SUCCESSNET STORY

But how do you know how much business you’re generating? It’s easy to remember what you’ve received in the last week or so. But over the months and years, it becomes harder to

track – unless you do something about it. How do you track the business you are generating?

Take recently retired BNI member Jim Adams, an electrician (his son has now taken over his membership). He’d been in BNI for over six years, and when we asked him this question, his response genuinely astonished us.

He pulled out a slightly battered and well-worn notepad, saying that the answer to that question could be found inside. On every single page, Jim had stuck in BNI referral slips he received, and beneath each one, notes on what had happened to that referral. These notes were meticulous. Jim wrote down whether the referral had turned into business, if so how much business had it led to, was there any other follow up required, and did the referral lead to any spin-off business.

As a result, Jim could proudly tell us that BNI had been worth, on average, in excess of £50,000 per year throughout his membership. Naturally, it had grown over time, and there were peaks and troughs in terms of his returns – but on average, he was very pleased with what he received. And we were delighted to hear it!

Jim’s notepad got us thinking though. How do other BNI members track the business they receive through their membership? Whether it’s via a complicated spreadsheet or the member module available in BNI Connect, or a simple handwritten version like Jim’s, we would highly recommend that you look back and track the business you’ve generated from your membership of BNI.

When you do this, obviously you should consider the income generated by direct referrals – clearly this stems from being in BNI. But we’d also encourage you to think about the spin-off business that you’ve picked up. Whenever you write an invoice, consider how that bit of business came to you. Sometimes, the link back to BNI isn’t initially clear. However, when you consider that the client was introduced to you via person A, you met person A through person B, and you met person B though a BNI referral – we would argue that you wouldn’t have invoiced that business were it not for BNI.

Why not have a look back through your invoices, and see what BNI has been worth to you?

What is a

BNI members stay in BNI for many reasons. Some appreciate the personal development they get from being in BNI; others recognize the importance of having a trusted team of suppliers around them; while others really value the camaraderie that being in a referral group provides. For many though, the amount of business that they are generating through their BNI membership is the key.

BNI TRAINING & ACTIVITIES

More than 80 members attended the Goal Setting Workshop in January this year at the KL West Pelangi Sentral Office. More than 60 members had attended in December 2013.

Close to 150 members are now fully aware of the importance of starting the year with a practical plan and the proper way to draw up a plan and how to execute it throughout the year.

Due to testimonies of the members and the importance of this, several more classes will be conducted throughout 2014 and are not to be missed.

The book written by Dr Ivan Misner, Master of Success, was the basis of reference at the workshop. All members are recommended to read this New York Bestseller to equip themselves in planning their business.

Masters of Success Tip :“Successful people put goals in writing and work out a plan in visual form. Reinforce the plan frequently to remind yourself.”

* This book is available at the workshop at a special price.

In Klang Valley KL West and KL South regions, 37,000 business opportunities were recorded in 2013 and businesses recorded was more than RM600 Million in 2013. For the past 14 years we have proudly assisted more than 3,000 companies to grow their businesses by referrals using the BNI proven system in this region.

Referrals are larger and of better quality due to the maturity, and longer relationships built between members in larger chapters.

Stay longer, take BNI seriously, handle any adversity that may arise and thrive to succeed irrespective of economic conditions.

You will succeed. You cannot fail in BNI. We may not have learnt how to succeed yet. And it is never too late to start learning.

BNI TRAINING & ACTIVITIES

The BNI Directors from various regions shared on how they have successfully executed the BNI system to achieve outstanding results.

It was an inspiring workshop. Many of the Director Consultants came from regions with an average chapter size of more than 45 members.

Quyen, the Executive Director from BNI Hanoi West, Vietnam, who in December launched a Hall of Fame Platinum Chapter with the Core Group of 61 members! Joining her are Rose from BNI Ho Chi Minh West and Wilson from BNI Hong Kong who have both launched multiple Hall of Fame Chapters.

Everyone shared openly and many were moved by the depth of the sharing - laughing and sometimes tearing when we listened to the journey of some of the Directors.

Many of us found our “Why” that weekend – the reason we chose to become BNI Directors and the contributions we want to make to our community and our country. As BNI Directors, we can truly impact people’s lives for the better. This was shared in the Directors’ Goal Setting session.

BNI PERAKBNI REGIONAL HIGHLIGHTS

I n August 2012, Patrick Ng, a financial planner from Great Eastern Life visited Uptown Chapter and was greatly inspired to bring the idea back to his hometown, Ipoh to

help the local business owners grow their business.

With the encouragement and support from BNI Head Office, Ms. Avryl Au & Mr. Andy Wong, he gathered a few close friends and started off by having informal coffee sessions regularly in a nearby McDonalds restaurant. With a core group of about 15 members in April 2013, BNI Ipoh Pioneer Chapter was launched with 23 members and by the year-end, breached the 40 member mark with a business transaction of more than RM 2 million.

