labor mps to chase new-look seats

STATE POLITICS

Several sitting Labor members will contest seats in slightly altered electorates across Brimbank in next year’s state election.

Keilor MP Natalie Hutchins is seeking preselection for the newly named seat of Sydenham, which takes in Sydenham, Taylors Lakes, Calder Park, Taylors Hill, Hillside and Plumpton.

As reported by the Weekly in July, several Brimbank seats will be altered and others renamed as part of an overhaul of Victoria’s electoral boundaries.

e Electoral Boundaries Commission has completed redistributions in both houses of State Parliament .

Ms Hutchins said the Sydenham seat would see her represent about 40,000 residents who were part of her present electorate.

“ is is a step towards equity,” she said. “I think it was unfair that members of the west have been representing 55,000 people, where other electorates had only 20,000.”

Kororoit MP Marlene Kairouz will seek preselection for an electorate that includes Caroline Springs and Burnside.

Niddrie MP Ben Carroll plans to recontest his seat, which includes Keilor, Keilor Park and parts of Taylors Lakes.

Footscray MP Marsha omson intends to stand again in her electorate, which takes in Sunshine West, Brooklyn and some sections of Ardeer and Derrimut.

Derrimut MP Telmo Languiller will run for the new Wyndham-based seat of Tarneit .

Mr Languiller has represented residents of the Derrimut electorate since 1999. Derrimut has been divided between Kororoit, Footscray and the newly created seat of St Albans. \ BC

precinct plan change a ‘community win’CAIRNLEA

Cairnlea residents are celebrating following Places Victoria’s decision to remove an industrial park from its controversial plans for a mixed-use precinct.

Angry residents formed a community group in October amid fears that the gateway to Cairnlea was in danger of becoming a “concrete city”, with 146 townhouses, 50 apartments and 80 commercial sites planned for a vacant 38-hectare lot next to Cairnlea Drive.

Residents objected to plans to set up industry and also had concerns with the proposed removal of more than 300 sugar gum trees, which were deemed a “safety risk”, according to an arborist’s report commissioned by Places Victoria.

“It’s a good win for the community,” group leader Peter Brandecker said. “Removing industrial use was the main focus . We’re now focusing on the removal of the trees.

“We’re also seeking an independent arborist’s report, and we’re going to

seek an impact report to see what kind of e ect this development will have on the environment.”

A revised plan released by Places Victoria last week includes

“increased proposed open space”. Commercial areas will be located close

to the main intersection of Ballarat Road and Cairnlea Drive .

Places Victoria’s acting chief executive o cer, Peter Armstrong, said the changes were made in response to community feedback following consultation in September and October. “It has always been our vision

to develop a mixed-use precinct integrated with the Cairnlea community that provides diverse jobs, retail and housing opportunities. We believe the changes made to the dra masterplan will achieve this,” he said.

Places Victoria will nalise a planning scheme amendment to be submitted to the state government early next year. \

rail, buses, roads ‘lagging’TRANSPORT

Brimbank council has declared local public transport is disconnected, overcrowded and overpriced, creating an over-reliance on cars.

A council report seen by the Weekly states: “Brimbank has a disconnected public transport system that does not e ectively connect the entire municipality.

‘‘ e provision of bus services has lagged behind the development of new residential estates, further compounding the reliance on private vehicles. e rail network is overcrowded and only services a limited area of the municipality. ”

e council’s transport priorities paper, designed to support funding proposals, said Brimbank tra c had grown by up to 8 per cent each year. It cited 2011 census gures that showed 92 per cent of people working in Brimbank travelled by car, and only 4 per cent by public transport.

e report stated that roads had not kept pace with growth and residents were 11 per cent more likely to drive than the metro average. It called for “urgent attention” to three intersections: Kings /Taylors roads, Sunshine Avenue/Old Calder Highway, and Sunshine Avenue/Melton Highway. It also

recommended Taylors Road, west of Kings Road, be made a four-lane road.

e report called on the state government to duplicate and electrify the train line to Melton, make public transport more a ordable by removing Brimbank from zone 2, and create more frequent and safer services.

