president's podiumDuring the last Executive Meeting the matter ofdistributing our Newsletter via electronic or postal meanswas discussed at length. The consensus was that we staywith the status quo.

I am please to be able to inform you that Mike and Gerihave taken on the role of Area Rep for the Bay of Plenty.The retiring Rep Peter Lyner having put in a sterling efforton behalf of the Bay and the Register is taking a wellearned spell. Peter, I bet you are looking forward to justjoining in on the rides and having fun. Mike and Geri willprovide plenty of that for you and fellow members.

I have just returned home from the North Island Rag Rally,during which we were all able to mark a special milestone- that of Rob Hargreaves 30 years of continuousmembership in the Register. What now Rob? Your 40thwill roll up pretty quickly. Time seems to fly by these days

for us all.

Our venue for the North Island R.A.G Rally Taylors Memorial Lodge at Pokaka I aminformed by the current owners has been sold. The current owners cannot make anycommitments as to costs the new owners may charge. Until we are able to establishcontact with the purchasers our continued use of the Lodge is in doubt. In themeantime I have been able to secure with the current owners a tentative booking forthe weekend of the 28th and 29th March 2015, so until such times as we can beguaranteed the use of the Taylors Memorial Lodge by the purchasers, a plan B will beworked on to ensure we can all share in the fellowship and camaraderie that goes handin hand with the R.A.G. Rally weekend.

The six day tour that took place in March went very well with everybody travelling onroads that they had not travelled before. Two of the six days we experienced light rainfrom time to time and also two of our nights away torrential rain fell throughout thenight. Great times and fun was had by all. New friendships formed. Tours such as thisoffer opportunities for us to see parts of this country that we would not see otherwise.We rode at a leisurely pace and everyone made it home safely. There will be more onthis tour in our next newsletter. When you read the stories and see the pictures foryourself, why not give some thought to planning a tour of your own where membersfrom all over the country can participate. If planning a tour isn't your thing then join atour with fellow motorcyclists and just have fun.

Annual Rally and A.G.M. 2015. Having spent a night at the Rally venue (WanganuiRiver Top 10 Holiday Park 460 Somme Parade Wanganui), I can recommend this venueas a delightful place to stay. Our members are being offered a discount when bookingfor the Rally up until 1st June. To book and secure your discount you need tocontact and speak to Ben or Jeannie on 0800272664 or 063438402 andmention BMWOR when making your Rally bookings. If you go onto their websiteyou will see that all the accommodation is booked for the dates of the 2015 Rally. Thatis because the organisers for the Rally have secured this venue for our use and thisoption runs out on the 1st June. Please make your Rally bookings early. Tent sites andPower sites are also available. Bunk room accommodation is also available for thosewho wish to share with other members.

Introduction:

The BMW Owners Register is an organisation whose members join together for rides tonominated venues and for other social occasions. The organiser nominates thedestination and regrouping stages along the way, but otherwise has no influence uponthe way that riders behave on the road. There is no element of organised competition inthe rides.

Riding Code:

1. All register members on register rides shall do so as individuals responsible for theirown safety and shall take into account the safety of others they encounter on the ride.

2. Register members are responsible for ensuring that their motorcycles are in a safe andlegal condition, the minimum being to Warrant of Fitness standards.

3. Riders, pillions, and sidecar passengers where required, shall have as a minimumStandards New Zealand approved motorcycle helmets, and stout footwear, gloves andclothing that will be capable of protecting their body in the event of a mishap.

4. Register members are to go to the aid of any others suffering a mishap.

5. Ride organisers shall nominate the destination for the ride as well as any regroupinglocations or other stops. The organiser is not responsible for other riders' behaviour orsafety.

6. Riders shall ride at a speed and in a way that is comfortable for them. Do not rideoutside your personal comfort envelope.

7. If a rider is unfamiliar with the route, they shall arrange to follow another rider who doesknow the way and who travels at a comfortable pace.

8. Riders who decide to travel as a group shall adopt a staggered riding formation suchthat there is an accepted following distance to the rider immediately in front. A reasonablefollowing distance is indicated by a time of two seconds between riders for dryconditions, and longer for inclement conditions and on loose surfaces.

