The BMC Software PATROL Agent must be instal led, and i ts vers ion should be at least 3 .4 .11.

Depending on the under lying hardware components , a specif ic hardware agent is required on the managed system:

Platform Required hardware agent

DELL PowerEdge Dell OpenManage Server Administrator

Fujitsu-Siemens PRIMERGY Fujitsu-Siemens Serverview Agent

HP (Compaq) ProLiant HP Insight Management Agent

HP Integrity HP Insight Management Agent

HP SuperDome (Itanium-based) HP Insight Management Agent

11

Depending on implemented hardware RAID control lers , the fo l lowing addi t ional hardware agents may be required as wel l :

RAID controller Required hardware agent

Adaptec DPT-based RAID controllers Adaptec Storage Manager

Adaptec AAC-based RAID controllers Adaptec Storage Manager Browser Edition

LSI Logic MegaRAID controllers LS I Log ic PowerConso le

LSI Logic/Mylex RAID controllers Mylex GAM Server

3.2 - Requirements for console systems

The minimum vers ion suppor ted of the BMC Software PATROL Console is 3 .4.11.

Other console components (Console Server , PATROL Central , e tc . ) need to be updated with the la test avai lable version on the BMC Software FTP si te .

Page 12: BMC Performance Manager for Hardware Installation Guide

12

4 - Migrating from previous versions of Hardware Sentry

4.1 - On PATROL Agents

Only one version of Hardware Sentry can be instal led on a PATROL Agent, therefore, a previous instal la t ion of Hardware Sentry wil l be overwri t ten by the la test vers ion.

No specif ic migrat ion operat ion is required (you do not need to uninsta l l the previous vers ion of Hardware Sentry f irs t ) . Upon s tar tup, Hardware Sentry wil l take the necessary act ion to complete the migrat ion (migrat ing conf igurat ion var iables i f needed) .

4.2 - On PATROL Consoles (Classic)

Just as for PATROL Agents , only one version of Hardware Sentry can be instal led on a PATROL Console (Class ic) . Logical ly , th is could cause problems if a PATROL Console is connected several PATROL Agents with d ifferent vers ions of Hardware Sentry.

However , with th is la tes t vers ion of Hardware Sentry on the PATROL Console , you wil l be able to connect to Agents with previous versions of Hardware Sentry seamlessly. All you need to ensure is that the PATROL Console has a more recent vers ion than that on the PATROL Agents .

In any case, i t is essential to update the console prof i les to include the new Hardware Sentry classes . To do th is :

Load MS_HARDWARE_SENTRY1.kml f i le in the PATROL Console

This wil l add the two new connector-re la ted classes. If you do not load the new classes in the console , Hardware Sentry wil l not work properly, that is , you wil l not be aware when a hardware agent used by Hardware Sentry has fai led.

Warning!

- Avoid the use of the “Developer” connect ion type in the PATROL Console . - Never use the “Commit KMs” feature of the PATROL Console , especial ly when you

deal with several vers ions of the same KM in your environment .

4.3 - On Console Server, PATROL Central – Web Edit ion

As Console Server and PATROL Central can manage several vers ions of the same KM, you can instal l Hardware Sentry 1 .3.00, 1 .2 .00 and 1.1.00 s ide-by-side on the same Console Server . Console Server automatical ly uses the appropr ia te vers ion of the KM depending on what is running on the d isplayed agent.

However , i t i s s t i l l essent ia l to update the console prof i les to include the new Hardware Sentry c lasses. To achieve th is :

Load the MS_HARDWARE_SENTRY1.kml f i le in the prof i le .

This wil l add the two new connector-re la ted classes. If you do not load the new classes in the prof i le , Hardware Sentry wil l work almost properly except that the prof i le wil l not be aware when a hardware agent used by Hardware Sentry has fa i led.

Section II - Setting-up Appropriate Hardware

Agents Most of the t ime, Hardware Sentry requires a th ird-par ty hardware agent to col lect information from the monitored computer . Each manufacturer develops i ts own agent which is typical ly avai lable for f ree and can be found on the CD-ROM provided with the server or on the manufacturer’s web s i te .

