AGRICULTURE

GHS Year 9 Agriculture student, Jackson Boyd, gained Reserve Champion at the RAS Easter Show in

the Fruit & Vegetable judging competition Some fabulous results at this year’s RAS Easter Show were obtained by our agriculture students and their exhibits. In the Fruit & Vegetable judging section, Jackson Boyd was successful in gaining Reserve Champion after commenting on three different types of fruit and vegetables in front of the panel of judges. In the Poultry section, GHS recorded some outstanding results both with eggs and fowls, picking up the Champion School Egg Plate with a dozen Silver Spangled Hamburgh eggs whilst our Year 9 Ag class claimed Champion School Project with their combined entry in the Pure Bred Fowl class. This was part of their unit on poultry that they completed during Term 1. A number of 2

nd and 3

rd placings were also awarded to our

entries.

nd with an MSA score of 89.5/100. For this result

we were awarded $100 prize money and a silver medal – our first silver medal ever! Our other entry “Keith” did not gain any ribbons, unfortunately. Our three student paraders did very well, with Kirra Molony (Year 12) gaining a Highly Commended ribbon in the Schools class; Matt Kelly (Year 11) a 5

th ribbon in

the ASC Paraders; whilst Ashley McGuiggan (Year 12) achieved a personal best 3

rd place, also in the ASC

Paraders. Overall, this was our best result at the Royal for many years and the team of students who attended for the whole week - Ashley McGuiggan, Kirra Molony, Matt and Sarah Kelly, Chloe Bailey and Lachlan Ambridge - were a pleasure to accompany and represented the school proudly.

Thank you to our Sponsors, Ray White, Umina; the Kelly family, Bensville, GHS P & C and Jim Voyel, Bensville. Your support is greatly appreciated! Grant Jackson Agriculture

Music On Friday, 6

th May, Year 11 & 12 Music students

attended the HSC workshop at Newcastle Conservatorium. This provided the students with excellent insight into the components of the course with sessions on composition, viva voce, aural skills and a performance masterclass. Brodie Fairall was selected to perform one of his HSC pieces and received feedback from HSC markers. This was a valuable experience for all of the students as the session reinforced what the markers are looking for in performances. Well done Brodie. Year 12 Music students should be actively engaged in preparation of their HSC major works whether

performance, composition or viva voce. The HSC music exams are in weeks 8 & 9 of Term 3. Congratulations to Tiana Young of Year 12 who was successful in round 1 of the auditions for the Talent & Development Program which is run by the Arts Unit. The program develops the talents and careers of young Australian performers and song writers, through working with the entertainment community and providing unique industry experience. Tiana will present for the second round of auditions in July. Congratulations to Brad Tham & Noah Peres on their selection for YIPA 2016. LANGUAGES

HSC students now have the dates for their Speaking examinations. These will begin on Saturday 6

th August

and continue into September. Exam dates for our students are:

German Continuers Saturday 6th August

German Beginners Saturday 27th

August

French Continuers Saturday 20th

August

French Beginners Saturday 27th

August

Japanese Beginners Saturday 3rd

September

Russian Continuers Saturday 20th August.

In early June candidates will be officially informed of their examination centres and their times will be scheduled. We encourage all students to practise as much as possible to prepare for these exams. One way is to establish a ‘study buddy’ – a fellow student with whom they practise questions and responses. It is also very helpful for students to experience communicating with someone with whom they are not familiar, to accustom them to the exam situation.

Host Families Needed Four host families are needed for 5 weeks from 18

th

June -23rd

July for French students from Notre-Dame de Sainte-Croix, a high school in Paris. They are 15-16 years old but all students studying French in Years 8 -11 are encouraged to host a student. It is a wonderful opportunity to improve your French speaking skills. Please contact Mr Anthony if you are able to help.

‘Rugs for the Refuges’ 2016 This project will begin in Week 3. Donations of 8ply yarn and 4mm needles are always welcome as are offers of help to sew up the rugs. We still have enough squares to make up at least

three rugs, so if anyone is willing and able to give up a couple of hours every few weeks it would be great. Free tea, coffee and snacks. Why not form a group and enjoy a chat while sewing? Please contact Judy Heinrich if you can help.

ORANGE VISIT Our interschool visit with Orange High School is rapidly approaching and we now begin the process of finding beds for approximately 212 students! This visit has continued for many years and we hope that this year will again be a great success. The visit relies, of course, on the families of the host school billeting a student for 2 nights. The students from Orange High arrive on Wednesday 1

st June and depart on Friday 3

rd June.