9. The Organiser and or the Register are not responsible for participants' safety, and allparticipants participate at their own risk. All participants are aware that they are travellingon open public roads and are responsible for their own safety and compliance with allRoad Rules and Laws.

area reportsnorthlandAfter a bit of a hiatus up here a bunch ofmembers, former members, andprospective members, all with thecommon disease we share, fascinationwith BMW's, met over lunch at Parua BayTavern on Sun 13 April. I had intended totake some pictures to prove the Registeris still alive and kicking in the North, but Iwas so busy trying to attach names tofaces that I never got the pointy-clickyOlympus out of my pocket. Another day,and with the bigger weapon, I will getsome photos.

Parua Bay meals are still delightfullyoversized, and the sun seems to shinewhenever I go there. Now I have seenhow many Bee-em enthusiasts are livingup here I will grab a bigger table nexttime, too.

Special Mention-in Despatches for Snowand Cath Buckton, who had to cagedown from Hikurangi because the bike isin the emergency ward at ExperienceHospital - we all know how painful it iswhen the bike has to go in for surgery. Wehope the patient recovers quickly(cheaply would be good, as well!)

Looking forward to bringingmembers from all reaches of the Bay ofPlenty Area together for a variety ofevents, rides, gastro delights andweekend getaways. Also hoping to hookup with other Areas for rides and events.(Watch your mag for details of the “HOT

August Night” we are hosting thiswinter). Calling for some new ride leadersand ideas. It would also be good tocontinue with the successful pot luckdinners (alternating with dinners out) andwould appreciate any host offers. Lookforward to meeting up soon.

rangitikeiWe normally assemble on the lastTuesday of the month for our BMW ride'n' dine.

This month we were pleased to welcomea great group of local members to theBrick House in Wanganui on aWednesday. We were hosting the SixDays on the Road tourists. To ensure thatthey were able to find their way toWanganui, Barry H and Peer N and I metthem at Eltham. Because the weatherhad captured That Mountain, they hadarrived at the cafe early. We followedthem to Patea via back (sealed) roads.After a photo op at the Canoe in Patea,we went racing. No, I lied!!! We wentaround the Patea Race Track which willbe open for a classic bike racing at thetime of our 2015 Rally, after 60 years inrecess. It is all sealed, but narrow. Then awee diversion around to Block 9 nearWaitotara, a glimpse of Brunswick, andeveryone arrived at Top Ten Holiday Park.

At the dinner, everyone signed a Get WellSoon card for Graeme Flyger who hashas body and bike repaired recently,Barry updated the Rally plan, and Rogerand Liz won the Jam award for being thenewest members.

The tourists went off the next morning,after a comfortable night at the Top Ten.

Speaking on the Top Ten Holiday park... the Six Day tourists have carriedout a test pattern for us. The keymessage is that you should get thatbooking done as soon as possible.

Until 1 June there is a discount. Afterthat date its open slather with thepublic having the same access asBMWOR members.

Back to this month's story.

We next assembled at the Upokongarocafe and headed off to the now fullysealed Whanganui River Road on 5 April.I know ... another exception to oursecond Sunday of the month ridingpattern. But hey! It is Daylight Savingweekend and the RAG was on at Pokaka.Barry H lead us along this iconic road,and then on to Raetihi and lunch atNational Park. Perfect riding weather allday. After lunch some went to check outthe mountain, or headed home. Barry H,Roger A, Neville P and I checked out theRAG. After a chat and cuppa, Neville andI headed back to Wanganui, and Barry &Roger settled in for the evening. As weleft, Barry was helping prepare thepumpkin for the roast dinner.

Our next meal meeting is at Ashhurst onTuesday 29 April, back to normal pattern... almost. It is after daylight savings sowe meet at 7.00 pm. Peter Truter will beour guru in charge. For the May ride(normal pattern (Sunday 11 May) DonCross is taking us to Gravity Canyon nearTaihape. Bungee Jump anyone?Lance Nixon

wellingtonAscent of Takapari Road, Manawatu -Saturday 22 March 2014

This ride - open to all register membersand also promulgated on Kiwibiker andAdventure Rider saw three intrepid GSriders and a Round the World visitor Jonmounted on a Husqvarna set off from BPMelling for the appointed meet up at theAllied Servo in Ashhurst.

At Ashhurst we were joined by two otherregister members aboard anotherHusqvarna and a Wee Strom. Otherriders from the Manawatu and Southern

Hawkes Bay were mounted on an eclecticmix of machines including a HondaDominator, KTM690, DR650 and Howiefrom Wellington on his trusty KLR. Weeven had a dual sport riding pal fromKiwibiker take a look see at us aboard hisSV1000. Even decent enough to rideahead of us and open the first gate as youascend Takapari Road.

