I am sad to report that our wonderful Librarian, Mrs Karen Clarke has resigned effective from the end of this term. She is moving back to Christchurch for family reasons. We will be advertising for a replacement soon. TEACHING, LEARNING AND STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

• NCEA results were slightly disappointing. They were down a little in several areas. Interestingly National results show a similar decline. The three pleasing factors were the strong number of NCEA Level Two Excellence endorsements - 18%, a solid improvement in Maori student achievement and the strong results from our Year 10 students doing NCEA Level One Science and Maths. Level One Literacy and Numeracy rates were also very strong. There will be a separate report on NCEA Results attached.

• Our senior students of 2017 gained just three NCEA Scholarships - two in Physics and one in Chemistry. Clearly we need to completely revamp our programme for Scholarship. I have added this as an additional goal in the Annual Plan.

• Our new timetable structure is up and running. There have been some initial issues as we all get used to a new system.

EXTRA CURRICULAR

• Our cricket season is well underway. The 1st X1 had a narrow loss to Silverstream in their first Traditional. They won their first two regular competition games but were well beaten by Wellington College last weekend.

• We had a difficult “All –In” Day of Athletics in the first week of school when the weather forced us to abandon the event at about 2pm. Our second day which is our Interhouse competition was positive with some exciting performances on the track. We are reviewing whether we continue to involve all of the school in this day.

• We congratulate Liberato Cacace on his elevation to the Phoenix first team. PROMOTION AND COMMUNITY LINKS

• We have had an initial meeting of Principals of the Wellington Catholic Community of Learning. We are trying to complete our Achievement Challenge. No Lead Principal has yet been appointed.

• Our initial meetings with the Year 9 “Parents meet Tutor Teachers” evening and our NCEA Information Evening were well attended.

ENVIRONMENT AND RESOURCE ISSUES • Work on the Egden Block (Admin) reroofing is nearing completion. We expect the

scaffolding to be removed by early March. Planning for the seismic strengthening of this block is proceeding. Work on this part of the contract is likely to start before Easter. The aim is for the noisy work to be done between Easter and the end of the April holidays.

• Wellington Water has advised us that work on new large storm water pipes down Evans Bay Parade will begin in the next few weeks. This will cause some disruption to traffic.

HEALTH AND SAFETY We have had several student discipline issues to deal with in the first few weeks of school that have impacted on student safety. There are no issues to report from our Building Project.

Other Issues 1. I will send out separate reports on Progress against the 2017 Annual Plan and the

Draft 2018 Annual Plan for the Board to consider on Tuesday. 2. We have signed up to School Docs for our Policies. There is a lengthy list of material I

need to get to them which I am working on.

Summary of 2017 NCEA Results for the Board of Trustees - February 2018.

2016 93.5 71.4 86.5 83.4 62.9 92.2 89.1 77.12017 89.5 69.0 84.2 82.4 59.9 89.4 87.6 73.8

Commentary on Overall Results (Participation Based) - generally the results used by the Media. National results for 2017 about 2% lower than 2016. SPC results also between 2-4% lower. The drop at Year 11 & 12 is marginally higher than the national average. Decile 8-10 show a similar pattern.SPC results in 2017 comparable to national results at Yr 11 & 12, but slightly down on Decile 8-10 schools. At Yr 13 SPC results are lower than national & Decile 8-10 data - note this is not the case if we look at roll based data. See Table 4 belowSPC UE results are significantly better than the national average and the D8-10 schools. For the first time in many years NCEA "pass rates" nationally down on the previous year. The SPC Yr 11 data is weaker than would normally be expected - due to a very large cohort of about 200, which had a "big tail", including Yr 11 international students we do not usually have.

Commentary on Endorsement dataSPC Excellence endorsements remain below the national average and substantially below the Decile 8-10 data. The Yr 13 endorsements at SPC particularly disappointing.SPC Merit endorsements comparable to the national averages. Yr 12 Excellences for SPC encouraging & well up on 2016. This is the most important endorsement as it generates significant univerity scholarship payments.Yr 11 Excellence & Merit endorsements for SPC are down on 2016, reflecting the weaker cohort at Yr 11 last year.Remember when comparing with Decile 8 -10 schools, that these include girls school, the Decile 8-10 Boys' schools data would be more favourable.