Council’s infrastructure and environment director, Paul Younis, said the council

would continue to advocate for better road connections, removal of level crossings, better walking and cycling infrastructure, and improved bus networks and train services.

Public Transport Users Association president Tony Morton

said Brimbank was one of the most car-dependent regions in Melbourne and solving tra c woes would require serious government investment. “Unfortunately, right now that money’s all being spent on the east-west link, which will hardly help anyone in Brimbank,” he said. “Public Transport Victoria is proposing a bus network upgrade that will provide higher-frequency bus services to Watergardens and Sunshine, straighten out some of the more circuitous routes and run every service seven days a week. ” \ BC

Sash, Emily, Emily, Leo and Sarah (pictured) are part of the Melton City event at Hannah Watts Park, Melton, from 6pm on Saturday, December 14. In Brimbank, carols will return to the tranquil surrounds of Keilor’s Overnewton Castle on Friday, December 20, from 7pm. Tickets cost $10 for a family of ve or $5 for a single ticket, with all proceeds going to the Brimbank Charitable Fund. Tickets are not available at the gate. \

prison a boon for businessA medium-security men’s prison being built in Ravenhall will be a boon for business in Sunshine and Deer Park, according to a Brimbank council report . To be built next to the existing Metropolitan Remand Centre and Dame Phyllis Frost Centre off the Deer Park bypass, the new prison is expected to house 1000 prisoners. “The construction and operation of Ravenhall prison will provide a range of economic and social bene ts to the Brimbank community,” the report found. “Brimbank businesses are well placed to provide goods and services that will support the operation of the prison, with the Sunshine and Deer Park town centres and Sunshine health and well-being precinct located nearby.” However, the council suggested upgrades might be needed for nearby Robinsons and Foley roads. \

library work beginsConstruction has started on Braybrook’s rst public library. The $12.5 million community hub at Braybrook Reserve is expected to be completed by December next year. The hub will include a new sports pavilion with a multi-purpose space , community meeting rooms and a range of children’s and family services . \

BRIEFSstreet thefts defy trend of falling crimeBRIMBANK

A rise in street the s has underpinned a 24.3 per cent increase in Brimbank robberies.

With the latest Victoria Police statistics for the year to September 30 showing a 7.1 per cent rise in total crime (from 17,902 incidents to 19,174), Inspector Chris Gilbert said a spike in street crimes went against recent reductions in other categories.

“Recent arrests and the identi cation of a number of other suspects provide con dence we will stem this rise and in uence further reductions,” he said.

“We increased the numbers of detectives in Brimbank to enhance our response, placing as much emphasis on prevention and disruption as we do on response.” Reports of the from, and of, cars were down 9.9 and 8.6 per cent respectively . Property damage reports also decreased 7.6 per cent (from 1730 to 1598).

Drug o ences rose 15.7 per cent (1079 to 1248).

Mr Gilbert said that against a statewide rise in family violence, Brimbank’s modest 3.1 per cent increase was “encouraging”. He said police had reversed a trend of antisocial behaviour in Sunshine’s CBD. \

car damage costsAlmost $100,000 worth of damage was caused to 37 cars in Brimbank in the past nancial year. New RACV Insurance data shows Brimbank recorded the state’s highest level of malicious damage, costing motorists $94,595. However police Inspector Chris Gilbert said there had been a signi cant drop in property damage (down 7.6 per cent) in Brimbank during the past 12 months. “The malicious damage to car stats factor in at around one for every 5 500 residents . Our theft from cars data is showing signs of reductions. The most common tip that seems to be ignored is about leaving items in the car that are valuable or may appear valuable.” \

your voiceBIKE TRAIL DEAD END(Weekly, November 19)

■ At a time of rising levels of obesity and declining levels of health in the community, these two missing links would connect the outer suburbs into a city-wide network of off-road paths. And that would allow for greater access to safe places for people to exercise, relax or commute . All levels of government should be prioritising funding for such simple projects that will save money on health care budgets in future.

Over the years, lots of money has been spent on advertising to get people to exercise to x health problems – but very little on the community infrastructure to give the average person easy access to safe places to exercise. Billions can be found for roads, but walking/bicycle paths struggle to attract a few hundred thousand dollars.