The ride up the Pohangina Valley isalways beautiful and this day was noexception. However as we got up into theRuahines we encountered low cloud upon the tops which meant we didn’t getthe hoped for splendid views of theSouthern Hawkes Bay and Manawatu.

All had a lot of fun - great camaraderieand varying degrees of challenge. Myself- I was reminded of the importance ofmaintaining momentum when on severalinstances - having lost momentum thebig GS buried the rear wheel in deeplarge rocky terrain.

For me - making it to the A Frame Shelterand back down again without droppingmy bike was satisfying. Some includingWellington Register members Selwyn Mand Paul D took their 1150 and 800 GSeson beyond the A Frame where the terrainbecame even more challenging.

The Dawn Chorus (Ngaheranga Campsite - PureoraForest, Central North Island), Rag Rally - TaylorMemorial Lodge - Pohaka, Fisher’s Track and 42ndTraverse - 4 - 6 April 2014

The first two of these events were Register rides - theRAG being an all time favourite of mine. The off roadrides were organised by Register member Neil W ofNational Park - convener of a popular riding group called“Back Roads Riders”.

Wellington member Selwyn M and I treated the PureoraForest ride as a ‘ride in’ agreeing to make our own wayvia roads less travelled meeting up with Tibsy, Dave M(Convener of this event) and my fellow area coordinatorfrom the Bay - ‘Wutsy’ at the campsite.

Selwyn and I had a leisurely ride up State Highway 2from Bulls taking in some gravel from Fordell which sawus bypass Wanganui. The Whanganui river road wassimply sublime - beautiful ‘twisties’, the river like glass,wonderful autumn colours - just have to watch out foron coming traffic as this road is narrow.

Late lunch was at the Angel Louise Cafe in Raetehi -great coffee and pleasant service.

We journeyed on the Taumaranui where provisions werepurchased at the Supermarket and a coffee top up hadat Maccas. We travelled to Pureroa Forest and ourcampsite via the little hamlet of Bennydale reaching thecampsite within 15 minutes of our fellow campers whowere just putting the finishing touches to erecting theirtents - or in the case of ‘Commando Tibsy’ erectingtheir ‘open plan’ fly sheet for the night!

A pleasant evening was had - shooting the breeze andhaving a wine. The dawn chorus was not all Dave M hadhoped for but the starlight night the amazing dawn -along with what birdsong there was - satisfied thiscamper.

Saturday morning saw us break camp - with Tibsy,Wutsy and Dave M travelling to the RAG throughBennydale and Taumarauni with Selwyn and I taking theLink Road which took us through the forest to thelocation of the Centre of the North Island.

For me this Link Road was among the highlights interms of riding - lovely sweeping gravel!

Eventually, after a minor navigational error on my part -still to master my GPS - we made it to Turangi for coffeeand more provisions before journeying on past theChateau turn off to Taylor Memorial.

The RAG had its usual happy mellow vibe. Great toconnect with regular attendees again and meet somefolks I’d only know through their on line persona. Greatto meet you Triumph racing ‘TrustMe’ of AdventureRider community!

Sunday saw Selwyn and I break camp in a leisurelyfashion and head North to National Park to rendezvouswith other riders who’d arranged to ride the Fisher’sTrack and the 42nd Traverse. I’d done both these trackspreviously - and whilst great - I find a large GS a handfulso had elected to ride my DR650 for this trip. Certainlyglad I did - especially for the 42nd Traverse which wedid from Owhango to Kapoors Road - this way entailsscaling a substantial rock face which several of us foundchallenging. Those among us who like Selwyn were onlarge machines - Africa Twins, VeeStrom (not a Wee)and a GS Adventure (Selwyn) have my huge respect!

Riding home from National Park down through the Paraparas wewere to the most awesome early evening light and awesomecolours.A great weekend - and one I feel really fortunate to have beenable to do - I’m sated till the next one.Stephen Oatley.

NelsonThis overnighter was to be held afortnight ago when the weatherforecasters were threatening with themother of all storms called Lusi that wasgoing to have devastating effects in thewest coast. But as it happened Lusi wasonly a loose term and it came to nothing.

So back to the ride report, we met atThree Brother Corner (which is actually abig roundabout just outside of Richmond)at nine o’clock. There were 11 riders,three with pillions. After a short brief weheaded towards Murchison and pickingup Peter from Marlborough at theKawatiri Junction. One of the riders onlycame for a short ride as he hadfundraising to do at the local fire station.The rest of carried on our journey.

