hit for six: some sports clubs face steep rise in hire feesBRIMBANK

Community sports clubs could be slugged thousands of dollars extra in annual venue-hire fees under a dra Brimbank council policy.

Clubs now pay a at $160 annual fee to lease Brimbank’s 46 sports pavilions, 94 playing elds and 40 courts.

But an updated lease agreement policy, released last ursday, could lead to fees skyrocketing for some clubs.

Council community well-being director

Neil Whiteside said the new guidelines would bring fees into line with industry standards and help pay for the maintenance of sports facilities, which costs the council up to $2 million a year.

Mr Whiteside said local sports clubs had up to now had it easy and said a new “shared approach” between the council and clubs was required. “Costs have been set at a very low mark,” he said. “Council spends millions of dollars on maintenance [on these facilities].”

e biggest proposed hike is for the exclusive annual lease of the Churchill

Reserve social rooms in St Albans at $5059 a year.

Clubs could also face a $2000 annual fee to hire some shared pavilions and a $1000 fee for some shared sporting grounds.

But the council will o er combined discounts of up to 80 per

cent in some cases, including for new clubs. An eight-week consultation period about the changes ends on May 21 .

Sunshine Baseball Club president Glenn Letts said he feared the increases could greatly a ect programs.

e club could face an annual fee of $1500 to hire two grounds, while a pavilion could cost $3698 to exclusively lease per year.

‘‘It’s hard enough [running a club],’’ Mr Letts said.

‘‘Kids won’t play [if fees go up].’’ e council will hold two information

sessions at the Visy Cares Hub in Sunshine on April 10 and 14 from 6.30pm. \

SUNSHINE

Sunshine’s $52 million community and civic centre will save Brimbank council millions of dollars in the long run, according to chairman John Watson.

Unveiling designs last ursday, Mr Watson said he was con dent the council would save money by moving all of its sta to the Hampshire Road site.

He said the seven-storey centre, expected to open in June 2016, would be “one of the most outstanding buildings in Melbourne’s west”.

Mr Watson said having sta driving between the present Sunshine and Keilor o ces created signi cant occupational health and safety issues. “Council is incredibly fragmented right now, which creates ine ciencies and costs in downtime,’’ he said.

Mr Watson said he could understand community concerns about the council shelling out tens of millions of dollars on a building. “ e question is, however, can we a ord not to do it?”

e new centre will also raise revenue by housing tenants on oors two through six, although the council has indicated a

preference for community-oriented services like Victoria University or health agencies.

Mr Watson said the council would look to sell the council building in Sunshine in an agreement with VicTrack, which owns half of the land. “We’re talking to VicTrack and it’s better to sell the land as one package rather than bits and pieces.”

ARTIST’S IMPRESSION

He said he was con dent the council’s Keilor building would remain in the hands of the community.

“We’re not planning to sell,” he said. “ e community has made it clear they want a community hub in Keilor.”

Construction on the new Sunshine centre is expected to begin mid-September . \ BC

jail facilities ‘inadequate’Plans for a 75-bed mental health unit for prisoners at a new men’s jail being built in Ravenhall are “woefully inadequate”, according to the Victorian Institute of Forensic Mental Health (Forensicare ). A Victorian Ombudsman’s report has recommended a specialist unit for prisoners with intellectual disabilities. With the report nding the rate of mental health disorders among Victorian prisoners is three to ve times greater than in the community, Forensicare chief executive Tom Dalton said the Ravenhall unit would buckle. “In the absence of some signi cant shift in public policy in relation to the imprisonment of offenders, the apprehension of parolees and the denial of parole to an increasing number of prisoners, by the time Ravenhall opens that number of mental health beds … will be woefully inadequate.” \

BRIEFScommuters urged to take bus to stationTRANSPORT

Cheaper train fares would ease tra c congestion if commuters did the right thing and stopped driving their cars to train stations, according to a Brimbank public transport advocate.

From January 1 next year, Sunbury line train commuters will be able to buy zone 1 tickets.

Premier Denis Napthine said this would save them about $5 a day or $1200 a year.