The Green Gully path would allow connection to the Maribyrnong River trail all the way into the city. The Kororoit Creek path to Federation

Trail that leads to Werribee will eventually connect to the city when another short section along the Westgate Freeway is completed.PHILLIP \ VIA WEB

HAMPSHIRE ROAD PLAN(Weekly, November 19)

■ This is an excellent idea. Sunshine’s roads can’t handle much more car traf c, so if our city is to grow we need to encourage walking, cycling and public transport. Creating safe bicycle infrastructure will encourage people to ride in to Sunshine, and that will relieve pressure on the roads and get people active . The best way to get people moving is to get them walking and cycling as part of their day-to-day lives, rather than sitting in their cars.SWOZZLE \ VIA WEB

TAKE STEPS FOR KIDS’ HEALTH

■ With VicHealth’s Walk to School Month drawing to a close, thousands of families across Victoria have taken steps to make walking a

central part of their school day. Our survey of 500 parents shows most enjoy walking as a family activity. Unfortunately, two-thirds still think streets are dangerous to cross and half say traf c is a hazard.

The fact is that kids need at least one hour of vigorous exercise every day for good physical and mental health. Getting to and from school on foot is a great way to get them started. We would love to see all the families taking part in Walk to School to make it a daily habit all year round.JERRIL RECHTER \ VICHEALTH CEO

my shoutCar doors are more solid than you realise. I discovered this the hard way, having one ung open by a taxi driver as I cycled past his parked car. The driver was apologetic, swearing he looked in the mirror. Little comfort for my scraped and battered body. Having exchanged some skin (mine) for some paint (his), we also exchanged details, but lack of more life-threatening injuries left police decidedly disinterested. The threat of “dooring” is a constant fear for the cyclist. Alert riding had, until now, kept incidents at close calls. But the sudden appearance of the taxi door proved the end of my lucky streak. As cycling rates rise, everyone has a responsibility to remember the road is there to share. A glance over the shoulder costs nothing. Collecting a cyclist can cost you more than $350 in nes or, in less happy circumstances, a life. \

After four weeks of hard work and inspiration, Sunshine Christian School pupils including Julia-Ana , Glory and Nikki (pictured) are milking their latest creation for all it is worth. More than 90 children put their maths, literacy and art skills to the test, building an igloo out of 963 milk containers and using 1.5 kilograms of hot glue sticks. ‘‘They estimated quantities of materials required, gathered data on collection patterns of milk cartons, collated and graphed results using various technologies and analysed data trends,” teacher Michelle Clarke said. \ BC

can-do culture our keyPLANNING

Brimbank has the potential to develop aspirational suburbs, according to leading demographer Bernard Salt.

Speaking at a Sunshine investment forum at Eureka Tower on November 22, Mr Salt said it was important that the municipality retain successful business people and built a culture of “can-do-ism”.

He said the creation of diverse housing options would make the area more attractive, in the mould of suburbs like Williamstown and Essendon.

“It won’t happen in the next ve or 10 years, but over the next 20 or 30 it can.

“[Brimbank] should look to create its own version of Toorak.

“It won’t be as big, but there are business people in their 40s and 50s who have established their businesses and connections, have made their money and had families. It’s a micro segment of Brimbank, but we need to cater for that.

“We want to keep their money, their culture and their contribution in Brimbank.”

Figures released by KPMG show Sunshine’s CBD is the biggest workplace destination in the west with 16,465 people employed there.

Just behind it is Laverton (15,563).“Jobs in Brimbank are growing at a rate of

almost one thousand a year,” Mr Salt said.He said a great strength of Brimbank, the

eighth-fastest growing region in Australia, was its diversity.

“So what culture will emerge in Brimbank? I think there will be a strong Asian culture

and Asian values. Brimbank is like Melbourne’s version of Cabramatta.”

Mr Salt said Brimbank residents, especially those of Generation Y, should ‘‘build a culture of ‘have-a-go-ism’ rather than a

culture of ‘handout-ism’.’’“ e aim is to have a thousand small

businesses form and grow.” Lobby group LeadWest’s chief executive

o cer, Craig Rowley , said Sunshine had the potential to become one of Melbourne’s great centres.