We had morning tea at Murchison andthen off to Reefton for lunch via theSprings Junction.

The dust munchers head over the MaruiaSaddle, a favourite scenic route.

The road from Springs Junction toReefton would be one of the best roadsfor motorcycling.

Now a couple of interesting andnoteworthy things happened at Reefton.

First one relates the same couple whowere mentioned in my last month’s reportwhere one of the riders left his pillionbehind and had to go back to find her.

Well, this time it was the same pillion thatwas spotted in the “men’s” toilets. Shehas wondered in without looking at thesigns. I think we should have a prize ofsome description for these types ofevents.

Second event that took place was that Imet up with old friends of ours who weresupposed to be living in Beijing. Theyhave only recently returned to NZ and areliving in Blenheim of all places. What a

big world we live in and yet so small whenit comes to co-incidences.

After Reefton we headed towardsCharleston via the Pike River miningdisaster memorial. Very peaceful andserene location set by the riverside. If anyof the readers are in this neck of thewoods, make appoint of visiting thismemorial.

We rode through the sleepy hollow ofTaylorville and onto Punakaiki and

eventually to Charleston, our destinationfor the night.

We stayed at the camping grounds atCharleston, once all of us got there wehad a small meeting to sort out dinnerand decided to go for a pizza about 4towards Westport. What an amazing setup in the middle of nowhere and fantasticpizzas. We were warned that they couldhandle only 4 pizzas at a time and wemay have to wait for all of us to be served.But, all things considered we had nomeetings to attend, no trains to catch, itwas a warm night with no sand flies (amiracle on the coast), so we waited and itwas worth it.

After the pizzas we headed back to thecamp and sat in the kitchen and had a

few vinos/cups of tea, talked a lot aboutnothing, except someone brought up thematter about the president of theBMWOR is looking for a vice presidentfrom the South Island. All in unisonmentioned that Nigel, our trustedphotographer should put his hand up. Towhich Nigel replied quick as a flash thathe could not even contemplate theposition as just two days earlier he hasturned to the faith of Mormons and couldnot be on any committee or be in thepublic eye. So, that was the end of thatand soon after we all headed to bed.

Next morning was even more amazing asthe sun was up, it was warm, no wind.Most of us had a light breakfast as wehad planned to have breakfast at CapeFowlwind Café. We got to the café a bit

early as they did not open till 10.30 am,but again the wait was worth it.

After we headed homewards via theBuller Gorge to Murchison and home toNelson.

Each and every one thought that this wasprobably the best ride we’ve had. Therewere several reasons, nice roads, littletraffic, no caravans or camper vans,unpredictability of the west coast and itspeople, company of the fellow riders andso on and on and on.

If you haven’t travelled these roads do sosoon.

The last two organized rides of theseason down here in Otago/Southlandhave involved decent weather and betterlunches. At the end of March a groupassembled on a balmy seaside day atKaka point, as evidenced by thephoto below. Note cunning use ofunsuspecting Suzuki to quarantinenicely polished BMWs from arearep's unwashed example (there's arumour starting that I own a yellowGS, but I'm pretty sure the regopapers say otherwise). Two weekslater the sun again shone for ourautumn colours ride to Lawrence(but the chilly wind meant I wasinside drinking coffee when theeditor would have preferred me tobe outside taking a photograph).

The secret of gambling with theweather is to know when to quit.The house always wins in the end,winter approaches, and we've hada good run. On that basis,organised rides down here are on

hold until spring. Keep an eye on emailfor possible "looks good for tomorrow,I'm heading to xxx" suggestions, but nopromises as they'll rely on my opportunitycoinciding with favorable conditions.Except of course the Brass Monkey. The

date is set, adversity is part of the appeal.maybe see you there.

Prelude to; and the RAGWords/Picture: Dave Morris

The prelude is a story of many twistsand turns.

‘Way back, maybe a year, and as a resultof lending Bruce & Virginia a couple ofbooks on Identification of Australian birdsand also Pacific Islands birds, I asked thequestion, “Have you heard the dawnchorus?”

“No.” was the reply.

“You’ve got to do it sometime.” I said.From there we discussed and talkedabout a date. Finally, I said what aboutthe Friday before RAG Rally? Settled. Itdid seem a while before that date camearound, but eventually it did. Juxtaposed,our area co-ordinator at a meetingencouraged us [members] to get out andparticipate and suggest ride ideas, so Iopened the ride to others.