Recently, it celebrated its 1st Anniversary with 44 members on its registry with only 2 dropouts from its original core group. Its success so far was largely attributed to the commitment and closely-knitted on-going relationship amongst its members with the Leadership Team constantly guiding the members along with the right mindset & culture.

With the current high positive energy displayed here, we see great potential of growth in spreading the BNI concept further throughout the Perak region. Already plans are in place for the setting-up of its 2nd chapter in Ipoh. Truly, we are beginning to see how BNI is changing the way Ipoh does business!

Dr. Lee Mun Wai is the Medical Director of Lee Eye Centre (LEC) in Ipoh, Perak which has a long established reputation for providing quality and comprehensive eye care.At present, he heads the Vitreoretinal service at LEC. He graduated from the University of Manchester and started his ophthalmology training in 1999.

D r. Lee was conferred Member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (MRCOphth), Member of the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh (MRCSEd) and Fellow

of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (FRCSGlasg) in 2003.

Returning to Malaysia in 2009, Dr. Lee started working alongside his father in Lee Eye Centre which is the largest private eye care centre in Perak with four specialists. Being the only trained sub-specialist in Retinal Surgery then, he was able to provide his niche services to the community while growing his business.

This father of three cites his determination and adaptability as key factors that have helped him to overcome the major challenges early in his business. He had to adapt to the local population’s different expectations regarding their eyes and healthcare in general. Another hurdle was to market his services while acquiring new management skills.

A member of the Pioneer Chapter since April 2013, he feels that he has yet to fully utilize the BNI system in its entirety. However he acknowledges that BNI has presented him with the opportunity to increase the exposure of his centre and market his services through his Chapter members. And they are in very capable hands as Dr. Lee, a Retinal Surgeon trained in UK, Singapore and Australia performs complex retinal and cataract surgeries and is also competent in glaucoma, pterygium, squint, eyelid surgeries and even corneal transplants.

Page 19: BNI BRAG Magazine Vol. 2

Staying true to their core value of Provision of the Highest Level of Eye Care Services, LEC has positioned itself to be an early adopter of advanced technology with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment. It has the world’s fastest LASIK suite, and the only unit in Malaysia. It is also the only private center in Perak with a fully trained Retinal Specialist.

Dr. Lee’s commitment to provide the best goes beyond having the latest equipment in his centre. He believes in offering value added services to the patients to improve their overall experience in LEC. Hence LEC has a splendid waiting lobby, a comfortable Day Ward with beds and recliners, VIP rooms, two operating theatres and the LEC Refractive Suite. Realizing that the human touch is important to a person’s well being, there are caring Patient Relations Officers to take care of the patients’ needs.

‘’Strive to find a balance in everything that you do” is Dr. Lee’s best advice he can give others. He defines success as how satisfied one is with what one has achieved. And the best way to achieve long term success is to maintain a positive attitude and a strong work ethic.

He also enjoys the camaraderie among his Chapter members and he will stay on. For the future, Dr. Lee has plans to grow his business and tap into the regional market. He hopes to achieve his goal by leveraging on BNI’s International network.

Dr. Lee Mun WaiMRCO phth, MRCS Ed, FRCS Glasg, FRCS EdVitreoretinal Surgeon & Medical Director of LECPioneer Chapter, Ipoh, member since 2013

As a Retinal Surgeon, he is responsible for the management of retinal diseases such as retinal detachment, diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration and epiretinal membrane among others. Dr. Lee is a Visiting Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Perak Community Specialist Hospital as well as the Ipoh Specialist Hospital.

Not one to rest on his laurels, Dr. Lee is actively involved in ophthalmic research and clinical trials and has presented his work nationally and internationally in numerous conferences. He has more than 20 scientific publications and has contributed several book chapters.

Dr. Lee is motivated by his desire to always improve himself and his knowledge. “The advances in my field are rapid and I have to keep abreast of changes so that I can provide the best for my patients.” he says.

Almost all manner of eye diseases can be managed in LEC as it offers comprehensive eye care services such as cataract surgery, glaucoma management, corneal transplant and children’s eye care.

Currently he sees the need to expand his services particularly in the LASIK and Retinal Surgery Department. He is certain that being in BNI, with a network of professionals who are dedicated to help each others’ business grow, will benefit him greatly.

PERSONALITY PROFILE

Richard Gan B.A (Hons) Econ (Essex) and a Registered Estate Agent, comes from a humble beginning in Muar. He is married, and has a 19 year old son

studying in Canada.