“Investors will see the value in the strategic position of Sunshine at the pivot point connecting the north-west growth corridor out to Melton and the south-west growth corridor out to Werribee,” he said. \

pokies hitting the jackpot where it’s least affordableBRIMBANK

More than $220 million was pumped through poker machines in state electorates across Brimbank last nancial year.

A report released last week by Monash University researcher Charles Livingstone shows that disadvantaged areas on Melbourne’s fringe have high levels of loss.

Brimbank’s biggest spend was in the electorate of Derrimut – which includes Albion, Derrimut and sections of St Albans and Sunshine – where $63.50 million was pumped through 439 gaming machines at seven venues.

Dr Livingstone said there was a correlation between gambling losses and the number of gaming machines in disadvantaged areas .

ere was a need to reduce the size of gaming venues and restrict the amount of money people could gamble to make pokies “harmless fun”, he said.

“What we have got in suburban pokies venues ... is machines where you can easily lose $600 an hour. ere should be maximum bets of $1, limiting losses to $120 per hour.

We need to look at solutions, and there are suggestions $1 bets are the way to go.”

Monash University’s research showed punters in the electorate of Niddrie spent $41.20 million on 261 machines across four venues.

More than $42.14 million was put through 301 machines at four venues in Keilor; $39.14 million in seven venues across 407 machines in Melton; and $20.34 million on 181 machines at three venues in

Kororoit. More than $4.65 million was spent at the Braybrook Hotel,

which had a recent application for 19 more machines rejected.

In August, the Weekly revealed there had been an almost $8 million drop in annual pokies expenditure in the municipality of Brimbank. Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation gures showed $137.63 million was lost last nancial year, down from $145.61 million in 2011-12. \

DECEMBER 3, 2013 \ BRIMBANK & NORTH WEST WEEKLY 11

“It was a bit of a dream and this place was a bit of a dump,” says Amie Batalibasi, founder and director of Colour Box Studio in Footscray. Batalibasi, a fledgling documentary filmmaker, was on the hunt for a personal studio space

when she stumbled upon an old tattoo parlour at 236 Nicholson Street, Footscray.

As soon as she stepped into the space, she began picturing a community-based creative hub, an idea that had been playing in her mind for several years.

“I kind of walked in here and imagined that this could be a place where I could invite my networks and community and people that I knew who had their own creative practices to come and use the space to showcase their work,” Batalibasi says.

Her dream became a reality when Colour Box, backed by a team of dedicated volunteers, was officially launched in late 2012. In little over a year, it has showcased more than 100 artists through its niche programs, pop-up shops and exhibitions.

“We aim to provide and showcase a diverse range of artists and a diverse range of art forms,” Batalibasi says of the hub’s ethos. For the first few months, she tried to finance the venture herself but then turned to Pozible crowdfunding to raise enough money to ensure the group could run events until October. Pozible is an online platform where people wanting to get a project off the ground call for public donations.

Colour Box Studio managed to raise more than $8000 from the small but crucial contributions of 166 people.

“Setting up a space costs a lot of money and I was kind of a little overwhelmed at the expense,” Batalibasi

Colour Box Studio likes to think outside the square, writes RoBeRt Fedele

says. “[Pozible] is a revolutionary idea. It’s funding projects that I guess on a community level wouldn’t be funded otherwise.”

Humble and sporting an infectious smile, Batalibasi says her role as director has been an eye-opener.

“I do everything from buying the toilet paper to putting the bins out, to managing artists to doing media and social networking,” she says. “I do a lot of paperwork. But I really love every aspect of it.”

Batalibasi says Footscray was the perfect location for the space because of the suburb’s diverse community.

“Footscray is a really culturally diverse and creative community. That’s the inspiration for Colour Box and it continues to inspire everything I do,’’ she says.

“I feel really comfortable here walking down the street. It really is a community and you get to know people. You see people hanging out on the street. Footscray is a bit of a meeting place and I think that’s really unique.”