Commentary on Overall Results - Roll BasedThis data is very similar at Years 11 & 12 to the participation data in Table 1 - the main difference is for Year 13 and UE.Note that the SPC data is now significantly better than the national data & for both Level 3 and UE.Nationally many Year 13 students are not participating in these qualifications - hence their roll based percentages drop sharply.

Commentary on Ethnic DataSPC Maori data better than 2016 across all levels compared to 2016SPC Maori data for levels 1 & 2 excellent compared to national data, with UE also higher than national average. But the SPC Level 3 is a little weakerSPC Maori data compares well with Decile 8-10 schools, but lower at Year 13.SPC Pasifika data a little weaker compared to 2016SPC Pasifika data a little weaker compared to 2016 comparable to the national data, slightly higher for UE.SPC Pasifika data slightly lower than Decile 8-10 schoolsNote percentages for this data can be mis-leading as the number of students is small.

Overall commentsResults are marginally down on last year, however apart from Level 1 pass rates were alat or near the College targets of 90/90/80/70.Data clearly shows a need for the College to focus on lifting the percentage of Excellence and Merit Endorsements.Level 3 and UE results, especially for our Pasifika students, while rising in recent years, still need to improve further.

Staff report for BoT meeting – 21 February 2018

• The start of the year has been extremely frantic. We started the year with 2 Teacher Only days, and during this time we covered 3 topics as part of our Professional Development. These were – Classroom Management, Culturally appropriate Pedagogy, and Google Screencastify. While they were all good sessions, we lost out on planning time and didn’t have time to unpack the PD we were given. As a result, the majority of us are nowhere near as prepared as we would like to be at the moment.

• The change to the 1hour periods will take a bit of time to get used to, especially in relation to the late lunch, but so far it’s going pretty well. We’ll also have to make sure assembly finishes on time on Wednesday.

• A smooth start to the year for the new Year 9 boys, with plenty of useful information about the boys having been collated and distributed by Lucy MacLeod.

• The relocation of the Library to W015 has been relatively smooth sailing in terms of the use of it, with textbooks still being available. With Years 9 to 12 all having Chromebooks, the demand for computers in the ‘library’ isn’t so great.

• Some staff are doing some outstanding work to provide PD for the rest of the staff on Wednesday mornings.

• Several staff went away with some of our student leaders on various camps in the holidays such as MYL, and their time and commitment is really appreciated.

• Maurice Atkinson and Fr Matt Crawford had a very rewarding trip to Ranong with a small group of seniors in the first 2 weeks of this year (see attached letter).

Student Rep Report Friday 16 February Events that have been:

● Old Boys’ Cup was a success for the school with us retaining the Cup for another year but it was close. The participation in the stands was of some concern to me with the majority of the school sitting on phones instead of supporting. Behaviour was fine with no issues.

● The trip to Ranong that took place in the holidays and first week of school was a great success. Mr Atkinson was pretty stoked with how it turned out and the boys all really benefited from it.

● Academic mass was good and the Prefects theme for the year was announced which is “Works over Words”, the Head Prefects announced this and did a great job explaining it. Some of the boys were a bit upset with not receiving badges and so on but they received them on Ash Wednesday. The Poly boys wore lava lavas and they looked very good.

● There has been some comments made on the new leadership system and how it was put into place.

● The Athletics days were great with Watters House winning overall. The ‘give it a go’ day was rained out but was still positive and enjoyable. The Interhouse day went without any hiccups.

● I missed the Year 9 and Year 13 only day on Tuesday 30 January but hear that it went well with the Year 9’s playing games with the Year 13’s and doing things such as learning the Haka.

● School has now started to settle down and regular classes are happening. ● There was a serious fight on the turf earlier this week which the school dealt with.

Upcoming events

❖ McEvedy Shield is on Tuesday 6 March. The slogan this year is “Make at Pats great again.”

❖ Futsal nationals are upcoming. ❖ Maadi Cup is happening in late March.