Delahey Action Group secretary David Anderson welcomed the changes but said commuters should consider catching a bus to their local railway station.

“ ere has to be an end to driving a car to a station and parking it there all day when there’s a bus to take them to and from a station,’’ Mr Anderson said. “It’s an opportunity to reduce pollution and clogged roads.”

e Public Transport Users Association’s Tony Morton said poor service for Deer Park and Ardeer commuters on the Ballarat line was a greater deterrent to using public transport than the cost of fares. “We believe people in Deer Park and Caroline Springs

would be much better o having the line duplicated and the frequency increased to match other Melbourne suburban trains, compared to having the current two-hour non-service with a discounted fare,’’ he said.Mr Morton said upgrades for feeder bus

tip plan is on the noseDEER PARK

Controversial plans for the extension of a north-west land ll site should be halted until “signi cant” odour issues are addressed, according to Brimbank council.

Formally objecting to Boral’s plans to expand its Ravenhall facility – which is in Melton City – Brimbank chairman John Watson said any increases should be made in strict, incremental stages.

“It’s too much too soon,’’ he said. ‘‘Clearly there are problems with it. Our residents are taking the brunt of the odour issues.”

Brimbank has no jurisdiction in the matter, which could go before Melton council by June.

Boral’s application seeks to extend its operations by 179 million cubic metres. If approved, it would create one of the biggest garbage dumps in Australia.

Brimbank administrator John Tanner said the site was important but “must be managed properly”. Two petitions objecting to Boral’s plans have attracted about 6000 signatures. Kororoit MP Marlene Kairouz said about 4000 signatures had been collected for a petition to be tabled in State Parliament.

“Melton City Council has also received approximately 2000 objections, which they believe is the most received on an application,” she said. About 500 people angry at Boral’s plans attended a community meeting in Caroline Springs on February 26.

A Brimbank council report said the council had received more than 30 complaints from residents.

“Residents have indicated the odour from the land ll is signi cant and are personally recording the date and times of odour occurrences,” the report said.

e council called for a bu er zone of 1500 metres within the

perimeter of the proposed land ll site from existing and future buildings . A

500-metre bu er is currently proposed. A spokesman for community group Stop

e Tip said Brimbank council’s objection set an important precedent for Melton .

“Brimbank council chose to side with the community,” the spokesman said. “Melton council should also stand up for residents and reject the Boral tip expansion application.” Stop e Tip will hold a rally at Melton Civic Centre at 6pm today. \

tailgaters targeted in police crackdownROADS

Police are cracking down on drivers travelling too close to cars in front of them on Melton City’s busiest roads.

Senior Constable Allan Edwards said police would target tailgaters on the Western Freeway and Melton Highway.

“ e most common collision reported to police is a rear-end collision, which is almost always the result of the o ending vehicle travelling too close to the vehicle in front,’’ he said.

“At 100 km/h, a vehicle travels almost 28 metres in one second and at 110 km/h it’s 30.5 metres in a second.

‘‘Most drivers will take a minimum of one second to react to brake lights coming on in front of them, and if they are closer than these distances a collision will most likely occur.’’

Senior Constable Edwards said drivers should stay at least two seconds behind the vehicle in front of them, at any speed.

Motorists caught tailgating will be ned $217 and lose one demerit point.

He said police were also targeting speeding motorists and those driving in the right lane when not overtaking.

Senior Constable Edwards said there would be more police on north-west roads over the next few months.

“TAC funding will provide for an extra 16 shi s to be

worked by Melton highway patrol from April 4 to May 25, with an

emphasis on drink-driving o ences,’’ he said.

“Apart from conducting random breath testing , members involved in the operation will be conducting random patrols around all licensed premises within the police service area and testing drivers leaving licensed premises.” \

‘no’ to school landPLANNING

Brimbank council has passed up the opportunity to buy ve former school sites from the state government.

e Education Department invited the council to buy the surplus sites before they were listed for sale.

ey include Keilor Park Primary School, which closed in 2008; Calder Rise and Deer Park primary school, which closed in 2009; Kealba Secondary School, which closed in 2010; and land for a proposed school that was never built in McCubbin Drive , Sydenham North.