Batalibasi says that while she has driven Colour Box, it couldn’t have got off the ground without her core group of volunteer managers. Sitting beside her today is Shae Rooke, the public art program co-ordinator. Rooke is a Melbourne-based artist working with photography, video and installation. She joined Colour Box after responding to an advertisement in artsHub Australia.

Rooke has overseen an eclectic mix of events during the past year, many of them taking shape in an alley next door. One artist covered the entire building in chequered blankets. Another cooked everyone an Egyptian feast in the back courtyard and played a video of his grandmother talking about recipes handed down

from generation to generation. “It’s been great,” Rooke says. “I’ve learnt heaps. It’s been lots of work but it’s definitely paid off. It’s a great space.”

A central aspect of Colour Box’s vision has been pop-up events. This month it will feature a summer program that includes a pop-up shop with the creations of 20 Melbourne artists, and workshops. Batalibasi says the pop-up concept was the right fit. “It’s funny because pop-up is one of those catch phrases at the moment and I guess we embraced that style because it meant that we could have short-term programs and we could really reinvent ourselves every time.”

The reinvention isn’t exclusive to programming, with Colour Box on the verge of being kicked out of its space to make way for a 12-storey apartment building.

“We’ve been given the boot,” Batalibasi jokes. “I always knew this would be a short-term lease. We knew it would be a year and it’s just been a bit more than that. The idea was to see what we could do within that time and develop a model and a framework for what Colour Box Studio is and see how that would roll.”

Batalibasi says she’s confident the group’s profile and online presence mean there is much more to come.

“It’s been a really interesting ride. It’s going to be sad to leave this space,’’ she says.

“But it’s not going to be the end. Leaving here is a really good chance to see how we can evolve and grow and embrace that part of our title, which is pop-up arts space.

“We’re not going to fade away and disappear. That’s for sure.” \

teen thrives on the bulldog methodTAYLORS LAKES

ere are high hopes a Brimbank teenager will become another Western Bulldogs success story.

Emma Camilleri , 16, was one of 40 young leaders who last week graduated from the Bulldogs’ inaugural Whitten Project .

e initiative seeks to instil healthy values and sharpen the skills of year 9 and 10 students from ve western suburbs municipalities.

As part of an eight-month program involving 16 sessions, Emma learned football skills from young Bulldog Jason Tutt , enjoyed talks by Geelong premiership captain Tom Harley and former AFL player and Bali bombing survivor Jason McCartney, and almost kicked a goal at Etihad Stadium during half-time of a Bulldogs match.

Another key part of the program was the planning of a community project.

e Taylors Lakes Secondary College student has organised a netball camp for early next year to help young players learn the game’s rules.

“We had to target a local club, nd out the strengths and limitations of that club and then design a program to help them,” she

said. “Some younger players can struggle with the rules of netball, so the camp will help them with that.”

Emma said she found rubbing shoulders with the likes of Harley and McCartney inspiring.

“ I learnt all about strength and working on your limitations,” she said.

“ e whole thing has given me con dence to talk to my peers and get involved in community events. ” \

We’re all looking for a little sunshine in our lives. But for Derrimut nine-year-old Konna , life isn’t quite that simple.

He was born with limited vision and a body that doesn’t produce melanin, which helps protect the skin from the ravages of the sun. e diagnosis of oculocutaneous albinism was made when he was just four months old. It means he must be fully clothed and wear tinted glasses whenever he’s outdoors.

Konna’s mother, Cindy Turkovic , says the rare disorder is one of the reasons he recently had to leave behind the school he loved. “He loved that school but it got too big,” she says. “With 600 kids all dressed in blue, he got a bit lost and couldn’t nd his mates. But he’s tted in beautifully [at Ardeer Primary School].’’

Konna’s condition hasn’t stopped him from trying out a variety of pursuits such as cricket, choirs and drama groups. “He’s very social; he doesn’t let it hinder him at all,” Turkovic says. “[But] what people with good sight can see at 18 metres away, Konna needs to be three metres away [to see]. Even then it’s still blurry; his sight will never be clear. He’s got plenty of dreams; it’s just not all of them can come true.”

