Remarkable growth and expansion... this is what the Mediclinic Tzaneen has experienced over the past eleven years. And the next major expansion is about to begin.

The fi rst patient was admitt ed to the hospital in October 2003, aft er an extended legal batt le for a hospital licence to be granted. Two doctors spearheaded the drawn-out negotiations: Dr Sarel Spies, at the time the Tzaneen area’s most senior general practitioner, and the much younger and dynamic Dr Ig van Rensburg.

The new hospital had 64 beds, two theatres, twelve beds in the paediatric ward, four beds in ICU and twelve beds in the maternity section.

A year or four ago the 64 beds became 130, two theatres became three, twelve beds in paediatric became seventeen, twelve beds in maternity became 24 and a neonatal ICU was added, with six beds.

The next expansion — construction

to begin early next year — is planned to make the score board look like this (current score in brack-ets): 184 beds (130), four theatres (3), thirty beds in ICU (10), twenty in neonatal (6) and a new twenty bed day care ward. Added to this will be major ex-pansions to the hospital’s kitchen, workshop, laun-dry, admin offi ces, pharmacy, the casualty section as well as new consulting rooms for twenty spe-cialists (at present seventeen specialists are associ-

ated with the hospital).A second physician is expected to move to Tzaneen early in the new year, not long aft er a second surgeon opened a practice at the hospital earlier this year.

These fi gures represent dra-matic growth. No wonder that

Mediclinic Tzaneen is amongst the top three RSA hospitals in the strong MediClinic group (with hospitals in Namibia, the Middle East and Switzer-

land).Another bit of exciting news for Tzaneen and

surrounds is that a new radiologist will be starting in Tzaneen (in the hospital) on 1 December, and he is installing the latest state of the art equipment. Read more about this in the main body of today’s Bulletin.

Brilliant news is that the installation of an MRI Scanner is very high on the priority list for

Tzaneen. At about R10 million for a scanner, it is not an item that is being bought from pett y cash over the coun-ter, and some proper planning and budgeting will have to be done.

Hulle rapporteer direk aan die direksie, wat bestaan uit plaaslike drs Ig van Rensburg (voorsitter), Alex Revelas, Johan Botha, John Kubayi en mnre Johann Geertsema en Len van der Walt, albei van MediClin-ic-hoofkantoor. Regs is ’n fi kse dr Pieter Botes, die oudste praktiserende dokter in Tzaneen (73). Hy speel nog weekliks die jonger manne fl ou op die gholfbaan. Die opleiding van personeel geniet deurlopend aandag in die MediClinic. En opleiding word nie net vir junior personeel aangebied nie; dit word deur die bank aangebied en selfs vir die dokters word ook slypskole aangebied. Onder is verpleegpersoneel besig in ‘n opleidingsessie. Op die foto regs is ‘n senior verpleegkundige besig om ‘n vroeggebore baba in ‘n broeikas te versorg. Die foto onder is van ‘n binneplaas wat keurig in stand gehou word,

sodat pasiënte wat al sterk genoeg is om te loop en ‘n bietjie buitelug en sonskyn kan geniet, daar kan ontspan.