Richard has been in Lighthouse Chapter for the past 13 years. He is a pioneer in the Chapter and is a Double Gold Member. Inviting members is his forte and he is known among his Chapter members for this attribute.

From his many years in BNI, he has observed that synergy – extra effectiveness created when people combine efforts – truly works.

He turned this observation into reality by spearheading the formation of Umegar Realty Sdn Bhd. Partnering with key people who hold similar beliefs, his brainchild has provided a better platform and a ground-breaking concept for the local real estate industry.

“We want to meet the challenges of individual agents. We want them to join forces with us for greater impact and influence. So we have come up with a revolutionary profit sharing concept, based on company turnover” says Richard, who has more than 15 years’ experience in this field.

Umegar derives its unique name from the key word – mega – which is an obvious indication of Richard and the core team’s vision for their company. “The U is about you, and the whole name sounds Malaysian yet different. It will be a force to be reckoned with,” he says.

His future plans for Umegar is to be recognized as number one in Malaysia. This will be a personal achievement for him and a chance to leave a lasting legacy. And as a faithful supporter of BNI, Richard cites, “Once we have achieved that No. 1 status, we can contribute more to BNI.”

“Although knowledge and experience are important, trust is essential in this business,” says Richard. It is this quality that has given him an edge over the others in this field. He values relationships and has patiently established relationships through the years – which have served him well in his personal life and in his business.

As a seasoned entrepreneur, his advice for young, upcoming ones is this. “There are two ways of learning,” he says. “From your own mistakes, or from other people’s mistakes. It is easier to learn and receive imparting from others.”

The best advice he ever got was - Enrich others and sincerely help them to develop their lives. Umegar is an excellent avenue for him to practise this.

PERSONALITY PROFILE

Applying the motto of “Changing the Way the World does Business”, Tho Mei Poh joined forces with other partners and built a bigger and larger platform

to do real estate. With her 20 years experience in the property market plus a passion in sales and rental of Industrial properties, she formed Umegar Realty Sdn. Bhd. with some partners.

“Meeting and dealing with clients and trying to close sales were my major challenges when I first started out” states this mother of three. Fueled by her desire to start her own company since obtaining her Real Estate License, having very little business background did not deter her.

She identifies her persistence, patience, diligence and Innovation as her major attributes that have contributed to her business’ success.

As a four year old member in BNI, she has participated in different roles such as Mentor Coordinator, Network Education Coordinator, Visitor Host, Membership Committee and President of Dealmakers Chapter. She is the current President of United Chapter. She joined BNI to create a wider and better business network for her company. The concept of being able to contribute in BNI’s community of giving and sharing with other business professionals has been one of the main reasons for her to stay In BNI.

Being in BNI has given Mei Poh ample opportunities to upgrade herself in various aspects of her business and management skills. Thus she firmly believes that in BNI she has vast opportunity to be trained and mentored to achieve her fullest potential as a business person.

It was in BNI that she saw the prospect to collaborate with like-minded business people such as Richard Gan (from Lighthouse Chapter) to form Umegar Realty Sdn Bhd, building a new platform and concept for the Malaysian real estate industry. Truly, it was changing the way the world does business.

Now, Umegar Realty Sdn Bhd provides trainings and career advancement for aspiring full time real estate negotiators. Their offices are located in major cities in Malaysia, such as KL, Penang and Johor Bahru. They are equipped with a larger professional workforce and can provide quality services to their clients.

In the future, Umegar Realty’s plans are to expand its business and services into Asia Pacific countries such as Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Myanmar and Australia.

With BNI’s worldwide networking in more than 50 countries and with BNI Connect Global, a state of the art technology, it can connect and create more business opportunities among its members. This will provide an excellent platform for Umegar Realty Sdn Bhd to achieve its future plans.

Wui Kian joined BNI in October 2007. It was the business aspect that has kept him in BNI. And he has not looked back since, for his business has increased in leaps and bounds. He attributes his success to having learnt and implemented the basics of BNI into his business. Imagine this...

You are in Europe enjoying your holiday ( while working... as usual ) with your family, and suddenly received a call that needs you to immediately respond to a purchase request! You wanted to look for Wi-Fi hotspot, but can’t get one, and you have no choice but to activate your international roaming

feature of your phone ( NOT knowing how much this roaming will cost you... )

Imagine this, again...You are in a restaurant with free Wi-Fi while travelling needing to send your final quotation to a very big potential, the Internet is so slow that you can’t even send any email out, what are you going to do now? Look for another free Wi-Fi area? What if the speed is still slow? What if the time is not on your side?

A few marketing gimmicks that you must know! There are plenty of providers in market shouting “FREE calls”, “Unlimited internet data when you travel with us” that are so attractive BUT very misleading and not true! How can one do business FREE and UNLIMITED? But sadly this is what has happened in the market and these irresponsible crooks decided to deploy all sort of cheating tactics and lies just to make a business, knowing that most of the customer will be one time customer, and will not come back again next time.