Turkovic, who also has a 19-year-old son with a disability, admits life can be tough. But she has plenty of motivation to get out of bed each day. “ e love I get keeps me going,” she says. “And advances in technology – the hope that one day there will be a cure .”

Turkovic is full of praise for Vision Australia, which has helped her understand Konna’s condition and guide his transition into education.

In the lead-up to Christmas, people are being encouraged to donate to Vision Australia by lighting a virtual candle and helping the organisation support families of children who are blind or have limited vision. \

Burglary charges A Keilor Downs man accused of stealing more than $155,000 worth of goods in a series of burglaries targeting elderly Ballarat residents has been refused bail . Aaron Heffernan, 25, laughed, smirked and shook his head for much of his bail application in Ballarat Magistrates Court on November 25. Heffernan is charged with 99 offences, including aggravated burglary, burglary, theft, loitering, and resisting arrest. The charges stem from almost 50 household burglaries over the past 11 months. Opposing Heffernan’s bail, Ballarat’s Detective Senior Constable Steve Murphy said Heffernan was arrested after a four-month investigation . Last week to switch! The final countdown to digital-only TV has begun

The analog TV switch off is happening on 10 December 2013* – and there’s no turning back. After this date you won’t see anything if you’re not ready for digital-only TV.

What do I have to do?Remember, to keep watching free-to-air TV shows, you’ll need either:• one set-top box or a digital TV recorder for each analog TV you use; or• a new TV with a built-in digital tuner.

Most importantly, you do not have to buy a new TV if you do not want to.

Most antennas and cabling should work after the digital switchover. However, if you have any concerns about your reception, you may consider asking an endorsed Antenna Installer to check your antenna and cabling.

If you have any other questions, or to find your nearest endorsed Antenna Installer, visit our website or call the Digital Ready Information Line.

Don’t put it off any longer. Get ready for digital TV today.

Melbourne and surrounding areas switch on 10 December 2013*

*Please note: switch off may occur earlier in some towns. Residents in these towns will be informed about the switchover dates. See the website for more information.

Trusted advice at Essendon Mazda Having someone on board with sound advice when choosing to buy a new car is invaluable and, if trust is gained, even better. These are the attributes that Joe Cucuzza, dealer principal at Essendon Mazda, believes makes his outfit the success it has been for more than 30 years.“We want lifetime customers,” explains Cucuzza. “So when a person buys a car from Essendon Mazda we pledge to treat them with honesty, decency and respect.“We will address a question or problem straightaway because we are determined to be the best Mazda dealer around.”Cucuzza says the dealership sells and services the complete range of Mazda vehicles, from the funky and fun Mazda 2 to the tough Mazda BT-50 series. And when it comes to servicing, the Mazda dealership provides plenty of perks.“We keep customers mobile while their car is getting serviced by providing a complimentary loan car and shuttle service to local shopping centres, including DFO and Westfield. We can also drop our customers home.“And with our recently upgraded facilities, Mazda owners can have their car washed and vacuumed while it’s in for a service.”Essendon Mazda previously served the local community while trading on Keilor Road and is now in Essendon Fields.“We have a purpose-built, state-of-the-art building with a showroom that has recently undergone major renovation.”Essendon Mazda, at 345 Wirraway Road, Essendon Fields, Opens daily for sales and Mondays-Saturdays until noon for servicing.Inquires: 9374 2222 or www.essendonmazda.com.au

Things you didn’T know abouT moToring … Last September at Shannon’s Melbourne Spring Classic Auction, a 1966 left-hand-drive 21-window Kombi fetched $42,000.

(SU

PPLI

ED

)

There aren’t many vehicles that have lasted longer than Volkswagen’s Beetle; 58 years and 21.5 million made. But one

that has managed it is yet another Volkswagen – the almost as ubiquitous Kombi.

Would you believe they are only now ceasing production in Brazil?

The Beetle started down the line in 1945 in postwar Germany, although a handful were built before the unpleasantries, and the last of the Type 1s rolled out of a Mexican factory in June 2003. The Kombi began production late in 1949 and has lasted 64 years.