Gosford students involved in billeting are invited to a school function on the Thursday evening. More detailed information is provided on the information letters available from either the school or on the school website. Please encourage your child to be involved in this very special whole school activity.

TAS

Year 7: The TAS faculty has acquired a vertical garden and we would like to thank Year 7 students Lachlan Sheath, William Newton, Tom Rodham and Luke Corcoran for their commitment and enthusiasm towards this project. The vertical garden was donated by the Royal Easter Show and our students planted out the garden and grew produce to exhibit. Our school logo laser engraved box filled with tomatoes, chillies, eggplants and herbs nurtured by the boys was displayed at the RAS this year. Whilst we were not a prize winner our entry was recognised for its fullness of colour. The vertical garden will now supply herbs to complement our nutrition and food science units of work across stage 4 and 5. Thank you boys for a fabulous effort!

Digital Technologies Exam Monday 16th

May The UNSW digital technologies exam will be held on Monday 16

th May for all students who have paid to enter

this national event. Students should check their entry status via the name list found on the glass wall in the TAS block. Contact Mrs Johnson, Mr Singh or Mr McFarlane if there is a question. Examination time is 40 minutes for Years 7 and 8 and 45 mins for Years 9 and 10. The competition is held in the school hall from Period 2 and students should follow the morning news for the time scheduled for their year group. Requirements - lead pencil, an eraser and perhaps a reading book if you finish early. Laser Cutter and Engraver The TAS faculty is very excited to add a laser cutter and engraver to the list of 21

st century equipment we have in

our faculty. Students in year 7 studying the unit ‘Location Location’ are applying the skills of adobe illustrator to create an individual lantern design for an eco-resort and this will be laser cut from bamboo plywood. The students are creating excellent design solutions to their problem based scenario. Year 12 and Year 10 engineering students are about to start their next engineering challenge which will require the application of skills found in adobe illustrator and CREO parametric. Students will be engineering mechanical parts for their next design project involving the principles of aerodynamics in flight and vehicles.

The laser cutter can cut fabric, leather and wood and engrave most surfaces and we are very excited to integrate its potential into each year group studying a technology subject. We thank the school’s P&C and parent body for their forward thinking, generosity and supporting 21st century learning in the design and technology classroom.

Year 12 Food Technology visit to MasterFoods Touring a multinational food manufacturer plant and working in the companies food product development kitchen was the privileged experience of Year 12 Food Technology students during their recent excursion to MasterFoods. Small group tours of the manufacturing plant, observing state of the art food processing equipment, an informative presentation of the business focus of the company and the products they develop provided a wonderfully relevant field experience for the students. The day was completed with a hands on task in the product development kitchens requiring a group of students to competitively produce the best meal based on a selection of the core products produced by MasterFoods. Many thanks and appreciation to MasterFoods’ staff who were so generous with their time and expertise. Mrs Cartland class teacher

Engineered bridge challenge - Year 10 Engineering students have worked collaboratively applying science and maths principles to design, calculate and build a balsa wood bridge. Integrity calculations will be made after testing in the coming weeks.

The Robogals are coming! The Robogals Robotics workshop for girls is open to girls in Years 8, 9 and 10 studying a technology subject.

The Robogals will be visiting TAS soon. Robogals is a university student run organisation that aims to increase female participation in engineering, science and technology. During the two hour workshop girls from technology subjects in Years 8, 9 and 10 will learn the basics of engineering and programming by building a robot in teams to perform tasks. There will be three workshops and numbers are limited. The workshop will be held in the faculty’s new design studio in C block. Girls should express their interest to their Technology teacher or see Mrs Johnson in the TAS block.

Our annual TAS excursion to TASmania was tremendous! 72 Year 10 Technology and

Applied Studies students travelled in two buses and filled half a plane to visit 26 food, timber, engineering and textile sites across six days. Students were able to – walk and compare bridge structures – Australia’s first bridge ‘The Richmond’, Launceston’s cataract gorge

suspension bridge and the Tahune air walk cantilever situated on the edge of the wilderness in the Huon Valley. We tasted boutique chocolate at Anvers, gourmet cheese at the Ashgrove dairy and smoked baby salmon at the unique 41 Degrees South Salmon and Ginseng Farm. The Georgian 1837 Callington stone grinding flour windmill was as fascinating as the Viking boat building techniques at the wooden boat building company. The world famous Salamanca markets displayed the many design talents of artisans across Tasmania and we’ll always remember ‘Chicken’, Country Cradle Truffles’ best farm dog in the world. We learnt about the microns of the wool fibre at the Yarns Artwork exhibition and the role of wool in early colonial Australia as well as the contribution of convict labour at Woolmer’s Estate.