A report to the council administrators last week found none of the sites was required for future open space or as a location for future community facilities, because of their proximity to existing open spaces.

e report said the sites were too far from transport, shops and other community facilities.

An Education Department report said it had a strategy to sell government land to encourage sensible redevelopment and new housing and employment opportunities. Brimbank open-space campaigner John

Hedditch said the sale of the school sites would reduce long-term access to public open space.

e council has also con rmed it will not spend any more money on land at the former Sunvale Primary School site.

“It would have to be so cheap [to buy the rest of the land] a cheque wasn’t written,” chairman John Watson said.

As reported by the Weekly, the council bought a 1.1-hectare section for

$3 million last month. e Save Sunvale group claims

the council declined an option to purchase the entire site, despite being o ered a discounted price.

“ e state government o er was for the whole site at public-use

zone discounts but it had a repayment period of two years, which council couldn’t a ord, so it rejected the residential portion,” Mr Hedditch said.

But council director of city development Stuart Menzies said there was no option to buy the entire site.

e residential zoned section is now up for sale.

Planning Minister Matthew Guy said a decision would be made soon. \

world gains from marilyn’s ‘escape’

Professor Marilyn Anderson is glad she was born without the Y chromosome .

Born in Sunshine, raised in Deer Park and educated in St Albans, the Keilor resident and La Trobe University academic says her gender ensured she wasn’t destined for the local chemical factory. “Most of the people who lived in Deer Park worked for ICI, and their children expected to nd employment there when they nished school,” Professor Anderson said.

‘‘I didn’t know any women who stayed in the workforce a er they were married, so I had a freedom to study whatever I liked during my education at primary and secondary school as I wasn’t expected to have a career.”

Nearly 50 years a er becoming the rst in her family to study at university, Professor Anderson was among 20 women added to the Victorian Honour Roll of Women in March.

new, higher honour for pitbull resisterBURNSIDE

A Burnside man will receive an Australian bravery award a er stepping in to stop a dog that attacked a woman and her grandson.

Last week, Governor-General Quentin Bryce said that Damian Hall , who received a Victorian bravery award in 2012, would receive a national honour for his sel ess actions.

“It is hard to put into words ,” Mr Hall (pictured) said of the news. “I received a letter before Christmas and I was a bit shocked and overwhelmed. It brings back a lot of memories.”

Mr Hall was driving on Westwood Drive in Burnside on November 17, 2011 when he saw a woman ghting o a pitbull terrier that was attacking a baby inside a pram.

He rushed to help the pair and struck the dog several times before it began to attack him. A passerby pulled up in a ute to help. e woman and child were able to climb inside the vehicle, while Mr Hall jumped onto the tray of the ute to get out of harm’s way.

He then stopped the dog from attacking a neighbour who had come outside to assist.

“When it rst happened, people were asking, ‘what were you thinking?’” Mr Hall said. “I wasn’t thinking, you just get it done.’’

Mr Hall said he didn’t know the victim and her family before the incident, but that had changed. “I know her family well; the young boy is the same age as my son.”

e grandmother was also honoured with a commendation for her role in stopping the attack . \

CHARGES OVER BABY’S DEATHAn 18-year-old woman has been charged over the death of a newborn baby found hidden in bushes in St Albans. The baby was found wrapped in a blanket under a tree last month. Police questioned an 18-year-old about the baby but never con rmed if she was related to the child. The woman, from Deer Park, has been charged with child homicide, a police spokeswoman said. She was expected to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday. \

train fight witnesses soughtPolice are urging witnesses to come forward after a punch-up between two men caused major delays on the Sunbury train line . The ght occurred on a train as it pulled into Ginifer station about 2.10pm on March 24. Despite the brawl being captured on video and uploaded to social media, no one who witnessed the incident wanted to talk to police. Police also spoke to the men involved in the altercation, but they did not provide statements. Footage posted on Facebook shows two men near the train doors exchanging abuse before one of the men, dressed in a blue T-shirt, throws the rst punch. The ght caused a 30-minute delay on the Sunbury line while the driver waited for police to arrive. A Metro spokeswoman said a

window in the train was broken. Information to Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 \

APRIL 1, 2014 \ BRIMBANK & NORTH WEST WEEKLY 11

The slim blonde is delivering a piece to camera when from behind her lurches a snarling clutch of lost souls, blood streaming down their faces, arms outstretched.