After some phone conversations and to-ing and fro-ing of e-mails with members,and Area Co-Ord. had posted the eventon the web site, we had a number. Butthen, on the eleventh hour, (well, perhaps10.30pm) Bruce rung me and said he hadpulled a ham string. But he would seehow he was on the Thursday night andlet me know. He did. “Can’t do it, sorry.”

Well, I went on my way - solo, andStephen and Selwyn did all the gravelroads they could find, and Pres Peterjoined John at Napier, eventually to meetme in Taupo at the Aircraft and theGolden Arches. What easier land markcould you use? (Yes, no: It did work!)

Peter suggested lunch at the MangakinoHui Hut cafe. (I didn't know either, thanksGoogle, looks interesting. Ed.) So, lastminute purchases and fuel top up atTaupo and we mosie on to Mangakino.The café was a good one; reason enoughto visit the town, and divine service by thelovely Jade. Then onto the road (SH 31)and down to Pureora Forest Park and theNgaherenga camp site. There arecamping bays, toilet and fresh water tapand BBQ and tables only at this location.More than enough for our one night stop.In true ‘OR fashion, we pitch our tentswhere we choose, and throw the boyscout/military tidiness on the camp fire. -Five riders, 5 bikes and a quintet of tents.After we were settled in, we enjoyed ourcompany over some wine. This was theeve of the daylight saving. The evening

sky was a star spotter’s delight with acloudless canopy, and a waxing crescentmoon. We seemed so insignificant in thisuniverse.

For me, the chorus was disappointingcompared to my first visit. However, theothers enjoyed it, so that made itworthwhile.

Morning sees heavy dew and some lowlying fog. But after a leisurely pitch &pack-up the fog had lifted and Peter leadthe way down to Taumaranui. AfterBenneydale, he turned left and took usthrough the settlements of Waimiha andOngarue. Make the effort to do thatdetour, sometime. It’s a sealed road.

Breakfast at Jasmines Cafe & ThaiRestaurant in the main street ofTaumaranui and refuel. It was then wesaw a huge group of non patched HD’s

(maybe 20 +) and another group of V-Stroms numbering some 10 in number.Both quite a sight.

Raurimu, National Park, Erua, Makatoteviaduct; towns and villages go flying by.Flying by, flying by. Com’on bike, get thelead out. (Oops, sorry, Bit of Elvis there –get a grip!)

We make Pokaka in good time. ButWanganui Paul is still there before us!(Me-thinks he sleeps the night in Raetahi– some 20 k’s south of Pokaka.)

Rag Rally was up to the standard ofconviviality we have come to expect.Good food, good wine (beer) and greatcompany. Some still elect to camp it: just3 tents this year! Yes numbers decreasewith the passing years; reminds me ofRSA membership!

Our beautiful weather has continued too.(In fact is does until everybody is safe athome.)

After the meal, the round of thanks toChef Cliff and the people who help in thefood preparation Is announced, and Irepeat it here to put it on record. TheTrust who own the lodge expect thehirers to clean up and leave it the way itwas found, and I am sure we do do that.

Long live the RAG Rally.

Albeit, perhaps in a different place. Thismay have been our last Taylor Memorialbooking as the place is on the market.Who knows what new owners might dowith groups that book. We will know –one way or another – when next year’sRAG will be advertised in our newsletter.

Last year Mike Hyde published his latestbook ‘Twisting Throttle New Zealand’, AKiwi’s guide to the top 50 motorcyclerides in the land of the long white cloud”.Mike, who lives in Christchurch, is wellknown for his previous rather amusingTwisting Throttle books on long distanceriding around Australia and America. Inthe New Zealand book quite a number ofhis top rides are within a day’s trip of theRangitikei region so we organized our 9March outing to see if we agreed with hisreview of Chapter 20 ‘Route 52’.

Route 52 itself is 200km of very scenicand winding hill country roads thatstretches from Wiapukurau down theeast coast to Masterton. 12 of us on 10bikes left Palmerston North at 9.00ameach armed with a copy of Chapter 20.Interestingly a show of hands during thepre-ride brief didn’t reveal anyone whohad done the whole of Route 52 in oneday although most had done at leastsections of it. As riding the full road is areasonable effort in itself we took thedirect route up to Waipukurau viaHighway 2 rather than using themeandering back roads to get there. Itwas a great start to the day with not acloud in the sky and not even any trafficto hold us up going through theManawatu Gorge.

