence if we have not received an explanation for it, a member of staff will call parents and, as a trial, e-mail. Please make sure that we have an up to date e-mail address or an address that will be accessed regularly in order that a reason for absence may be given as soon as possible. If you do not wish to be contacted in this way, please let us know and we will continue to phone. Please email [email protected] if you have a new email address