You won’t nd it on Vanessa O’Hanlon’s o cial bio, but this is her secret zombie ick.

Blink and you will miss her appearance in Dead Country – a movie far more horrible than horrifying which sank pretty much without trace upon release in 2008.

Confronted with evidence from her undead past, the national weather presenter for ABC News Breakfast is remarkably gracious.

“I don’t think I ever even saw it,” she laughs. “It’s just a tiny reporter part that someone asked me to do and I agreed to before I realised there would be zombies surrounding me.”

While it’s highly unlikely that she’ll ever so easily fall into their clutches again, the zombie encounter underscores O’Hanlon’s willingness to step out of her comfort zone.

Whether it’s climbing Mt Kilimanjaro, trekking the Kokoda Track, encountering gorillas in Uganda, travelling solo to Sarajevo, at the gym, or the hands-on renovation of a four-bedroom home in North Melbourne, O’Hanlon likes to push herself.

She describes her steady ascent from Melton schoolgirl community radio volunteer to one of the national broadcaster’s more popular faces as one of “sheer determination”.

is, a er all, is a woman who for years spent much of her working day as a tra c reporter doing live crosses from a helicopter, feeling ever-so-slightly nauseated.

“I don’t know if you have ever looked down in a chopper, but I used to get a little bit sick,” O’Hanlon admits now.

For seven years, on and o , she reported on and lmed real-time road conditions, tra c congestion and accidents for all major radio and television stations including regular spots on Sunrise and the Channel 10 news. During that time she also worked as a host of Melbourne A er Dark on Mix 101.1 and

managed to complete a bachelor of arts majoring in psychology and public relations.

e legacy of that period is an excellent aerial understanding of Melbourne and the remarkable ability to hear herself think with a dozen people talking in her ear and chopper blades whirring overhead.

“In the air, I’m like a Melway, but if I’m in a car I’m geographically challenged. I have to look for landmarks,” she con des.

It was no surprise to colleagues when the composed girl in the chopper was head-hunted by the ABC.

For more than ve years now she has been getting up at 3.45am to join Virginia Trioli, Michael Rowland (who succeeded original co-host Barry Cassidy in 2010) and sports presenter Paul Kennedy at the ABC’s Southbank Centre, and the program’s ratings are building nicely.

“Your body clock gets used to it, though it can be hard on a Monday morning because you change your routine on the weekend,” O’Hanlon says.

Her knowledge of her subject is exhaustive.“When the ABC rst put the concept to me I went

out and learned every single thing I could about the weather. I spent a lot of time looking at synoptic charts.

“I prep everything myself, I research myself, I write, I o en don’t read the autocue because the information is already in my head and I read o the maps as well. When people talk about that old-school weather girl stereotype, it’s disheartening.”

No climate change sceptic, she also nds it “disappointing” that people like Prime Minister Tony Abbott – who as opposition leader dismissed climate change as absolute crap – make comments that are “so blatant”.

“Everybody is going to live on the edge of having an opinion, but I also think you should take the available information and at least examine it. Just in the time I have been doing the weather, I’ve noticed how extreme things have become.”

Seeing weather patterns develop genuinely interests her, and O’Hanlon points to a low in the Coral Sea that she seems to have been talking about for weeks.

“It can be a long time from the time we get the information to the time it actually happens and we can get ahead of ourselves out of excitement, but if that goes in as a cyclone into inland areas, it could be good news for farmers. Sometimes people do seem to think you can make it happen. ey want you to say it will rain and then they blame you when it oods.

“Most of it’s in jest, but it is funny.“Make it rain: sure, I can do that!“ en you get the people who want to make sure it won’t,

and contact you on social media six months out and say, can you tell me what it is going to be like on such and such a

weekend because I’m getting married.”It’s not just her weather forecasting that provokes

interest.“I will meet people sometimes who say they just

tune in to see what I am wearing. Everybody has to say whether they like the cut, the colour.”