Waipukurau was a quick fuel stop beforestarting on the sweeping 50km of bendsacross to Porangahau. This was ourmorning tea stop at the very nice historicpub there. New Zealand’s longest placename is just down the road so we gotFiona, the Maori publican who grew up inthe area, to give us the properpronunciation and meaning ofTaumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu. ‘Taumata’ (asshortened by the locals) means “Thehilltop where Tamatea with big knees,conqueror of mountains, eater of land,traveller over land and sea, played hisnose-flute to his beloved”. You’ll also behappy to know the word beats Australia’spoor effort ofMamungkukumpurangkuntjunya by awhole 31 letters and translates betterthan theirs which simply means “Wherethe devil urinates”.

After coffee we took the 5 minute detouracross to the local East Coast beachwhich was looking almost like a holidayresort on the sunny day that it was. Wehad a short stop there for a couple ofphotos of the beach then back-tracked toPorangahau and on toTaumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu for theobligatory bikes-in-front-of-big-thingsphoto opportunity.

From there the road starts to tighten upand it’s non stop cornering for about

60km down to Pongaroa for our lunchstop. This section of road has sufferedsignificantly from the 20 Jan Eketahunaearthquake. There were quite few asections of road works and a few‘surprises’ at the slumped sections.Fortunately most of these had beenmarked with white paint. The roaddoesn’t get a lot of traffic so the odd straysheep and oncoming car cutting thecorners was all par for the course.

According to Twisting Throttle atPongaroa we are required to a) samplethe banana thickshakes at the tearooms,b) pop a wheelie for any excited local kidsand c) pay homage at the memorial stoneto local lad and Nobel Prize-winningphysicist Maurice Wilkins. We achievedone out of three as the tearooms wereclosed so no banana milkshakes andbeing a Sunday there weren’t a whole lotof school kids around. The memorial toWilkins was interesting and resembledsomething between three stackeddonuts and a DNA molecule!

After a very nice pub lunch the groupdivided in two with Barry, Roger, Peter&Ann, Lance and Barry & Barbara takingthe direct route back to Pahiatua whileRobert, Mark1, Mark2, Shane and Rob Gcontinued along the remaining bends ofRoute 52 down to Masterton. Theshortcut road from Pongaroa out toPahiatua is very scenic in itself and thebends going that way open out to create

some great sweeping curves which allowfor the gas to be turned up a bit.

Those of us who continued on down toMasterton had 100km of reasonably tightbends but a good road surface with nottoo much remaining earthquake damage.The further south we got the faster theroad became with the scenery changingbetween hill country grazing and prettyriver gullys. By the time we got toMasterton the Ducati and the Suzuki 650were getting way low on juice so thegroup stuck pretty close together just incase one of us had to run a mercymission to the Masterton petrol stationand back.

So I think we all agreed that Chapter 20of Twisting Throttle does meet thecriteria of being one of this country’s top50 rides. With the added distance ofcompleting a loop from Palmerston North(or Wanganui for some on the day) itmade a great day’s outing.

Last year I was asked if I would be RallyMaster for the 2014 North Island start ofthe TT 2000 rally. This event is a 48-hour,2,000 kilometre challenge for riders to doa reasonable distance in the saddle overa weekend within strictly enforced safetyguidelines. The event started in 2009 anduntil this year was held entirely in theSouth Island. In 2014 to add anotherdimension to the ride it had concurrentstarts in both Woodbourne for SouthIslanders and Bunnythorpe for the NorthIsland contingent.

At exactly 6:00pm on Friday 21 Feb theguns went off and participants had until6:00pm on the Sunday to ride 2,000kmand collect 35,000 points from theirchoice of designated checkpoints spreadacross the lower North Island and upperSouth Island. Riders obtained therequired points by photographing theirbike and the years’ issued T-shirt in frontof the checkpoints that they hadpreviously chosen. This year in the NorthIsland there were 30 checkpointstotalling 30,000 points and 60checkpoints worth 60,000 points spreadacross the top of the South Island.Checkpoints had values of between 400and 5,000 points allocated to them withthose that were harder to get to or at theend of long no-exit roads being awardedmore points.

