CleartrreeeeThe importance of Dynamic RangeOur eyes are very adaptive and they are also more sensitive to intensity than colour.

CleartrreeeePrinting uses a subtractive processl Additive colour mixing describes how the eye

interprets light to create our perception of colour.

l Subtractive colour mixing describes the colours that result when light absorbing substances are mixed.

CleartrreeeeSo – Printing is “different” to PDI/Web/TV/iPADl Smaller dynamic range so images look dullerl Uses subtractive colours not additive (counter intuitive!)l More capital outlay (for printer)l Higher running costs (media, ink, mistakes!)l But:

l Can be any size l Can make use of all your image information (5kx7k pixels)l Always available for display (no power needed)l Can be hung on your walll Can be put in an albuml Gives added “pleasure” to create l “Reaches the parts other formats cannot reach”!

CleartrreeeeDIY printing versus Use a service

DIYl Instant gratificationl Easy tuningl Wide variety of papersl Wide variety of finishesl “All your own work” BUTl Start-up costs are highl Paper costs can be highl Ink costs can be highl Needs some expertisel Can be fiddly

Servicel No printing expertise

neededl No start-up costsl No maintenance costsl Great paper (Archive

quality)l 24 hour turn around BUTl Limited choice of papersl Mistakes can be expensivel Tuning is in the hands of

the service provider

Page 9: BognorCC techniques workshops Basic guide to printing with Chi …selseycameraclub.co.uk/download/i/mark_dl/u/4011871632... · Chichester Uni Print Shop lAspect ratios lFinal sizing

CleartrreeeeCommon tasks to both approachesl Choose aspect ratio for print (may be different to

paper)l Choose colour space/profile for printer/paper

combination (even for services)l Choose output format if using Adobe Elements

(jpg or PDF) depending on print requirementl Output density 300ppil For Bognor Regis Camera Club competitions:

l Prints need to be a minimum of 226 sq cm mounted on a card with a maximum size of 50cm x 40cm.

So what makes a print worth printing?

Page 10: BognorCC techniques workshops Basic guide to printing with Chi …selseycameraclub.co.uk/download/i/mark_dl/u/4011871632... · Chichester Uni Print Shop lAspect ratios lFinal sizing

CleartrreeeeWhat makes a good Club Standard print?

l Communicates your vision, Why take it, why share it.l Fits the subject matter of the competition clearly, or

tongue in cheek?l Shows what you want to show unambiguouslyl Has immediate impact, but keeps the viewer interestedl Tells a story, ask questions of the viewer, creates an

emotional response in the viewer.l Should be simple, rather than busy and complicated with

lots of different points of interest.

CleartrreeeePhotographs that work …..

• are eye catching• are strongly composed.• have relatively few picture elements.• have no elements surplus to requirements.• use lighting and or surface reflections to achieve the best possible

tonality.• contain a limited colour palette which either contrasts or

complements each other• have an emotional message of some sort• leave you satisfied - but wanting more!• inform by showing the unusual, the unnoticed or interesting

juxtapositions.• tell a story or trigger memories• give you reasons to come back to the image again and again• have some extra magical thing about them

……. Extracted from the book “Why Photographs Work" by George Barr.

CleartrreeeePreparing an image for a Print Competition – Top Tips

l ‘Rules’ of composition have developed in painting and photography because the human brain seems to like these layouts. The rule of thirds is one of the commonest used. Sometimes breaking the rules works too …

l It is often said that odd numbers of objects are more satisfying than even numbered.

l Red coloured objects attract our attention, so add impact to an object or location in an image.

l Avoid things that distract from your messagel Horizons should be level and verticals vertical or obviously

angled.

l Come to our Composition workshop Sat 26th October

CleartrreeeePreparing a print for a Club competition – Top Tipsl Try to avoid losing bits of people or key features at the edge,

cutting off a head or missing the top of a spire can be annoying. However, a deliberate crop of much of a face draws attention to what you want to show.

l The eye is drawn to light and lighter areas in an image, so the part you want the viewer to concentrate on should be a little lighter than the rest. Bright areas away from your point of interest will draw the eye away, even more so at the edges.

l The important part of the image needs to be sharp. Generally, the foreground needs to be sharp. A landscape usually all needs to be sharp.

l Some photographs need blur to indicate movement or a dreamy atmosphere, this is different from being out of focus.