Unless mentioned otherwise , the manufacturer’s agent must be ins ta l led on the monitored server for a proper funct ioning Hardware Sentry KM for PATROL to funct ion proper ly.

This sect ion gives detai ls about the instal la t ion of appropr iate hardware agents for each platform before instal l ing Hardware Sentry. Please fo l low the given instruct ions careful ly.

14 - On AMD Opteron-based Sun® computers running Linux or Sun Solaris®

14.1 - Gett ing ipmitool and lsiuti l

As for i ts SPARC-based servers , Sun does not provide so-cal led "hardware agents" for i ts AMD Opteron-based servers (Sun Fire v20z, v40z, e tc . ) . However , a couple of 3 r d -par ty u t i l i t ies wil l help in monitor ing the hardware components of these servers .

Sun 's AMD Opteron-based servers use the IPMI technology. Hardware Sentry is able to work with the ipmitool u t i l i ty in order to gather the environment information ( temperatures , fans and vol tages) .

Sun provides i ts own versions of the OpenIPMI driver for Linux and the ipmitool u t i l i ty for Linux and Solar is .

For servers including LSI c1030 disk control lers, Hardware Sentry needs the ls iut i l u t i l i ty to monitor the d isks. This u t i l i ty is provided by LSI Logic on their web s i te : h t tp : / /www.ls i logic .com/suppor t /sun/. The ls iu t i l must be insta l led in a d irectory of the PATH environment var iable .

14.2 - Configuring Hardware Sentry on Sun AMD Opteron-based computers

During instal la t ion, p lease ensure that the fo l lowing cr i ter ia are met:

- Motherboard Monitor requires instal la t ion of the MBM IO system dr iver on your computer . I f you’re instal l ing Motherboard Monitor for the f irs t t ime, careful ly read the information displayed and select the recommended set t ing for your computer .

Note: Motherboard Monitor only supports Windows. The equivalent tool on Linux is “lmsensor” but Hardware Sentry does not support i t as yet .

15.3 - Configuring Hardware Sentry on unbranded PCs

Upon star tup, Hardware Sentry automatical ly detects i t is running on a computer which runs a Motherboard Monitor . Please note that Motherboard Monitor has to be running at a l l t imes for a proper monitor ing of the computer .

I f successful ly instal led, the fo l lowing connectors should be “detected” by Hardware Sentry:

- Motherboard Monitor - WBEM on Windows (Physical d isks) - WBEM on Windows (Network adapters)

16 - Special note about SNMP on Windows Server 2003 Many manufacturer-provided hardware agents use the SNMP technology (DELL OpenManage, HP Ins ight Management , Fuj i tsu-Siemens Serverview and for example) .

Star t ing with Windows Server 2003, the SNMP service is not conf igured to al low the “public” community by defaul t . As a consequence, even if the SNMP service is proper ly ins ta l led and the hardware agent proper ly running, Hardware Sentry is not able to gather any hardware information f rom the SNMP agent .

Therefore, on Windows Server 2003 computers that run an SNMP-based hardware agent (DELL OpenManage, HP Ins ight Management or Fuj i tsu-Siemens Serverview), you f irs t need to instal l the SNMP service (not instal led by defaul t) and then configure i t to a l low a community to access the SNMP agent.

In the Services administra t ive tool , [r ight-cl ick] on the SNMP service > [Propert ies] . Cl ick on the [Secur i ty] tab:

Cl ick on the [Add] button and enter a community name that wil l be a l lowed to access the SNMP agent (READ ONLY):

Cl ick [OK]. The new set t ings are taken in to account immediately.

Hardware Sentry wil l automatically detect the community s tr ing that you entered in the securi ty set t ings of the SNMP service.

17 - Special note about IPMI

17.1 - What’s IPMI?

IPMI is a new hardware ins trumentat ion technology developed by Intel®. IPMI’s goal is to s tandardize the way the manufacturers provide hardware heal th information on their servers . I t is in tended to replace the manufacturers’ specif ic technologies that used to be implemented to re tr ieve information l ike temperatures, vol tages, fan speeds, e tc .