On the safety side, riding 2,000km in 48hours is challenging but not dangerousand the event does not give anyadvantage to riders who travel furtherthan this nor gather more than the35,000 points. Also to prevent itbecoming a race there is no advantage ingetting to the finish line in Christchurch

before 6:00pm on the Sunday. Basicallythe event is a ‘finish-and-got-the-certificate-to-prove-it’ or ‘DNF’ with nohierarchy of placing’s that might putpressure on the more competitive ridersto push the boundaries. Although the aimis to complete the event in 48 hours, as aresult of police recommendation, riderscan invoke a 4-hour ‘buffer’ and still beconsidered a finisher in the event ofpunctures and other misfortunes alongthe way. In the weeks leading up to theevent I met with the Palmerston NorthPolice to let them know of the event thatwas coming up in their region and what itwas all about as well as going throughthe safety procedures we had in place.They were very supportive and sent ayoung constable to join us at the start tochat and show some solidarity.

Part of the attraction of the event is in theindividual planning required by ridersleading up to it. Most strategized to comeup with a route that most efficientlyachieves their 2,000km plus 35,000points and takes them to parts of thecountry they may otherwise not have anexcuse to visit. Those on road bikescould stay entirely on the seal whereasthose who don’t mind a bit of gravelcould go to the higher scoringcheckpoints in places like Mount Whitein the central SI.

I didn’t compete in the event itself afterstarting the Bunnythorpe riders butopted to ride down to Christchurch forthe finish where I ‘crewed’ the computerand download photos as the participantscame in. We had over 40 riders starting atBunnythorpe and 60 taking off at thesame time from Woodbourne. The

Motorcycle Marshalls RequiredLater this year, in various parts of the South Island, BikeNZ will be running the'Benchmark Homes Elite Series' of cycle races. BikeNZ have been so impressed withthe skill and professionalism displayed by our members and friends in undertakingmotorcycle marshalling duties for the past three NZ Cycle Classic Tours held in theManawatu that they have now asked if any BMWOR members would be interested inbeing involved in this SI series.

You will be asked to maintain a rolling roadclosure ahead of the race, working in conjunction with race officials and possibly thePolice. At times you may be required to negotiate through the race peleton andsupport vehicles.

This is a fantastic and fun way to develop and enhance your riding skills, just ask anyof the marshalls that took part in the NZ Cycle Classic.

You will not be required to carry cameramen or pillion (unless you volunteer that is!).

atmosphere and joviality was really greatwith quite few who had done all of the TT2000’s to date and even a group who hadcome across from Australia for it.

As I wasn’t a participant and didn’t needto be collecting checkpoints on theFriday evening, I rode down to Wellingtonon the Saturday morning and caught theearly morning ferry across. On thecrossing I met up with a number ofcompetitors who had been spendingvarying chunks of the previous nightvisiting checkpoints around the lowerNorth Island. Through Saturday andSunday I did a leisurely ride toChristchurch via the most scenic route. Ichose to go across to Nelson then theBuller Gorge, Greymouth (night stop),Arthurs Pass and around BanksPeninsular including Akaroa. At thevarious stops along the way I met up witha number of TT2000 participants. Theywere easy to spot as they generally hadthe event T-shirt strapped to their bike inan easily photographed position whilstconsulting various electronic and paper-based maps with confused expressionson their faces.

I got into Christchurch on the Sundayafternoon with plenty of time to meet therest of the crew and set up behind thecomputer before the first of the ridersstarted to come in.

As the evening progressed and ridersturned up, plenty of tales were told ofremote checkpoints visited andchallenges overcome along the way. Theconsensus was that this was thetoughest TT2000 to date with somepretty gnarly checkpoints for those whowanted to stretch themselves. It wasn’thelped by a severe hail storm and minitornado which took the roof off a house inAshburton house right on finishing time.There were a few who took shelter or forother reasons invoked the four-hourbuffer to come in by 10:00pm. Therewere also a few DNF’s for various reasonsbut nothing too major.

On the Monday, Mike Hyde the eventorganiser and I rode up to Kaikoura viaCulverden and the inland route. Fromthere we parted company and I headedup to Picton where I caught up with anumber of other returning riders on theferry. What is the purpose of Safer Journeysfor Motorcycling on New ZealandRoads?

Safer Journeys for Motorcycling on NewZealand Roads is a guide which has beendeveloped to provide road controllingauthorities, practitioners and policymakers with best practice advice to helpidentify, target and address key roadsafety issues on high-risk motorcycleroutes. It includes a range ofcountermeasures to assist roaddesigners and engineers in developingappropriate best practice treatments toaddress road sections that are high-riskfor motorcyclists.

What prompted the development ofthe guide?