It was Volkswagen’s Dutch importer who first had the idea of building a van based on the Beetle chassis. The company had made several flat-bed delivery vehicles on Beetle running gear to ferry parts around the factory and, inspired by this, he sketched up his idea for a van. It was essentially a big box on wheels. It looked a lot like a Kombi.

With the same engine as the much smaller Beetle and aerodynamics roughly on a par with Captain Cook’s cottage, Kombis were never quick vehicles – something well known to the legions of motorists who got stuck behind them as they slowed to a crawl up just about any gradient. Contrary to what some owners swore was fact, surfboards on the roof rack never assisted the aerodynamic profile.

Nor did replacing the VW logo at the front with a peace symbol.

Its shape was the Kombi’s major attraction. It yielded a lot of internal space for its external profile, despite the engine bay taking a large

whack out of the rear, which meant that even with the generous tail gate, entry to the back was only from the sliding door at the side.

As Brazilian production halts at the end of the year there will have been 1.6 million

made there, on top of the 7.9 million made in plants in Austria, Germany, Mexico

and South Africa. Kombis were assembled here too, along with Beetles, in Volkswagen’s Clayton plant between 1954 and 1976.

There have been lots of different Kombis, including a ute, a people

mover and a delivery van with a raised roof. Camping conversions were plentiful

and there was even a special build for a hearse. The RAAF once used them as mobile air traffic control towers.

By far the most sought-after among collectors is the rare 21-window van, with a split windscreen.

In the 1990s Volkswagen started building Kombis with water-cooled engines, but by then the writing was on the wall.

Everywhere except Brazil. Brazilians would keep on buying them if they could, but Kombis have been forced out by new safety laws over there effectively bringing an end to forward-control vans, or vans in which the driver sits on top of, or ahead of, the front wheels.

Brazil’s special final edition of 1200 units, with retro hubcaps and interior features, will end the Kombi forever. \

VSDCA East-west second xi A ghting 95 from Sam Mangano has Sunshine’s east-west second XI well placed in the east-west 1st XI. Mangano, who had scored just ve runs in six innings before Saturday, was the second-last man out. The Crows were bowled out for 187 and have Mt Waverley 1-18 from nine overs in reply. \

VSDCA division 3Sunshine’s third XI posted 223 against Kew in the north-west 3rd XI. Wicketkeeper Jake Warwick (73) and Aaron Graham (63) both got half-centuries, while opener Michael Walsh (44) also made crucial runs. Bowled out in the 69th over, the Crows had eight overs at Kew, with stumps at 0-20. \

VSDCA division 4Sunshine’s fourth XI had a disastrous day against Kew in the north-west 4th XI. The Crows sent Kew into bat and watched them rack up 6-341 in just 48 overs. Sunshine is 9-51 in reply after 22 overs, with number 10 Josh Michetti (25) the only batsman to provide real resistance. \

WDCAGrand United will look to secure the six points against Gellibrand in a top-of-the-table A Turf clash after posting 204 from 76.5 overs on Saturday. The Gorillas, a long-time powerhouse of the WDCA, are yet to lose a game in A Turf this season. \

BRIEFSpark pulls offamazing winA remarkable comeback against Elsternwick on Saturday has seen Deer Park climb within four points of ladder leader Richmond Union in Bowls Victoria’s division 1, section 1.

Trailing by 35 shots early on, Deer Park produced an incredible turnaround to win three rinks and the match, 79-71.

e result moves Deer Park to second, one point ahead of Werribee, a er slipping to third following consecutive losses to Bundoora RSL and Richmond Union.

Mark Brunato (12-26) was the only Deer Park skipper to lose a rink, with Adam Berry (20-17), Neil Smith (28-14) and Paul Dorgan (19-14) all getting up.

Bowler Steve Kiselis said the side remained on track for an impressive season. “We started slowly and basically had a great comeback. We’ve got a good track record at Elsternwick and with some steady bowling and club morale we were able to come back.

“We are gelling pretty well and that’s a big part of it. e selectors are doing a

good job with . . . who they’re pairing up in the rinks.”

Deer Park travels to Montmorency this Saturday for its round 10 clash.