See the Basic Image Processing workshop Sat 16th Nov

CleartrreeeePreparing a print for a Club competition – Top Tips

l The way it is presented (mounted) should enhance and not detract from the print.

l The mount must be 40 x 50 cm portrait or landscape, and of an appropriate colour, eg white, black or cream. Whacky colours or mount holes don’t impress the judges!.

l The print should sit comfortably inside this mount, neither too big or too small, e.g. 20 x 30 and 30 x 40cm. Check if there is a minimum print size in the competition rules. Rectangle, square, letterbox all work well.

l The print should be of good quality on a paper that suits the image, if unsure, a low gloss is often a safe bet. Outstanding quality printing on special papers has high impact.

See some ideas about mounts later in this presentation

CleartrreeeeCropping for effectl Metric papers sizes all have a common aspect ratio

mera sensors all have different aspect ratios!

l So images can’t be placed evenly on papers!

Paper size Dimensions (cm) L/W = Aspect ratioA4 29.7x21 29.7/21 = 1.414:1A3 42x29.7 42/29.7 = 1.414:1A2 59.4x42 59.4/42 = 1.414:1A3+SRA3

CleartrreeeeSizing for printingl As with PDIs it’s better to resize an image to meet the

final print size using some principles:l Printing looks pixelated if the density is less than

200ppil So a 10”x8” print needs (10”x200ppi)x(8”x200ppi)=2000x1600 pixelsl The RICOH machine at the Chi PrintShop prints at 300ppi so that

would be (10x300)x(8x300)=3000x2400 pixels (for a 10”x8” print).l If you want to “go Large!” then an SRA3 image (45cm x 32cm) needs

5315px x 3780px to print properly

CleartrreeeeLightroom & Sharpeningl Three forms of sharpening need to be consideredl Input sharpening for RAW files (counteract effects of

bayer filter)l Performed in the Detail->Sharpening tab of Developl Defaults applied on import

l Creative sharpening (used to emphasise one part of the image over another)l Performed using the Gradient Filter and Adjustment/radial brush

in Developl Output sharpening (according to target media / device)

l Performed in the Print module (Print Job ->Print Sharpening) if printing or

l in the Export module for all others (Export->Output Sharpening)

CleartrreeeeOutput sharpening for Printing at Printshopl Output sharpening restores what is lost by the output

generation processl When Exporting to JPEG (as used by Printshop) use

Sharpen I normally use appropriate “Media” (Glossy) and “low” for sharpening

l Ensure that you export at 300ppi (to give image enough pixels to avoid jagged edges)

CleartrreeeeMounts for your masterpiecesl BRCC would like you to participate in competitions with

your works so the next step is mounting them. l You can do it yourself

l Purchase mountboard from eg Pullingers.coml Daler Rowney Standard Mountboard A1 (See colour swatch)l £3.35 for A1 size but min order is 10 (each is 594mm x 841mm) l Club specs are 500mm x 400mml Can get 2 mount boards per A1 sheetl Club has mountboard cutter for hire or you can purchase one

l Or purchase readymade mountboards with aperturesl From Cotswold Mounts

l https://www.cotswoldmounts.co.uk/products/white-core-mounts/white-core-single-mounts-additional-sizes to find 40x50cm size

l £2.00 (min order 4 for £7.97 inc vat) uses Daler-Rowney card

CleartrreeeeAperturesl How big a hole in the mountboard do you want/need?l Too big?

l Surround is too thin to separate image from edgel Too small?

l Image is lost in mountl Artistic decision but here are some pointers:

l Some images are square by naturel Some images are panoramic l Better to crop image (with frame) than to leave dead space

l Making mounts reusable lowers cost of entire processl I use four different aperture sizes and can always fit my

images within one of them!