But as the eldest of ve children, O’Hanlon is accustomed to robust opinions.

Among the rst students to graduate from the newly built Kurunjang Secondary College in the then semi-rural satellite town of Melton, she recalls it as a very di erent place from the sprawling outer suburb it is today. It was here working in a local record shop and the community radio station upstairs that led her to enrol in the Swinburne radio course and her rst commercial presenting gig on Sun FM in Alice Springs.

“I always thought I would work more in music. It’s weird nding yourself in a news environment when it all started as a music-driven thing.”

O’Hanlon’s personal fave is still Bon Jovi – perhaps not suited to all tastes – but her weather?

at’s music to the ears. \[email protected]

There are many things I love about being a Councillor, in particular, the opportunities I have to celebrate the great things about living, working and playing in the City of Melton. I had one such opportunity on 22 March, when I attended Council’s Harmony Day celebration in Caroline Springs.

It was wonderful to see so many families and neighbours get together to embrace cultural diversity and acknowledge the

contributions our multicultural residents make to our community. You may not realise it, but the City of Melton is made up of people from over 100 nations, and collectively we speak around 70 different languages. So it’s important that Council supports and promotes cultural harmony through events like Harmony Day, and fosters an appreciation of cultural diversity.

There are many other opportunities to get together with fellow residents within our community. On 25 April, I will be joining Councillors and residents to celebrate ANZAC Australian calendar. The ANZAC Day Dawn Service in Caroline Springs is an opportunity to honour our service men and women and so that we can live in peace and harmony. I encourage all residents to attend our Dawn Service and pay your respects.

Councillors have been busily preparing the 2014/2015 Draft Council Budget. Any Watts Ward residents with suggestions for the Draft Budget can either call or email me to ensure they have their say on how Council allocates

Melton City Council is gearing up for Heritage Week celebrations, which will be taking place later this month.

The City of Melton has a wonderfully diverse history and Heritage Week is a great opportunity to experience and celebrate our past. Event highlights include a Famous Faces of Melton exhibition, the City of Melton

Heritage Award presentation evening, and a heritage day at Eynesbury. I encourage anyone with an interest in our City’s past to take part in one of the many activities on offer. You can pick up a copy of the Heritage Week program from the Civic Centres, Libraries or the Visitor Information Centre.

Also taking place this month is the Social Housing and Support Expo. The Expo will be held at the Melton Community Hall on Monday 14 April 2014 from 12pm till 2.30pm. If you would like some guidance and support in relation to social housing you are invited to attend the event to learn more about the options that may be available to you in the City of Melton. The expo is a great opportunity to listen to, and talk with, local service providers that support people in maintaining and improving better housing outcomes.

Finally, the school holidays are just around the corner and as always Council has lots of events and activities on offer to keep youngsters entertained, including activities at the libraries, get activated events and the teenage holiday program. For more information visit melton.vic.gov.au

This renovated house is a class act. Modernised and sophisticated, it’s a charming prospect for buyers starting out or couples wanting to downsize

and be close to the suburb’s hustle and bustle. An entrance with frosted door, recessed

ceiling and earthy-toned floor tiles links to a terrific open-plan lounge-dining area characterised by sleek, square-set ceilings with built-in speakers, and a split-system.

The glossy kitchen has expansive stone benchtops, ample D-pull drawers and cabinets, a double sink, Euro stainless-steel oven cooktop with four gas burners, underbench oven and a pantry.

There are up to three bedrooms; two spacious rooms have built-in wardrobes and share a sumptuous bathroom with floor-to-ceiling wall tiles, detachable shower head and a stone-topped basin. One smaller bedroom at the back has wardrobes and can

be used as a guest bedroom or study. It’s also close to a light-filled laundry which doubles as a powder room.

