ON an evening when the rest of the country was either glued to the TV or

milling around at vote counting stations,  Andrea Bocelli was turbo-

charging the atmosphere inside Putra Indoor Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

Anyone who thinks we are tight-wads should take a look at the packed

rows of seats (Arena) facing the stage. These cost RM1,888 and

RM2,888.

The cheapest seats on the upper tiers were RM388 and RM588. Those

who had pushed the significance of GE13 to the back of their minds,

The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, with the melodic and powerful

choral voices of the Dithyrambic Singers, helped lull the audience into an

enchanted garden of musical chords.

Lovers of classical music and operas experienced a memorable night

when Slovenia-born soprano Sabina Cvilak joined Bocelli on stage for

duets that brought the members of the audience to their feet multiple

times.

As if that was not enough to thrill the happy audience, an all-female

Italian soprano ensemble, Div4s, dressed in strikingly bright red gowns,

took the evening to another level where brilliant voices reigned supreme.

To the strains of Con Te Partiro, For A New Sun and Opera, the four

women swayed their bodies, escorting listeners to a realm of exquisitesensations that had many swooning with genuine delight.

When they accompanied Bocelli on several classical hits with the full

cooperation of the MPO, the acoustic effects generated were nothing

less than stunning.

Bocelli’s timbre resonated with the rhythm of the soul and reverberated

across the auditorium. It soared to the upper reaches of the stadium and

echoed gracefully across the walls of the cavernous interior.

It was an extraordinary vocal gift that ignited 1,000 neural thr ills within

each listener who heard him sing one of his final songs, Time To Say

Goodbye.

The Bocelli Phenomenon, as some critics have called it, had taken the

world by storm since 1992 when he was discovered by another famous

Italian tenor, Luciano Pavarotti.

In 1995 to 1997, Bocelli conquered Europe and Latin America. As fate

would have it, Bocelli partnered British soprano Sarah Brightman in

1996.

Bocelli and Brightman sang a duet, Con Te Partiro, which was later re-

titled Time To Say Goodbye, and the rest was history. The song shot

straight to No. 1 in the German music charts and stayed there for 14

weeks.

Bocelli’s appearance in Bukit Jalil Stadium on May 5 marked his first liveperformance in KL. The city is no stranger to world famous tenors who

have included Jose Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti.

The two-hour concert also witnessed the performance of the excellent

Spanish guitar duo, Carisma. The guitar couple delivered a most

enjoyable rendition of several compositions that drew rounds of

spontaneous applause.

Bocelli’s latest album, Passione, includes duets with pop artistes like

Nelly Furtado and Jennifer Lopez.

Some of the stirring numbers he sang that unforgettable night included

Puccini’s O Soave Fanciulla and Vissi D’arte, Brixio’s Mamma, Califano’s

Vieni Sul Mar and Verdi’s Brindisi.

This probably won’t be the last time he will be gracing our shores

because he has left an indelible mark in our memory and made our

hearts yearn for his voice again.