Over in division 3, section 1, Sunshine VRI remains one point o the bottom of the ladder a er a 59-82 loss to

Yarraville-Footscray.VRI had only one rink winner and sits on 34 points, one ahead of rival Sunshine RSL, both sides having just one win from nine games. Meanwhile, RSL hosted Altona and went

down 2-59 to 16-86. In division 2 section 1,

Sunshine City dropped to fourth a er a gigantic 17-101 to 1-59 loss to Altona. A week earlier, City was third with a shot di erence of minus-15; that has now blown out to minus-57, the fourth-worst in the competition.

Keilor lost 15-93 to 3-88 against Broadmeadows in division 2, section 2, while in division 4, section 1, St Albans went down 2-65 to Altona North 16-82. \

lower order saves blushesNWMCA

Some lower-order hitting saved Kealba-Green Gully from an embarrassing day in the North West Metro Cricket Association’s George Luscombe Shield on Saturday.

Playing fellow nal-four aspirant Buckley Park, Kealba was in trouble early when Andrew Lambropoulos was bowled for eight before opener Daniel Hewitt and Evan Long began rebuilding the innings with a 41-run stand.

Hewitt’s wicket triggered a collapse of 7-53 and Kealba found itself reeling at 8-105.

But number eight Danny Viani and number 10 Andrew Webb frustrated Buckley Park with an important stand of 73 before Viani was bowled for 28. Webb followed soon a er for 51 as Kelba made 190.

With three overs at Buckley Park, Kealba made the perfect start when Jason Gordon was out for one. Chris Benson (7) and Daniel Moloney (4) will resume at 1-13 on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Sydenham-Hillside’s decision to put Strathmore Heights into bat was vindicated.

Strathmore made 141 and Sydenham is 7-181 and chasing outright victory. \ DP

keilor hopes to win . . . one dayVTCA

Keilor will be chasing a rst win of the Victorian Turf Cricket Association Senior Division season in a one-day clash on Saturday a er the rst day of the match against Greenvale was washed out.

Play was called o a er the pitch was deemed unsafe to play on following rain.

Keilor is last on the table and yet to win, while Greenvale is unbeaten and second behind ladder leader South Caul eld.

Day one of Keilor’s second XI match, also against Greenvale, was similarly washed out.

In the north division, Keilor Park is 1-14 from 14 overs in its chase against Laverton.

Keilor Park put Laverton in rst and struck early, with opener Sam Young out for his third consecutive duck.

But an in-form Matt O’Brien (49) went about resurrecting the top order with crucial runs, while 51 from Brent Sheean later in the innings, plus a few other starts, kept the scorecard ticking over.

In the north A1 division, Taylors Lakes posted 7-259 from 80 overs against St Albans.

St Andrews’ clash with Aberfeldie is precariously placed. St Andrews was dismissed for 109 but in 33 overs at Aberfeldie struck frequently to leave the away team teetering at 6-92 at stumps, with top-scorer Kieren Gray (40) the h wicket to fall.

Sunshine United was bowled out for just 80 in the two-day clash with Newport-Digman in west B1 division, but hit back late in the day to reduce Newport to 4-22 from 21 overs.

Sunshine Heights has already taken rst-innings points against Airport West St Christopher’s. Sent in to bat Airport West was bowled for just 119. By stumps, Sunshine Heights had reached 2-141.

Deer Park will be trying to avoid an outright loss against Point Cook. Bowled out for 57, Deer Park then bounced back to dismiss Airport West for 63. In its second innings, Deer Park was 3-23 at stumps. \

sub-district cricket

Sunshine is in a good position to snare its second win of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association’s east/west First XI season a er a solid day against Mt Waverley on Saturday.

e Crows were disciplined with the ball and outstanding in the eld, bowling out Mt Waverley for 159. Laka Khan took four wickets.

Sunshine’s reply reached 0-8 by the close and the Crows will continue the chase with 10 wickets in hand this Saturday.

Batsman Troy Stone said the team was having a much-improved season.

“ ere are a lot of positives and we’re turning the corner,” he said.

“We started o really well against Mt Waverley and to end up 0-8 overnight is a really positive sign so we’ll go in with con dence we can win next week.” \ DP