“Low-maintenance” is yours. A small patio, which can be glimpsed from the kitchen’s large window, provides an ideal area for outdoor dining, while the fully concreted side-access driveway provides plenty of secure off-street parking and additional room for entertaining in an open north-faced setting made private by high Colourbond fencing. And the buyer

will have the benefit of ducted heating, re-stumping, re-wiring and re-roofing. The house is a stone’s throw from Bell Street shops and a two-minute stroll to Glengala Road shops, Sunshine Heights kindergarten and primary school, St Paul’s Primary School, Marian College and Sunshine Secondary College’s west campus. It’s also within striking range of the Western Ring Road and a quick commute into the city. \

Create something special with this well-presented Sunshine North residence.

On a 632-square-metre block that could be used for a

multi-unit site or redevelopment, subject to council approval, the weatherboard dwelling retains Art Deco ceiling panels and picture rails among its period features.

Ripe for rejuvenation, it has three bedrooms (two with built-in wardrobes); tiled bathroom with shower, bath and vanity; rear laundry with toilet; an eat-in kitchen with upgraded upright oven; and lounge room with older-style air-conditioner and a gas heater in the tapestry-brick fireplace.

There’s also a steel single garage at the end of a long side drive and a full-width covered area at the rear.

The property is close to schools (St Bernadette’s Primary, Sunshine North Primary), Dempster Park, railway station and Western Ring Road access. \

INVESTORS \ smarties look beyond the gold standard of location, writes angela allan

many keys to the pefect purchase

There’s a saying that “location is everything”, but is that the main thing investors look for when buying a property? There are actually several factors investors look at before placing a bid for a property.

The investor will be considering buyers and what they need, so if it’s a residential property in a suburban area tailored to families, nearby services – including schools, transport and parks – are a plus. The investor will also consider whether the property is for holiday-makers or will become a family’s everyday home in determining which local features will be most desirable. And investors usually choose properties within an 11-kilometre radius of a capital city’s CBD, as these are considered the most sought-after.

High-growth corridors close to key employment and transport zones are also popular with investors as the residence won’t stay vacant; rather, it will generate rent straight away.

Using this information, an investor has to consider which properties in which suburbs will give them the most revenue now and in the future. Real estate is also subject to trends, and the market determines what investors will or won’t purchase – the rate of vacancy in a particular suburb can signify things have gone awry.

The size of the land block, character and number of bedrooms and bathrooms also come into play. Other factors investors consider are crime rate and neighbourhood safety, local schools and their reputation, access to jobs and the unemployment rate, and building permits and future development either by government or council.

Make no mistake: investors want to make money and turn a profit. Investors not only have to put money upfront, including

stamp duty (which can be up to 6 per cent) and any legal or conveyancing fees, but look towards property improvements they may need to pay for, and whether these are worth the cost spent on the improvements. The resale value of the home

– which is determined by the value of money, the market conditions and any additions or improvements planned – are all factors that will go in to determining the resale value of the property and will affect the investor’s bottom line. \

Draft Sports Facility Hire, Licences and Leases Agreement PolicyHave your sayBrimbank City Council is seeking community feedback on an updated draft Sports Facility Hire, Licences and Leases Agreement Policy that will ensure fair and equitable access and use of community sporting facilities and reserves in the City, and would benefi t the entire community signifi cantly. The current Policy has been reviewed and updated to provide Council with a structured platform to enter into new formal agreements with all sports clubs for the future.Under the proposed policy, the new agreements will signifi cantly benefi t the Brimbank community and clubs as they will focus on clubs actively engaging with the entire Brimbank community to provide participation opportunities in addition to covering the operational requirements of clubs and Council.High level consultation with sports clubs has taken place over a number of years at Club Development Network meetings regarding the need for an updated policy relating to lease and licence agreements and associated user fees and charges.Council will consult further over April and May 2014 with sports clubs on the Policy and associated Guidelines. As part of the consultations, Council will also consult with state sporting associations through the agreement development process to ensure that the agreements off ered by Council are understood by the state sporting bodies. The updated policy is expected to benefi t the Brimbank community by:• ensuring optimal use of sporting facilities to meet community needs.• facilitating a shared approach (between club and Council) to the costs

of managing and maintaining sporting facilities through fair and reasonable charges for use.