17.2 - In-band and out-of-band monitoring

IPMI’s implementat ion consis ts of a Baseboard Management Chip (BMC) insta l led in the server as wel l as a protocol to communicate with this chip. IPMI’s specif icat ion al lows communicating with the BMC either through i ts dedicated LAN interface (out-of-band monitor ing) or by using in ternal system buses through a dr iver ( in-band monitor ing) .

Current ly, Hardware Sentry only provides suppor t for in-band monitor ing with IPMI ( that is : Hardware Sentry and the PATROL Agent are ins ta l led local ly on the managed server and communicates with the local BMC).

17.3 - IPMI implementations

The in-band IPMI communicat ion protocol is being implemented as a dr iver by var ious vendors in d ifferent ways:

- Dell provides i ts own IPMI dr iver for Windows and Linux - IBM provides the OSA implementation - OpenIPMI is an open-source IPMI dr iver for Linux - Sun provides a customized vers ion of the OpenIPMI dr iver for Linux and Solar is 10 - HP provides i ts own IPMI driver for Windows, Linux and HP-UX - In tel provides an IPMI dr iver for Windows 2000 - Microsof t provides an IPMI dr iver with Windows Server 2003 R2

Unfor tunately, these d ifferent implementat ions are most of ten not compat ible wi th each other and each server manufacturer and OS vendor only supports one implementat ion.

I f you plan to monitor the hardware of an IPMI-enabled server with Hardware Sentry, you must careful ly check which driver needs to be instal led on th is server model. Deciding which IPMI dr iver to instal l depends on the manufacturer and model of the server as well as the operat ing system and i ts vers ion. Instal l ing an inappropr iate or outdated IPMI dr iver can lead to severe problems, including server crashes.

17.4 - IPMI-enabled servers

Servers that are IPMI-enabled notably include:

- Dell PowerEdge “8” ser ies (1850, 2850, 6850, e tc . ) - IBM xSer ies “6” ser ies (x306, x346, x366, etc . ) - HP I tanium-based servers (rx2600, rx4600, In tegr i ty and SuperDome) - Sun AMD Opteron-based servers (Sun Fire v20z, v40z, e tc . )

17.5 - Support for IPMI in Hardware Sentry

To monitor Del l , HP and IBM IPMI-enabled servers , Hardware Sentry s t i l l re l ies on their corresponding hardware agents (Dell OpenManage, HP Insight Management and IBM Director) . These agents communicate with the BMC through their own IPMI dr iver . In these cases, the IPMI technology is handled by the hardware agent, and not by Hardware Sentry i tse lf .

For o ther IPMI-enabled servers running Linux or Solar is ( including Sun AMD Opteron-based servers) , Hardware Sentry uses the ipmitool u t i l i ty. Ipmitool is an Open Source u t i l i ty for Linux (and Solar is) that works with the OpenIPMI dr iver .

Ipmitool is avai lable a t : h t tp : / / ipmitool .sourceforge.net / .

The OpenIPMI driver is avai lable a t : h t tp : / /openipmi.sourceforge.net / .

As soon as Hardware Sentry detects ipmitool in the environment path ($PATH), i t t r ies us ing i t to gather hardware information.

Please note that the ipmitool requires root pr iv i leges and therefore requires that you configure Hardware Sentry to e i ther execute commands as root , or use the “sudo” ut i l i ty to execute the ipmitool command. This can be conf igured in the Securi ty Set t ings of Hardware Sentry (see User Guide for more information about Hardware Sentry options) .

Warning! In order to monitor Sun AMD Opteron-based servers (Sun Fire v20z, v40z, etc .) , Hardware Sentry uses ipmitool. However you must not use the standard version of ipmitool and the OpenIPMI driver. Please use the customized version of ipmitool and the OpenIPMI driver provided by Sun. Check Sun’s support s ite to get the most recent version of ipmitool and the OpenIPMI driver for your server model .