OK, let me share some very important understanding :

A. FUP – Fair Usage PolicyThis is what I copied and paste from a local Telco’s web site :

This Fair Usage Policy (“Policy”) sets out an acceptable level of conduct between Telco and it’s customer using the Telco Broadband’s Internet service. Telco believes that all Internet users should be responsible in their usage and how it affects other users.

Whilst connection is “always on” for each customer, the available bandwidth is shared by all customers active at a particular point in time. A small portion (about 1%) of customers use a very large portion (about 30%) of bandwidth based on our data and that from other broadband service providers.

In lay man terms, you are sharing the Internet pipe, and you might not get the whole pipe/data plan to yourself alone since you are sharing the pipe!!

Please look out for this term, and you can find it for sure, not very easy to locate because they usually hide this statement as much as they can, but they need to state it, so, look harder.

TESTIMONIALS

Why I am in BNI how BNI helped me&

Recently, one of our Chapter members was on a business trip to Japan. And she needed some contacts urgently. I just used the BNI Connect to link her up with some members in Japan. They helped her to get connected with the business Power Team and she completed her trip smoothly.

Joyce Kee SWBNI Connect Ambassador forKL West RegionUnited Chapter, member since 2010

Our United members regularly update their personal profile on BNI Connect. Just by doing this they get higher visibility because it is so much easier for the

public to search for their businesses and services.

Sometimes even without using the Solution Pack, I have just shown the members’ photos and businesses details to prospects by just clicking the BNI Connect. And I managed to get some excellent referrals for our members through their impressive profiles!

Getting connected in BNI Connect has plenty of conveniences too. The best is of course - being able to link up with all BNI members around the world. Which means you have access to members in more than 50 countries!

Since being part of BNI, my business volume and turnover has increased by 30%. My current list of clientele have moved from normal employees to

business owners, thanks to referrals from BNI.

In addition, through the trainings given by BNI, I have learnt a lot about resource and time management. Heeding advice from the trainings, I have implemented several changes in my company, and it’s starting to produce positive results.

I am keen to spend more time in BNI-related activities as I believe that my company and I can benefit even more in the long term.

TESTIMONIALS

BNI changed my mindset about how to do business, through referrals and relationship. Now I can have more time to design better quality artworks and to meet even more people.

See YauPioneer Chapter,member since 2013

Heard about BNI through a friend of Patrick. Later, Patrick introduced the BNI system to me which I think is a good way to expand my network.

As graphic designing is very common in Ipoh, fresh graduates, freelancers, design agencies, they are all my competitors. Participating in BNI is a very good way as it’s like reserving a piece of the cake in this market by locking out my competitors from this group. It also makes it easier for me to close a deal with clients. Each week’s meeting saves my time from being a blind chicken trying to find worms everywhere.

If being a member of BNI in the first year can help contribute 14% of my total enrollment business turnover, I believe this second year through BNI, my total enrollment of students should reach more than 20%!

Kang WeiPioneer Chapter,member since 2013

I have been operating Children Enrichment Programme for the past 10 years. One of my marketing strategy is to distribute flyers in my surrounding area. Every year, we distribute

at least 30K of flyers to recruit students for the new intake. Imagine spending almost RM2-3K printing and distributing these flyers every year.

After joining BNI Pioneer for a year now, I have not spent a single cent on the distribution of these same flyers. The best part is that just by following the BNI system, I started getting referrals within 4 months and have had Tier 3-4 referrals within a span of 8 months.

Being a second generation business owner, even though working for the last 7 years,

my network of friends is very limited, especially back in my hometown, Ipoh. I looked for ways to know more people, through trade organizations and association dinners, but yielded little results.

But, after joining BNI for one year, I slowly understand the importance of Givers Gain concept, how people are naturally drawn to you by just being a resourceful person. BNI not is just solely about getting referrals or giving referrals, it’s about cultivating long term partnership and trust among members.”

Jeremy ChanPioneer Chapter, member since 2013

I ’m Stephen from Lim Agency. I joined BNI Pioneer Chapter since June 2013. While

attending my first meeting in BNI, I have totally no idea what was going on. Only after the 2nd meeting, I decided to join because I believe BNI can help me build relationship with the members and to expand my agency’s business.

After I joined BNI, the referrals I received from BNI helped me to grow up my business by at least 25%. And within the same year, resulted in my agency achieving the Top 4 Agency spot from Top 5 previously in AIG North Region.

I believe BNI will help all the members to get more referrals easily and strongly recommend other industries to join us as a part of our BNI big family. Thank you to BNI.