• encouraging clubs to actively engage with the entire Brimbank community by providing participation opportunities. Under the new policy this community development work would qualify clubs to pay subsidised Council fees that recognise this contribution.

38 BRIMBANK & NORTH WEST WEEKLY \ APRIL 1, 2014

season starts with a bangWRFL

Opening night at Kings Park Reserve has evolved into the showpiece event on the Western Region Football League’s regular season calendar.

St Albans has driven the concept for the past three years with rst-class facilities, bustling crowds and an electric atmosphere.

And with Deer Park the visiting club last year, the concept was given an added boost.

e Lions will be rst-night visitors again this Friday, and will bring an exhilarating mix of local rivalry, a reigning premiers tag and must-see former AFL stars.

eir recruiting spree during the summer, including the arrivals of Brent Guerra, Ryan Hargrave and Bret ornton, has created a love-’em-or-hate-’em impulse, a talking point that should drive the biggest crowd in Saints’ opening-night history.

Saints coach Marcus Barclay is excited at the prospect of facing the Lions at full strength, knowing it will attract more fans to the game, present the ultimate challenge for his players and allow them to experience an atmosphere that can’t be replicated in a run-of-the-mill Saturday a ernoon game.

“ e Friday night game is a real positive for us,” Barclay told the Weekly.

“It’s been a while since the club has played in a grand nal or won a premiership, I think it was 2001, so at the stage we’re at, this is as close as it gets to a big nals game.

“ e fact that it is Deer Park .with all the talk about them, we think it’s going to be a pretty big night.”

e Saints broke through for a nals appearance last season with a squad that had good quality veterans and up-and-coming youngsters but few in the middle years.

“We had real experienced players, 26 and above, and good kids, 18, 19 and 20, but a gap we needed to bridge,” Barclay said.

e Saints went some way to lling the void by recruiting bigger-bodied footballers to help the younger players in the physical battles.

e Stephens brothers - Sam and James - will help in this department. ey’re well known across the west as premiership players at Albion and can play a number of roles.

“ ey both have a really good work ethic,” Barclay said.

Gordon Hillsdon, a virtually unknown half forward/onballer from EDFL second-tier side Glenroy, may be in the round one starting line-up a er an outstanding preseason.

Chris Ra opoulos, recruited from Keilor, is another with a hard edge, while former VFL player Dion Lawson adds class to the mid eld.

“It’s not a big number of recruits, but they’re all big-bodied, really strong players who have a presence on the eld,” Barclay said.

“We think that’s what sort of cost us in the elimination nal against Altona, the young guys weren’t [physically] ready.”

colosimo is knights’ shining armour NPL soccer

When Melbourne Knights penalty specialist Jacob Colosimo generously handed hat-trick teammate Rodrigo Covarrubias a spot kick in the season opener - which Covarrubias promptly missed - he was given a rm rebuke by the coaching sta .

So when the Knights were awarded a second penalty in as many National Premier League games in the 2-0 win against Pascoe Vale at Hosken Reserve on Friday night, Colosimo issued a rm ‘get out of my way’ to the other 10 players.

With the score at 0-0 and the o -colour Knights in a spot of bother for the rst time this season, Colosimo stepped up and hit the back of the net.

He added a second in open play to ensure his club dodged a bullet and picked up three hard-earned points on a testing road trip.

Knights captain Ben Surey admitted the game was far from cut and dried before Colosimo’s brace. “You just have to scrap it out sometimes,” he told the Weekly.

e Knights have barely put a foot wrong in this young season. ey hit all their preseason marks and clinched wins in the opening rounds of the NPL and the Dockerty Cup.

ere was cause for concern this time when coach Andrew Marth greeted his players in the rooms at the half-time break.

“We were a little bit fortunate to go into the break 0-0,” Surey said. “We were letting them play a little bit more than we usually want and we were giving it away quite cheaply.

“We couldn’t get into any rhythm in the rst half, but they also made it hard, pressured right up and forced us into playing long balls rather than passing to feet.”

