Grade 8 4 2 No students in lottery or wait list Total: 237 274 288 Enrichment Funds: I will be writing a summary of the ways that Enrichment Funds have helped us in providing assemblies, field trips, activities, transportation, and supplies throughout the year in the newsletter that goes out at the end of April. The list so far includes: No Bully assembly, Aurora Village field trip, OMSI field trip, Zoo field trip, Skippy Jones play at Oregon Children's Theatre, Christmas Program supplies, Biz Town program, Rice Museum field trip, Outdoor School, School planners, Day of the Dead parties, PE cart and supplies and Field Day materials. In April and May, we look forward to a field trips to the Portland Timbers U-‐23s Health & Fitness School Days, the Oregon History Museum, Finance Town, Portland Spirit educational river tour, Middle School trip to Conestoga Rec Center, and a Brick4Kidz first grade “in class field trip” in which students learn more about laws of motion with Lego Bricks. BSD Annual Site Visit: We expect our annual site visit and classroom observations to happen the last week of April. Jon Bridges will be setting that up for us. Information gathered during these observations is part of our annual review and is incorporated in Jon’s overall report – which is given to the BSD in September. Teacher Recruitment: This year, we combined our scheduled interviews with an advertised Recruitment Fair. We interviewed several candidates and felt that four of them would be a great fit to our needs. We used an electronic
reference check for our strongest candidates, followed up by a phone reference check. Letters of intent were sent out on April 10th. Candidates have one week to accept this letter of intent and until the end of April to provide TSPC with all of the required paperwork. Contracts are not offered until the candidate successfully completes paperwork to TSPC and awarded an Oregon license. Candidates are given an information sheet on “Steps to Getting an Oregon Teaching License” to guide them along the way. In addition to the interviews, Ana Gonzalez and I visited Universidad Del Turabo and presented the Dean of the School of Education with a gift bag filled with items from Oregon. We stopped by to visit the contact at the placement office, but she was not in that day. We sent her a gift bag and a note when we returned. I suggest that we continue to nurture this relationship as this university. Spanish Assessment – grades 3-‐4-‐5: To support and encourage biliteracy development among English Learners and native English speakers, the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) recently entered into a contract with Riverside Publishing to offer their Spanish assessment, Logramos (Third Edition), to students in grades 3-‐5 in Oregon schools. The testing window for Logramos, which is a paper-‐and-‐pencil based test, is scheduled for May 4-‐15, 2015. ODE selected Logramos to help elementary schools that offer Spanish instruction (especially schools with dual language programs) to monitor their students’ Spanish development and to evaluate and improve their Spanish instruction. ODE is requiring students who are registered for Logramos to take the Reading and Vocabulary subtests. Arco Iris applied to participate with ODE right after Jon Bridges let us know that this opportunity was available. ODE opened it up to all schools and stated that participation would be on “First Come, First Served Basis” so we responded immediately. Our test coordinator is working directly with BSD’s test coordinator to make sure that our participating teachers participate in the web-‐based training on test administration and protocols as well as test data management and reporting According to the Logramos website, the Reading subtest is a two part test, with 30 minutes expected for students to complete each part (so approximately 1 hour total for the Reading subtest.) The estimated time for the Vocabulary subtest is 15 minutes. Classroom teachers will administer Logramos in separate blocks of time. For example, a single sitting for the Vocabulary subtest and potentially two sittings for Reading (one sitting for each part), if needed. The test will not be returned to ODE for scoring. The district will ship the answer folders directly to Riverside. Districts will ship these to Riverside by May 29. Logramos is a Spanish achievement test that has newest national comparisons in a Spanish achievement assessment. More information on Logramos can be found at the following site: http://www.riversidepublishing.com/products/logramos-‐3/ This is in addition to our regularly scheduling testing in Spanish: SOPA and IDELs.

Arco Iris Spanish Immersion Charter School, along with the Beaverton School District, recognizes the diversity and worth of all individuals and groups. It is the policy of Arco Iris that there will be no discrimination or harassment of individuals or groups based on race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, national origin, marital status, age, veterans' status, genetic information or disability in any educational programs, activities, or employment.
The principal search working group included 2 Arco Iris school board members, 2 Arco Iris parents, 3 current staff members and 1 board member emeritus. We reviewed candidate applications and conducted interviews as an entire group. Interviews were conducted using the same set of pre-‐determined questions, established by the work group, for each candidate. After careful consideration of each of the applicants, the principal search working group unanimously recommended a candidate to meet with two additional board members and the two board members overseeing the search process for a second interview. The group now unanimously recommends to the full school board that an offer for the principal position be extended to Candidate A. Please read a summary of the candidate’s qualifications. Candidate A has extensive experience teaching in her own classroom at multiple grade levels, in both lower primary and upper primary grades. The candidate has demonstrated the ability to support individual teacher growth in and out of the classroom. Candidate A also has experience with curriculum development and facilitating programs for teachers at the school level (PBIS, acting administrator, staff meetings) and at the district level (teacher professional development in Common Core Staff Development, SIOP, ESL, Reading, Writing, Math). Candidate A has organized Parent Nights and Family Nights for the school community. The candidate speaks Spanish and spoke to her multi-‐cultural professional experiences during the interview, and demonstrated knowledge of best practices in second language acquisition. The group feels that Candidate A understands the different layers of communication involved with the different stakeholders of a school such as ours. Candidate A is currently completing her administrator licensure. The references for Candidate A include the following comments: “outstanding ’hands-‐on‘ teaching style… strong leadership skills… use of data for decision-‐making… high expectations for all students… connects well with parents… demonstrates strong cultural competency as a teacher, an advocate and a teacher leader. “