The guide came about because of thesignificant safety risks associated withmotorcycling and the disproportionatenumber of fatal and serious injury crashesinvolving motorcycles.

The NZTA and the Road ControllingAuthority Forum (RCA Forum) jointlydeveloped the guide to improve roadsafety for motorcyclists.

The guide is a response to thegovernment’s Safer Journeys road safetystrategy, which identifies motorcyclingsafety as an area of high concern. Theguide is one of many motorcycling safetyinitiatives being carried out by the NZTA.

What is a ‘high-risk’ motorcycleroute?

A ‘high-risk route’ is a road, or section ofroad, that contains a disproportionatenumber of motorcycle crashes. In otherwords, they are areas of roads with acluster of motorcycle crashes. The guideincludes a methodology for identifyinghigh-risk motorcycling routes and a list ofthe routes in New Zealand that representthe highest risk.

How does this guide relate to the SafeSystem approach?

The Safe System represents a shift fromthe traditional approach to road safety inthat it acknowledges that people makeand always will make mistakes in theiruse of the roads, and that the humanbody has a limited ability to withstandcrash forces.

Given that mistakes are inevitable, the

road system should protect people fromdeath and serious injury by focusing onthe following areas:

• Safe roads and roadsides

• Safe speeds

• Safe vehicles

• Safe road use.

The guide primarily focuses on saferoads and roadsides, but recognises thatthis is only one of the four elements ofthe Safe System approach, and that it isalso critical to address safe speeds, safevehicles and safe road use in order toimprove safety for motorcyclists. Theguide outlines the issues associated witheach of these elements and identifiespossible treatments to address them.

What has informed the developmentof the guide?

The guide has been informed by:

• Engagement with keystakeholders and sector partners such asmotorcycle user groups, MOTO NZ, localand district councils, road controllingauthorities, and ACC.

• Consultation with internationalexperts, including representatives fromVictoria, Australia, who have developedand implemented a similar safety project.

• Results of pilot projects,including the rural initiative in theThames-Coromandel region.

• A literature review of bestpractices from around the world.

Who contributed to the guide?

The guide went through a draftconsultation stage, which involvedengagement with the public and inputfrom motorcycle user groups, MotorcycleSafety Advisory Council (MSAC), roadcontrolling authorities, and the AccidentCompensation Corporation (ACC). Allstakeholder groups actively engaged inthe development of the guide.

How does the guide benefit localauthorities?

The guide focuses on road maintenanceand construction practices that have thepotential to improve the safety ofmotorcycling routes. The guide alsoprovides local authorities with:

• details of a Safe Systemapproach for motorcycling, including saferoads and roadsides, safe speeds, saferoad use and safe vehicles

• information about key crashissues for motorcyclists

• tools to help identify andanalyse high-risk motorcycle routes andmotorcycling safety issues

• a range of countermeasures forkey crash types occurring in rural andurban environments, to help developbest-value remedial treatments

• guidance for developing,prioritising and funding road safetyinfrastructure and speed managementprogrammes

• reference to further tools andresources to evaluate implementedcountermeasures

• national consistency regardingthe identification of motorcycle routesand the application of provencountermeasures.

Do you plan to make changes to theguide over time?

Yes. The guide is a living documentwhich will be revised over time to ensurethe information remains accurate and up-to-date. For example, once amethodology for identifying high-riskurban motorcycling routes and safetytreatments in an urban environment isdeveloped, it will be added to the guide.

BMW plant Berlin manufactures 500,000th BMW GS motorcycle with boxer engine. Thursday, March 20, 2014 Munich/Berlin.Today the 500,000th BMW motorcycle of the flat-twin-engined GS model series came off the production line - a R 1200 GS. Since1969 motorcycles have been manufactured for the world market in Berlin-Spandau and since 1980 the BMW Motorrad GS modelswith boxer engine, too. Motorcycles which inspire the urge for adventure travel and even to go on expeditions to the remotestcorners of the earth.

In the autumn of 1980, BMW Motorrad presented the R 80 G/S, a machine which combined the qualities for two very special fieldsof use: Offroad and street. What began with 798 cc of displacement and 50 bhp of output has developed into a fascinating high-tech travel enduro in the shape of the R 1200 GS with 125 bhp and 1170 cc over a period of three decades. Furthermore state-of-the art suspension technology and electronic regulation systems such ABS, traction control or semi-active suspension have beenadded. This ongoing and above all consistent development of the boxer-engined BMW GS models is a major reason for their statusas top-selling travel enduros worldwide.