It was as if a weight was taken o the shoulders of the Knights players when James McGarry was brought down in the box by Vales goalkeeper Stefaan Sardelic and Colosimo scored from the spot.

e Knights began to nd their groove and create opportunities and it nally told when Daniel Visevic placed a well-weighted ball behind the defence for Colosimo to score the game-clinching goal.

While it was not pretty and it took a resolute performances from goalkeeper Christopher May and centre half Antun Kovacic to complete the task, the Knights can

Westgate dropped its home opener 4-0 in ugly fashion against Fawkner Blues in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1 at Ardeer Reserve on Friday night.

e game was as good as over at half time with the Gate staring a three-goal de cit in the face.

e Gate will go back to the drawing board in preparation for Saturday’s big derby, away to Cairnlea at Cairnlea Park.

Cairnlea got its rst points of the season in a 2-2 rollercoaster with Sunbury United at Langama Park.

Keilor Park sunk 2-0 to title contenders Moreland City at Keilor Park Recreation Reserve.

In state league 2, Westvale and Heidelberg Stars could not be separated, drawing 2-2 at McKechnie Reserve.

North Sunshine Eagles lost 2-1 to a second half goal against Moreland United at Moomba Park Reserve.

Western Eagles fought back a er trailing by two goals but still went down 3-2 to Geelong Rangers in a state league 3 goalfest at Myers Reserve.

But there was joy for Spring Hills in state league 5, beating Melbourne 2-1 with goals by Tom Markovski and Julian Grech at Springside Recreational Reserve.

In NPL1, Sunshine George Cross made it two wins from two starts with a 1-0 victory against Avondale Heights at Chaplin Reserve.

be content with three valuable points that will be hard to come by for visiting teams to Hosken Reserve this season.

With six points from six, the Knights will go into the clash with Werribee City at Knights Stadium on Sunday as hot favourites.

But Surey warned there would be no easy games in the newly formed NPL.

“You’ve got to make sure you prepare properly because if you go in with the wrong attitude, you’ll get punished,” he said.

lightning getsback on trackVNL netball

VU-Western Lightning breathed a sigh of relief a er snapping a worrying two-game losing skid on Wednesday night.

Lightning’s 61-42 win over cellar-dweller Ballarat Pride put Lightning back in the top four in the Victorian Netball League championship and proved it can get the job done without star goalkeeper Fiona emann.

emann has moved to Scotland on her dual-citizen passport in a bid to be part of that nation’s Commonwealth Games team later this year.

“I’m really rapt and proud of her,” Lightning coach Matt Hills told the Weekly. “She has taken 12 months o from her school teaching and now she’s living the dream.

“It’s a massive loss for us because Brooke [ ompson] and Fiona have arguably been the best defensive group in the competition.”

e Lightning brought in a capable replacement in Samoan international Sononu Robertson to ll the void. But Robertson was unavailable to play against the Pride because of international commitments.

Her absence gave teenager Lucy Vercher an opportunity.

Vercher took a while to nd her feet early in the game but appeared more settled in a new role a er half-time.

A er leaking 24 goals in the rst half, the Lightning coughed up just 18 a er the break.

“Lucy has been playing a lot of wing defence and goal defence in the younger

division 1 team,” Hills said.“It’s a massive step up from that level and

a big change for her to go back to a position she played in under-19s, but she worked really hard.”

With a weaker back end on paper, the Lightning has to compensate with added scoring power and did that against Pride with a season-high 61 goals.

Amelia Hills was a thorn in the side of her opponents in a stunning mid-court display, while goalers Kate ompson (45 from 59) and Sophie Barr (16 from 19) posted big numbers.

While pleased with victory, Hills knows that for his side to cause an upset against unbeaten reigning premiers City West Falcons this week, his players will need to go up another level on both ends of the court.

“We’re going to have to be at our very best if you look at their [Falcons’} current form,” he said.

“We always look forward to that challenge and we’ve got a great group of girls that really want to work hard for each other.”

Meanwhile, the Falcons made it seven from seven with a 53-34 win against the Southern Saints.

 e Falcons again rolled out a three-pronged attack through Kath Knott (23 from 27), Alice Teague-Neeld (20 from 21) and Julia Woolley (10 from 13). \.
